Small yellow patch on screen - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There is a small rectangular yellow patch in the upper left corner of the screen that's really only noticeable on a white background. I've had the M8 about 6 weeks and I swear it wasn't there when new. And there seems to be the hint of a new one in the upper right corner.
I've googled and haven't come up with any mention of this with the M8. Are they burn in spots? I can live with it (having tried the Find 7a, if you know what I mean), but would like to know if it's something that can be helped or if it's progressive. Has anyone else seen this?

I developed a spot similar to what you are describing. Mine was on the left side of the phone around where the volume buttons start on the other side. It was probably about a centimeter long and maybe half-a-centimeter wide. It was really noticeable only on white screens like you already mentioned but it bothered me to no end. I don't remember my phone having that either so I believe it developed for whatever reason. I actually sent it to HTC and received a replacement. I guess they deemed it to be a flaw. Hope this helps.

It does, yes, thx. My patch is pretty much the same size (1cm x .3cm, give or take). My concern basically is how it affects the resale value. I bought mine from Amazon, but I'm past the 30 day window for exchanges, so I guess I will have to deal with HTC directly. Did they send you a brand new phone or a refurbished one?

They told me that it was going to be refurbished. Honestly though I couldn't tell it apart from a new one. Mine was perfect with no flaws in any way.

And one more question, if you don't mind. I've done pretty much everything I could to void the warranty - unlock bootloader, soff, root, custom firmware & ROM. I'm assuming I'll have to get back as close to stock as possible (although some have said if it's a hardware issue that's not needed). What was your experience in this regard?

any luck?

I have the same issue - have tried every software to recalibrate the screen but its still just getting worse. Any idea if HTC will do a warranty on the screen hardware if you have unlocked the bootloader and done s-off? I did the unlock through HTC dev if this helps or not... I am confident I can reset the s-off but they will know its been unlocked regardless of what I reset
This is definatley a hardware issue so I would hope HTC being so dev friendly would warrant it still... But looking to see if any one else managed to get this done.
Thanks

I've now gone through 4 M8's, all have developed the same issue. It seems to occur when the phone gets warm (I.E. data use in mediocre service areas). I tried rotating how I put the phone in my pocket with #3, just in case the issue was due to it being bent/crunched, but the spot came back in the same location. I'm thinking that something gets hot and delaminates the LCD under the glass.
I'm about ready to send in #4 and go for #5. I am paying for the Verizon Warranty service, they haven't given me any hassle, just sent me a new device over night. Regardless, I'm disappointed--I love the phone, but dealing with the issue every 3 months is annoying. The longer you let it go the more discolored it'll get, until eventually you can't read the text under the burned area.
Good luck!

today appears on mine after 1 yr of use maybe is because integrated Avago ACPM-7600 power amplifier module check htc one m8 motherboard and the spot and sounds like te ic is overheating , i use a lot of mods on my htc one m8 harman kardon , mod mine is a att ,also 2 sound mods more increasing the sound level i believe is just heat and it kills the screen sorry for bad english

Screen Flicker - Response from HTC

I have had my One X since last week on O2, I have noticed the screen flicker on full brightness. So I decided to contact HTC about this and they told me that there must be a problem with my device and to send it back to O2 and get a new one.
If that true then the new 1.28 OTA will not fix the problems that we myte have and it’s a hardware fault 
What do you class as a flicker? I notice my screen dimming and brightening fairly regularly under artificial light. Is your flickering more regularly?

You are right. Go and return it for a new one... HTC told me the same!

I'm the same.
Had an undranded One X from phones for you with terrible screen flicker.
I phoned HTC and they said it was def not normal or something that could be fixed with a software update.
I'm just back from exchanging it for a new one and this one is flicker free.
seems there are different types of screen flickers...
i experienced once something like a bad analog tv reception on a very small rectangular portion in the upper left corner when using the browser. you couldn't figure out what was "underneath" it.
it disappeared the same way it appeared...out of the blue
Hi, guys. What do you mean by screen flicker? Im finding that with mine on full brightness it appears as if the backlight part is flickering. Is this what you guys have had? thanks

When you say screen flicker is this happening all the time? I mean are you talking on the home screen and in apps or just when things are loading etc...?

this is not a flicker this one is the browser glitch
silly game HTC is making us play really....more n more i realize i was stupid not to keep the grey that was running perfectly
I just can't see how it can be hardware...
Mine is flickering at times too.It seems like just about every device that is out there is doing it. I still think its software based, and probably a setting to do with the LCD display. If its hardware then HTC are going to run out of phones...
it's what is being discussed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592157
and HTC CS said the same to me, do a DOA. So I don't think it's software related. Those responsible at HTC should have let their employees know by now if it was SF related, so there's no indications it is so.
Thinking back to when my MacBook had a flickering problem a few years back and when I remember a Dell laptop at work having had an issue before too; I am sure Apple/Dell simply released firmware updates to fix the problem as it was an update that had caused the problem.
Surely something similar can/will be done with the HTC? Maybe its not happening on all devices and is inconsistant so HTC are telling people to DOA there devices whilst they work on a fix for it (maybe OTA)?
I just find it hard to believe that I have had 2x devices now and both have suffered different issues that it could always be the hardware. It would have to be seriously bad luck for 2x phones to come with issues down to the hardware; usually when this many people are having problems its a software issue over hardware (isn't it?).
I mean mine is flickering slightly on certain screens or during certain actions, I don't want to DOA a second device just to get this problem again as I really do love the phone. If the flickering can/will be fixed then I am happy to wait for that, but as mentioned before at this rate everyone with be DOA'ing devices just for the sake of it as different devices just seem to have the same and/or similar issues.
I have this problem. What is weird is that if I charge the phone fully the problem disappears until discharge at reaching like 80% where it starts to appear again and gets worst over discharge. I'd like to know if I'm alone. If not there are chances an OTA can solve it as it would be some kind of bad power management of the screen. And we all know our power management has some troubles

Well I didn't notice it at all today, but I have noticed it when my device got to around 68% battery. Although it could of triggered before but I might not have been on the device. Whilst I was using it from 100% down to 86% everything was running perfectly fine with no flicker at all.
Could it be an app/widget in the background that is causing it? Then again probably not as we would all of had to install that same app/widget so ignore me there (thinking out loud).
It seems a lot of the initial launch day stock have the flicker.
I got mine on the 5th from Phones4U and my phone and some others sold that day have been returned to the same store.
The one I got today is totally flicker free on all colours. The screen seems totally different. It's not as blindingly bright as my original one but of a much better quality.
It may be software related but this would suggest otherwise.
If the thoery of it appearing while battery is going down it could just be some underpowering of the screen. That sounds logical and solvable via OTA.
I don't think any app could do that

Yeah it does... As I said thinking back to Macbook/Laptop and the flicker (which had LCD screens) they were sorted via a firmware upgrade as I mentioned; which really would lead me to think OTA could sort it and that HTC are saying to DOA devices simply because they don't have a solution right at this moment in time.

Wasn't aware of this MacBook case. Nice to hear.
As I had some troubles with HTC i can tell you that (at least in France it works this way) their support service is like a different company. There is no communication between them and that is wanted for you not to be able to go far in complains. The people at these support center just read there scripts and know less of the product than we do. They can't be aware of early releases issues this way so for them the only solution is a new device. In the end that is stupid because they loose money and their good reputation

Thats exactly how it happens over here mate; would rather do the quick fix (handset exchange) than worry about the problem as they are reading from a script and probably don't even really understand the problem... By giving you another device they can simply bide time to report the problem to the technical team to work on a resolution.
I get that flicker only at lock screen when the notification lock screen its select it. Other than that none. So I can't use that lockscreen

TEST: Fix Flickering Screen And All Other Issues

I have an idea, that I'm willing to test. This is my first post in the Dev Section, so go easy on me if I have made any mistakes.
I'm sure many of you are aware of the issues with the One X, Flickering, Glitchy UI etc. So, I came up with a idea -
I have 2 HTC One X in my possession, one works flawlessly but has a Yellow screen (Because it is possibly made by Sharp), the other which is my first one, has flickering and every problem you can imagine.
So, If I was to get the ROM from my working Yellow screen One X, onto my first One X, is it possible that this would stop all the problems AND work on the clearer screen (possibly made by Acer)?
I'm willing to test it. But my time is running out. Both phones are due back within 3 weeks now as I've filed for a refund from Amazon. And before I do this, will it stop me from getting a refund? Regardless, the phones have issues (I guess the yellow screen is not a bug, but it is not the phone I purchased - if you get me).
So, what do I do? How do I dump my ROM, and how do I get it on my first One X?
All I know is to unlock them both on htcdev.com, but rooting and getting Clockwork/xRecovery (whatever it's name is now), I haven't got a clue. I've done it with all my other devices (around 6 or 7), but this is a different kettle of fish.
Thanks!
DM
Are you assuming the screens are made by Sharp or Acer as they are the suppliers HTC chose for the Sensation?

Yeah, it's just an assumption. It's very probable.
I don't know if it's possible to return an unlocked phone, because unlocking the phone voids some parts of the warranty. But i believe that there's a way to return the phone to it's locked state by re-locking and flashing the stock RUU, but i haven't tried it, and i don't know if it's possible to do with the one X.
You really think the phones have different ROMs? Because that's what you are suggesting, and in that case there would be different RRU's also. And also a clean RRU install would fix the flicker in that case, which I'm sure it doesn't.. And also, I think the screens are made by Samsung, but I'm not sure. The few I've tested have had the same panel ID even though one is warmer (yellower) than the other.
And lastly, you won't be able to return it if you've unlocked it though htcdev.com.. Maybe, if your lucky they don't check, you could re-lock it and hope for the best. But I guess Amazon know's what to look for. You better leave the dev'ing to the devs.

Your right. Not unless the FW is stored on a server and somehow is locked to you when you download the FW for reinstall. I'll give this a shot. I'm back on Ubuntu now, so I'm not 100% sure how to update my HTC using it... I'll look.

Check the software version number, if it's the same then there is no benefit to "copying" the rom from one to the other.

The answer is most probably faulty hardware, I've tried loads of roms not one fixes the flicker, mine gets replaced Monday.

It's surely not software. Maybe if the nand is broken and your screen drivers just happens to be at the bad blocks every time (and don't get remapped) No, don't waste your time and possibly money on this, it's most likely faulty hardware anyway. You could "adb pull /proc/last_dmsg last_dmsg" then open that file in a text editor and check if the both phones hade the same panel ID. If not, then it could be driver-related. Or maybe it's as simple as a loose connection.
I am pretty sure the flicker is software and not hardware. I get it, it normally starts ( but is not limited to ) when on the home screen. If you are experiencing flicker navigate somewhere with the option to bring up a menu. When I bring up a menu over the flickering screen the menu is solid and does not flicker while the activity underneath is still distorted.
I have tried killing sense to let it restart and that normally gets rid of the flicker.
(I call it flicker but it is really more like the image on the screen warps from the bottom but stays still at the top in a fluctuating way.)

Sorry! That was a genuine mistake! I wasn't looking where I was clicking :S

[Q] Can they keep me on the contract with faulty phone??

Hi,
On the 5th of April I signed a 24-months contract with Three and got a HOX with it.
I've got this package from a Three Store (sadly....).
From day one I had coverage problem at home (and only around my block) serious enough for them to give me a free 28-days while they try to fix the situation in my area (central London, by the way).
Also, yesterday I heard/read that Three, very professionally, will just skip this 1.28 OTA upgrade (which could have improved the situation with my coverage problem).
As if this was not enough, I was reading about this "screen flex" problem that most of white HOXs have and how HTC said they will replace all these faulty handset.
Sure enough, my handset had this problem, so I went today at the store and asked for replacement; they had 4 models in store and ALL of them were more or less flawed!!!
I asked them what I should do and they said they would order new stock...
At this point I asked them, if also with the new batch of phones this problem persisted, if I could brake the contract and return the phone: the guy said "it cannot be done. The contract cannot be broken in any case". All I could do was take the black model.....
Now, I moved in the UK recently and I don't know exactly how these kind of disputes are handled in this country, but do you think this is normal?
I am having the worst service ever, several difficulties and the phone they sold me is faulty (not unusable, but HTC officially admitted it's a fault): can they really just say "We won't terminate your contract."??
In Italy in this case I would appeal to some kind of "Consumer agency" to ask for help, but here I don't know how to move.....
What do you suggest??
Should I just wait for the new batch of phones to arrive? What if that doesn't work either??
Thank you very much....
p.s. Too bad I discovered too late that the worst thing I could have done was buying the phone from a store and not online....I couldn't imagine that would have made any difference....

I am in fact talking about that issue, yes....
But if HTC admits it is a build flaw and they are ready to replace the handset (which is my understanding it's how things are), shouldn't that mean I can have a replacement or, if the problem doesn't get solved, a refund??
After all, this issue affects only white HOXs and on a per-handset basis...this looks like a build problem IMHO...

The UK Sale of Goods act will protect you if you can prove that the item isn't fit for purpose. I doubt the flex will be a basis to use it though

What snowwhite007 said.
The way LCDs are designed means that if you apply pressure then you'll get distortion. It isn't a flaw in the screen or the phone. You need to push much harder than you would during normal operation for it to happen.
I understand....
Ok, well, I never said it would make my phone unusable...I was just worried that the screen would be weaker because of this issue....
However, we'll se how it goes in time!
Thanks for you answers
Three say that they are working on a newer than 1.28 version and will be released in May. (personally, I think its flannel, it really is the 1.28 version we have seen here but with their crap on it and are calling it something different to cover up the delay in getting it out. Call me cynical if you like, lol)
Anyway, the 1.28 will fix the connection problems, at least it has done on most peoples handsets that post on here.

Tbh I can't see why people are considering the flex thing as an issue, like said above, try do that on any LCD tv, or monitor or LCD phone screen, it all does it, but would you return your tv because of that? No because that is how it is. My dhd did that when pushing stupidly hard on the screen, same as the one x, this is in no way a design flaw! It's people abusing their devices imo.

Apart from the "pressing screen for rainbow effect", are you guys having the same problem as me, wherein I can actually press the whole screen on the left hand side and the screen physically moves. It clicks in and out of the phone, as if to suggest its not fitted properly. Is this the same fault you guys have? I'm getting my 4th replacement tonight, really pissed off at the moment

Is one dead pixel worth a repair?

Hi there, I've got a gray one x since may, it works fine, I have just some issues: major one is one dead pixel (or a grain of dust, but I bet on the pixel) placed a bit above the "e" in "one" word at boot...it's hardly noticeable with dark colours, but it's still quite middle-positioned.
Second issue is a stuck pixel, a red one, which appears only on some black/gray gradients (not present on opaque skin dock bar, for example, slightly visible on dark stock Htc keyboard)...it really doesn't bother me at all, but could be "useful" to increase defective pixels count.
Last problem is a bit of space at top and bottom of the display...it doesn't let lights out or stuff like that,it just gathers a bit (not much indeed) of dust which remains between unibody and display borders.
Do you think I could get a repair based on these issues (mainly pixels, as I'm not sure that "dust space" is actually a problem)?
I even dropped my phone once, so it has a liiiiight "dent" on the right bottom corner (amd some light get out, sadly, but I can't ask warranty repair for that)...and I'm guessing if they could refuse repair based on that, and maybe even charge return shipment costs (that's an awful policy in my opinion).
I'm italian, and people here say that I could try and it's most like a toss the coin situation, but since I'd need to wait till September (nothing works fine in this country in August) I'd like to gather some stats to decide to wait more or throw that f***ng bootloader out of the window and start to mod as it's meant to be
Thanks for any help

yup it can be replaced
I would try for a repair/replacement. A dead pixel around the center can get annoying.
I have a stuck pixel at around 5 o clock of the screen, but I didn't get it repaired. The stuck pixel like you said is visible in dark or black backgrounds. I barely even notice it when I'm using the phone. Sometimes I'll notice it when I'm watching a video but its still really really small because of the number of pixels on this huge screen.
Get your phone absolutely flawless in terms of hardware defects before you ever unlock the bootloader, because once you do HTC seems to decide that it means that they can throw the warranty out the window.

Yeah HTC is kinda bad on that front. I mean how could custom software contribute to dead pixels and other hardware issues. If it's hardware related it should be covered by the warranty.

That's why I'm asking...my previous samsung phones have been modded on day one
It's quite sad to think that this community grew upon Htc products and countless mods, and now they're getting that tighter on this matter.
Thanks for your opinion guys, don't you think that the dent will be used as a "caused by user" excuse, then?
With a dent and an unlocked bootloader, HTC sure has enough excuses to refuse warranty. But you can always try your luck.
I called HTC UK before unlocking my boot loader to ask about warranty straight from the horse’s mouth. First I was told it voids all warranty, but after some discussion about how HTC dev has worded their T&C and talking to two other people from technical help division I was told that the final decision is upto the repair center. When HTC themselves can’t give a clear answer I don’t think anyone here can.

Rooting on the very first day is a pretty ignorant move.. Even though Samsung doesn’t have an official disclaimer for rooted devices on their web site like HTC does; they too reserve the right to refuse warranty (and its general knowledge). Its discussed many times here and everywhere else. Some carriers specifically state it on their web sites and contracts. Samsung may not be as strict as HTC on the matter, but I personally know a person who was denied a hardware warranty claim for a rooted Samsung Galaxy S.

I've sent in a rooted (and dented) HTC Desire in for warranty 3 times so far (one of which was when it was running CM7) and it was accepted and fixed with no issues at all, so I think it's more like one of those YMMV things.

Yes it is, I have come across threads where some (like you) have managed claim warranty while others have failed. So there is always a risk with any manufacturer. But more so with HTC’s because they have a disclaimer to which you have to agree twice while unlocking the boot loader. So its always wise to at least make sure the device is clear of any factory defects before pulling the trigger.

Wait, I have LOCKED bootloader (eagerly waiting to unlock, but I'm waiting for this warranty reason)...my main concern is the dent (which can't cause a dead pixel, but if they want to act like *****es they could use that ).
As per Samsung phones, it's so easy to bring everything to stock without traces that it's kind of a non-issue

That's the only way to use Titanium and restore your phone and start testing it though properly

Oh, ok, guess I misread your post.
As for Samsung devices, I know they can be restored, but provided you are in a position to do so. In the example I gave earlier, the USB port was broken, so he couldn't use a tool like Odin/heimdal to flash a stock ROM before sending it in. I just took it as an example to show that even Samsung doesn't tolerate flashing.

HOX Screen broken? GPU or software?

Good day guys,
I've read a number of threads on this forum about HOX screen problems and never quite had any until a couple of days ago.
All of a sudden I started getting yellow and pink pixels all over my screen. I thought that this was just a software issue in the beginning so I rooted, formated, installed a custom rom, and no luck, still have the same problem with the screen.
There is a number of interesting facts about this problem:
1) I have this when I restart the phone, in the boot menu, in the clockwork recovery, you can see the edge of the pixels being pink or some other random color.
2) When I press down hard enough around the volume+ area the problem seems to go away.
I wonder where this is the GPU dying on me, or perhaps this has to do with the connectors that run to the screen?
The phone never fell, or had any major damage, I did have it in my pocket all the time and when sitting down I guess that could stress the exterior of the phone.
Here are the pics:

I really do wonder if I can get it back for warranty now, since its rooted, since this is obviously a hardware problem rather than software.
There is only one way to find out. They might repair it for free if you ask nicely enough.

Would be nice to get a one to one replacement accept that I bought it in The Netherlands and I am currently in Minsk, Belarus for work)))
Man its a nightmare reading all the HTC One X problems, HTC has always made such nice phones, and they messed up just a bit along the way.
