Phone over heating while being used on the mobile data - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I just added a data plan , I was using the phone exclusively on WiFi,I noticed the device gets real warm when using the phone when the mobile data is on(by using the phone I mean, surfing web, streaming music and GPS navigation)
Is that a common problem, or it's just with my device, that I should seek help for?
Btw,I upgraded to ics through kies last month....

Do you have an app that tells you your device temp. It could be normal, but it's hard knowing if you don't know the actual temp.
I've noticed when using the radio vs WiFi, my device runs warmer. High 80's, sometimes higher if I'm running it a lot. WiFi always seems to run cooler.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2

As long is it is not burning your hand, then it's perfectly fine. Most phones tend to warm up during use. You can perhaps try a different kernel if you are rooted and undervolt, some people claim it helps. If not then don't even stress unless it hurts to hold the phone.

Thank you guys,I just downloaded a battery indicator app which shows the temperature, and I'm gonna keep an eye on it,
I've heard that temp should not exceed 130

How hot does your S3 get?

When I'm on mobile data with GPS running, I noticed the bottom of half of my S3 getting pretty damn warm. Is this normal?

Are you guys all running stock kernel and ROM or custom? I'm on stock.
Ha! Try hours with GPS, Bluetooth music and Tethering on... the heat seems to really hit while I'm charging and doing all that. Fact! I can't touch the ass end of the phone. It probably gets about 8 hours a week like that. Still working perfectly. Samsung tells me it's normal. It also has a lot of factors for me too. I use a 1 amp charger. After 96% it's not so bad. At night when brightness is down. Not as hot. I tried to get it to mess up but couldn't. GPS, Bluetooth, tethering, charging from 30% and 100% display, and I pushed out to a low coverage area. Didn't miss a beat or melt. Lol.

Navigation makes phones really hot, but with normal usage it should stay within 30-36°C.
I like this phone's heat management more than my old phone. My Evo 3d would get hot from 10 min usage.
On this, my screen has been on for 2 hours straight and I'm running at a cool 35.1 °C.

When I was running CM10 for a day or two I thought my phone would melt but it was also 90+ degrees outside so it was hard to tell. My phone gets a little warm, but nothing too worrying.

It actually shouldn't be expected. The Snapdragon S3's also ran at 1.5ghz and was pleasantly cool and the Exynos on the Galaxy Note was at 1.4ghz. Both are less power efficient and should run hotter than the S4. I've used the Evo LTE for a while with the same S4 and it barely got warm on a hot day. The issue is with the second core being weird. For those that hasn't already, make sure you flash Freeza's fix, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1790061 . This fix made my phone cool and got rid of my quickly draining battery life.
Most of the time my phone will stay within "normal" (to me) range, but when I game heavily... it turns into an oven range! I've gotten so paranoid a few times, I took the battery out and let it cooled for 5-10min
Im having the same problem....it isnt the software thats causing this its the hardware
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
I hope you guys will repsond to this... What do you consider to be "normal" temperature for your phone to reach? Is 35 degrees realy normal? Ive heard people with s3 talk of theirs only reaching temperatures of 29 degrees max.
Thanks.

Why does cell standby drain my batter?

So I don't use my phone while I'm working or if I'm in class. When I'm in class I have just Pandora going but otherwise its nothing else. Cell standby uses 82% of my batter....

I had this problem while in training last year for my current job. The training room was a dead zone and the phone was working overtime to try to find a signal.
If you weren't relying on Pandora, I'd just recommend Flight Mode. Worked a treat for me. Maybe just try setting it to not use 4G while you're in class and see if that helps.
Nowadays, I have a 64GB SDXC card with about half of it loaded with music. Don't need TuneIn Radio (or other streaming options) unless there's a specific musical itch my collection just won't scratch.
Also, getting ICS on the 'unbreakable' AT&T phone was far easier than it sounded when just reading about it. Have a look at the various threads and just remember that 'Step 1.bat' won't tell you that it's succeeded. XD
EDIT: You know, I was just looking at that screenshot... 8 hours on the battery, and it's barely dipped at all, judging from the graph on top. '81%' just means that 81% of the drain was due to Cell Standby.
Yea it looks to me like your getting some good up time there. One thing I noticed with Pandora is the adds will cause a heck of a drain on battery and chews up quite a bit of data as well. I personally use a add blocker from the market and a app manager to keep stuff optimized. I also use a add free Pandora I found here on XDA but mainly for data reasons since I only have 3gb.
LTE can drain battery pretty good. Mine isn't as drastic as yours though.

Phone Gets Real Hot

Hey guys wondering if anyone else had this issue? Got the Galaxy S3 and its runs pretty hot. Not like the whole phone but like half of it mostly where the home button is but in the back.
Don't know what it is. Wanted to know if anyone else was experiencing this or if its kernel related/ROM related.
I've tried switching ROMs, Kernels, Governors, Schedulers and still nothing. Also undervolting and underclocking. Right now I'm running Casper's AOKP build 9/20 and its running beautifullyt except for this heating issue.
Let's see if anyone else is having the same as me or can offer help.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I'm running stock, rooted, stock kernel. It heats up when I'm gaming or doing something CPU intensive. Never had a problem because of it though. I've seen other threads where this is pretty much considered normal.
I mean I had a GNex before this and it did used to get warm in the back when I used to surf the web or use the phone but once I rooted and changed kernels, undervolted and underclocked, I could do anything and it wouldn't get hot.
Since I'm fairly new to the GS3 I just figured I post it on here just to see if this was how the phone ran typically

If I have the hot spot on, and I am using it quite a bit, it will get quite warm. Usually up into the mid 40's.
Yeah so I'm guessing I'm not the only one lol that's good. Hopefully a kernel or something can make this go away. If not I'm getting a case

For me the only time my gs3 got hot was when i first got the phone and it was restoring all the apps from the market and when playing gta 3 other then that my phone doesnt heat up. When surfing internet it doesnt get hot but just a little warm. I do use a tpu case
Like its weird. When I'm not using the phone is perfectly fine. When I text or sometimes use WiFi its fine. And also when my battery is like under 30% its fine. But other times like when its full, it gets really hot. I'm using lean kernel ATM.

BIT I have to add I took my SD card OUT. Yes I noticed that the phone was getting hot where the sd was located so I took it out. Idk if its just me but this helped a lot. Its not running as hot as it used to be.
Anyone want to test that out as well? Would be helpful. Thanks

that would kinda make sense because when i use the adapter on the micro sd and put that in the computer and put some roms and some videos on it id say maybe 10 min to do all that. and then when i retrieve and go to put in the phone its really hot. so it could have something to do with that

OK so I know pie devices get relatively hot, but when just having my screen on and typing on here or using root explorer it goes up to some 90 degrees. And it just concerns me because my galaxy s2 hardly guys 90 even while playing intensive games.
I'm just curious if 90 is normal or if I should get a new device through warranty.

In my experience this generally hapoens either after a new rom flash or just at random (seemingly). But it has always eventually calmed down and stays cool after that.
I suspect it is searching for mor something....like updating libraries of songs and whatnot. Seems like it occasionally gets stuck and when you add additional load it easilyy heats up. Try using Show CPU Use in dev options and keep an eye on the top few processes while it heats up. May give you an idea as to the real cause.

Is it possible to bypass the auto shutdown due to temp?

It's there any way to disable this? I am on stock ZVB rooted with I.A. installed. My phone will shutdown due to temp constantly, especially now that the weather is getting nice out. This is getting to the point of being a deal breaker with this phone. Will a custom ROM help? I love this phone but this is getting to be unacceptable...
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
Never heard of such a thing. Try a kernel mod app like Fauxclock or Tricksters mod. Might make all the difference. I swear by Faux's myselff, and have great performance, battery life and no added heat.
There is but it's not recommended. The phone shuts off in order to try and make sure the heat does not damage the hardware permanently. If you're phone is shutting down that often due to heat then it sounds like you need to get it replaced. I've never had it shut down due to over heating, even after hours of playing a graphic intense game with the screen at max brightness and charging..

Thanks for the info. Glad to hear that you can play games/charge/etc.. cuz I couldn't even play Ingress and have BT enabled for more than a few min if it was above room temp outside.
