I have an issue with my phone overheating. Meaning my battery gets ridiculously hot. Its hot the the touch especially during use of my data or heavy use in general. I know it's not a ROM issue nor is it a kernel issue. Why? Because I have gone back to stock and it actually gets hotter.
Would simply replacing the battery with another OEM battery fix this issue? Or can it simply be the hardware? Or could it both? Would it be worth a shot to replace just the battery? I wish I took the time to take it into T-Mobile when I first bought the phone, but I assumed it was because it was stock. (Dumb decision, I know). Any insight would be appreciated.

get a battery and phone temp app and report how hot it actually gets. Maybe get a case if its not abnormal type of hot. I live in Phoenix AZ and it gets up to 118° here and I'm outside using my phone mostly if in shade and I've seen my phone get to 124° granted it wasn't good and I wish that didn't happen, no harm was done.

KTweaker app shows the phone heating up to 56*C so that was my main concern. What app do you use?

That really high if you aren't effected by sun light and external heat. Maybe get a new battery. Amazon has em cheap.

Judging from past experience, are you shore it is the battery? It is actually extremely common for the phones proccessor to react differently to different roms and heap up which will cause the entire back of your phone to be hot to the touch. The proccessor is located right below the battery compartment. If this is the case I would first try flashing a different kernal and also check to see if your proccessor is overclocked and perhaps lowering the maximum mhz. Usually around 1096 is a pretty good low speed that will still keep your phone fast in my oppinion. See if that helps you. If it is the battery, the only real cause might be a defective battery in which I would stop using immediately since it may cause damage to your phone.

I've tried different kernels and the best kernel that works for me is Ktoonez. I actually have it under 1.5ghz. Like I said, even being stock the battery seems to get really hot. I'm going to purchase a battery and see if that changes anything.
But since I did change my modem as well it seems to keep the phone a little more cool. Just using the phone can get really hot to the touch even with my otter box on it.

Personallyc I think cases only increase the temp, not decrease. Only if it were aluminum or made of some other heat sink type metal will it actually help with dissipating heat.
If the modem helped a little, try flashing the LJC firmware from the dev section. There is a thread there with this firmware in recovery flashable form. Wont affect your current rom or setup.
It could be your battery, but I'm just not so sure it really is. These phones can get hot, that's pretty normal.
Also check in settings on what uses the battery the most. Perhaps a service is getting hung and sticking at full throttle!

So I flash the: OTA_T999_UVDJLA_UVDJLC in the recovery right over the current ROM and I shouldn't have any problems? (Obviously make a back up before flash?)

No, not the OTA. This is the thread I was referring to. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2282603
It is primarily for the MD5 firmware, but the LJC firmware is also available there as well. This is the direct link to the download for LJC: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/173554095/T999 Devel/T999UVDLJC_firmware.zip
Read that thread though so you have a better understanding of what you are flashing. This does include the LJC modem, just so you know.
An as always, yes make a backup, just in case!
I already have the LJC modem flashed. It shouldn't be a problem, I'm assuming? Thanks for your help in giving me the direct links.

Do you have an app that tells you your device temp. It could be normal, but it's hard knowing if you don't know the actual temp.
I've noticed when using the radio vs WiFi, my device runs warmer. High 80's, sometimes higher if I'm running it a lot. WiFi always seems to run cooler.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
As long is it is not burning your hand, then it's perfectly fine. Most phones tend to warm up during use. You can perhaps try a different kernel if you are rooted and undervolt, some people claim it helps. If not then don't even stress unless it hurts to hold the phone.

Hey guys wondering if anyone else had this issue? Got the Galaxy S3 and its runs pretty hot. Not like the whole phone but like half of it mostly where the home button is but in the back.
Don't know what it is. Wanted to know if anyone else was experiencing this or if its kernel related/ROM related.
I've tried switching ROMs, Kernels, Governors, Schedulers and still nothing. Also undervolting and underclocking. Right now I'm running Casper's AOKP build 9/20 and its running beautifullyt except for this heating issue.
Let's see if anyone else is having the same as me or can offer help.

I'm running stock, rooted, stock kernel. It heats up when I'm gaming or doing something CPU intensive. Never had a problem because of it though. I've seen other threads where this is pretty much considered normal.
I mean I had a GNex before this and it did used to get warm in the back when I used to surf the web or use the phone but once I rooted and changed kernels, undervolted and underclocked, I could do anything and it wouldn't get hot.
Since I'm fairly new to the GS3 I just figured I post it on here just to see if this was how the phone ran typically

The GS3 does get hot when it's working hard. That's why people are suggesting a list of what apps show up on your battery list. How is your battery life? If you provide a screengrab of the battery screen that shows the apps and the activity it could give the folks here some information. It's most likely an app that keeps the phone awake and running at full power.
Agreed a screen grab would be excellent, I just found an app that was draining my evo4g from full to absolute zero it was ridiculous especially with a 3500 battery on board. Still waiting for my S3 in the mail, but steal my friends to mess around with when I can 'b

It's there any way to disable this? I am on stock ZVB rooted with I.A. installed. My phone will shutdown due to temp constantly, especially now that the weather is getting nice out. This is getting to the point of being a deal breaker with this phone. Will a custom ROM help? I love this phone but this is getting to be unacceptable...

Never heard of such a thing. Try a kernel mod app like Fauxclock or Tricksters mod. Might make all the difference. I swear by Faux's myselff, and have great performance, battery life and no added heat.
There is but it's not recommended. The phone shuts off in order to try and make sure the heat does not damage the hardware permanently. If you're phone is shutting down that often due to heat then it sounds like you need to get it replaced. I've never had it shut down due to over heating, even after hours of playing a graphic intense game with the screen at max brightness and charging..

Yep, it was just heating up pretty bad compared to me OG evo. I flashed over to CM10 to try it, so far it hasnt really heated up. Only when playing the games, i just wish we could get this stupid camera issue fixed. That makes me want to go back to Lifeless.
check out spleefs AOKP rom, my temps have gone down significantly from the stock rom which would get hot AF
Mines cool with stock but with aosp its hot AF
It's a glass phone with a quad core processor i think you can figure the rest out.

This issue seems to vary from person to person there seems to be no "fix-all" solution. Personally the only time my phone's ever gotten absurdly hot for no reason was when I ran the first build of Cyanogenmod for this device. On stock it took some nasty 108 °F weather to make my phone boil. By now though my phone always stays reasonably cool AOSP or not. You can try changing governors or whatnot with a non-stock kernel or maybe even try eco mode if it isn't already on. That's all I can think of.

I've noticed that only Stock ROM's have this problem. When I go from Stock to CM, I notice the change of temp right away and vise versa. I get the worst heat from charging. I have a 2.1A home charger and charges the phone quick on CM but with Stock it heats up to almost 130F and doesn't charge at all. There is something wrong with Stock. (I tried Lifeless, VectuS, & nexOGen).
