what to do if your note 7 catches fire? - Note 7 Questions & Answers

I'm going to keep mine until I see what happens. No other phones interest me right now. Since I'm keeping it for a while I figured I should ask what exactly do you do if it "explodes"? Who do you call? I don't have another phone so I don't think I'd be able to take pictures of it unless I went and borrowed a buddies phone. I want to make sure I document it if it were to happen.

Nothing else compares man... This v20 isn't even waterproof and pixel looks lame and no expandable storage.. Note 7 has it all.

I'm keeping mine too. The only way the Note 7 could be made better is a removable battery and remove the Knox tripping thing (Make it so it can be restored to 0x0 or get rid of it completely).
Hopefully they fix the issue once and for all and ship out units to those who want them like us...

I don't think a note ever exploded yet. They tend to get very hot instead, can deform and burn.
If you decide to keep it after the recall know that there is no number to call and especially not Samsung's. In case something goes wrong you are indeed solo, don't count on your insurance to pitch in unless you have some special clauses in your contract that accept risks from recalled phones.

No one is deciding to keep it. The note is now really done. Don't be foolish, you'll get no liability, no updates, no security fixes, no access to some cell networks. Its just ridiculous to make any stand now and keep the phone. We will see what next August brings.

Says who? There's plenty of people on these few threads alone who have said they will providing it doesn't get crippled with some Samsung vandalising update.

Maybe google should step in and prevent the Note 7 from accessing google play and services

So I basically got a free note 7... Verizon said I don't have to return it and they will still refund me the $180 I spent to upgrade to it. I'm also now eligible for another upgrade.

I know personally I'm not returning it. My battery is yet to get hot. I have the update bs blocked, so they aren't sending any stupid crippling garbage to my phone.

Hmm.. Do you have to be rooted to block updates? I don't want then to cripple mine either but I'm stock not rooted.

Im keeping my note 7. Used all the previous notes and iphones and i can assure you guys that note 7 is the best smart phone out there so far.

Well the customer rep I spent 2 hours with told me the total opposite. He said they will absolutely not charge me for the phone if I don't send it back. They are already refunding me the $180 I spent to get it. He said the word around corporate is to not send the phones back... Verizon doesn't want them. I think they just have to put that on their site to cover their asses.

You know what. They had a chance to fix this. Now they screwed over their most faithful customers the SECOND time. Causing most of us expences for accessories etc we are likely never to get back. Causing us anxiety keeping us in the dark. As far as I am concerned, the company can die. It is one thing to mess up once. No, they did it TWICE. I am so mad right now.
Or make that ~6" Note that was looming and tested. Perhaps the battery was designed for the flat version and got too crammed in the edged version.

We all are... And the frustrating part is that there is no other phone that would even compare to Note 7... maybe S7E but it must to receive Grace UI fast. But still the body of N7 will be only awailable with S8 and maybe we will get a 4000 battery and a 6GB of RAM. But to wait for like 5 month nahh...
I would buy a Note 7 that is recalled, as long as it wasn't getting hot through use and charging. I'd buy one for about $400. But not more. I don't have more than $400 to burn.

I can certainly see why you feel this way. My wife and I got 3 different Samsung covers (flip cover, LED and the see-through) and a variety of leather cases and screen protectors. I'd be surprised if I get the money back I spend on that. And what to think of the vendors who produced these, and likely have lots in stock... Ugh, I'd hate to be on that end. It's seriously frustrating indeed... I guess I'm glad I still have my Note 4, most likely I'll go back to that until there's something comparable

totally inaccurate. IMEI blocking is done strictly through carriers. Since Samsung has no idea what phones are used on what carriers, they cannot block IMEI numbers.
If they dropped all Note 7s to the North, will they consider it an Act of War?

Who's getting rid of the note 7?

Just wondering who here is keeping the note 7 and taking the risk of it exploding? I'm happy to keep mine though little annoyed that they've stopped gear VR support and I'm 80% certain Samsung will eventually force us all to return the note 7 by maybe a software update that renders the phone useless.
I honestly have no idea what phone I'd get, I had the S7 edge as a temporary replacement phone while the recall was going on and it didn't feel as good as the note 7, the software wasn't as good and I missed the little features like the swipe gesture in the camera app for example. I still have my note 4 but it uses a different sim card so will have to get an adaptor but even then the note 4 seems really out dated in comparison but I get to keep the S-pen which is the biggest reason I got a note device in the first place. I also have a gear s2 smart watch and while it should work with other android phones it's just works better with a Samsung phone. I hope Samsung do something quick maybe release a note 8 and replace the note 7s with it lol there's just no alternatives.

Hanging on to it for as long as I possibly can. If the deadline for a replacement or refund is midnight on 31st December, I'll hand it in on 31st December.
Is a p**s take though like what about people who've brought cases for the note 7 and other accessories? I purchased my gear vr from ebay for £80 as the seller had it with the note 7 but didn't want it and I couldn't seem to find it anywhere online or in shops probably due to the recall. I had the S7 edge at the time so could still use it but now they've cut off note 7 support so I no longer can use my gear VR so I'd at least like to know exactly what's going on so I can possibly see about selling it. Add on top the money I've spent on apps which I can no long use on the gear VR it's just ridiculous. I personally wouldn't mind waiting through another recall as long as I get to keep and use the note 7 I have then just swap it for a new and hopefully completely safe note 7 but looks like the note 7 is done for.
I'm keeping mine. I will treasure it even more now knowing once it's gone, it's gone forever. Now I need to figure out a way getting rid of the 60% charging cap. I love this phone so much!

If I change the build.prop file, do you reckon I can trick the oculus app into thinking it's an S7 edge not a note 7?? I used it on the gear vr before the update and it seemed to work okay without getting stupidly hot even had it on charge lol.
The phones I want aren't out yet... Hoping final refund instructions come out in time to pre order the v20.. or maybe the pixel . I'm in the Philippines... Don't know how I can order the pixel lol

I did notice in my VZW account that my Note 7 now says "Upgrade Eligible". This wasn't there yesterday. Something on the back end happened.
At minimum, I'm going to deactivate this device and put an old phone on the account for now.
TMO has offered to exchange me out of this POS. But as others have said, there is nothing out there right now to really hold it down. So my question is this, Nougat won't be released for the N7 I suppose, what is the true lifespan of the phone with updates not being released for it? And of course, there is the explosion possibility?

Personally - and you have to make up your own mind on this - I am not even 0.000000000001 % bothered about the "explosion risk". You have about as much chance of winning Euromillions tonight, and in my view, that is no basis to reject a piece of equipment.
The lack of updates and also dismal resale value is much more concerning.
But worse than any of that, I think Samsung will send out an update that cripples the phone. They did it with Rev.1. so I have no reason to assume they won't do the same with Rev.2. Your choice to keep it may very well be taken out of your hands, which personally, I think is disgusting.

Yeah, I'm back on my OG HTC One, lol. So far 1 hour on the phone with Samsung and everyone is clueless. About to hang up and just hit VZW again in a day or two. I have to say, though, it's irritating to be paying on a device that is powered down and not activated on my line (Edge financing).
Time to cut loses. Thats what samsung did. The phone hase become a liability. Get your money back if you can.

Why don't you just use it? Seriously there's been like 8 with problems out of what, 2 million, 3 million? Seriously you have more chance of being run over than having a problem with the device.
The thing with statistics is they can be unintuitive and lead to strange conclusions. Let's say one phone in every 500,000 is going to develop a fault and catch fire. From Samsung's perspective, that means they can be certain they will have lots of unhappy customers, potential lawsuits and bad publicity and therefore it's a bit of a no-brainer to stop selling it.
But from your perspective, you have a 500,000:1 on chance that your phone will have no problems. And in the remotely unlikely event that it does, how likely is it to kill you, burn your house down or anything like that. Even less likely. There are ZERO such reports.
So it's up to you, but for me, it's a no brainer to keep using it, and I hope Samsung will respect that point of view and not cripple our phones with some unnecessary and unwanted forced update.

Yeah I agree I'm not so much concerned about the explosion risk but just the lack of support and updates in the future. Wish they'd just let us take the risk I for one wouldn't sue Samsung if my note 7 does explode there's little chance that you haven't heard about the issues from somewhere therefore it's not Samsung's fault that I took the risk.
What did samsung do with the phone after they recalled it, if they didn't fix the issue?
Samsung UK web site has no mention of recall for v2.
Doing nothing until Samsung (who I bought it from) contact me. Even then it won't be going back until it's knocked out by Samsung.

Indeed. Just looking it up now, you are 500 times more likely to die from riding a motorbike than you are to have a fire with your Note 7. (Assuming 1 phone per 500,000 has a problem.)
best buy exchanged mine out with no questions asked. I was told to even keep the 256GB SD card. unfortunate I went to the dark side and got iphone7 plus. The LG was just cheap and I was unimpressed. Buying the Google Pixel XL outright to bring over to Sprint was not a option for me. I am done with Sammy with all the issues I have had with there products since the Note 4 and other house hold appliances. Iphone was my only option.

Recall IMEI Block, How Low Will They Go?

Ok, so I'm one of the "brave" ones that is keeping the Galaxy Note 7 despite what's going on (I'm sorry if you don't agree with this).
Anyways, so simply enough I have used a 'Package Disabler app' to block any future updates that could be pushed onto the Note 7 that would cap the battery charge limit or annoying me with any pop ups & notifications to return it like they did on the first recall; if T-Mobile keeps sending me text messages to return it, then I'm blocking their number as well... these things will NO LONGER a problem.
My only concern now is that since the CPSC is involved and has pretty much officially issued a recall to return all the Note 7's back to Samsung, how LOW will they go to get us to do that? The worse case scenario that I have seen people bring up is that somehow, someway the carriers will "blacklist" or "block" the IMEI numbers of any active Note 7's on their network, thus rendering the phone pretty much useless.
I'm not sure if there's a deadline to return these recalled devices, but I would HATE for my IMEI to be blocked out of service 3 or 6 months down the line & then T-Mobile telling me I have to go through Samsung for a refund now since I missed the return window for carrier returns & exchanges.
I think this is down right RIDICOULUS, (we live in America) but I am not completely dismissing the possibility of this happening considering all of the bad energy behind this whole situation.
Just a thought though, do you think that maybe this will be the next step, to block the IMEI completely & FORCE an exchange from us "diehard" fans REFUSING to return it? Seems like they could flex that muscle in this situation but I don't know.

If they do the IMEI block, I'm obviously sunk. I suppose they might do that at some point, but I assume they would have to give advance warning. I'd also like to see if they put a deadline on returning the phone--although I can't imagine they could refuse a return after that.

they have said for everyone to turn off the phone and return it to the retailer, so they wouldn't actually need to give notice before blocking the phones as they have already directly informed everyone to turn off and return them now.
so if you are keeping one all you are doing is keeping a phone that is likely to have no further development and also likely to be heavily targeted by people to stop use of the phone. basically hanging onto the phone all you are doing is asking for problems, as you are keeping something that has been deemed unsafe and had a direct instruction from the manufacturer to turn off and return as soon as physically possible.

By direct instruction from the Manufacturer does this mean Samsung has sent out Emails or Txts to Note 7 Customers? I ask because from what I have heard they haven't (yet/so far) like was the scenario during the initial recall.

they have issued the instruction via various news outlets and media as they have to by law and also via the phone suppliers, networks in the UK have been texting/contacting all Note owners telling them to turn off and return the device. so they have fulfilled their need to give notice that is why yesterday there was a massive amount of media coverage as the media coverage is used as a form of notice as it also reaches people who purchased from unofficial sources.

You do realize, especially with the advent of the Internet (which brought about 'Alternative Media' that some of us Free-Thinkers totally do NOT follow Mainstream News in the slightest, or even have TV's, as anyone in their right mind should have figured out by now that 'News' is nothing more than misery and fear-mongering.

I feel kind of sad. Out of the large number of these phones only an extremely small fraction had a problem. We don't even know what the complete story was with the ones that had issues: Did the users use after-market chargers? Was it only a small lot of batteries that had issues?. I was looking forward to saving up and getting one.
The good side is that Samsung is a great company. I'm sure they will come out with a Note 7.5 or Note 8 in the near future that will be even better.

yet you are posting on a site that also covered the news that the phones should be turned off and returned, that is why I said other media as well as they have sent the info out in that many ways unless you are living under a rock you will have seen it.
@Novarider they have to put that as they can't force people to give up the phone, but basically by the way they have worked it if you hang onto the phone should it fail or have problems it comes back to you, should it break down the road it's discontinued so you have no option to get it fixed or replaced, the same as after the instruction the phone companies and other companies have the right to ban the phones use over safety concerns, so while they say voluntary basically you are taking all responsibility for the device.

the problem is with the new ones there is too much fear from people so it was easier to just kill the device.
Here in France it seems that Samsung will do the replacement of the phones, not the carriers. I think I'll ask for a S7Edge, and then I'm considering keeping both phones, not retirning the Note7... Apparently in the first recall, only the first phone batch was IMEI disabled, so if you didn't return it, you would end up with a phone-disabled device. But I don't really care if they disable my Note7 IMEI, as I wouldn't use it as a phone anymore but more like a Note phablet/media player/relic of the past (and kept safely inside a metallic/glass box while not in use). My only hope is that they would disable the new S7E I'd got, simply because I didn't return the Note7... But it's going to go to waste after all so I don't really think they'll care about it... What'd ya think? (Please no comments about risks and safety).

you will totally have to return the device to get a new one, as if you don't you technically still have the product even if they disable it.
They would not call it a voluntary recall then torn around and blacklist the imei of the devices. Blacklisting them would make it not voluntary

On first recall I got the replacement phone shipped with a box to return the old phone. I could've kept both phones if I wanted to. I'm pretty sure they'll do the same thing again but this time I'm really considering keeping it, not returning any phone back to Samsung. When IU asked the Samsung lady I got on the phone, she said that old phones will be IMEI blacklisted anyway, she didn't told me about anything else... but who knows .

it seems unlikely they will let the phones stay in the wild when returning, things will be up in the air due to the amount of people involved in the recall, but I would put money on when the dust settles they will go after the people who failed to return as they will technically have 2 devices while only paying for one.

The word you're looking for is "fraud"
They're shipped back and forth with tracking, are they not? How would you show it has been stolen?
Also, they wont be suing you, that's something an insurance agency will do.

they will ask for a crime report, meaning you would also need to make a false report to the police, or the insurance firm who is likely recovering the devices will come after you for it down the road.

I was just told Samsung is going to "turn off" the Note 7

In a chat with US Cellular I was just told "with the recall, it will not be able to stay on your account much longer, due at some point, Samsung will be turning off all the phones on all carriers."
I asked when but she said they do not know the date yet.
She also said I could re activate my Note 7 (which I didn't think was allowed) if the Note 5 I purchased online doesn't work properly.
It is inevitable.
They will try to get everyone to return or exchange their Note 7s first. And then this kill switch to reach out to those who has been living under a rock.
Unless you root the device and circumvent the kill switch.

what is more laughable is that he has never owned one. From memory he had/has an S7E and was thinking about upgrading (before all the shxtstorm).
I am willing to suffer a phone sizzle if it means I get a few more weeks with this fantastic phone. I understand the risks, they are significantly low, but I also understand the impact of a total battery failure (running without the 256G SD card currently to avoid damage to it in the event of the phone internally melting).
I do not appreciate BrOadbands incessant drilling of existing N7 users, worse than a 19 year old cop doing the "respect my authority" thing.
Only 2 phones have cooked in Australia, from the original batch (1 was a forum member on Whirlpool forums, the other Samsung indicated when they were quoting numbers), we were getting the second batch a bit later than you guys in the US which may have meant slightly improved production process (made in Vietnam though, if that means anything).
I am however(unfortunately) getting this replaced, as I do fly and the American FAA getting a bit nervous and doing the banning meant globally all airlines followed not to mention that Samsung are giving some financial incentives that may not last forever to replace with S7E/S7 (got told almost 2 weeks ago now by a local Samsung phone rep "your S7E is coming within 21 days"...)
I think part of the product pull by Samsung was not about an inherent fault in all units, but some inevitable butt covering, since the product reputation was tainted, no way to recover from that, the phone would be impossible to sell with all the transportation bans, and how many different battery icon colours could they use to indicate if you owned a v1,2 or 3 lol.
I do believe it had a higher than normal failure rate though, esp in the US, my speculation is the soft construction of the battery was allowing it to get sufficiently distorted during assembly that some further condition was causing battery failure for those excessively distorted (such as plate to plate crystal growth).

Essentially, it says that the anode SEI layer can break down in as low temps as 80degC including from external heating. I know when we had that dodgy Ocululus update, my CPU when I checked was over 70degC and the whole phone was very warm due to very high current draw due to the max CPU load. So heat from both current draw from the battery, and external heat from the CPU getting toasty would not have helped any phone where the battery was also a little squashed/distorted when packed into the phone during assembly.

This update is meant to correct all those replacement phones that run at 100% battery. Since this was found to be 1 of 3 suspected issues with the phone igniting the second time too

Would have preferred they nerfed the CPU instead. And disable fast charge and wireless charging. All to prevent it from generating too much heat. Limiting to 60% probably isn't going to help much.

If the battery has any charge at all it can still "explode" I am not sure this would make the device any less of a risk than a 100 charged battery. Sure the fire might be less but it would still pack a punch.
Really disabling fast charge would be more beneficial I would think.

Sorry. I didn't.
It was powered off for a few days. And I just got my V20. Turned it on to get some files out but I was shocked to find my Note 7 shut off. And then it rebooted and update my unit. And as expected, it was the 60% battery update.

If you paid any attention to the pictures we were shown about the burned out phones. There was a a complete burn out and the phones were destroyed. Not a single phone was just damaged a little and stopped working. That shows the battery had a complete or near complete charge.
The batteries burned out completely because of the amount of charge held into them. Not because of their chemical composition. If you know what I mean.
If you ever worked with batteries; You'll know they get very hot and can expand as they overcharge. Thus expansion plus the new sharp aluminum frame inside, may have been 1 of the reasons for ignition we believe.
Keeping your charge at 60/80% lowers the risk of ignition by a lot.

I actually think BroadBand or whatever actually did post a receipt of the purchase, although everyone knows you can find that on the internet. The person is a far-left lib/progressive who thinks their safe spaces are in jeopardy because a phone (Iphone 7 anyone??) may catch fire.
Anyway, I seriously, seriously doubt they will disable the phone completely. You bought the phone, and it is your phone. If you choose to use another battery inside the note 7, then press on (I have heard reports of folks trying this...it worked, but not sure of the specifics. One guy cracked his screen trying to get the battery out).
Plus, it is an FCC violation to disrupt a communications device. You don't know the person's circumstances. They may live on the fringe of civilization and haven't heard the news or didn't get the push. The first person that is harmed because their working phone was disabled will lead to humongous lawsuits.
A Sprint employee in Newnan Georgia told my daughter that Samsung would be shutting off her phone, and it was against the law for her to keep using. They pressured her hard, made her cry (she's young, first time away from home) because she couldn't get in touch with me. She didn't know what to do because she didn't want to get "arrested," which was the implication they were trying to make. She ended up getting pressured in a S7 because she was afraid of getting in trouble (and she is super furious for getting duped). She wanted to keep the phone until the release of the s8. She was in the store to pay her bill and they saw the phone sticking out of her pocket.

By the way, Samsung has publicly stated that less than half of the phones were returned. That indicates a million or so are still out there.
I promise you, PROMISE YOU, that the very FIRST Note7 to catch fire despite the recall (because not being returned), would be splattered over every news channel.
How many post-recall reports of exploding batteries have we seen??? As far as I can tell, ZERO!!!! Don't mean it won't happen, but I think the danger is over-blown. Samsung did it because of the media coverage. A single injury (if they had not recalled) given the history of the phone would have resulted in 10s of millions of dollars in damages via litigation.

How Long to Keep Note 7

Was thinking of switching to a Pixel but I went through a fairly nasty preorder fail with Verizon & Google so I wash my hands of that phone
Would like to hold on to the Note 7 until the Galaxy S8 release, what's the general consensus will Verizon kill the Note 7 off by either February or April
when the expected debut for the S8 is to allegedly arrive?
I'm in the same boat except I actually got my silver 128gb Pixel XL a day before launch and returned it. Reactivated my Note 7. I don't see how they can charge us for the device, they paid off the contract. Phone is my property. I plan to ride this until the S8 comes out...

All we can do is ride it out if we choose to keep it. I'm happy I did so far. I don't see that changing any time soon.
Verizon can take my payments for the phone at any time. I have a surplus in my Verizon account to do so. I did not default in any way. So, we will see.
They can't charge you for it if the terms of the contract were satisfied by the contract being paid off, at which time the device becomes your property. That's my take on it. I don't want anything they are offering right now..... so I'll wait..

Basically, all I'm doing is accumulating one month's phone bill over the course of 10 months. So when the Note8 is released I'll still have my upgrade in tact, I'll be able to get an early upgradeable Note9, and I can skip a phone payment 10 months from now.
I was advised that this course was the safest course and should disallow even the blocking of my phone's IMEI. But, as I said, we shall see. I was advised that the course I have chosen allows for legal recourse and is defensible if need be.
But, I am not an attorney.

Of course I have turned off updates and I get no annoying pop-ups. I have spoken with Verizon on the phone and they show no record of me ever owning a Note 7. Verizon are treating the device as if it never existed. I'm not a novice user and actually have had a thread here on XDA for over a month showing people all the possible apps and services they can disable. I currently have near 170 apps and services turned off and there is no way I'll ever get any OTA's or annoying pop-ups. My Note 7 is locked from outside interference and I just use it as a Wi-Fi device now.
If Verizon ever intended on charging people for the device after the second recall they would not have wiped it off people's account before they returned it but would rather have told people they must return it first.
