Samsung is leaving us behind - Note 7 Questions & Answers

I just got this when trying to update Samsung Pay

They're not going to pay staff to further develop applications for a platform that's going to have virtually no users.
Just return it and get an S7 Edge until the Note 8 arrives. You'll probably get a discount on it anyway.

What will suck is if Google Play Store and Galaxy Apps block Note7's from accessing the stores :crying:

Yeah but if they decide not to let me upgrade to an 8 I'm stuck with an old phone for two years

You'll always be able to get apps. Even if every app store in the world blocks you you'll always have apkmirror.

I wish they would confirm this for the USA. I read Korean customers will get the S8 or Note 8 1/2 off.

If you don't have access to your old phone (I kept my S4) to tie you over, I would just suffer a few months and buy like Samsung J3 for $160. You will still get the $100 loyalty credit and then just get the S8 in march or wait it out for the Note 8. Keep the J3 as a MP3 player or something, or happily trade it in if they offer the great 1/2 off deal for staying with Samsung. I didn't see that the deal was for those who go to the S7...

That's a bummer, I just checked the new Samsung Pay update and it features coupons which would've come in handy but still not enough to make me give up my Note 7. No reason, to hold out on rooting now I guess. I don't really use the secure folder and never use the iris scanner. ?

JUMP! To Galaxy S5?

I'm jumping to the S5 or HTC One 2, considering Samsung and T-Mobile phones are always running a deal, If I were to jump on release day, I'd pay a down payment. Anyone who has previously jumped to a high end phone can tell me what they paid for the down payment? Or what kind of price to expect on the S5 with jump? Or, is it best to wait till they have a special price on the S5? Like, the note 3 was offered at no DP around December and November.

So all you two had to do was pay taxes, and that's it? Was there a reason you two had no down, or is no down standard for a jump user?

I believe that is based on credit worthiness, unless you have not been with T-Mobile for a certain amount of time. I got my S4 in August and they told me it would be $150 down, unless I have held an account with T-Mobile for some amount of time (A year? I forget), in which case it would be $0 down.
I just Jumped to my N3 a few weeks ago and it was $0 down...which makes little sense, but, whatever.
I have great (not perfect, but up there) credit...and I've got the feeling that their bar isn't terribly high.
Then again, depending on the associate you deal with you never know how things will go down. My sister just told me how her last bill was for over $1000 because after Jumping the associate didn't credit back the original EIP balance on top of charging the entirety of her new phone balance directly to her account. I suggested going to the police as that seems like some intentionally shady business.
On the other hand my last 2 bills have not included an EIP payment at all and my device is showing $0 balance and I'm wondering if the associate perhaps screwed up completely and did the opposite of what happened to my sister. (The transaction took almost 3 hours somehow...I'm not sure he was entirely literate, even though he was a really nice guy).
I'm sure people with so-so credit walk in with no previous T-Mobile account and walk out with a $0 down N3 all the time...give it a shot. Hell, try different stores and see what you come up with.
It is 100% based on your credit. They take your Social and run it and depending on how good your credit is means if you have to put anything down or not.
Yeah it depends on your credit. I have **** credit. There was a 0 down for good credit, 200 down for ok credit, and then there was me.... 360 down. You would think they would give me a break since I've been with them for 3 years and have paid off 3 phones early.

They will only run it when you open your account unless you request it to be run again.
For JUMP to be efficient you need to upgrade on the 0 down deals if your credit allows. I think 0 down is a staple now so when the GS5 comes I'd expect it to be 0 down as well

Yeah I hear ya for sure..... I rooted my stepsons S4 today and I was like "so this is a nifty little toy" lol! For me it's just the screen and S-pen..... I never put it away and don't want to live without it. The Note series has me really spoiled. The 5 has some cool stuff going on but the note 4 is gonna be rediculous I'm sure and have the same + features. If you do jump to the S5 please let us know your impressions and likes/dislikes.
Yea, I already know what to expect. A mediocre phone with nifty features that mainly serve as bragging tools lol. But agreed, the Note 4 is mind boggling. I'm sure we're all expecting huge things. Since the note series is the only series that actually had huge changes every year, unlike galaxy and iPhones

Ugh I hate jump, it's a gimmick really. You have to give tmobile your damn near paid off phone for a new phone just to do the same thing over and over again. I understand this sounds good to some people but if you ask me it's never really your phone even though your making all these steep payments monthly. I don't think I'll be able to sell my note 3 for a long time, it's the best phone I've ever used since 2009 and I gave the g1 a try (never cared for cell phones til than). But even if I did sell it.. I know I could get back more cash from a 3rd party than I could from t mobile.

For those of us grandfathered into the old JUMP it's an awesome deal. Here's how:
My wife has an HTC One. 0 down. $25 per month. After the 6 months she had paid $150 on it. The EIP when we traded it in was 430 IIRC. She jumped to a Note for $50 (tax). T-MOBILE paid off the rest of the old phone. The HTC One in perfect condition isn't going for anywhere near the 430 she owed on it.
The key is that if you pay 0 down AND don't paid a dime more then your payments you will make out in the end. ONLY if your on the old JUMP plan, the new one is a little rougher.

Not quite, every phone is bound to have a root eventually. We have an unlocked bootloader, so it would be much easier. T-Mobile doesn't care about Knox, that's a Samsung thing. And If Knox 1 hasn't been able to be reset yet, i doubt version 2 will be exploited.

I have the new jump plan, I just switched to tmobile around December. I had at&t before, so regardless, i'm use to paying $200 for a new phone. And considering how many people have got their note 3 with 0 down, I might have a chance at getting the S5 0 down. If not, paying around $150 for a new phone isn't at all bad when it retails for $700

what to do if your note 7 catches fire?

I'm going to keep mine until I see what happens. No other phones interest me right now. Since I'm keeping it for a while I figured I should ask what exactly do you do if it "explodes"? Who do you call? I don't have another phone so I don't think I'd be able to take pictures of it unless I went and borrowed a buddies phone. I want to make sure I document it if it were to happen.
+1. I'm keeping mine too, I want another replacement Note 7.

Nothing else compares man... This v20 isn't even waterproof and pixel looks lame and no expandable storage.. Note 7 has it all.
I'm keeping mine too. The only way the Note 7 could be made better is a removable battery and remove the Knox tripping thing (Make it so it can be restored to 0x0 or get rid of it completely).
Hopefully they fix the issue once and for all and ship out units to those who want them like us...
I don't think a note ever exploded yet. They tend to get very hot instead, can deform and burn.
If you decide to keep it after the recall know that there is no number to call and especially not Samsung's. In case something goes wrong you are indeed solo, don't count on your insurance to pitch in unless you have some special clauses in your contract that accept risks from recalled phones.

No one is deciding to keep it. The note is now really done. Don't be foolish, you'll get no liability, no updates, no security fixes, no access to some cell networks. Its just ridiculous to make any stand now and keep the phone. We will see what next August brings.

So I basically got a free note 7... Verizon said I don't have to return it and they will still refund me the $180 I spent to upgrade to it. I'm also now eligible for another upgrade.
I know personally I'm not returning it. My battery is yet to get hot. I have the update bs blocked, so they aren't sending any stupid crippling garbage to my phone.

Well the customer rep I spent 2 hours with told me the total opposite. He said they will absolutely not charge me for the phone if I don't send it back. They are already refunding me the $180 I spent to get it. He said the word around corporate is to not send the phones back... Verizon doesn't want them. I think they just have to put that on their site to cover their asses.

Who's getting rid of the note 7?

Just wondering who here is keeping the note 7 and taking the risk of it exploding? I'm happy to keep mine though little annoyed that they've stopped gear VR support and I'm 80% certain Samsung will eventually force us all to return the note 7 by maybe a software update that renders the phone useless.
I honestly have no idea what phone I'd get, I had the S7 edge as a temporary replacement phone while the recall was going on and it didn't feel as good as the note 7, the software wasn't as good and I missed the little features like the swipe gesture in the camera app for example. I still have my note 4 but it uses a different sim card so will have to get an adaptor but even then the note 4 seems really out dated in comparison but I get to keep the S-pen which is the biggest reason I got a note device in the first place. I also have a gear s2 smart watch and while it should work with other android phones it's just works better with a Samsung phone. I hope Samsung do something quick maybe release a note 8 and replace the note 7s with it lol there's just no alternatives.
What are you doing with your note 7?
Heading to VZW over lunch. No clue what I'm replacing with, or if they will even allow me yet (VZW 3rd Party).

Hanging on to it for as long as I possibly can. If the deadline for a replacement or refund is midnight on 31st December, I'll hand it in on 31st December.
Is a p**s take though like what about people who've brought cases for the note 7 and other accessories? I purchased my gear vr from ebay for £80 as the seller had it with the note 7 but didn't want it and I couldn't seem to find it anywhere online or in shops probably due to the recall. I had the S7 edge at the time so could still use it but now they've cut off note 7 support so I no longer can use my gear VR so I'd at least like to know exactly what's going on so I can possibly see about selling it. Add on top the money I've spent on apps which I can no long use on the gear VR it's just ridiculous. I personally wouldn't mind waiting through another recall as long as I get to keep and use the note 7 I have then just swap it for a new and hopefully completely safe note 7 but looks like the note 7 is done for.
I'm keeping mine. I will treasure it even more now knowing once it's gone, it's gone forever. Now I need to figure out a way getting rid of the 60% charging cap. I love this phone so much!

VZW was no help here. They said deal w Samsung. BS.
If I change the build.prop file, do you reckon I can trick the oculus app into thinking it's an S7 edge not a note 7?? I used it on the gear vr before the update and it seemed to work okay without getting stupidly hot even had it on charge lol.

If not today, give it some time. This is still breaking news and info. hasn't flown down yet.
I did notice in my VZW account that my Note 7 now says "Upgrade Eligible". This wasn't there yesterday. Something on the back end happened.
At minimum, I'm going to deactivate this device and put an old phone on the account for now.
TMO has offered to exchange me out of this POS. But as others have said, there is nothing out there right now to really hold it down. So my question is this, Nougat won't be released for the N7 I suppose, what is the true lifespan of the phone with updates not being released for it? And of course, there is the explosion possibility?

Personally - and you have to make up your own mind on this - I am not even 0.000000000001 % bothered about the "explosion risk". You have about as much chance of winning Euromillions tonight, and in my view, that is no basis to reject a piece of equipment.
The lack of updates and also dismal resale value is much more concerning.
But worse than any of that, I think Samsung will send out an update that cripples the phone. They did it with Rev.1. so I have no reason to assume they won't do the same with Rev.2. Your choice to keep it may very well be taken out of your hands, which personally, I think is disgusting.

Yeah, I'm back on my OG HTC One, lol. So far 1 hour on the phone with Samsung and everyone is clueless. About to hang up and just hit VZW again in a day or two. I have to say, though, it's irritating to be paying on a device that is powered down and not activated on my line (Edge financing).
Time to cut loses. Thats what samsung did. The phone hase become a liability. Get your money back if you can.

Why don't you just use it? Seriously there's been like 8 with problems out of what, 2 million, 3 million? Seriously you have more chance of being run over than having a problem with the device.
The thing with statistics is they can be unintuitive and lead to strange conclusions. Let's say one phone in every 500,000 is going to develop a fault and catch fire. From Samsung's perspective, that means they can be certain they will have lots of unhappy customers, potential lawsuits and bad publicity and therefore it's a bit of a no-brainer to stop selling it.
But from your perspective, you have a 500,000:1 on chance that your phone will have no problems. And in the remotely unlikely event that it does, how likely is it to kill you, burn your house down or anything like that. Even less likely. There are ZERO such reports.
So it's up to you, but for me, it's a no brainer to keep using it, and I hope Samsung will respect that point of view and not cripple our phones with some unnecessary and unwanted forced update.

Yeah I agree I'm not so much concerned about the explosion risk but just the lack of support and updates in the future. Wish they'd just let us take the risk I for one wouldn't sue Samsung if my note 7 does explode there's little chance that you haven't heard about the issues from somewhere therefore it's not Samsung's fault that I took the risk.
What did samsung do with the phone after they recalled it, if they didn't fix the issue?
Samsung UK web site has no mention of recall for v2.
Doing nothing until Samsung (who I bought it from) contact me. Even then it won't be going back until it's knocked out by Samsung.

Indeed. Just looking it up now, you are 500 times more likely to die from riding a motorbike than you are to have a fire with your Note 7. (Assuming 1 phone per 500,000 has a problem.)
best buy exchanged mine out with no questions asked. I was told to even keep the 256GB SD card. unfortunate I went to the dark side and got iphone7 plus. The LG was just cheap and I was unimpressed. Buying the Google Pixel XL outright to bring over to Sprint was not a option for me. I am done with Sammy with all the issues I have had with there products since the Note 4 and other house hold appliances. Iphone was my only option.

I tried to Pre order the new Galaxy Watch and found the $150 code I got for buying the Note 10 didnt work.
I chatted with Samsung and they said the code cannot be used on new products, only mobile accessories.
So they put a time limit of December on the code, then stop you from being able to use it on anything new.
What a scam.

The story my son got was that it couldn't be used on pre-order items. He was told he could use the credit on the new watch when released.

Wouldnt be the first time they gave out bad info. Just have to wait till it gets released to see what happens.

Well, the watch was released today.
The code still does not work.
Not defending Samsung , but it was stated in the details of the offer that the credit was on "selected" items. I used mine at checkout when I bought the phone and even then the list was VERY restricted. Fortunately I wanted the Galaxy watch 46mm so I used my 200 credit for that otherwise spending 200 on accessories was no deal

Try it on website not the app I had this issue
Total crap. Guess I didn't read closely enough. Won't buy Samsung again-this is just us clearing out their unwanted inventory
They still had best trade in deal on unlocked.

Seriously complaining about free/bonus credit.
My math assumed that I would get something I wanted or needed ... The pixel XL 3 that I had worked fine.
I have nothing to complain about. Samsung gave me $600 to trade in my used Note 9, which I paid $400 for. Then they gave me a $200 credit for reserving my Note 10+ and preordering it. And I used that $200 towards preordering my Tab S6. Doesn't seem like a scam to me.
So you didnt want a note 10, you liked your pixel, so you paid 1000 dollars for a phone you didnt want in order to get a 150 dollar credit on a watch that wasnt released yet ?

haha sorry but this really made me laugh!!
This sounds like a lesson in personal responsibility.
I love my Note 10 but I can definitely see that Samsung was a little shady here. That credit should be able to be used on anything.

I think that's more of a it would've been nice situation. The details stipulated "select items". It's kind of on the consumer to make sure they read all the conditions with their purchase.
Since you work for Samsung can you send me an active 2?
Would be much appreciated!

Being an adult and actually reading when you make a large purchase makes me a Samsung shill?
Damn do you have any idea how childish you sound?
I'll give you five hundred credits!
Lord forbid a consumer make an informed choice and not throw "free money" away..

Linux on DeX abandoned. I'm out.

Just got an email saying it's being terminated and once you update to android 10, it will cease to work.
Along with this and the abandonment of the gearvr (yes, I used it regularly, no, not for porn), and the complete lack of any kind of warning that it was going to happen, I'm done with Samsung.
I was about to purchase a TV this coming black friday and Samsung were in the running. Not any more. By the new year, I'll be a Samsung free household.
Assholes!
gear vr is a big waste. paid some apps and only to lose support on note 10. but it wont drive me to buy their dedicated vr gear though

It's a phone. You want a desktop or vr, buy a computer and real vr system.
It's not like you can pick up a cheap galaxy alternative.... Wait..

Thanks for letting me know I should go out and purchase two additional devices to replace the one device that was doing everything I needed it to just fine.

Nope, it is not a phone. It is a full arm computer on phone form. Very powerful too. Buy the 12GB version and you are faster than most laptops out there.
Discontinuing LoD means Samsung is non serious for anything really...
Yes it's a phone... that they want it to do more than what it honestly needs to do. That's why it's called a "smart"PHONE.
LoD maybe like 50K people use it at most 2 of the main sources total downloads on the play store barely broke 5K, and APK mirror had roughly 36K downloads. Hardly game breaking and honestly isn't worth the effort to keep working on it. That's barely even 5% of sale of devices that supported it. Probably cost more to maintain that the profit it produces. IF you want to keep using it well don't upgrade your device. No other OEM offered it so you are stuck up a creek without a paddle so to speak. Maybe it 20-30% of sales they may have kept it. Maybe you can get a petition going like some people are doing and see if Samsung change their mind.
Most 1200 laptops are faster than the Note 10+ my 2013 laptop costs me 1200 brand new and I know for a fact it still would walk circles around the Note 10+. The Note 10+ probably has the same power as a $500 laptop currently at best imho.

We are talking not even 1% in 2 years. Essential sold more phones than that in 6 months. Makes sense why Samsung would drop it especially when people scream about how slow Samsung is with updating.
Yes I am one of those downloads, but I don't use it as much as I thought I would. I ended up not installing on my Note 10+ , and uninstalled it on my S10+.

As I said APK mirror shows 36K downloads and all one needs to do it look at the cached website(which a few publications did) and saw 5K"ish" downloads. You don't have to believe it if you don't want to, but I have nothing to gain or lose by telling you what I read and saw. If since 2 years ago Samsung sold millions of S9, Note8, Note9, and S10 devices and only 40K worth of downloads what would you do from a business unbiased standpoint? You would drop it right? I know I would because it's hardly a blip of sales being affected. It's pocket change compared to what they would pay for a development team to maintain it.

it's not even published officially, just basing on the download counts on apkmirror doesn't mean anything. it's like saying the number of downloads for the phone apk at apkmirror tells us it is unpopular so we should ditch it.

Do you think Samsung would drop it if it was not widely adopted? I see in this thread alone 2 people trying get Samsung to keep it. We See Pixel owners petitioning Google to bring back a feature they took out the pixel 4 and countless threads all over the place. It was a niche and barely anyone used. Be real with yourself.
To be buying a $1000+ phone and not have a desktop, and complain about a niche VR setup..
Priorities are way off here.
I get the anger over Samsung dropping a "feature",
So don't update if it's worth it to you.

niche or not is not an adjective where you describe it it becomes a part of reality. there is a difference between being realistic and practical. the stats on the number of people using dex and linux on dex should be similar. the only reason for this would be the people who would use dex are people who would be savvy and would know about linux on dex.
before you go on expecting me to provide some background on the stats, perhaps we should be doing the same before jumping to conclusion what is niche, what is realistic and what is practical. personal viewpoint do not make the cut here. removal of a feature is a fact.

vr is niche probably because it isn't as widely accepted as a necessity.

It was never a feature to begin with... Show me where Samsung said the Note 10 would have said feature? Never did and like you say it was never a public release so you are contradicting your previous comments. So what is it a feature removal or a product that was never officially released? There is a difference between the two.

When has Samsung said it would be available to the Note 10? It was in beta and had the disclaimer it may be dropped or may be rolled out as an official feature. You can't call it a feature if it was never an official product released.
There's other alternatives you can do and a lot of media outlets showcased them. Maybe you can try those?
gutted about this gonna check out the alts

Dude you were in the minority and that is why they killed it. It wasn't cost effective. The development of the product was greater than the sales. They all do it, it's business. Look at Google and how many apps they've killed or Microsoft or Apple. If that is the thing that will be a dealbreaker for you, I might suggest you avoid tech all together because eventually, all tech dies.

Sure it was beta and all. **** move not to roll out one app release with 2 strings so that the LoD app can run on the Note 10/10+ (which have higher RAM configs available that the S10 line - good luck finding a 12GB version of the S10+). There's no alternatives to LoD. UserLAnd comes close, but it's nowhere as stable or fast because of the way it runs. No way to get a proper desktop browser - sans remoting to a VM somewhere. And all the other implications. Sure the userbase for this is (was) niche, but still.
