It suddenly occurred to me that the main reason HTC has locked our handsets is that they don't want to deal with bogus warranty claims and the labor costs thereof. You unlock your G2's NAND, you fry your handset by overclocking too high or doing something else stupid to brick it, and then say "HURR DURR I DUNNO HOW IT GOT THAT WAY." Then they have to expend resources to determine whether or not you screwed it up.
So, what if we paid them in advance for that labor? What if we sent in our handset to have it factory un-write-protected for, say, $20-$50? Would you agree to this kind of deal?
Hell no.

Hell no all phones that I pay full price for should come completely unlocked. Let's face it these new phones are full blown computers these days. You would expect to buy a computer and have to pay extra for the right to add or delete software would you? The only way I would expect this would be if you got special pricing with a contract stateing that you are not allowed to do such things.

"Should" and "will" are two very different things. HTC incurs much more risk with a handset than Toshiba or Dell do with a computer -- for one thing, you can't "brick" a computer. The recovery process with a computer is significantly more standardized and easy to perform than on a smartphone. Computers don't include cellular hardware that is a jealously guarded secret from the user, that has to be accessed with binary blob drivers, that can become irreversibly software-busted if you screw up a software update.
Should there be a standardized cell phone recovery/imaging system so that it's not possible to brick ANY cell phone that uses it? Absolutely. Go develop it. No manufacturer will use it. It's not in their financial interests to do so.
If, however, enough people were to make it clear to a company like HTC that we as hobbyists were willing to incur risk and sign away our right to demand that HTC fix our mistakes... something might start to get through the cracks.
This of course ignores the fact that manufacturers and carriers like to be able to put crapware on our phones that we can't remove... but it's a start.
I think it's a fair question because so many people tool around, brick their phones and try to get a free replacement somehow. So, I'm not mad at these companies for locking their stuff down. I would not pay extra, but I would jump ship to any company that offers an unlocked phone. I think that would send the best message.

no i wouldnt pay but i would allow them to black list my imei in trade for them unlocking the nand.
Now for the people that dont understand what im saying. I am saying that HTC should make a software for unlocking the nand but before it unlocks it reads your imei and sends it to them so they know who unlocked and who didnt
I already paid them right? Why would I have to do it again. Maybe it should be the other way around and you can buy a nand locked phone for extra $$. But let say for a lower cost than insurance?

Yes I agree however I blame the people who don't read instructions and try to turn in they're phone. Just pay for insurance and pay the full deductable or don't try changing anything. But that's just a pipe dream. Too many people just don't read enough before doing stuff.

I would rather have this as well. I already paid for the phone. It is mine. If they are worried about me making bogus warranty claims, then I should be able to opt-out and get full access to my device in return.
The imei number idea I kind of like. Instead of 'blacklisting', let me sign a release of liability where I register my serial number and by doing so waiver any liability from that point on

hell no, we won't go! Hell no, we won't go!! Hell no, we won't go!!! Hell no, we won't go!!!!
So when your phone legitimately fails due to a hardware issue you can pay full price for a new one? Why would anyone opt for this? That's not even legally feasible. It would violate lemon laws all over the place.
I would be willing to up to $40 so long as there were guaranteed to be tons of ROMS, themes, recovery options, etc... I want my G1 development back!
Only because I'm inpatient however, and sick of waiting for full root and custom recovery. Basically anyone who pledged in the fun money for dev's thread would be saying yes.

That is precisely what we do when we agree to "root/unlock" our phones. Essentially voiding our warranty, people who do it accept and understand the risks. HTC, make a legal agreement and we'll all accept it in return you let us Nand unlock!!!
Thanks.

Ya, if I didn't pay full price for the phone. Nand locked=discounted price, nand unlocked=full price-- warranty includes movable parts only

I'd bet fewer than 10% of users root their phones, figure a 10% brick rate among those people and that's 1%. Now ask yourself what percentage of people phisically break their phones? Having said that, one thing is controllable the other isn't .
BTW....HELL NO!!!
here is the story.
i bought my t-mobile galaxy S3 like 2 months ago when it first came out. i was really impress with this piece of hardware. So when the first root method and new ROM popping up i was flashing everyone of them. i had no problem with my phone at all. Then about 34 days later i had a bad flash and discover i lost my IMEI and hoping for a fix. Then a fix came out by Peoplearmy and Geek. i tried these two methods but none of them work for me. I didn't try to return it because i bought it off contract for a full price and its way pass the 14days return policy. so i was stuck on edge for a month.
But last week i went back to the T-mobile store and try to purchase a new Galaxy S3. The T-mobile rep. realize that i am already using the galaxy s3 and ask why the heck do i need a new one. So i give them my phone. The first thing they do was looking for water damage and of course there is none. Then they realize the phone doesn't have 4G anymore. She was really confuse. Then she took like 10min trying to fix it. Of course she can't fix it because i'm the one that really know what going on with it. So i tell her that i just go ahead and buy another one. But she is a true angel. The Rep. told me that since most high end T-mobile phone got the "premium handset protection" i can get a replacement for free if the phone wasn't have any water damage, in other words "if i didn't crew it up myself".And i didn't =). So she put in an order for me free of charge and 2 days later the shipping came and i just replace the good phone and ship back the old one with no additional cost because they send me a prepaid shipping label how awesome is that. I felt like the luckiest guy in the world.
But before you turn in your phone you need use "Triangle away" application by "chainfire" to reset the custom binary counts. When you flash an unofficial rom or kernel you will see the custom binary counts in a number depend on how many times you flash it. you can find out the exact number on the Dowload Mode. That how they figure out if you did something with your phone. so when you use Triangle away to reset it, it will say custom binary from a number to "NO". After you did that just Odin back to stock and BAM!!! they can't tell if you ever ROOT it.
So i have a new phone with a new working IMEI and now i'm just chilling with the stock rom for now.
i hope this will help some people that lost their IMEI and trying to return it with an expired refund or return policy.
my advice to you is when you try to return your phone. just play dumb and don't know what they talks about. all you know is your phone don't have 4G connection. good luck
So you had the insurance?

For now it looks like flashing custom recovery triggers the Knox counter and voids the warranty. But some ppl in a S4 forum say that they managed to flash without the trigger. Good read here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447832
But like others and the Tmobile guy who sold me the know said, instore staff don't know how to check for it. But there could be a "yet" added at the end. All they need is some training to go into download mode and look at the counter. Not hard. It just depends on how much it's worth to Tmobile. The $10 per month for Jump and regular service fees are how they make their money. They most likely will overlook voids just to keep that funding stream going.
yes but as long as they see it boot they wont be able to tell the difference
Afaik it does not void any waranties with jump. If you are concerned just flash back to stock before taking into the store. Here is the disclaimer straight from tmobile. Nothing is said about root or knox.
Deductible or processing fee will apply if traded-in device is lost/stolen, not in good working order, does not power on, or has liquid damage or broken screen; up to two Premium Handset Protection claims in a 12 month period.

I'm a retail sales assosiate at a tmoible corporate store and when we do jump ugrades they have to pass a three point inspection (Water damage, Cracked Screen, Functioning device) We do not check Knox being voided during a jump ugrade. That being said when we ship the devices off we ship them to assurant which is the insurance company that handles the jump upgrades and they well could boot the phones into download mode to see if knox has been tripped. I cant say for certain that they do or do not. If they do check for it you technically would be responible at that point for the full cost of the device. I myself own a note that is rooted and knox is triggered so I'm not going to risk using my jump upgade on my phone. But it's up to you to take the risk.
..... Un trip KNOX... Pick them up. .. duh

Even if they did notice you can also call 611 and make up something about your phone not working properly and they should send you a replacement, then you can just use the stock phone to trade in with the JUMP program. I friend of mine did that, no questions asked.

U can male a claim or jump to a different phone, don't matter, people have returned them rooted also.
I always Odin to stock, then return the phone with no issues at all.
So....
In September I bought a month old used HTC One from someone on CG. Phone has been rock solid. No real issues, but I always had people on the other end complaining they could not hear me well.
Recently people on the other end cannot hear me at all, just static and only through the handset, works via bt and speakerphone. Thinking it was the RIL issue, I got a new SIM and nothing, restored to stock and wiped using factory recovery as @santod040 suggested and nothing. So I did what I would always do, relock the device, put it back to S-ON.
Well at this point I don't care, the HTC One has been on the VZW network less than a year. Who cares where I bought it from it should be under warranty. Well I guess Verizon is not ATT and HTC is not Apple. I said nothing, simply phone is unusable, already did all the stuff like factory resets and the such. Put in a warranty claim and done. Have done it before on VZW. They text me this morning that the phone is not under warranty because its a customer supplied device. I call and *****., they do not take. Tell me take it up with HTC. HTC turns and says its a software issue and it is known. We are working on an update. If you want a replacement talk to your carrier.
Call Verizon back and nothing. At this point I am livid. Does anyone know if there is anything else I can do? Honestly, my contract is up in 11 days and i have been contemplating leaving vzw for a while... maybe this is just the nail in the coffin...
Any suggestions appreciated. As an fyi, i found a couple of threads on the ATT side of the one where ATT did honor the warranty. F$#%ing verizon.... Rocking my old GNex in the meantime.

Have you tried to get a square trade warranty? Its something to look at when buying used phones. Verizon won't honor warranty on your phone since you did not get it through them. HTC should be the one that should replace your faulty device with a refurbished model. I would call back HTC and ask that you speak to a supervisor.
My Verizon store always has been friendly when I walked in with a new phone and needed it activated to replace the old one. The device usually has a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer.
HTC is the one who needs to replace the phone. You didn't buy it from VZW so they are playing their games. You are correct, HTC customer service is awful compared to Apple. All I can suggest is call HTC and explain that you can't wait for an update, you need your phone replaced now since it's less than a year old and still under warranty.

Verizon is just too big to care, they would be happy to get him on the edge plan and subsidize him another phone. If you do not have unlimited data through Verizon I would just look to get this fixed as soon as possible and probably switch. Only reason I still am with them, without a contract is because I was grandfathered into the unlimited data.

FYI for future reference, I usually buy a phone on a credit card like American Express because they give you one extra year warranty and if there are any issues (like the one you mentioned), then they give you a full refund on the original purchase price. Like what other people said, try using the after market warranty...that will be your best bet at this point.

Just to clarify something....did you run the ruu? I see return to stock but not ruu specifically.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
I swear, this is the exact post I would have wrote about a month ago. Out of the blue, I got a call and the person on the other end couldn't hear me very well, but the speaker phone worked fine. I also purchased mine used, so knew the warranty risks going in.
First, I took some canned air and blew out the little hole at the bottom of the phone, and into the speaker grills. I'm sure that you need to be careful doing this to avoid breaking anything. I also noticed that my speakers sounded like they were blown too, so I used an old trick I've used on other phones that seems to have fixed mine. The blown speaker sound is usually caused my tiny little metal/magnetic particles that accumulate on the speaker. I take a magnet from an old hard drive, and crank up the music and wipe the magnet over the speaker holes for a while, moving in all different directions. The vibrations from the music dislodge the particles, and the magnet picks them up.
So far so good, and I haven't had any issues since.
Good to know that HTC will honor the warranty on a second party phone.

It took forever because of the terrible northeast weather, sent it to them UPS Second Day using my corporate account. They are sending it back Fed Ex Ground. According to the girl, I am getting the same phone with a new Camera and new Microphones. So it was a hardware issue all along.
Hopefully they don't update it past the .15 so I can S-OFF and Unlock the moment I get it.

this is a great reason to keep insurance/extended warranty on your line. Yes you have to pay for it, but 1 call would have gotten you an exchange through verizon.
I dropped my phone a few days ago and thanks to the useless Dot View case, it popped out when it hit the ground and on second impact cracked my screen. I remembered you get one free screen repair so I pulled up my information and my 6 month window literally ends on Saturday! (Talk about timing)
I'm doing the advanced exchange, where they overnight you a new device and you send yours back. From what I read online, it's highly unlikely they'll reject my claim for the bootloader being tampered with, but with $599 on lock down I'd prefer to play it safe.
Is there a way to lock it back down if you're S-On? I tried the free S-Off method but it does not work with my phone all that's not an option.
Let me know please, or share experience if you have done the exchange like how I am and had no issues.
Thanks.

You can't lock it with S-ON, you can "relock" it, but theyll know it was unlocked. It's best to invest in Sunshine for S-OFF to lock and remove tampered banner then S-ON again. It's better to spend $25 for safety rather than take a risk and pay $599

OK, so my question is, if I pay the $25 to S-Off it then S-On after I fix all the other stuff, can they see it has been tampered with still? I definitely don't want to fork over $25 for a one time thing if I still run the risk of being detected.

That's exactly what I thought. The S-Off would just be a waste of money.
I think my best bet is to just re-lock (so it says re-locked), unroot, flash stock ROM and recovery and send it back. They'll probably charge me the $290 without question and I'll have to call and dispute it. From what I read in the General section on here is that quite a lot of people were told they were going to be charged $290 and they had to escalate the situation and eventually (most) everyone ended up getting it fixed for free.
I'm just worried they won't refund it because if they don't, I'm absolutely screwed. I'm just about to hit the 6 month eligibility for T-Mobile JUMP (I'm on the old school jump that you can do every 6 months regardless) and I was worried I'd likely get rejected for JUMP due to the cracked screen which is why I sent it in. I don't plan on keeping it much longer, depending on what comes out soon that I want, so the $29 overnight fee wasn't an issue. I have to use the phone for work so I had to get the phone over nighted to have it ASAP.
I just got warranty service. I returned to stock completely.... But I left it S-OFF. No problem. ?

Did your bootloader read ***UNLOCKED*** when you sent it in?

No, I locked it. It was as it was when I bought it.... Except S-OFF.

Ahhh, gotcha. Hmm. I'd hate to spend $25 for the s-off only to be on the same spot.
Did you use s-off to achieve unlock though? Or did you use HTC Dev like I did?

I did warranty and sent it LOCKED but S-off and it caused a **** storm. They would not budge whatsoever on the $290 charge. Took over 2 weeks to get my phone back after they finally agreed to do a partial repair (meaning screen repairs but motherboard not) so I didn't have to pay the $290 but had to email them explicitly stating that I understand the warranty is now voided and take full responsibility for any problems from here on out

Yeah I saw your post in the general section.
That's what concerns me because I'm getting the new phone first. They'll have my phone so I won't have an option to say give it to me partially repaired.
I'm really not sure what to do.

Did they already send you the replacement? If not maybe call them and ask to cancel that and say you just want to have yours repaired or do the $19 option. This way if they quote you at least they'll tell you before sending you the replacement.

I thought about that but it'll likely be shipped by the morning. I made sure to place my order before the 4pm cut off.
I don't know if paying to get S-Off to lock everything back down is the best option or if they'd just look and see that I used HTC Dev and charge me anyway.
I jumped the gun by not reading up on the topic before deciding on the immediate replacement. I didn't even consider the fact that I unlocked it.

Yeah man I don't want to tell you the wrong thing here. I'd say sending in a phone s-off is a big no no because the guy I spoke to said that's like completely unauthorized software there's no way to argue against it. You might be okay with just the boot loader being relockedd. You could argue that it would void the 1yr warranty but the screen benefit being separate from that because they don't explicitly mention it when you unlock it.

This is more or less what I was thinking initially. Thanks for the tips, that's a good angle to take on it. I wish I had the unlock notice they make you click when you unlock it from HTC Dev so I could see if it mentions the screen replacement benefit.

Well, this could get interesting.
Still hasn't showed shipped so I called, since I paid for over night. I ended up talking to the same girl from yesterday, who was really nice.
She said they are waiting on stock and have been for a few days now. They refunded my $29 overnight fee. I told her that when I had called the second time and spoke with another lady (Nancy) from support, who processed my payment, I had specifically asked if I needed to sign for the package and she says yes. I asked if the package would be here Friday because I'd have to take the day off and she said yes. Now, you're telling me you guys have know for days that it was back ordered yet Nancy tells me it would be in Friday and I'm sitting here missing a day of work for nothing.
She apologized and I told her I was upset because I would now have to miss a second day of work to sign for my package.
When the time comes that they bill me, which I suspect they will, I'm going to use that angle. I just lost out on two days of pay, ~$220, and I'm not about to absorb another $290 to them.
Guess we'll see what happens.

If you aren't going to go the S-Off route, I would at least consider flashing the stock RUU. That would return the device to as close to stock as possible. Might not help, but it can't hurt.
You could always try to make the case that just because they sent you the bootloader unlock code doesn't mean you used it.

I tried to reply earlier but for some reason it kept giving me issues on my phone.
Yeah, that's the plan. Just got off work and I'm downloading the RUU now. Going to **RE-LOCK** the botoloader in a few minutes then RUU back to stock once it's done downloading and see what happens. I THINK it puts the ***UNLOCKED*** status back to ***LOCKED*** if I'm not mistaken. Then I'm just left with the fact that I requested an unlock code from HTC Dev.
Yeah, that didn't work. Flashed RUU but it still says RELOCKED. Hopefully I won't get dinged $300 for a "motherboard replacement".
