FREE Gear VR with Note 7 replacement?? - Note 7 Questions & Answers

Towards end of article Phandroid says that a FREE GEAR VR will be sent to users ....anyone else seen or heard this anywhere else ?

Not sure where they got that info... I don't see it any where
Sent from my SM-N930T using Tapatalk

The package will include a brand-new Note 7, the new version of the Samsung Gear VR, and a prepaid package to send the defective device back so you won’t have to pay for shipping costs.
It's there...

I already bought a new gear VR for my N7 (have one for my N4 also). I guess I could always try to sell it on ebay or something if this is true. I am more concerned about actually getting Verizon and Samsung to get me a replacement Note 7 instead of forcing me to go with the S7 edge, which is already 6 months old. If I had wanted an S7 or something else I would have gotten one 6 months ago. So far they Samsung and Verizon are not handling this crap even remotely properly. There should be some class actions lawsuit(s) here, this is a real cluster.

Notice his source is Reddit, in which the forum title is "How the Samsung Note7 recall is handled in France." Haven't seen or heard anything about Gear VR in the States...

Damn. I hope it would have been.

I got a replacement Note 7 due to the recall and ended up getting a Gear VR as one of the promotional gifts. The original offer was a watch or the sd card. When I called they said the new offer was the sd card or a gear VR. I picked the gear VR. I just received the gear VR yesterday. I'm in the US

Talk to? Just go to Samsungpromotions.com and fill out the form, it says for the S7, but when you come to choose your phone, just choose other. I have my VR Gear sitting on the table, and the 256GB card I got from the first N7 is currently in my N7....

Yes, surprisingly enough, this works. I saw it discussed online a few days ago, so I tried it and Samsung approved my submission later the same day. They've now shipped my Gear VR and the FedEx tracker says it's due for delivery tomorrow.

Mine got approved too

I got mine yesterday. I submitted mine under the s7 promotion and select other for my phone.

Just submitted today. Hopefully, it goes through for my replacement Note 7. We get to keep all these extras even if there is a 2nd recall, right?

unfortunately, oculus is no longer supporting the note 7 through a forced update on their app. I got my promotion gift today and connecting your note 7 pretty much disables the gear VR. pretty damn worthless right now if you have a note 7

I think today, although I've read on reddit and stuff that it might still work if you put your phone on airplane mode

Did you get the new gear vr or the old with this promotion?

Makes sense that Oculus wouldn't want to be responsible for holding a combustible phone two inches in front of your eyes.

Dammit I knew i should have gotten the sd card instead

So far so good. Great improvement over my iPhone 6 Plus. Iris scanner works flawlessly for me and I have glasses. Overall I'm in love. Just sensuous using it as my case and screen protector won't be here until tomorrow. I'm on AT&T btw.

I'm on sprint so hopefully tomorrow.
Who did you order from, I ordered from Samsung, and it seems I won't be receiving mines anytime soon.
The phone is absolutely gorgeous! I came from the iphone 6s+, the fit and finish is phenomenal. My case and screen protectors will be here tonight from Amazon Prime (same day delivery totally worth it), the only thing I dislike now about the samsung phones would be the "ok google" is not longer available for always on, and yes I know how to set it up I wish Samsung would have kept that feature like "Hey Siri" on the iphone 6s+.
It is going to take some getting used to as I have been away from Android for about 8 months rocking my iphone, but I have always tried out the new Samsung phones S6 edge plus S7 edge plus but I have always returned them and went back to the iphone so we will see with this phone if I keep it past the 14 days , but so far so good!!!

This exactly. Had the 6S and then went to an SE haha. When the Note arrives, it'll be twice the size. I've promised myself to at least keep the Note until the release of the iPhone 8, as it's supposed to be edge to edge display and ultra HD.. We'll see

Haha I'm actually using it without a case but i left the stock "protector" on it. I am still waiting for the otterbox defender to be released so i don't have any plans on buying a case soon, i am temporarily using my mumu PS Vita pouch as a "case" to keep it in when I'm not using it as it has a very food material inside the prevents the device from getting scratched

That's awesome, i will go to the mall tomorrow to get a screen protector. Hopefully there will be some available locally (Philippines). At first i wss fixed on getting a TGSP for my note7 but after reading a lot of things about TGSP on "edge phones" i think I'll stick with the "plastic" ones for now.
Hopefully the defender will be released soon, i am honestly not that comfrotable using the phone without any protection as from the videos on YouTube, it can get scratched easily.
Actually pretty jealous of you all. I had mine preordered but accidentally hit the cancel button instead of save one day and had to start over. I was 55th yesterday, and 54th today/tonight, guessing I won't be getting it anytime soon haha.

Don't feel too bad for yourself lol. You could be in my position:
I ordered the Black Onyx 2 minutes after midnight with a Sprint invite code that was given to me by Sprint. Was supposed to get the phone over a week ago. But they screwed up my order. Instead of Black Onyx they are sending me the Titanium... Which I dont want. They refused to cancel my order or to even change the order to the proper one. Stating that they were 'still trying to find my device in the warehouse'... I'm sitting here like "well good, then you can tell them to STOP trying to find it" but they wouldn't. Then when I was told it would ship by a specific day, it didn't. I paid an extra 50 dollars for next day shipping as well, but guess what? It JUST shipped yesterday at 8pm! And wont be here until tomorrow while I'm at work. So I basically paid 50 bucks to have my phone shipped the same day as what it would have been with free shipping... Ontop of that, Sprint put a restriction on my package! So I can't have UPS hold the package at their sorting facility for me to just come pick up like I always have to do. My 'UPS Driver' is cruel and won't take the time to go down my drive way to deliver packages. Sure the drive way is around a quarter mile long, but his excuse every time is "I can't find the house"... When the house is two stores, the ONLY two story house in the area, and can be seen over the tops of the trees from the road... But nope, he just won't come down the drive way to deliver. So since I have that restriction, I can't pick up my package like I normally have to do. So, I now have to call off from work so I can sit at the end of the drive way to wait for the UPS guy to show up... Then I have to take the phone into a Sprint Store to have them exchange it for the Black Onyx one... IF they even have it in stock... Because apparently the stores haven't even gotten their devices in yet. I talked to them yesterday when I tried to see if they could just hand over the proper phone and then I'd drop off my current phone and the incorrect Note 7 back to them. They said they would, but they don't have any devices in the store. So I really need to hope and pray they have a Black Onyx version that hasn't been purchased yet...
Getting this phone has been the worst experience of my life in regards to trying to buy a smartphone... My Note 5 was a breeze, and my S4 was as well. I just walked into the store 4 days before launch and was like "hey, I wanna buy the S4" and the sales guy walked outa the stock room with an S4 and sold it to me. I pre-ordered the Note 5 within minutes of them opening up pre-orders, and got the phone 3 days later, weeks before you could even buy them in a store. And now, they ask me if I want this phone weeks early, and I take them up on the offer, and presto... worst experience ever.

Hoping as well haha. I wasn't even planning on getting the phone until they said they'd give it early and at a discount. But guess that was just too good to be true D=

Anyone having second thoughts about their pre-order?

Especially if you could only get the 32gb version. I have the onpelus 3. Good device. How do you think the Pixel XL will be better? I think the camera is a big plus for it. Maybe faster software updates, although not sure how fast the updates were on the latest nexus devices.
Here I've been using an OP2 and I can't wait to change of device...
My OPO was great, my OP2 suck since I got it with all the cheap hardware problem.
I'm going with a 32gb Pixel Xl, I won't miss that 32gb less than my OP2. I can't wait to be on our Android, using PA ATM but it's not perfect.

Lucky for me i get to go to a CPW on release day so if my unit has not shipped by then ill go in store and pick one up and if not i might just not bother all together, my 6P is still fine
Cancelled my 32 Silver for a 128 black. I heard that the white front might not be best for VR and I got worried about space having a 64 6P currently.
Second thoughts.... sure it is going to cost me $1300 with the taxes.
I think twice about spending that much cash.
I pre ordered. But now I see the v20 on B&H with a tablet (as a gift) for 870. No taxes.
We are talking about $100 difference and you get a tablet that you can sell for another 100$.
The v20 has great sound, camera, screen and Nuget.
So at this point I don't know.
No HD Voice for the Pixel on AT&T is a big drawback for me. Just found out that AT&T won't activate that feature for off-carrier phones.
Dropped off my Note7 on Friday at the AT&T store, using an S7 Edge for now (so similar to the Note7 but not at the same time). Ordered the Pixel XL that same evening (Black/128) without a second thought. The only thing I will regret, aside from thinking the Note7 was the best looking phone but that ship has sailed, is Samsung Pay. I have been using it since getting the Note in August and I love it! I wish Google had purchased that company that patented MST technology....it's the shizzle!!

This is pretty big as I'm on AT&T as well. Did you cancel yours.
I just canceled my Pixel XL 128 GB. T-mobile has an offer for the LG V20 for $550 after trade -in of my old phone. I get B&O headphones for free and even could get a tablet for free. For the pixel I would have paid almost 1,000 bucks and nothing on the Pixel would rectify that price difference. For 550 I can sacrifice some "features" like Google assistant etc.

You just tapped the card swiper or something like that? I think I tried it a year ago with the s6 but wasnt accurate at all for me.
I ordered the 32GB XL and I am a little worried that I didn't get enough storage, but I had a 32GB Nexus 6 previously and it wasn't a huge deal. I just need to be careful about deleting old TWRP backups and photos that have been backed up to Google Photos. I will only regret my purchase if the storage speed sucks, even though it has UFS 2.0. Google has been so terrible about storage performance, but the switch to UFS 2.0 should hopefully address that problem. As long as that's good to go, I will feel as though it was money well spent.

Samsung Pay has worked flawlessly for me, I use it almost everyday and most days multiple times. Grocery stores, WaWa's, gas stations, only place it didn't work is in a small waffles and ice cream store called Nina's. Great waffles but they use one of those attachments to an iPad and it didn't recognize the card.
the only problem with Samsung pay is they were/are slow as hell at expanding it, they have been talking about it since the S6 for the UK and it still isn't out here, so coming from my Note 7 I won't miss it because Samsung never got round to actually bringing it to Europe unlike Android Pay, so really MST or not I would probably not even look at Samsung Pay now, for me atleast that shipped sailed a long time ago.
as for having second thoughts, since I had to return my Note 7 this is the only phone I can see as a replacement and I need something to get off the S3 that was the only phone I could scrounge to use while I waited for the network to actually sort out what it is doing (it still hasn't about 4 or 5 days after taking my phone off me, no surprise I am changing network)
No none at all.

Yeah works great at the small number of merchants that accept NFC payment. I've been using Google's version for years, I still have a $20 Google gift card for using Google Wallet back in like 2011 or so. My point is Samsung Pay is far superior because of MST technology. I can use it everywhere a credit card is swiped regardless of whether there is an NFC pad or not.
I tried Samsung Pay 3 or 4 times on my S7E I had. It worked exactly 0 times for me, so I stopped trying.
I think I must go to places with very finicky readers or something.

Occasionally I get a "card could not be read" message but then I reswipe and it goes through. I have had great success with using it, you should try it again. Also I found watching the Samsung Pay tutorial helpful as I wasn't "swiping" my phone which helps the reader pick up the information.

Samsung is leaving us behind

I just got this when trying to update Samsung Pay
They're not going to pay staff to further develop applications for a platform that's going to have virtually no users.
Just return it and get an S7 Edge until the Note 8 arrives. You'll probably get a discount on it anyway.
What will suck is if Google Play Store and Galaxy Apps block Note7's from accessing the stores :crying:
Yeah but if they decide not to let me upgrade to an 8 I'm stuck with an old phone for two years

If you don't have access to your old phone (I kept my S4) to tie you over, I would just suffer a few months and buy like Samsung J3 for $160. You will still get the $100 loyalty credit and then just get the S8 in march or wait it out for the Note 8. Keep the J3 as a MP3 player or something, or happily trade it in if they offer the great 1/2 off deal for staying with Samsung. I didn't see that the deal was for those who go to the S7...
That's a bummer, I just checked the new Samsung Pay update and it features coupons which would've come in handy but still not enough to make me give up my Note 7. No reason, to hold out on rooting now I guess. I don't really use the secure folder and never use the iris scanner. ?

VR Gear should be arriving today

I'm amazed. I got an email that the VR gear already had a fedex number. Checking the number this morning (which weirdly enough is when I got the email) it was apparently sent on the 21st (the day I submitted my receipt and the offer), and says should be arriving today.
Pretty cool how quickly this came out.
Did you just get the VR or did you get the full immersive package? I am fully expecting it will take weeks.

Whatever the free deal was. I never understood all the hype of VR gear especially since it's so nascent and there's not a lot of content out there that's even worth using, I just got the thing they were giving away for getting the device.

The fedex "label" said the label was sent to Fedex on the 21st of April, yet, it says it will be delivered today but it hasn't even been released from their sendoff point. This is like TMobile saying the device had shipped since the 13th but didn't actually ship until the 19th. Such bad communication.
The instructions that came with the notifications are just badly written, they "assume" a lot and explain NOTHING:
Yeah, although the instructions I got for the fedex number are odd. It says to:
1. Create or sign in to your Oculus account from your new Samsung Galaxy device.
Did this, but um, then?
2. From the Oculus app, tap the More icon on the bottom right > tap Redeem Code > enter your code** > tap Submit.**You can omit the dash when entering your code, it will automatically populate.
Where do I get said Oculus app? WHICH Oculus app?
What code? I received no code so far. Is it in the package with the hardware?
3. Download your content bonus. (After downloading the content, your titles will appear in your library.)
Um, which "content bonus"?
4. Please make sure to access your Oculus account and download content by 11:59:59 PM Pacific Time on July 31, 2017 when the download expires.
Such poorly documented instructions. The website is even worse. The link to register goes to an "oops" page that says I'm at the wrong place.
They really didn't do this well. Is Samsung ALWAYS this bad?
I just got my email also. I was expecting 4-6 weeks for delivery . But 6 days is fantastic!
I got the email yesterday as well, label created on the 21st with an expected delivery of today, but FedEx hasn't received the box yet so I'm assuming that's not going to happen.
You will get a card with the VR for the bonus content.
I wonder why some of these are taking longer than others. I registered for mine on the 19th, got an email saying it was approved on the 20th, but beyond that Samsung's site still just says mine is processing.

same here, haven't gotten an email. I also order just the gear VR. I already have a 256 card from the note 7 deal and I have bose headphones so wasn't worth the $100.
Same here. VR is on the way.
How much will I be able to sell this nonsense for on eBay?
Got my tracking as well. Stoked to mess with it!
I tried my S8+ in my gear vr from my S7 edge and OMG. Almost no screen door effect. Compared to the S7 edge the S8+ is MUCH better! VR PRON looks hyper real!

If it's like the s7 edge, when u plug in the gear VR, it will automatically take u to download the Oculus app.
I finally got movement on my free vr today. Left Indiana this morning, delivery date was updated to Thursday

What I don't understand is why scam their own users with false ship dates when in reality they haven't even shipped. The ship date STILL shows as of 4/21 and yet they haven't even shipped the damn thing yet.
It's the same scam T-Mobile pulled with fake ship date of 4/13 and in actuality shipped 4/19.
It's just stupid that they show false dates.
After complaining in the thread earlier today, I got my tracking number tonight!
feel like I keep seeing people who registered after me getting shipping info. Little bit frustrating lol.
my $99 + tax payment completely cleared too and nada.

i got my VR on the 21st with my phone, pretty underwhelming but mosty due to a lack of content. the Oculus Video app isnt bad. i wish they were releasing Rick & Morty VR game to the Gear and not just the Rift & PSVR

Is there anything different about it? the last one just made me feel dizzy lol

Linux on DeX abandoned. I'm out.

Just got an email saying it's being terminated and once you update to android 10, it will cease to work.
Along with this and the abandonment of the gearvr (yes, I used it regularly, no, not for porn), and the complete lack of any kind of warning that it was going to happen, I'm done with Samsung.
I was about to purchase a TV this coming black friday and Samsung were in the running. Not any more. By the new year, I'll be a Samsung free household.
Assholes!
gear vr is a big waste. paid some apps and only to lose support on note 10. but it wont drive me to buy their dedicated vr gear though

It's a phone. You want a desktop or vr, buy a computer and real vr system.
It's not like you can pick up a cheap galaxy alternative.... Wait..

Thanks for letting me know I should go out and purchase two additional devices to replace the one device that was doing everything I needed it to just fine.

Nope, it is not a phone. It is a full arm computer on phone form. Very powerful too. Buy the 12GB version and you are faster than most laptops out there.
Discontinuing LoD means Samsung is non serious for anything really...
Yes it's a phone... that they want it to do more than what it honestly needs to do. That's why it's called a "smart"PHONE.
LoD maybe like 50K people use it at most 2 of the main sources total downloads on the play store barely broke 5K, and APK mirror had roughly 36K downloads. Hardly game breaking and honestly isn't worth the effort to keep working on it. That's barely even 5% of sale of devices that supported it. Probably cost more to maintain that the profit it produces. IF you want to keep using it well don't upgrade your device. No other OEM offered it so you are stuck up a creek without a paddle so to speak. Maybe it 20-30% of sales they may have kept it. Maybe you can get a petition going like some people are doing and see if Samsung change their mind.
Most 1200 laptops are faster than the Note 10+ my 2013 laptop costs me 1200 brand new and I know for a fact it still would walk circles around the Note 10+. The Note 10+ probably has the same power as a $500 laptop currently at best imho.

We are talking not even 1% in 2 years. Essential sold more phones than that in 6 months. Makes sense why Samsung would drop it especially when people scream about how slow Samsung is with updating.
Yes I am one of those downloads, but I don't use it as much as I thought I would. I ended up not installing on my Note 10+ , and uninstalled it on my S10+.

As I said APK mirror shows 36K downloads and all one needs to do it look at the cached website(which a few publications did) and saw 5K"ish" downloads. You don't have to believe it if you don't want to, but I have nothing to gain or lose by telling you what I read and saw. If since 2 years ago Samsung sold millions of S9, Note8, Note9, and S10 devices and only 40K worth of downloads what would you do from a business unbiased standpoint? You would drop it right? I know I would because it's hardly a blip of sales being affected. It's pocket change compared to what they would pay for a development team to maintain it.

it's not even published officially, just basing on the download counts on apkmirror doesn't mean anything. it's like saying the number of downloads for the phone apk at apkmirror tells us it is unpopular so we should ditch it.

Do you think Samsung would drop it if it was not widely adopted? I see in this thread alone 2 people trying get Samsung to keep it. We See Pixel owners petitioning Google to bring back a feature they took out the pixel 4 and countless threads all over the place. It was a niche and barely anyone used. Be real with yourself.
To be buying a $1000+ phone and not have a desktop, and complain about a niche VR setup..
Priorities are way off here.
I get the anger over Samsung dropping a "feature",
So don't update if it's worth it to you.

niche or not is not an adjective where you describe it it becomes a part of reality. there is a difference between being realistic and practical. the stats on the number of people using dex and linux on dex should be similar. the only reason for this would be the people who would use dex are people who would be savvy and would know about linux on dex.
before you go on expecting me to provide some background on the stats, perhaps we should be doing the same before jumping to conclusion what is niche, what is realistic and what is practical. personal viewpoint do not make the cut here. removal of a feature is a fact.

vr is niche probably because it isn't as widely accepted as a necessity.

It was never a feature to begin with... Show me where Samsung said the Note 10 would have said feature? Never did and like you say it was never a public release so you are contradicting your previous comments. So what is it a feature removal or a product that was never officially released? There is a difference between the two.

When has Samsung said it would be available to the Note 10? It was in beta and had the disclaimer it may be dropped or may be rolled out as an official feature. You can't call it a feature if it was never an official product released.
There's other alternatives you can do and a lot of media outlets showcased them. Maybe you can try those?
gutted about this gonna check out the alts

Dude you were in the minority and that is why they killed it. It wasn't cost effective. The development of the product was greater than the sales. They all do it, it's business. Look at Google and how many apps they've killed or Microsoft or Apple. If that is the thing that will be a dealbreaker for you, I might suggest you avoid tech all together because eventually, all tech dies.

Sure it was beta and all. **** move not to roll out one app release with 2 strings so that the LoD app can run on the Note 10/10+ (which have higher RAM configs available that the S10 line - good luck finding a 12GB version of the S10+). There's no alternatives to LoD. UserLAnd comes close, but it's nowhere as stable or fast because of the way it runs. No way to get a proper desktop browser - sans remoting to a VM somewhere. And all the other implications. Sure the userbase for this is (was) niche, but still.
