Hi guys, want to buy new phone and looking to get the best for my money, so Its up to M8, G3 and S5. I like M8 and G3 more than S5 but I put it here because they were flagships and it has the best camera and good battery. So would you buy M8 again if you need to buy a phone now, rather than this two, and do you regret buying it? I need to pay about 50e more for M8 from G3, or 30e more from S5, is it worth it? Its important foe me to get stock android M on it, I guess M8 will get it? Thank you.
That's a tricky question to ask on the M8 forum. Obviously, pretty much everyone here owns the M8, and bought it for a reason. You probably won't get many responses in this device forum to the effect of the G3 or S5 being better!
I compared the M8 and S5 side by side before buying (way back in May 2014) and if you haven't done so already, I highly recommend it. The M8 is simply a beautiful piece of industrial engineering, which looks and feels high end in every way. In comparison (of even on its own, for that matter), the S5 is a cheap feeling, plasticky piece of junk. Any notion that the M8 and S5 were at all comparable on paper; quickly dissolved once I compared both devices in person. It simply became no contest.
And while on paper, the chipset specs should be identical, the TouchWiz interface makes the S5 a laggy mess compared to the M8 (and most of Samsung's devices for last year's "generation" suffer for this). You can just Google the S5 lag, and find all sorts of complaints. This was when I compared back on KitKat, so I'm not sure if the S5's lag is any better on Lollipop. But it was outright noticeable and embarrassing when I compared the 2 side by side.
I never checked out the G3 in person. I have never been a fan of the industrial design of the LG phones (just seemed cheap to me), and the reviews led me to conclude the G3 was not worth my consideration. "Better" than past Lg devices, but still just plastic, and to me no comparison to the M8. I've seen a few folks on here that have switched from the G3 to the M8, and would never go back.

I'm not sure where you are getting the notion that S5 has the "best" camera. That is somewhat subjective. Most folks just look at the paper specs (MP mostly) and say the M8 has a bad camera, without understanding how cameras work.
Anandtech has some really objective and technical phone reviews. Their conclusion was that the S5 has better resolution (obviously) and detail in daylight, but clearly inferior to the M8 in low light (to the point that the S5 pics look just miserable). So its impossible to say the S5 camera is "best" all around, and somewhat depends on how/when you use your camera phone, also.

As for Android M, it looks like HTC "confirmed" it via Twitter for the M8 (as reliable as that may be).
Samsung has yet to confirm M for the S5, as far as I can see from Googling. Nothing seems confirmed for the G3, either.

I know that, just wanted to hear from the people who own it, use it for some time, thats the real review. I guess no one regret buying it.
Well I like G3 because its affordable (330e) and I get 32GB with 3gb of RAM but as I have seen M8 is still faster. That big screen looks nice in that compact body(same size as M8) like LG UI which is highly customizable. But M8 have that speakers which are something best on Android and I guess little better battery. Metal unibody doesnt mean a lot if I put it in a tpu case, but looks sexy. Is it hard to use power button on the top?
As the best, I was thinking best out of these 3, but M8 dont have that bad camera, watched some reviews and samples, but still in daylight S5 makes better pictures. Still S5 is no more interesting for me, its too ugly and everyone has it, G3 wins it so now its G3 vs M8.
Thanks for response.

You know what??? When someone takes the time to type several paragraphs to answer your (rather vague) question (plus inaccurate statement of "best camera") and you type a vague response of "I know that", it sounds somewhat insulting.

Top power button is fine. I don't actually understand folks that find its an issue. Power button on the back (G3) seems awkward to me, if not outright strange. Maybe its something you get used to, if you own it. But I also think that friends and family members not used to your phone will be puzzled by the power button location.
The screen on the G3 is supposed to be nice. But yes, the stereo front spacing speakers on the M8 are just wonderful. Its something that should have been on smartphones for years. In my opinion, a back speaker is simply horrible design. They are just trying t save space on the front (not that great a reason) while putting the speaker in the worst possible location.
A lot of what you are talking about at this point (screen size, using a TPU case) is personal preference and individual usage patterns. So I mostly think you just need to decide for yourself.
As far as regrets, as I mentioned, I've seen some folks on here that regretted the G3, and moved on to the M8. Maybe if you look in the G3 forum, you can find some folks that did the opposite. But I somewhat doubt it. Personally, I feel the M8 is the best phone of its generation (2014). If I broke or lost mine even now, there is a good chance I would just replace it with another M8.
Not sure if modding is a concern of yours. But this is XDA after all, and the M8 has a great community. A bit more quiet as folks have moved to the M9. But still pretty robust.

No worries. I'll let it go this time.

Guys and gals, let me start off by saying that I am an absolute phone whore. Last year alone, I owned almost every single flagship at one point or another. I've rooted all my phones, have flashed 100's of roms, etc. You can check my posting history, blah, blah. I'm not trying to brag or anything, I just want people to know that I'm not some Android noob.
Anyhow, I am most recently coming from a Nexus 5 and a Note 3 before that. Last year, I owned the HTC One M7 twice. Each time for about a week. The first time is when my gf and I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile. When we didn't get good reception at work, we switched to AT&T and I once again got the M7. We are still on AT&T, but I dumped my M7 after a week on AT&T for the Note 3. Anyhow, here were my issues with the M7 that I see again with the M8:
1. After all the constant "excellent build quality" praise that the M7 and now M8 constantly get, I really just don't see it. Based on materials alone, yes, the M7 and M8 are excellent in materials. In actual build quality, they are both quite poor in my opinion. Both of my M7's from last year had screen fitment issues where they weren't flush with the top and bottom speaker grills. It annoyed the heck out of my OCD self and was one of the few reasons why I returned them both.
My M8 has a very similar issue. On the right side of the phone, the top and bottom speaker grills are raised above the glass. So my finger snags when I'm swiping up or down on the screen. Super annoying and I'm going to exchange it for sure, if I even keep this phone in general.
2. The LED notification light....if you can call it one. Is HTC the only smartphone manufacturer that doesn't understand the importance and desire from consumers to have a bright, legible and multi-colored LED notification light? The one on the M7 and now M8 is pathetic. Might as well not even have one. It is the size of a pinhole, can only show green or amber, and it is next to useless.
To HTC's credit, the one on the M8 does seem to be a bit more visible than it was on the M7, but it could be in my head. And also keep in mind that I knew exactly what I was getting into when I bought the M8, so it's my own fault with this issue. I still wanted to mention it however as it still bothers me.
3. The camera. I will keep this one short as there is constant discussion about it and people have varying opinions. My opinion is that it's lackluster, and I never thought I would say my Nexus 5 camera is better than a premium flagship phone. But it is, and I will leave it at that.
And once again, I knew what I was getting into before I purchased the M8, but I fell for HTC's duo camera marketing thinking it might somehow make 4mp's better than 4mp's. It didn't and I'm disappointed for the most part.
4. Software....I don't know what it is, but Sense 6 feels cold and empty to me. Coming from the Nexus 5, I know this might sound like a bizarre statement, but something feels off and I can't quite pinpoint it. It feels, dare I say, boring. Yes it is fast and smooth, I will give it that. But that's about where it ends for me.
I also can't wrap my head around HTC still not addressing their messaging app oddity. On the M7, when you got a new text message and opened the app, the new message wouldn't immediately appear and it would refresh quickly and then it would show up. I don't know about anyone else, but that is super duper annoying to me. And it's sadly still present on the M8.
Some might say, "use Hangouts or a 3rd party app". And I would say "nope". I hate how Hangouts handles SMS and MMS and I don't like to use 3rd party apps for text messaging. Just personal preference.
5. The physical aspect of the phone itself....it's just too tall. I understand they had to cram amps, a bigger battery, etc into the phone. But almost as tall as the Note 3? Come on. The phone feels good in the hand however, but it's just a little cumbersome. And I still hate the top of phone power button placement even thought they moved it from the left side to right.
With all of that being said, I still really, really like this phone believe it or not. The above average sound from the speakers, good battery life, good reception (compared to my Nexus 5), very nice quality screen, and fluid performance all add up for me.
So now I'm in the dilemma of deciding if the cons outweigh the pros enough to return the phone. Are my gripes unreasonable? Am I alone here? Any advice or thoughts?
Thanks!
You are not alone...I have owned pretty much every Android flagship as well.
At least some if not most will have the same gripes.
I have a One on the way soon but I am not as particular (at least I think so).
1. I never had screen fitment issues. I owned about 4 M7's (don't ask lol)
2. Notification light...ya this one bugs me. You pointed out yourself and I'll leave it at that.
3. I give up on the camera discussion. I'll refrain on chiming in on this because this can go on for days. In the end, I'm ok with it. If I want good shots, I have a regular camera.
4. I love Sense..simple, clean, and fast. I don't need all the bells and whistles. If I do, I pull out my Note 3 which is used for work mainly.
The One (pun intended) thing that keeps me coming back is the M7/M8 just does what it does best...be a smartphone. I think the biggest complaint is the camera. I think the M8's strong points are more than enough to make up for the lackluster camera which isn't the best but it's adequate.
For you WizeGuyDezignz, the questions is are you willing to return/sell/exhange the M8 for all the things you point out?

I was just recollecting today about how much I disliked my M7 (and how happy I was to trade it for an S4), and I couldn't remember why.
This is the #1 reason why (with bad battery life of course)! There is so little color and so little contrast that the whole UI is BORING! TouchWiz on the S4 was colorful and inviting. Although it was more bloated, the experience was more pleasant somehow.
I also have to agree with all of your other gripes. The build "quality" seemed quite lacking (and mine was pretty good compared to some of the "Ones" that looked like trash out of the box). Apple does it right with the metal. HTC, not so much. I'm canceling my M8 Dev order and either going for a GPE or an S5. I'd never hated a phone as much as I had the M7 (just /using/ it made me unhappy), and I really don't want to go through the same thing with the M8 (Sense hasn't changed much and I'm sure it will go down the same). If I were you, I'd return it and go for an S5 or GPE as well.
And no, you aren't alone/crazy, but maybe I am

I have a M7 right now, will be getting M8 when T-Mobile has it. But I'll chime in as well, since theyre pretty similar.
1. Yea, I agree. I had tons of issues with my first M7, my second M7 is better but still not perfect. Your issues with the M8 sound a lot better than either of my M7s though.
First one: Badly mis-aligned top and bottom speaker grilles. Recessed power button (had to use my nail to really push it). Screen wasnt flush with the bottom grille.
Second one (current one): Top and bottom grilles are better, but still slightly misaligned. Power button is normal. Screen is slightly sunken in on the lower left corner, but I'm not sure if this developed over time.
2. Yep.. I miss the notification lights from my old phones. They all did this better than the HTC One, except for the HTC G2... which had an equally useless tiny LED behind the speaker grille... hmmmmmmm
3. I'm one of the few that actually likes the camera. I have no need for so many megapixels. My Canon 5D Classic has 12.8MP and my Panasonic GM1 has 16MP. Even with these cameras I dont like to zoom in 100%, even with my sharpest lenses in the best lighting I rarely want to zoom in that far. Theres no need for a phone to have that much... I'd say 8MP at most, but I'm fine with the 4MP right now.
4. I dont have an issue with Sense. But maybe you feel its "cold" because its completely black and white? I believe Sense 6 allows you to change the colors a bit, so try that.
5. Yeaa.. its a pretty big phone. I'm not sure how I'll adjust to the M8 after having my M7. I would rather lose the speakers since I don't use em anyway but meh. Maybe next year.

Yeah, the reason why I posted this was to type all of my thoughts out to make me think more logically. On the surface, I want to keep the M8 for the style/design, speakers, etc. But I can't let that be the only reason. I need to look beyond those things and value the functionality of the software and the user experience.
This is why I am actually going to consider the S5. I already pre-ordered it for my gf since she wants to stick with Samsung. So I am going to give hers a test drive and make up my mind at that time.
Thanks for your input!
They aren't completely black and white (one is though), but all four themes lack contrast. There's no "custom" theme option from what I've seen (ability to customize the four main colors), and the whole thing looks too bland to me because of it. To each their own, but Sense just doesn't cut it for me. Although I've installed ROMs numerous times, I always find myself back at stock for one reason or another. Hence, I'm against putting a custom ROM on the M8 to fix the colors.

Honestly, I think it would be better to just install a custom launcher or wait for custom roms (if you dont mind unlocking/rooting your phone).
Samsung's Touchwiz is the worst thing I have ever used. I've never owned a Samsung phone but I've helped plenty of friends with their S3s, S4s, etc. I also cant stand the plastic build. And the S5 looks like a bad ripoff of the original Nexus 7.

I've been in the exact same situation as you, wanting to get the M8 because of the metal/hype/great reviews, but if you don't like the UI you don't like the UI. I'm very glad I could help, and don't forget you helped me also! It was your post that made me realize why I disliked the M7 so much

I considered the Google Launcher, but all of the stock apps have the theme/color issue too. Probably the biggest reason I've stayed away from ROMs (except for when I've tried them of course ) is that they're never 100% perfect, and rarely as stable as stock.
The GPE caught my eye, but I'd just assume get a Nexus 5... Some metal, speakers, SD slot, and a bit more battery life are in no way worth a $300 premium IMO (and more weight+slower updates). Does the GPE even support the Dot View?

... You all know there has been TONS of themes for Sense made here on xda right? Can make it look however you like.. sure there's no built in option for it in the ui itself, but there are flashable zips aplenty here. That should be a non-issue. And if you like the nexus(aka stock/aosp), the same launchers work for this phone and the m7. Can even convert the m7 to GPE, and I'm sure the m8 will be the same once we get soff..
As for build quality, you need to at least exchange the phones, I've had 3 m7's and now the m8 and all are absolutely perfect. No raised speaker grills or anything of the sort. Had to just be a bad luck at the time(s) or something :/

I know my team already has some made and working on more, and I know there are a couple other teams/people making themes for sense 6 too but don't have any links handy. It's taking a little longer as there were massive changes compared to 5.5 but yeah there are themes out for sense6 and there will be a bunch more soon.

And I'll be honest:
Even if the colors were nice and had good contrast, it still wouldn't work for me. The whole thing: menus, blinkfeed, settings, they're all too /flat/. This may seem weird, but the new TouchWiz has some "texture" to the menus and such.
Also, as an iOS user, I was actually insanely surprised about how similar Samsung's settings and quick toggles are to iOS 7's... But hey. I like it

Some of those icons, shapes, and colors all look quite similar to me.
Not to mention Samsung reverse-engineered iCloud backups so if you switch you can get all your iMessages, texts, call logs, calendar appointments, app data, and other stuff on your S5 XD

That does look kindaa similar. But I'm sure there are plenty of valid arguments on both sides... Didnt Windows Phone do the whole flat look in general first?
Meh. I stopped supporting Samsung a while ago for my own reasons, so I have no idea who did what first anymore.
Yeah I don't care who did it first, but I just wanted to emphasize how hard Sammy is trying to get iOS users to switch. They'll get my money, but it'll be used on my "mess around" line. No Android offering can take me away from iOS 100% yet
Edit: Windows phone was the OG flat--more reminds me of Sense than iOS though (very little color, mostly 2-3 tone). iOS is colorful and flatter than it was, but not Sense 6 or WP8 flat.
I had a Lumia 1520 for a while, and hated it for the same reason I did the M7 (OS colors).
On WP, there was nothing you could do to change it

Thanks!

I also have this, does anyone else? Is this a fault and should I be sending this back? Only have a day or two left cooling period so need to decide asap.
thanks
i will let go of all the nega on the main OP
however regarding build, we all been there before, a unit or two or even a dozen will never reflect something that is in mass production
products coming from China will forever have a possibility of imperfections, yes even iphones, for that if you are really picky just replace your unit
millions of happy M7 owners will disagree with you there, yes there was a bad batch at launch but it quickly moved on
so why go through this everytime as if its something new, just hand pick or replace your unit and move on

But hey. I like it
Here's what I mean:
Some of those icons, shapes, and colors all look quite similar to me.
Not to mention Samsung reverse-engineered iCloud backups so if you switch you can get all your iMessages, texts, call logs, calendar appointments, app data, and other stuff on your S5 XD

The One with Sense 6.0 has a theme chooser builtin, it makes the theme making VERY easy for XDA folks.
Just pay a visit to the themes section and see how in just 5 days how much themes are made and consider 1000x more in a couple of weeks, INCLUDING colors and icons of your beloved ios 7
Well guys, I returned my M8 today and pre-ordered the S5. While in the AT&T store as I was waiting for them to process my return, I played with the S5 that they had in the store. I'm sold and it's a better fit for me. The M8 got really boring very fast. I guess I'm not a Sense fan.
Oh well, I understand the people who are fans. Good luck all!! :good:
I have had my first hands on the M8 today. Speed aside, I swear I wasn't impressed. The M7 is a legendary phone like the Galaxy S2 was. This M8 is the same as the M7 but taller and the metal is brushed. Now that I have had my hands on the M8 I can honestly say that I prefer the M7 (looks).

Hello all,
I'd like to start but discussing how I ended up getting this amazing phone. My LG G2, after screwing me over multiple times in the past, has finally decided to come to an abrupt end. Don't get me wrong G2 users, it's a beautiful device, but under the hood it can be a major pain in the butt to deal with. So my G2 failed around 3 weeks ago, and I found myself without a spare smartphone and decided to finally take the plunge for something new. After countless evenings of reading and debating, I decided to go with the HTC One M8, being the favorite smartphone of many critics. The 4MP camera put me off at first, and I would not buy it because of its "low end camera". Then I stumbled upon the Pictures taken with the M8 thread. What I learned was that with the right settings and a bit of patience, this 4 MP camera could easily outperform my LG G2 's camera. Resolution isn't everything folks. So at last I decided to buy this gorgeous looking device. Not being a fan of paying almost double for your device via AT&T Next, I began to hunt unlocked versions of it online, and rejoiced when I saw it being sold by HTC for as little as $500!
I instantly ordered the unlocked variation. Had I had the choice now, I would have taken the developer edition, but, oh well. I can easily unlock the bootloader myself. So the phone arrived a little over 2 weeks ago and I have loved it ever since receiving it! The build quality is simply stunning, and Sence is probablythe smoothest OEM developed launcher I have ever used. My only gripe so far is the battery life due to a bit of heating, but this seems to be a general Lollipop bug. I'll either wait for Android 5.1 or till Sunshine S-OFF is updated to work with ART runtime to see how it performs on Kit-Kat (I upgraded to Lollipop soon as I received it, followed by a Factory Reset for good measure.)
Overall, I love this phone! It's nothing short of amazing. The one thing troubling me now is the M9. It's been released and is being sold for $660 if I remember correctly. I can still technically find a good reason to send this one back, put $160-200 on top for the M9, and take that instead. But is it worth doing that? As of the moment it seems that the M9 is just slightly faster and has a better camera. I myself am actually not to much of a fan of the sticking out camera though. I love the uniform round back of the M8. Also, I should add, that extra money would probably be better spent elsewhere, like going towards a new monitor, which I actually NEED.
So what do you all think? Am I going to regret not having spent the extra money for an M9? The M8 seems perfect for me as is. I'm not really sure what I should do at the moment...
Thank you all for the read!!!
EDIT: It seems sunshine has now been updated to work with 5.0.1. Awesome!
Everyone knew the M9 was coming, so I don't know why that debate didn't occur to you before buying the M8.
The M9 having a "better" camera may be debatable. Reviews on the camera are pretty disappointing so far. Don't fall back into the trap of megapixel chasing. Just because the M9 has a 20 MP camara, doesn't make it "better".
And in fact Anandtech (which has more technical and objective reviews than most other websites) while they don't have a full review up yet, upon initial review goes as far as to suggest the M8 may actually be better than the M9!
http://www.anandtech.com/show/9102/the-htc-one-m9-review-part-1
With the M9, you have an incremental increase in chipset specs, a "different" camera (while not necessarily better, at least not a slam-dunk), and otherwise almost identical to the M8. So identical, HTC's own marketing folks can't tell the two apart!
http://phandroid.com/2015/03/26/htc-one-m9-m8-flub
With the M8, you have s-off, a strong existing XDA community, and a nice selection of ROMs. Might be worthwhile to save your money for the next flagship.
On the other hand, a lot of folks (devs included) will probably be jumping ship to go to the M9 in the coming weeks/months.
I'm not sure if you made the wrong move or not, but one of my work colleagues got the M9 today and we were playing around with it. We both thought that the camera isn't a major improvement. That would of been my only reason to upgrade... Speed-wise, i'm using a custom GPE rom and that almost holds up to stock on the M9. The M9 is a amazing phone, but this is the first time in 6 years that i'm not disappointed to be on a 2 year contract. I'll happily go another year using my M8.
Hope that helps.
I was literally in the same boat. I knew that M9 was coming but you gotta think about the price too. You would have paid more for a M9 right now and I don't think those extra money is actually worth it. Is it a bad phone? No, but I think last years flagships are good enough right now to last you a few years more without hiccups. I also find that if you have the M8 already there is no need to upgrade to the M9. Simply not a big difference to warrant the upgrade
Thank you all for your input! Yes, I was aware that the M9 was coming, but I was in need of a smartphone, and did not expect the M9 to come out soon as it did. I'll probably stick with the M8 then. Can't wait to root this thing and flash away!
I too am almost in a similar boat. I currently own an LG G3 and am currently relatively unsatisfied with it. Battery life is pretty poor, it is warm a lot of the time and the UI is horrible. I personally want something that screams quality and the One M8 seems like my best bet for around £300, provided I sell my G3. Personally I'm not feeling all too fussed by the M9 as most of the software features will likely be portable to the M8. All that I am worried for is the update support. Realistically the M8 should only be getting updates for one more year, which to me does not sound great. But given the GPE, does anybody reckon this phone has a couple more years of life?

It should be around another year or so but if I'm you, getting the M8 would be well worth as compared to the M9

Ouch dude that sucks. My friend got himself the G3 a few months ago and sold it instantly. It was plagued with all sorts of issues. After the G2, I'll never buy an LG phone again.
Just got my HTC one M8 as a 12 month early upgrade contract, works out much cheaper than the M9, will wait 12 months and get the M9 when the price drops a bit, or thats what I was thinking anyway, until I realised, im actually feeling a bit cheated by HTC with the M8 over the M7.
The reasons are pretty much in the picture below, they moved the capative buttons from the bottom of the phone on the HTC one M7 to the bottom of the actual screen ???? so although it comes with a bigger screen, the usable area is the same size screen as the M7, is there anyway to auto hide this buttons when not in use ? or get rid of them all together, of course then that leaves the problem of how I go back or home etc without these buttons.
None of this should be any surprise, its easy to research the phone or try it out at the store, before you purchase.
Hardware keys (on the front of the phone) have for the most part disappeared on Android phones (with Samsung being one of the few major manufacturers still holding on to them). I can't say I'm thrilled about it, either. But Google is the main driver here. And the style trend is toward phones with thinner and thinner bezels, no hardware buttons on the front, etc.
The nav bar already hides itself in most apps where the increased screen height is most useful. If you want more than that, hiding the softkeys/nav bar is possible with 3rd party apps or custom ROMs.

Thanks, S-off'd it with sunshine already, Got TWRP on there, flashed Insert Coin to it too, unfortunatley testing in store isnt an option for me, my mobile provider is mail order only and the only other downside is I work 6 days a week, so finding the time to get to a store is pretty tough too.

Sure, I understand that everyone has different life circumstances. Some folks aren't even located anywhere near a store (as in hours to drive). But its a lot of money to drop, and making the time to do so (if possible) can be very helpful in avoiding buyers remorse.
One case in point, a year ago I was actually on the fence between the M8 and the Galaxy S5. On paper, they have very competitive specs. And despite being a long time HTC fan, I was somewhat leaning toward the GS5 due to the popularity of the line (and therefore broader community, more available accessories, etc.). But once I got the 2 phones in hand, it was instantly clear to me that the GS5 would have been the wrong choice. The GS5 was simply not even in the same league as far as exterior build quality; and just felt like cheap plastic junk compared to the M8. I was really glad I compared them in person before buying.

LOL thanks, me and a mate funny enough are always battling it out between the SG's and HTC's, we're on the same network and travel the country, but everytime we get cut off, its always the HTC's fault in his eyes, obviously the other way around for me. Im a HTC fan boy, he's a Samsung fan boy, I have to agree with you regarding the plastic though, but the new SG6 has taken the same route and mould as HTC, one piece metal body, however, HTC win it simply due to thier Sense overlay, I love it and have always loved it.
On a plus note, ive found the option in InsertCoin's rom to hide it when not needed and swipe up when required to bring it back, so thanks very much for your help. :good:

GS6 is actually a glass back, so its a little more akin to the iPhone 5/5S (then again, that's just based on what I've seen online, I haven't held it in hand yet, lol). But yeah, Samsung finally came around to the fact that folks actually like their $700 smartphones to not feel like a cheap plastic kids toy. And yes, Touchwiz is a joke compared to Sense. The TW icons and color palette seem more appropriate for (again) a kids plaything than an expensive grown-ups tool.
You should see the damage HTC done with M9.

Its well summed up in the conclusion of Anandtech's preliminary review of the M9 (I respect them for having more technical and objective reviews than most other websites):
http://www.anandtech.com/show/9102/the-htc-one-m9-review-part-1/7
Although they are holding off on final conclusions (due to a last minute software update) they go as far as to say the M8 may actually be a better phone than the M9!
Hello guys,
I am thinking of purchasing a One M9 but not really sure yet. I need you guys, owners of this beauty, to convince me why I should or why I should not get it. I have had a M8 before it got stolen from me and I absolutely loved it, it was the best device I owned and I still miss it after a year. I now have a OnePlus One but the M9 is so tempting..please share all your thoughts/experiences with the M9 and help me decide! I've read a lot of reviews and threads here on XDA but some were really old and most of the issues in there that disturbed me got fixed, such as overheating etc (I believe).
Thank you in advance!

I still think it holds true today. If you loved the M8 and aren't expecting the M9 to be vastly different, you'll really love the M9. I'd occasionally get lag with the M8 and the camera was not great. M9 fixed those issues for me. Battery life on M9 might not (PROBABLY ISN'T) as good, but it's good enough for me.

Thank you sir, waiting for more replies!
EDIT: Is there a full guide for rooting, getting S-Off, updating firmware and such things? I know it's kinda tricky with the CIDs and all those things..kinda out of the loop after a year of not owning a HTC device.
EDIT2: Will I be able to relock & regain warranty if I unlock the device with Sunshine rather than HTCDev? Or is there another way to do this?

Yeah, there are a few guides floating around in the general section. It's not hard, especially if you're planning to S-off. Right now, you have to unlock through HTC dev, then root, then S-off with sunshine. It's no longer possible for sunshine to temp root so you can S-off before you unlock the boot loader.
I went from the M7 to the M9 and couldn't love this phone any more. If you liked the M8, you should like the M9 as long as you're not expecting a big jump in performance. I looked at the M8 and it left me cold, but the tweaks on this version convinced me.
I looked at the OPO and concluded I didn't want such a big phone. I'm not sure you'll notice a difference in performance as the specs are pretty similar.
If you get it, it's worth going s-off and updating to the latest firmware, which fixes the problems people have complained about. There are charging and throttling issues on earlier firmware.

+1 the M9 is a fantastic replacement for the M7, and if you loved the M8 then its a no brainer
coming from OPO to M9, at first M9 felt so small(I hated big phones before OPO). But actually 5 inch is the best size..one hand operation is possible again.
m9 feels absolutely premium compared to OPO.
m9 had many many issues when it was launched. but after firmware updates, they all are fixed.
battery wise i can say it is at par with OPO now with custom ROM installed. i get a very decent SOT.
camera has potential to get very good clicks.
audio quality through headphones is also good compared to OPO output.
go for m9 if you like its premium looks, a smaller and perfect screen size, far better customer service.

Thanks, I was looking forward to a review from a OPO owner. I am waiting for another week to see what the OP2 has to offer but mostly likely I'm going for the M9, we will see soon enough!
Thanks to everyone who replied.
I think the question to be asked is "why not?".
Having owned HTC devices starting with the TyTNII to HD2, Inspire, M7 and now M9, I have become very comfortable with Sense. That, along with HTC's superior build quality make me very reluctant to jump ship. I found the GS6 to feel less than robust, despite their dramatic leap in construction quality - it still just didn't feel like a premium phone, and their interface is still obtuse. Also, if you plan on running Xposed for mods such as Xprivacy, the M9 definitely makes that easier.
I know that HTC is the phone company that phone fanboys love to hate. It seems they've become the industry's whipping horse and focus of a lot of criticism, some of which is well deserved, such as the camera lacking OIS and perhaps not having the software ready for release. Other criticism is not well deserved, and I wonder if those same people who comment about the "recycled design" would say the same thing about a Porsche 911 which hasn't changed much in terms of general styling for decades. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Anyway, I'm thrilled with this phone now with the latest firmware and LP5.1 and I'm sure you'd be very happy with it based on your previous experience.
Hope this helps.

I agree with everything Mr. Cat just said, but will add that for the price the M9 is selling for on Swappa should make it extra enticing. New - resale AT&T model for $445. sheesh.

Poor first impressions have really hurt it.
If you still had an m8 id say keep it and wait for the m9 to drop in price but seeing as it got swiped by some sticky fingered turd the m9 is a good fast device but the screen is crap, the camera is mediocre and the heat issues are serious.
I use waze while driving and the phone bakes to the point where its difficult to keep hold of it for more than a minute or two (when the journey has finished!).

I come from the OPO and I have never loved a device so much... (im talking about the opo). Only reason I switched was cuz I randomly started getting touchscreen issues with my OPO, I'm a fast typer so I couldn't deal with it anymore and nothing got it fixed. Sold it and got this phone, the M9. I did have my OPO for about six months so I can actually talk about it.
Battery is not nearly as good as the OPO in my opinion. I always had 5-7 on screen time, I now barely get 3.5... Aside from that I can't complain about performance, but development here is not as big as the OPO, there were some big things on that forum boy let me tell you. I'm not as happy as I was with the OPO, but this is not a bad phone, don't get me wrong.

Development here will pick up if/when the CM team gets the camera and a few of the other kinks worked out. Most of the main sense developers are already here, but AOSP was always going to be a slow process.

A completely open environment like Nexus or OPO, especially one that launches with CM, is always going to have more development going on than a proprietary one. Development for the M9 could be better, but it's comparable to other flagship phones right now.
Now with the OnePlus 2 being launched I'm even more confused. I don't mind the "slow" development as I will be using ARHD if I get the M9..or maybe a new ROM when CM comes for the M9. Gonna wait a little more and see what convinces me more but I find the M9 more attractive
I am going to buy LG G4. I have heard a lot about hardware failure of this phone. So, what is your opinion on this? Need your guidance, please.
Regards
My opinion would be to buy a G3 or Moto X Pure, if you're looking for something on the cheaper end. G4 is a mess.
If extra cash isn't an issue I'd say wait and check out the HTC 10 tomorrow. The Huawei Mate 8 looks sweet, too, if you can find one.
A lot of boot loop issues with early production models. It may not be the case with later production models, but these boot loop issues take 5-8 months to show. If you are buying brand new, make sure you have at least a 12 month warranty.

Bootloop has been reported as far as 603.
510's for model US991 seem good. We have it, and haven't had ANY of the reported issues (bootloop nor others).

I had am M9 for less than a week. It's a beautiful phone that functioned fine but it got hot fast. I had GPS on for maybe five minutes and the phone got hot enough for me to feel it on my leg through my jeans. Very warm. If you can handle that, it's a nice phone.

What about OP2?
I've never owned a of the OP devices, only because I could never get ahold of them.
Currently, I'm super excited about the HTC 10. It is sounding amazing. Can't wait for a few reviews.

If I may throw my hat in the ring, I have a G4 and am quite dissatisfied. I am getting a Nexus for my next phone and I suggest you take a good look at them as well.
G4 is a beautiful device it does as commands and is loyal. I bought mine recently and it looks elegant with brown leather. Yes it had hardware failure with 505 and i did get mine keeping that in mind. I own a 512 EU H model. Rooted. Works as a charm. Still optimus has its moments but
Thank god it isnt touchwiz. The camera is jewel and it paints magnificently on the patriot class 10 64gb i reserved for it. Other than that its your call.

Another vote for the nexus 6p from me. A big amoled screen with front facing speaker running the latest android is a perfect combination. It may be expensive outside the US but if u already consider the m9, the 6p won't be much of a stretch in term of budget. No sdcard and removable battery are nexus' only downsides

Any specific reason that you're dissatisfied with the G4?
Nexus are certainly nice phones though

I was excited because I finally got a phone that wasn't trash and was expecting to get the ROMs and Kernels etc. that a flagship usually has and was lucky enough to get with lesser phones like the original LG Volt. I was quickly screwed by LG. A spectacular phone ruined by hardware problems and a locked bootloader. I won't have these problems with a Nexus, plus the price is better and it has support for GSM and CDMA networks. I can go to and from any carrier I choose while not having to wait 9 months for them to push OTAs or load my phone with trash. It is for all intents and purposes, my dream phone. The only thing missing is external storage, which may change with the next one. If you don't care about root and what not, buy a Samsung. The hardware and software are superb, unless you don't like TouchWiz of course. I don't mind OEM skins, so it doesn't bother me but some hate it. If you don't want a sammy, I would also recommend HTC flagships, they are praised by everyone I know who owns one.

I guess it can be summed up as having too high of expectations.

Expectations can really be everything. If having complete control over the phone is the top priority, getting a Nexus is the obvious solution. Especially if you want other features like GSM/CDMA compatibility. And the quick updates are great of course.
I suppose I have the benefit of lower expectations - well, mainly in regards to the lack of an unlocked bootloader and the potential for bootloop issues (or the need for a warranty). For me, expandable storage is a must. As is having a great camera (and all the phones mentioned seemingly do). I also like the replaceable battery - as it has the potential to add long-term life to the phone. OEM skins aren't the worst thing, though TouchWiz isn't my favorite. Obviously, I would love complete control of the phone, or at least the ability to completely remove and bloatware I don't want, but most of the time I am happy enough using a launcher like Nova.
The Nexus is a little big for me as well. I'm coming from a 5" screen, so even the 5.5" on the G4 is a little big - and likely would be too big if not for the relatively small size of the phone otherwise. When I was at Best Buy recently, the S7 was definitely the best device to hold in my hand. Looks great, works great, but cost too much for me right now. Also, while this may not be a factor for everyone, the Gear VR did not meet my expectations - and certainly gave me concerns about impact on my eyes and/or brain, as well as doubtful how long the battery would last using it
In the end, ordering a G4 (with a US warranty) + case, screen protector and tax was less than $350. Sure, I won't be able to root it (at least right now), and I will always be cautious about the bootloop occurring, but that seems like a great deal for less than half the price of the S7, and $200+ less than a Nexus.
