Does encryption impact performance?? - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Wondering if the speed of the phone is affected by the encryption. My Nexus 9 (encrypted) seems to take a very long time to boot. I don't really feel the encryption is necessary in my case, so I'm thinking I might want to disable it on the 10

No, it's not. FDE barely has an impact these days considering the encryption/decryption is being done in hardware instead of software.

Thanks

Any benchmarks or comparisons to back this up? There's the power usage angle as well.

Phone Over Heating Issues

I have an issue with my phone overheating. Meaning my battery gets ridiculously hot. Its hot the the touch especially during use of my data or heavy use in general. I know it's not a ROM issue nor is it a kernel issue. Why? Because I have gone back to stock and it actually gets hotter.
Would simply replacing the battery with another OEM battery fix this issue? Or can it simply be the hardware? Or could it both? Would it be worth a shot to replace just the battery? I wish I took the time to take it into T-Mobile when I first bought the phone, but I assumed it was because it was stock. (Dumb decision, I know). Any insight would be appreciated.

get a battery and phone temp app and report how hot it actually gets. Maybe get a case if its not abnormal type of hot. I live in Phoenix AZ and it gets up to 118° here and I'm outside using my phone mostly if in shade and I've seen my phone get to 124° granted it wasn't good and I wish that didn't happen, no harm was done.

KTweaker app shows the phone heating up to 56*C so that was my main concern. What app do you use?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
That really high if you aren't effected by sun light and external heat. Maybe get a new battery. Amazon has em cheap.

Try flashing a different modem. Especially if you are using baseband UVDMD5. Try LJC or LJA.

I will try that out and let you guys know how my phone reacts to them. Thanks Doc.

Can someone shed some light on why the latest CWM recovery has "fix permissions" removed in advanced settings? Is it not necessary for that anymore? Lol. Confused..

Judging from past experience, are you shore it is the battery? It is actually extremely common for the phones proccessor to react differently to different roms and heap up which will cause the entire back of your phone to be hot to the touch. The proccessor is located right below the battery compartment. If this is the case I would first try flashing a different kernal and also check to see if your proccessor is overclocked and perhaps lowering the maximum mhz. Usually around 1096 is a pretty good low speed that will still keep your phone fast in my oppinion. See if that helps you. If it is the battery, the only real cause might be a defective battery in which I would stop using immediately since it may cause damage to your phone.

I've tried different kernels and the best kernel that works for me is Ktoonez. I actually have it under 1.5ghz. Like I said, even being stock the battery seems to get really hot. I'm going to purchase a battery and see if that changes anything.
But since I did change my modem as well it seems to keep the phone a little more cool. Just using the phone can get really hot to the touch even with my otter box on it.

Personallyc I think cases only increase the temp, not decrease. Only if it were aluminum or made of some other heat sink type metal will it actually help with dissipating heat.
If the modem helped a little, try flashing the LJC firmware from the dev section. There is a thread there with this firmware in recovery flashable form. Wont affect your current rom or setup.
It could be your battery, but I'm just not so sure it really is. These phones can get hot, that's pretty normal.
Also check in settings on what uses the battery the most. Perhaps a service is getting hung and sticking at full throttle!

So I flash the: OTA_T999_UVDJLA_UVDJLC in the recovery right over the current ROM and I shouldn't have any problems? (Obviously make a back up before flash?)

No, not the OTA. This is the thread I was referring to. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2282603
It is primarily for the MD5 firmware, but the LJC firmware is also available there as well. This is the direct link to the download for LJC: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/173554095/T999 Devel/T999UVDLJC_firmware.zip
Read that thread though so you have a better understanding of what you are flashing. This does include the LJC modem, just so you know.
An as always, yes make a backup, just in case!
I already have the LJC modem flashed. It shouldn't be a problem, I'm assuming? Thanks for your help in giving me the direct links.

Yup, you will be fine. Itll reflash the modem, but its not a big deal.

Flashed this and phone doesn't get crazy hot anymore. And removed the case as well! Thanks!

What's the purpose of zRAM with this phone?

Just wondering why most, if not all kernels for this phone have it enabled by default. I understand why it's there for low end devices with very little RAM but it's truly unnecessary for this phone. I'm sure there's the select few out there that might need it but the vast majority don't. Even on a TW ROM I find it difficult to for the RAM into an oom situation, not even a lowmem one. Given the way Android handles memory now it should be difficult.
It's a horrible virus. Setup correctly it may not effect battery life and performance too much but it does nevertheless, and for what? Maybe I'm just being unreasonable but it should honestly be taken out of our kernels or disabled. Not saying it's difficult to click and button to turn it off. It's just a small, dumb thing that gets to me. There seems to be a but of renewed hype over it with the monitoring apps for it and posts about tweaking it. And why the switch to "zRAM" from compcache? Its like calling a Honda an Acura - same difference but with an H made to look like an A and a higher price tag.
Any input on this? Maybe I'm missing something...

Well, logically speaking, zRAM is simply a fallback. Yes, we have enough space and RAM on the newer phones to technically not need it. But for those ... yeah, nevermind I agree with your sentiments. lol Isn't KK shipped with zRAM enabled as well?
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I think so. Maybe they have a plan and this is step one. A zRAM conspiracy? Lol
I guess it could be there for low end/older devices. Google did state that KK should be able to be ran on those devices and they would definitely need compcache.

Haha, leave no phone left behind. How beautiful! I almost shed a tear.
But yes, you are absolutely on the mark. A plethora of devices will be running the newer releases and a few are not well equipped. That's where zram kicks in.

Anyone use Google Now?

Just wondering if anyone here with a G3 is running Google now on their phones. If so, how is the battery life impact for you? Is there a noticeable difference in battery life compared to not using it?
Posted from my LG-D850
I have used it since it was created. I've never noticed any real difference without it. S5 and g2 both had exceptional battery life with it. The g3 doesn't have good battery regardless of what I do, so I don't know.

Every day, its the greatest thing ever and no that's not sarcastic. Is very useful especially when you enable it from any screen. It has all of my important things in one place and I can set reminders by voice that sync to my chrome on my PC. That way I can't forget anything.

Five Hours Battery Life?

It seems my N7 2013 is getting around 5 - 6 hours of battery life. Furthermore, sometimes it takes a really long time to charge.
I'm a heavy user and I bought this as a refurb a few years ago. Do I need to change out the battery? Is it a difficult and expensive operation?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app
Yes if you are running stock (or a stable custom ROM) and getting that battery life if is time to get a new one. Good news is they are under $20 and really easy to install. Go on ifixit and use their guides.
Do you suggest getting one from eBay?

Before replacing the battery, consider a power bank like http://www.mi.com/en/pb5000/ to extend battery life.
I upgraded to Marshmallow and did a factory reset. Everything seems okay now.

N Final < Preview

Been running dev preview and now I got the full meal deal, but I swear battery life is worse an phone lags more. Anyone else have this experience?
I haven't noticed it on my 5X.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Not at all. Phone runs better for me. Maybe you should try doing a factory reset.

That's the plan once I have time. Might just be in my head if no one else has noticed!

Factory reset and give it a few battery cycles.
Maybe that's why the factory images still aren't available. Maybe Google discovered some issues. Technically anyone running N should still be in the beta program.

Always try a factory reset before assuming the worst.
