Hey guys wondering if anyone else had this issue? Got the Galaxy S3 and its runs pretty hot. Not like the whole phone but like half of it mostly where the home button is but in the back.
Don't know what it is. Wanted to know if anyone else was experiencing this or if its kernel related/ROM related.
I've tried switching ROMs, Kernels, Governors, Schedulers and still nothing. Also undervolting and underclocking. Right now I'm running Casper's AOKP build 9/20 and its running beautifullyt except for this heating issue.
Let's see if anyone else is having the same as me or can offer help.

I'm running stock, rooted, stock kernel. It heats up when I'm gaming or doing something CPU intensive. Never had a problem because of it though. I've seen other threads where this is pretty much considered normal.
I mean I had a GNex before this and it did used to get warm in the back when I used to surf the web or use the phone but once I rooted and changed kernels, undervolted and underclocked, I could do anything and it wouldn't get hot.
Since I'm fairly new to the GS3 I just figured I post it on here just to see if this was how the phone ran typically

If I have the hot spot on, and I am using it quite a bit, it will get quite warm. Usually up into the mid 40's.
Yeah so I'm guessing I'm not the only one lol that's good. Hopefully a kernel or something can make this go away. If not I'm getting a case
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I can confirm that using the lean kernel did help a bit. Still gets hot though....time to get a new case

Im over clocked ktoonsez kernel, and never had that issue. Only while 3d gaming does it normally get hot or during benchmarking.

For me the only time my gs3 got hot was when i first got the phone and it was restoring all the apps from the market and when playing gta 3 other then that my phone doesnt heat up. When surfing internet it doesnt get hot but just a little warm. I do use a tpu case
Like its weird. When I'm not using the phone is perfectly fine. When I text or sometimes use WiFi its fine. And also when my battery is like under 30% its fine. But other times like when its full, it gets really hot. I'm using lean kernel ATM.

Like with my phone as I type im full battery right now, and its cool as freon. And im over clocked. If your still under warranty then why dont you swap it out if its that hot. Otherwise I wouldnt worry about it too much.

Alright I'm back to report. I'm still on AOKP running Ktoonz Kernel and no undervolting or over clocking. Its at 1.3 and 540 MHz and its running fine without getting too hot.
BIT I have to add I took my SD card OUT. Yes I noticed that the phone was getting hot where the sd was located so I took it out. Idk if its just me but this helped a lot. Its not running as hot as it used to be.
Anyone want to test that out as well? Would be helpful. Thanks

that would kinda make sense because when i use the adapter on the micro sd and put that in the computer and put some roms and some videos on it id say maybe 10 min to do all that. and then when i retrieve and go to put in the phone its really hot. so it could have something to do with that
Yeah I'm not sure. I mean its still hot I'm not going to lie bit its not as hot as it used to be. When I had it in there it was like burning hot now its just warm.
I wonder what it is really...

I just added a data plan , I was using the phone exclusively on WiFi,I noticed the device gets real warm when using the phone when the mobile data is on(by using the phone I mean, surfing web, streaming music and GPS navigation)
Is that a common problem, or it's just with my device, that I should seek help for?
Btw,I upgraded to ics through kies last month....

Do you have an app that tells you your device temp. It could be normal, but it's hard knowing if you don't know the actual temp.
I've noticed when using the radio vs WiFi, my device runs warmer. High 80's, sometimes higher if I'm running it a lot. WiFi always seems to run cooler.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
As long is it is not burning your hand, then it's perfectly fine. Most phones tend to warm up during use. You can perhaps try a different kernel if you are rooted and undervolt, some people claim it helps. If not then don't even stress unless it hurts to hold the phone.

Thank you guys,I just downloaded a battery indicator app which shows the temperature, and I'm gonna keep an eye on it,
I've heard that temp should not exceed 130

120°F / 51° C seems very hot to me. My Gnex is on 84°F / 29°C. Even after playing high performance games it doesn´t heat up more than to 111°F / 44°C
What Rom / Kernel / Build are you running?
I'm running the latest Vicious/CM10 w/latest Franco but I've tried several other ROMs...none of my other gnex's ran this hot...it will go up to 160 with the slightest task to the point where it is uncomfortable to touch on the upper part of the screen.

maybe try the paranaoid android rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1619582. there are a few reports about overheating with the stock CM10 kernel, but works perfectly for me. solutions there are switching to trinity kernel or franco as well. but mainly the overheating shoult result from a bad kernel.
If you don´t want to put on another rom, maybe switch back to an older / stable version of francos.
I don't think it is a kernel issue because I just got this replacement...(have had 6 gnex's...long story) was running the exact setup...never had any heat issues until this one. Even when it was bone stock I noticed the upper part of the screen was hot to the touch.

then give back to your reseller. sounds like a factory problem then. phone shouldn´t heat up this much. not even it´s uncortable it may crash your phone (or parts of it) in the long run.
That's what I was thinking unfortunately...on to gnex number 7 I guess
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
yeah unfortunately maufacturing standarts for the GNex are way below than these for samsungs own devices. but better exchange it now then beeing said it´s your fold if the cpu melts or something
Ya that's too bad...calling Verizon first thing in the morning thanks.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
i feel like you two don't know what you are talking about and idk wtf you are doing to your phone that you've had to return 6 of them? derp but, that's besides the point
now the issue at hand, i've had over heating since jelly bean on custom roms which has shut my phone down ... it seems to be a kernel issue as far as i can tell ... i'd recommend trinity's TNP1344-307-JB-STABLE35 http://goo.gl/jry8c
if the problem persists go back to stock ... and quit sending your phones back you are the reason why carriers don't want people to unlock their bootloaders
50°c is normal operating temp, the gnex has a thermal throttle that kicks in at around 75°c, then it scales down the cpu. You also have to consider the ambient temperature outside. Its 95°- 100°f here during the day, of course your phone will run a little hotter when its hot outside. Just use your phone
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Just dip ya phone in water, that should stop it getting to hot :cyclops:
Most of the phones I sent back I did not modify at all...asurion sent me 5 defective devices that all had hardware issues...(faulty screen, broken buttons, no radio, DOA, etc...probably refurbs), they then reimbursed me for buying a new phone through Verizon and it does not have any of those issues. I tried Trinity and it is running slightly cooler now. As for me not knowing what I'm talking about, that is why I asked in the first place. I didn't know what the average running temp. is.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Just flash back to stock and see if you still have the overheating. If nothing changes you have a defective phone. I don't think my gnex has ever reached 120° F even with some mild overclocking and heavy use.
OK so I know pie devices get relatively hot, but when just having my screen on and typing on here or using root explorer it goes up to some 90 degrees. And it just concerns me because my galaxy s2 hardly guys 90 even while playing intensive games.
I'm just curious if 90 is normal or if I should get a new device through warranty.
Thanks everyone.

When I was using SetCPU, I saw mine hovered between 80-90 most of the time. If it is bothering your hand, put a case on it. I use an Otterbox Defender and I can feel the heat through the case sometimes.

In my experience this generally hapoens either after a new rom flash or just at random (seemingly). But it has always eventually calmed down and stays cool after that.
I suspect it is searching for mor something....like updating libraries of songs and whatnot. Seems like it occasionally gets stuck and when you add additional load it easilyy heats up. Try using Show CPU Use in dev options and keep an eye on the top few processes while it heats up. May give you an idea as to the real cause.

It's there any way to disable this? I am on stock ZVB rooted with I.A. installed. My phone will shutdown due to temp constantly, especially now that the weather is getting nice out. This is getting to the point of being a deal breaker with this phone. Will a custom ROM help? I love this phone but this is getting to be unacceptable...

Never heard of such a thing. Try a kernel mod app like Fauxclock or Tricksters mod. Might make all the difference. I swear by Faux's myselff, and have great performance, battery life and no added heat.
There is but it's not recommended. The phone shuts off in order to try and make sure the heat does not damage the hardware permanently. If you're phone is shutting down that often due to heat then it sounds like you need to get it replaced. I've never had it shut down due to over heating, even after hours of playing a graphic intense game with the screen at max brightness and charging..

Thanks for the info. Glad to hear that you can play games/charge/etc.. cuz I couldn't even play Ingress and have BT enabled for more than a few min if it was above room temp outside.

Yep, it was just heating up pretty bad compared to me OG evo. I flashed over to CM10 to try it, so far it hasnt really heated up. Only when playing the games, i just wish we could get this stupid camera issue fixed. That makes me want to go back to Lifeless.
check out spleefs AOKP rom, my temps have gone down significantly from the stock rom which would get hot AF
Mines cool with stock but with aosp its hot AF
It's a glass phone with a quad core processor i think you can figure the rest out.

True
This issue seems to vary from person to person there seems to be no "fix-all" solution. Personally the only time my phone's ever gotten absurdly hot for no reason was when I ran the first build of Cyanogenmod for this device. On stock it took some nasty 108 °F weather to make my phone boil. By now though my phone always stays reasonably cool AOSP or not. You can try changing governors or whatnot with a non-stock kernel or maybe even try eco mode if it isn't already on. That's all I can think of.

Mine's been getting really high temps too, even while just browsing the internet!
At some point while I was flashing a rom, it crashed and gave me a soft brick.
It was hell to remove the back and now I even accidentally detached the connector that hooks up with the battery!
I can still charge it (sorta) but my battery is all glitchy.
I'm gonna try switching to aosp.

My phone reaches 120f when playing game but averages 90-100f, its fine
I've noticed that only Stock ROM's have this problem. When I go from Stock to CM, I notice the change of temp right away and vise versa. I get the worst heat from charging. I have a 2.1A home charger and charges the phone quick on CM but with Stock it heats up to almost 130F and doesn't charge at all. There is something wrong with Stock. (I tried Lifeless, VectuS, & nexOGen).
