update to lollipop yes or no - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello. its been a while since i have updated my phone.
i have z1 compact
build number: 14.4.A.0.108
android: 4.4.4
model: d5503
rooted :yes
using xposed 2.7 experimental.
my phone works fine no issues. is it worth my while to update to lollipop?
if so can i update from this build num to the latest lollipop or do i need to through the various builds from mine?
thanks

Yes, I like it a lot and think it's a big improvement to KK.

No!
Its not easy to use as 4.4..
The battery is draining, and the os is taking more space..

My general rule of thumb was and is: DON'T touch things which work.
I am on the same OS/ROM as you and I don't plan to do any changes.
Too many complains about lolipop.

if there was no battery drop I would say yes, but now i say dont. wait for 5.1

wait 5.1 lad.

Try to w8 for 5.1 I'v also used LP but I revert back to 108 Munjeni because of battery drain and now on 108 everything works great and I'm waiting for 5.1

Don't! Lollipop ruins your battery, now my phone barely last 6 hours and randomly drops to 0 when doing some heavy task. It's becoming more and more common if you read this thread. Just wait till 5.1.1 and wait a few weeks after to see if there are bugs.

Background program handling is much worse in LP. At least for me. Programs now restart instead of picking up where I left them. Could be a memory bug, since the phone tends to restart after about a week of use, and symptoms such as gps stops working appear.
I upgraded without a factory reset, which could play a role.
Battery same as KK for me.
For the OP I would recommend waiting for 5.1 and the first few user reviews before upgrading.

Hello everybody

Lollipop is as good as kitkat for me. Just do a clean install and you will be fine.

Since we never benefit by the most two important things in Lollipop of Camera API2 or 64bit, actually it is just a waste of time for Z1c to upgrade unless you real want to try out new stuffs. And 5.0.2 got memory leak, 5.1.1 should be much better on handling memory but still some leaks there. KK got the best battery for all.

There is no memory leak in Xperia 5.0.2 firmwares. Sony had fixed that before releasing the firmware.

yes and no, there is no memory leak, but the managment is worse. Ppl with 5.1.1 on Z3 are saying the managment os changeable apps got much better and for other devices too.

in my case battery is much better than on KK (about 2,5 days with "normal" use and display-on-time about 3,5 hours)
Why?
I disabled a lot of services, debloated the ROM and use Greenify, AppOps and a firewall.
And also important: i always close all recent apps before turning off the display
Which ROM?
look at my sig
p.s. photo quality is also worlds better

the worst action i took was uograding my phone to lollipop it seriously ruined my phone battery , heating issues , bootloops plus others so im waiting 5.1 to fix it as i called sony and they told me so , so never update your phone and listen to all these people telling you not you have a great stable firmware (kitkat) with xposed working flawlessly and those who told you to upgrade just got lucky and soon they will face exact problems

Firmware init + new SIM and always problems during calls....?!,?!,

I find I still have bluetooth issues with Omni... I haven't really played with AOKP KK or CM11 recently... (last time I tried CM11, BT was very buggy...) and Liquid Smooth KK looks great... but some combination of things resulted in it not seeing my sim/baseband, etc...
I know that I don't seem to experience very good battery life with KK ASOP roms... of course, I don't see very great stock rom battery life either. I should spend some quality time with BBS and try and nail down what usually kills my battery life.

It really depends on how much I'm using my phone and if I'm playing games...
Yesterday I was at ~ 56% after ~ 11 hours on a custom sony rom... but it was fairly light usage (30-40 minutes of bluetooth audio playback, multiple gmail account access, some twitter, some facebook, some facebook messenger, some google hangouts, no calls, a few texts, etc.)
Similar time frame on ASOP (Omni) I would have ~ 40%... perhaps a little less. It's not terribly scientific as I'm not doing the exact same thing every day on my phone. it's also not like I don't use my phone at all... I did discover that HDwidgets was really killing my battery recently so I stopped using that.. OH, and to get better battery life on ASOP I'd also disabled GPS and google location services.
In general numbers, I generally see another 3-4 hours of run time when I'm using a Sony stock rom vs ASOP... but I know others get significantly better battery life than I do. *shrug*
(btw, today I'm at ~ 41% battery left after ~ 11:50 on battery, and I have ~ an hour of screen time. (~61% of my battery use is Android OS today... over 9 hours of keep awake time)

battery gives little bit less as compared to 4.1.2...... my device useually give screen on timr 8:30 hrs of web browsing on 3g(4.1.2) ..... but after 4.2.2 update it screen hardly gives 7:30-8:00 hrs avg... I recommend to stick with stock rom and wait for the kitkat update..

Too many peeps don't realize the main issue with 4.2.2 is media. I get at least 8 hours just fine with daily use with 4.2.2 and WIFI enabled all the time, and use Spen 50/50. Of course power saving is enabled. I use Greenify and 360 Security, mostly because I have 200 apps and some are a bit of a memory hog. I use the stock touchwiz as many launchers are too buggy or become just as bloated as stock loaded apps for my own taste.
So far I have seen just about everything that could cause battery drain, and many point their fingers to 4.2.2 because they are too lazy to figure out what works well and what does not. Plus there are so many app updates that break functionality, no wonder Apple peeps are always a bit snobbish.
I have a few replies and a thread in the Q&A section. I have tried both custom ROM and prior release ROM. I am satisfied with 4.2.2 as it is very stable and works well for me.

Sources (link below) indicate that 5.1 actually resolves memory leak. I just got the C6506 and it was loaded with Stock Lollipop, but it was randomly rebooting itself. So i went back to 4.4.4 and i think it's flawless. I haven't had any issues with it. Hopefully 5.1 is a huge improvement over 5.0.2 and resolve the random reboot of the phone.

FWIW, 5.0.2 on C6506 has been great for me. Full stock on locked BL, rooted and debloated, with XZDR and Xposed installed and set up with about a dozen of modules. The phone is very stable, and more responsive and fluid than on KK. No lag at all anywhere, no indications of any problems related to a memory leak, noticeably better battery life, great deep sleep. The only thing I can't comment on is gaming, as I don't play games, other than occasional sudoku or solitaire. Everything else is excellent. I understand that everyone's experience may be different, but so far, I am very happy with the latest LP update. Waiting for 5.1, whenever it may come...
sweet, my biggest problem with 5.0 is the voicemail icon doesn't go away after reading voicemail... Have to restart phone...... Not a big deal, but can be irritating sometimes...
Nice to see that ZL will get 5.1
I just switched back to 4.4.4 from 5.02. Clearaudio and Xloud are missing in 5.02 (only active in Walkman app). Since I listen to a lot of audiobooks with the internal speaker, that's a killer for me. Tried other audio hacks to get more loudness, but the quality of those hacks was not satisfactory. (Besides, I wasted hours and hours trying to find a way to reactivate Xloud on 5.02)
So "Thank you Sony" for f***** up 5.02. Let's hope 5.1 gets better.

I don't own tab but personally I think lollipop is a failed OS. Too bad for battery life although overall performance is better.
Back to kitkat N9005 Tweaked3.95 + LK3.17
My T800 ran for 260 days on kitkat without needing to be rebooted or tuned off even once now that is stability and i used it every day, when i did turn it off it was just to recalibrate the battery.
Too many reported problems with lollipop from less battery life, to lines on the screen, touchscreen problem, flash led problems, too much white in the stock apps and setting menu, stupid on an oled display.
I rooted my T800 and fixed the microsd problem, added AC3 support to the stock video player so why do i need kitkat, not saying i will not upgrade in the future to android m.
John.
I'm in the process of downgrade right now!
Ye i just flashed lollipop rom yesterday and now im rolling back to kk, i dont know if samsung is just trolling or what. you get a tiny status bar & notif panel then a blown up recent app manager, wtf? Plus no official xposed, and everything is just white & sky blue :/
A lot of people on SamMobile are saying that lollipop is a wasted update as it offers nothing new, and introduces a load of problems, also they are not happy at the way Samsung releases the updates.
http://www.sammobile.com/2015/06/16/samsungs-software-update-policy-is-seriously-messed-up/
John.
For now, I believe they'll keep releasing 5.0 for older devices, and 5.1 for new ones.
Older models will always be one step behind, it's called marketing and forcing "impatient customers" to upgrade their device.
Although I notice these T700 and T800 5.0 versions keep getting patched with new updates and more stability, I believe we'll only get 5.1 when Android M is released for newer devices.
Then after 1, 2, or 3 years from release date and depending on each device, they are forgotten by the manufacturer and software updates are stopped, hoping you'll buy again a newer model, regardless of your device purchase date and condition.
And this in a way, explains why the XDA community is strong.
I finished downgrading. Tablet runs smoother, I can change many things in Xposed and generally, it just works.
Yeah, I choked on the lollipop, but i loved the chocolaty goodness of kitkat, stay on kitkat and don't be a sucker.

In my opinion, I'm on LP because I find it much smoother than KK.
The newer kernel and drivers on lollipop are the main reasons for better performance, which is easily seen in Antutu scores.
The only advantages I find in KK is that it's less buggy and ram leak is better.
When you say performance are you talking about gaming? , if so a lot of people don't game or only use simple games that don't require a great deal of system performance.
I don't game, and i have not seen any laginess on kitkat, i had it running 260 days without any problems i did not reset or shut-down a single time.

With LP you do need to reboot now and then due to ram leak problem.
Let's say LP is faster than KK at the beginning and after a few days it crawls due to ram leak, until you reboot and it's pristine again for the next days.
To be honest, while my initial reactions to Lollipop on both my TAB S and my Nexus 5 was less than favorable, after finding the right alternate ROMs I am very happy. Great performance (I don't game), great battery life, theming that allows me to black out the white menus and I'm very happy on both my devices. Would I be happy on stock? I don't know, and I understand not everyone wants to flash alternate ROMs. What I do think is that Lollipop takes a while to settle in and make sure you don't have an app that is incompatible (Samsung messed with ART). If you dive into it for only a couple of days, and you are really used to KitKat, of course you will want to go back. After using Lollipop for a while now, I would never go back.
Just my opinion. Not trying to sell anything to folks who disagree.
It`s great if you can tune lollipop the way you want, but most people cannot do this, and get stuck on a buggy stock rom until the next official update, which might never arrive, thank-you Samsung.
John.

Tend to agree. At first I wasn't keen on lollipop, but after using for a while and a little tweaking its running just fine. Dont know what this ram leak thing is all about as I've seen nothing of it. I would have thought, whatever that was, almost all manufacturers would have patched it by now including Samsung.

I have lolipop on three devices Nexus 5&10 (5.1.1) and a Tab S 10.5 (5.0.2). Right from the beginning both tablets have been rock solid with a small but noticable bump in speed. On the other hand my Nexus 5 lost its rock solid kitkat stability and no matter what I do, short of re-flashing Kitkat, I cannot seem to fix it.

Assuming you are asking about my Tab S experience, I used the guide in this forum to root without tripping Knox. I had to downgrade to stock Kitkat then root then upgrade to stock Lollipop. As soon as you downgrade using Odin you must do a factory reset in stock recovery, so yes I reset and always after the firmware change. In fact I've done the whole process several times as I've tried theming and every time I changed framework-res.apk it borked the UI and I need to do the whole process again.
At this time I've sworn off changing framework-res.apk. It is not a total write off as Flashfire back ups recover everything like a nadroid backup. Its weakness is that if you cannot start the app you can not do a restore. All that due to not wanting to loose my warranty on a two month old device so cannot flash a custom recovery like TWRP.
I did successfully flash from Lollipop B0E2 to B0E3 (boot, recover, system images) using Flashfire. That upgrade did not require a factory reset. In fact my user data, apps, root (SuperSU) and settings remained intact. All I need to do was re-flash any SuperSU policies I had previously installed along with any apps I installed in /system such as Viper4Android.
Specifically the upgrade and resulting experience was almost identical to upgrading Lollipop on my Nexus devices (5.0 through to 5.1.1), which is very easy and never required a factory reset. Although I usually clear the cache/dalvik just to be safe.

"New" Z1C

I got a killer deal on a new, still-in-the-box Z1 Compact, and I'm wondering what the best thing to do is with regard to updating to the latest build. I've heard all the horror stories about the 5.1.1 update that I'm sure will be my only "automatic" option for ever upgrading it from its default state.
I'm not all that well versed on the particulars of each version of Android, so I guess what I need to know is if this latest 5.1.1 build is universally bad for everyone with this phone. Since some have reported new batteries resolving the problem, do you think it'll work on a brand new, never-touched Z1C (I haven't even turned it on yet)?
And if you do advise against Lollipop, how screwed am I sticking with an old Android version? Are there a lot of apps that require Lollipop? Part of the killer deal was no warranty, so I've only got one shot at this.
SImply put: If someone gave you a brand new Z1C and it was a "use it or lose it" situation, what would you?
Thanks in advance.
Lucky you!
If I got a brand new Z1C I'd configure it precisely the way I've got it.
Put the latest CM 11 nightly on it (there's a guy in the CM 11 thread who regularly updates the build to include Google's latest security patches) and also the Xposed modules I'm using. It's just so well configured right now, I'm even going to put a new battery in it next week since it's still really the best phone for me.
(Will consider ditching it for the Z3C later this year though.)
Right now? You may accept the deal! If there's no warranty and want a Stock-yet-Rooted experience you could go with a Stock based ROM (you can find plenty in the forum, based on 5.1.1 or 4.4.4, I suggest you to look ad Dstriker, based on 5.1.1)! Or you could get a CM based ROM like the Resurrection. Whatever you'll decide, work from that point with Xposed modules, Root apps etc.. to enhance your experience (if that really matters to you, otherwise just stick with the stock one).
I had the same problem about a week ago.
What I did was:
*updated it to latest firmware
*rooted with King Root
*backed up TA
*unlocked bootloader
*installed [KERNEL][Z1C][5.0-5.1][F2FS] Advanced-Kernel v16.0[11/16/2015]
*converted data & cache partition to F2FS
*installed [ROM][Z1C][LP][1.216][LB/UB]DstrikerZ1 Kai ROM SP001[27-Nov][Z5 LOOKS and FEATURES]
*installed Xposed
*did factory reset, cache and dalvik cache
*installed [Z~Z5 Series][EXRxTHS]SONY DRM FUNCTION RESTORATION FOR UB DEVICE
*rebooted to os
*Profit
At the moment after three days of usage 54% battery left. And the phone is flying :good:
If battery is your #1 priority, stay with stock or stock-based KK. I don't think there's much of any issues with app compatibility. However, I also haven't experienced any of the LP 'nightmares' some have reported. I've been on LP with this phone since it came out, and the battery drain is the only considerable downside I've found, and there are some roms that offer excellent relative battery performance, (dstriker, munjeni's 270, Oregon69's MIUI port...), and with battery saving tweaks, possibly comparable to KK. I would say go with latest version and try it out.
For battery, stock KK4.4.4 is still the best. Although, I'm running 5.1.1 and actually, it still brings me through two! complete days (i'm not a gamer, so light user).
However, with LTE / 4g switched on running my LP5.1.1, battery is going down like the Titanic on the iceberg.....so I only switch on LTE when really needed.
5.1.1 is just fine, battery difference between it and KK was negligible for me and other than that it runs very well
only downside is that ugly as hell blue status bar
5.1.1 is fine for me as well, 2-3 days regularly (no gaming).
I have stock 5.1.1, Locked Bootloader, but still have root access and TWRP.
Not had any problems(Needed to modify RW on SD card) and battery seems to be good.
