New HTC 10 Owner looking for issues - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Hello HTC fans,
I am gonna receive my HTC 10 tomorrow and I would like to immediately look for HW failures/defects, etc. to see if I have a faulty device.
My Question is., what should I check?
- dead pixels
- Speaker issues (I dont know what to check exactly)
- Microphone issues ( how to test?
- What else?
Can you please help me out?
Thanks in advance

Take it out of the box, put it on the charger. Make sure it charges to 100 percent, then use it.

That was quite obvious, I just thought there are "bad-batches" but if theres nothing like that (like it was with the m7 series) I am not worried

Get it out of the box, look if your display has a red tint, if it has a red tint install Dev Check and look which display is build in (Sharp or Tianma). If it is a Sharp display and hast red tint return it, if it's a Tianma display the red tint seems to go away after some days/weeks of usage.

Exactly no reason to worry about maybe having a bad unit before you even get it. Yes there will be a bad phone here and there. Be more excited you are getting a new phone!

The first thing to do is run the diagnostics. To do this, run the Help app. On the Help screen menu tap 'Troubleshooting' or 'Diagnostics tools' to use a troubleshooting wizard to check the basic hardware functions (alternatively, dial *#*#3424#*#*).

I found red tint on my phone at the bottom of my screen which didn't disappear after 3 weeks. In the end i got rid my phone as that tint was doing my head in.

What about the 2 years warranty from HTC? werent they able to replace or repair your device?

Yes had that option but I chose not to replace it as I prefer bigger screen. I thought I could live with smaller screen but clearly not. If it was 5.5 then I would have stuck with it definitely.

Well, its all personal preference .... for me the 5.7 XL was way too big (I have big fingers too...I am 198CM ) and the HTC 10 is just an upgraded m7 for me hence the love

Personally, I'd rather just return it and get a new one if it's within the first 30 days. Seems like more of a hassle to get repaired or possibly sent a refurb in exchange.

TEST: Fix Flickering Screen And All Other Issues

I have an idea, that I'm willing to test. This is my first post in the Dev Section, so go easy on me if I have made any mistakes.
I'm sure many of you are aware of the issues with the One X, Flickering, Glitchy UI etc. So, I came up with a idea -
I have 2 HTC One X in my possession, one works flawlessly but has a Yellow screen (Because it is possibly made by Sharp), the other which is my first one, has flickering and every problem you can imagine.
So, If I was to get the ROM from my working Yellow screen One X, onto my first One X, is it possible that this would stop all the problems AND work on the clearer screen (possibly made by Acer)?
I'm willing to test it. But my time is running out. Both phones are due back within 3 weeks now as I've filed for a refund from Amazon. And before I do this, will it stop me from getting a refund? Regardless, the phones have issues (I guess the yellow screen is not a bug, but it is not the phone I purchased - if you get me).
So, what do I do? How do I dump my ROM, and how do I get it on my first One X?
All I know is to unlock them both on htcdev.com, but rooting and getting Clockwork/xRecovery (whatever it's name is now), I haven't got a clue. I've done it with all my other devices (around 6 or 7), but this is a different kettle of fish.
Thanks!
DM
Are you assuming the screens are made by Sharp or Acer as they are the suppliers HTC chose for the Sensation?

Yeah, it's just an assumption. It's very probable.
I don't know if it's possible to return an unlocked phone, because unlocking the phone voids some parts of the warranty. But i believe that there's a way to return the phone to it's locked state by re-locking and flashing the stock RUU, but i haven't tried it, and i don't know if it's possible to do with the one X.
You really think the phones have different ROMs? Because that's what you are suggesting, and in that case there would be different RRU's also. And also a clean RRU install would fix the flicker in that case, which I'm sure it doesn't.. And also, I think the screens are made by Samsung, but I'm not sure. The few I've tested have had the same panel ID even though one is warmer (yellower) than the other.
And lastly, you won't be able to return it if you've unlocked it though htcdev.com.. Maybe, if your lucky they don't check, you could re-lock it and hope for the best. But I guess Amazon know's what to look for. You better leave the dev'ing to the devs.

Your right. Not unless the FW is stored on a server and somehow is locked to you when you download the FW for reinstall. I'll give this a shot. I'm back on Ubuntu now, so I'm not 100% sure how to update my HTC using it... I'll look.

Check the software version number, if it's the same then there is no benefit to "copying" the rom from one to the other.

I just thought it might be worth a shot. No one seems to have an answer as to why the screen flickers. I'm just trying to narrow what could be wrong down by doing tests.

The answer is most probably faulty hardware, I've tried loads of roms not one fixes the flicker, mine gets replaced Monday.

It's surely not software. Maybe if the nand is broken and your screen drivers just happens to be at the bad blocks every time (and don't get remapped) No, don't waste your time and possibly money on this, it's most likely faulty hardware anyway. You could "adb pull /proc/last_dmsg last_dmsg" then open that file in a text editor and check if the both phones hade the same panel ID. If not, then it could be driver-related. Or maybe it's as simple as a loose connection.
I am pretty sure the flicker is software and not hardware. I get it, it normally starts ( but is not limited to ) when on the home screen. If you are experiencing flicker navigate somewhere with the option to bring up a menu. When I bring up a menu over the flickering screen the menu is solid and does not flicker while the activity underneath is still distorted.
I have tried killing sense to let it restart and that normally gets rid of the flicker.
(I call it flicker but it is really more like the image on the screen warps from the bottom but stays still at the top in a fluctuating way.)

I don't know if i let it overheat.
I played games while charging the phone.
Maybe it overheated, because it got pretty hot.
Did i make something wrong?
I think it's design flaw if it can overheat in normal condition.

I played this "game" a few weeks ago. I also live outside the US, so I had to send it back for repair, due to a speaker problem (the speaker was 'crackling') and no firm in europe could fix it.. They were the worst weeks of my summer,it took almost 2 months to get my phone back, but I dont have any issues with the phone since then. Hope youll have more luck, 2 months were really too much.

I'm seeing something similar but It's not always there, only shows up occasionally when the screen goes off and I wake it, started happening using liteROM
It's not a "stuck pixel". AMOLEDs can have dead pixels at worst (and it's MUCH rarer than in LCDs and usually it's only one color that doesn't respond). There's some deeper issue. Take a screenshot and see if it shows up there -- that'll tell us if it's in software or hardware.

If I have two bright green pixels, which are on all the time on the sa screen of my tab 7.7, what is this called then?

Small yellow patch on screen

There is a small rectangular yellow patch in the upper left corner of the screen that's really only noticeable on a white background. I've had the M8 about 6 weeks and I swear it wasn't there when new. And there seems to be the hint of a new one in the upper right corner.
I've googled and haven't come up with any mention of this with the M8. Are they burn in spots? I can live with it (having tried the Find 7a, if you know what I mean), but would like to know if it's something that can be helped or if it's progressive. Has anyone else seen this?

I developed a spot similar to what you are describing. Mine was on the left side of the phone around where the volume buttons start on the other side. It was probably about a centimeter long and maybe half-a-centimeter wide. It was really noticeable only on white screens like you already mentioned but it bothered me to no end. I don't remember my phone having that either so I believe it developed for whatever reason. I actually sent it to HTC and received a replacement. I guess they deemed it to be a flaw. Hope this helps.

It does, yes, thx. My patch is pretty much the same size (1cm x .3cm, give or take). My concern basically is how it affects the resale value. I bought mine from Amazon, but I'm past the 30 day window for exchanges, so I guess I will have to deal with HTC directly. Did they send you a brand new phone or a refurbished one?
They told me that it was going to be refurbished. Honestly though I couldn't tell it apart from a new one. Mine was perfect with no flaws in any way.
And one more question, if you don't mind. I've done pretty much everything I could to void the warranty - unlock bootloader, soff, root, custom firmware & ROM. I'm assuming I'll have to get back as close to stock as possible (although some have said if it's a hardware issue that's not needed). What was your experience in this regard?
any luck?

I have the same issue - have tried every software to recalibrate the screen but its still just getting worse. Any idea if HTC will do a warranty on the screen hardware if you have unlocked the bootloader and done s-off? I did the unlock through HTC dev if this helps or not... I am confident I can reset the s-off but they will know its been unlocked regardless of what I reset
This is definatley a hardware issue so I would hope HTC being so dev friendly would warrant it still... But looking to see if any one else managed to get this done.
Thanks
I've now gone through 4 M8's, all have developed the same issue. It seems to occur when the phone gets warm (I.E. data use in mediocre service areas). I tried rotating how I put the phone in my pocket with #3, just in case the issue was due to it being bent/crunched, but the spot came back in the same location. I'm thinking that something gets hot and delaminates the LCD under the glass.
I'm about ready to send in #4 and go for #5. I am paying for the Verizon Warranty service, they haven't given me any hassle, just sent me a new device over night. Regardless, I'm disappointed--I love the phone, but dealing with the issue every 3 months is annoying. The longer you let it go the more discolored it'll get, until eventually you can't read the text under the burned area.
Good luck!
today appears on mine after 1 yr of use maybe is because integrated Avago ACPM-7600 power amplifier module check htc one m8 motherboard and the spot and sounds like te ic is overheating , i use a lot of mods on my htc one m8 harman kardon , mod mine is a att ,also 2 sound mods more increasing the sound level i believe is just heat and it kills the screen sorry for bad english

It is a screen burn ,i have tried to solve problem with Screen Burn-in Tool app from Play Store
but no success, this problem have also few my friends with lg g4,i newer buy any lg phone again, lg is better to produce tv sets and wasmachines because as phone manufactures sucks.
Same issue here too, it isn't necessarily burn in, more image retention I guess which tends to happen to some LCD's, tried all sorts of things to fix it, if anyone knows how to fix this that would be awesome
Guess we'll have to either get the device replaced or replace the LCD

If it's retention the LCD won't have to be replaced. Just wait a little, and it's gone.
And it inst always there, it knows to disaper.
And one more thing, it constantly changin, for example now i see 12:30, and for 2 minutes i will see 12:32, not one picture burned in.
Sorry for my English, i hop you will understand what i trying to say.

Its pretty bad retention if thats the case, not permanent...only really see it on grayish backgrounds....Ive left the phone off for days...switched it back on and within a matter of minutes my status bar is burned in lol
Same problem here pink burn that appears only on gray with a few minutes of use.
I was wondering if its just my device or not.
And now that i know that is the case i guess switching the phone display will not solve it.
I am getting this issue as well. Pinkish tint (when there is a light grey background) and image retention on the top of the screen and I can see those little icons. Did you get the problem after motherboard replacement due to bootloop issue? I am regretting my decision in purchasing LG G4.. :crying:

It is the display, friend of mine replaced his and he no longer had this issue.
I think he ordered a $70 USD replacement off Amazon and did it himself since LG requested for him to send the phone to Taiwan.

To be honest it does not really bother me,the only thing is that i can not put a gray wallpaper :/.
And when you mention this i think it actually started only after i got my motherboard replaced because of the bootloop but i might just did not notice until than..
And no regreting is needed alot of people that i know with s6 are not so happy about it..and the only other option was m9...so.....if you like me and had no choice the g4 was the smartest choice lol and i am quite happy with it...

Well i was talking about that, if you would give your phone to lg they will replace with the same display..so i dont see the point...
And the replacement displays you cant tell how are they as in brightness battery drain and color accuracy...
I guess if it will get worse than i will probably replace it..for now its fine enough lol

Meh...it's really not a huge problem lol, it grew on me after some time and it doesn't bother me anymore
Hasn't gotten worse over the past 6-ish months or so, so I guess it'll stay this way
I'm from Jamaica so sending it to Taiwan is going to be a bit of a problem
But as for the replacement part, I definitely get what you're saying, I asked my friend about his for the purpose of this thread and he told me that the battery life is the same, brightness/quality is similar to the original display, worse case scenario if you need to change the screen I'd say go for it.

I have found a some kind temporary workaround ( i don't know is that correct language expression in english so sorry for that )
Mainly here is what I did : I have flash latest SUPERXE kernel for stock rom android 6.0 from here , after flash from Play Store I have installed app Kernel Adiutor ,from the drop-down menu selected Screen section and aply this settings :
RED=230
GREEN=235
BLUE=235
Minimum RGB Value=35
Saturation Intensity= 30
Screen Hue=0
Screen Value= 125
Screen Contrast=127
After this no more red colored retention on gray background, not even in TWRP recovery.
This solution is only for rooted devices with unlocked bootloader,I hope this will help You
After kernel installation i have run few times antutu benchmark,so maybe this is also have influence on screen refresh.

This worked for me, too Thanks for sharing.
Anyway I will try warranty soon.
Dear guys, 12/2015 I have same issue that burning, my local warranty service ok change a new LCD, it is very OK after replacement, no burn any more. But after 6 months the same issue come back, it is hardware issue. LG always have issue about hardware in flagship more than other competitor.
Not a G4 owner but I have used a G4 before as well as a V10 and a G5, currently own the V10. This issue is present on all three devices and isn't a question of if it will happen, it's a matter of when it will happen. I noticed this issue with my display a few months ago and the entire affected area has a weird yellowish hue to it which is most noticeable on a lighter grey hue and as of now have grown used to it to a degree: still annoys me a bit. Also had a friend whom I recommended the G4 to and he had this issue with retention since he got it though he barely notices it since his phone is almost always set at 0% brightness
Anyways, at this point the main cause for this as I've said in a couple of threads is the display technology itself. I'm guessing this is one of the side effects Quantum Display has for offering near-amoled quality with vivid colors and blacks in comparison to regular LCD panels. Basically, even replacing the display is a temporary issue and still a lottery as you may get one with no issues until a year later or one that already has retention out of the box.
At this point, I might even tolerate amoled displays or non-Quantum Display lcd panels but it's too bad LG makes great phones. Oh well, just another thing to keep in mind when getting a phone from LG

I started getting this burn in and i am 95% sure that it didn't happen before. My G4 was in bootloop so i sent it back and i think that they replaced motherboard. After about 2 months of usage i started noticing this and as i said i am 95% sure that it didn't happen before motherboard was replaced, only if i didn't realise that but i am sure there was not this problem. :/ :/ :/ Is it actually possible that it is coz of motherboard replacement and that it can't be fixed even if i replace screen?!?! ((

It's not a motherboard issue but a display issue. With the G4, V10, and G5, there will be displays that will have retention out of the box or in a matter of a few months and then those who don't get it until 2 years into use or in fact, never at all. Only solution is replacing the display but that's a bit of a lottery in it of itself as you don't know if it won't have its own issues and I'd imagine constantly buying new LCD digitizers to grow costly that you might as well just buy a new phone altogether.

Try " Bluelight Filter " app from Google store , I had the same problem until I used the app .
