Hello guys,
I am thinking of purchasing a One M9 but not really sure yet. I need you guys, owners of this beauty, to convince me why I should or why I should not get it. I have had a M8 before it got stolen from me and I absolutely loved it, it was the best device I owned and I still miss it after a year. I now have a OnePlus One but the M9 is so tempting..please share all your thoughts/experiences with the M9 and help me decide! I've read a lot of reviews and threads here on XDA but some were really old and most of the issues in there that disturbed me got fixed, such as overheating etc (I believe).
Thank you in advance!

I still think it holds true today. If you loved the M8 and aren't expecting the M9 to be vastly different, you'll really love the M9. I'd occasionally get lag with the M8 and the camera was not great. M9 fixed those issues for me. Battery life on M9 might not (PROBABLY ISN'T) as good, but it's good enough for me.

Thank you sir, waiting for more replies!
EDIT: Is there a full guide for rooting, getting S-Off, updating firmware and such things? I know it's kinda tricky with the CIDs and all those things..kinda out of the loop after a year of not owning a HTC device.
EDIT2: Will I be able to relock & regain warranty if I unlock the device with Sunshine rather than HTCDev? Or is there another way to do this?

Yeah, there are a few guides floating around in the general section. It's not hard, especially if you're planning to S-off. Right now, you have to unlock through HTC dev, then root, then S-off with sunshine. It's no longer possible for sunshine to temp root so you can S-off before you unlock the boot loader.
I went from the M7 to the M9 and couldn't love this phone any more. If you liked the M8, you should like the M9 as long as you're not expecting a big jump in performance. I looked at the M8 and it left me cold, but the tweaks on this version convinced me.
I looked at the OPO and concluded I didn't want such a big phone. I'm not sure you'll notice a difference in performance as the specs are pretty similar.
If you get it, it's worth going s-off and updating to the latest firmware, which fixes the problems people have complained about. There are charging and throttling issues on earlier firmware.

+1 the M9 is a fantastic replacement for the M7, and if you loved the M8 then its a no brainer
coming from OPO to M9, at first M9 felt so small(I hated big phones before OPO). But actually 5 inch is the best size..one hand operation is possible again.
m9 feels absolutely premium compared to OPO.
m9 had many many issues when it was launched. but after firmware updates, they all are fixed.
battery wise i can say it is at par with OPO now with custom ROM installed. i get a very decent SOT.
camera has potential to get very good clicks.
audio quality through headphones is also good compared to OPO output.
go for m9 if you like its premium looks, a smaller and perfect screen size, far better customer service.

Thanks, I was looking forward to a review from a OPO owner. I am waiting for another week to see what the OP2 has to offer but mostly likely I'm going for the M9, we will see soon enough!
Thanks to everyone who replied.
I think the question to be asked is "why not?".
Having owned HTC devices starting with the TyTNII to HD2, Inspire, M7 and now M9, I have become very comfortable with Sense. That, along with HTC's superior build quality make me very reluctant to jump ship. I found the GS6 to feel less than robust, despite their dramatic leap in construction quality - it still just didn't feel like a premium phone, and their interface is still obtuse. Also, if you plan on running Xposed for mods such as Xprivacy, the M9 definitely makes that easier.
I know that HTC is the phone company that phone fanboys love to hate. It seems they've become the industry's whipping horse and focus of a lot of criticism, some of which is well deserved, such as the camera lacking OIS and perhaps not having the software ready for release. Other criticism is not well deserved, and I wonder if those same people who comment about the "recycled design" would say the same thing about a Porsche 911 which hasn't changed much in terms of general styling for decades. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Anyway, I'm thrilled with this phone now with the latest firmware and LP5.1 and I'm sure you'd be very happy with it based on your previous experience.
Hope this helps.

I agree with everything Mr. Cat just said, but will add that for the price the M9 is selling for on Swappa should make it extra enticing. New - resale AT&T model for $445. sheesh.

Poor first impressions have really hurt it.
If you still had an m8 id say keep it and wait for the m9 to drop in price but seeing as it got swiped by some sticky fingered turd the m9 is a good fast device but the screen is crap, the camera is mediocre and the heat issues are serious.
I use waze while driving and the phone bakes to the point where its difficult to keep hold of it for more than a minute or two (when the journey has finished!).

I come from the OPO and I have never loved a device so much... (im talking about the opo). Only reason I switched was cuz I randomly started getting touchscreen issues with my OPO, I'm a fast typer so I couldn't deal with it anymore and nothing got it fixed. Sold it and got this phone, the M9. I did have my OPO for about six months so I can actually talk about it.
Battery is not nearly as good as the OPO in my opinion. I always had 5-7 on screen time, I now barely get 3.5... Aside from that I can't complain about performance, but development here is not as big as the OPO, there were some big things on that forum boy let me tell you. I'm not as happy as I was with the OPO, but this is not a bad phone, don't get me wrong.

Development here will pick up if/when the CM team gets the camera and a few of the other kinks worked out. Most of the main sense developers are already here, but AOSP was always going to be a slow process.

A completely open environment like Nexus or OPO, especially one that launches with CM, is always going to have more development going on than a proprietary one. Development for the M9 could be better, but it's comparable to other flagship phones right now.
Now with the OnePlus 2 being launched I'm even more confused. I don't mind the "slow" development as I will be using ARHD if I get the M9..or maybe a new ROM when CM comes for the M9. Gonna wait a little more and see what convinces me more but I find the M9 more attractive

I upgraded from the M7, you can't go wrong either way. The M7 was the best smart phone I've ever had but I like to have the latest things so I took the plunge for the M8. The two very small gripes with my M7 were the purple tint issue and the battery life. After 8+ months of ownership I was only just getting a day on battery if that on light/moderate usage. The M8s battery life is 40% better than the M7 so that is a huge increase. The purple tint issue has also been fixed. It's not a huge upgrade and if I were tight on money I could EASILY of kept the M7 till 2015. Your choice. This might get locked as it's a phone comparison thread but hey ho.
Thanks for your thoughts.. I agree about the battery. 12 months on I can certainly see the decay.
I hope this doesn't get locked as it is useful to those like me who have the previous model and are debating to upgrading to the next generation.
I understand comparison threads being closed, but this is discussing the same manufacturer and practically the same model, just the upgraded version. Normally flame wars happen between other OEMs like Samsung and HTC.
I imagine this thread would be useful to others who are undecided on wether to splash out of commit for another 2 years on a device that may in the real world seem just the same as the M7
Hope we can keep this discussion going!:fingers-crossed:

Same as me. I had a play with one at the O2 store today. Gotta say... its the finest looking mobile phone I've ever seen. Gun metal grey is defo the best. I'm thinking of getting one from Three tomorrow on PAYG. £459!
but I have an M7 and its in perfect condition and will have Sense 6 soon making almost the same as the M8. Is it really worth spending the money???
Have a DE on order. Loved the M7. Best phone I have ever had. Can't wait for the phone to arrive.
Yes that's exactly my predicament.. £470 for.... Looks.. which you can't see when your holding it.. a depth sensor.. and that's it really... Isn't it?
And Sense 6 coming soon.. well already here really, had it on yesterday for a while, but not officially out yet.
But.. I do want one. That's a lot of nice things I could get for my motorbike though lol.
I have T-Mobile JUMP, so I'll be trading in my M7 for the M8.
As of right now, I have another $300 to go before my M7 is paid off. On ebay, a used M7 goes for around $250.. and then you minus some shipping and ebay fees.
Definitely not worth it for me to just stick with the M7.

How exactly does JUMP work? I'm eligible for it now as well but obviously haven't used it before. Do you ever get to have both phones at the same time so you can transfer information, or do you literally go in the store with one phone and come out with the other?

You have to backup everything because you will never have both phones at the same time. You literally bring the old phone to the store, they inspect it for screen and water damage, they set up the new phone for you (they'll set up your GMail and sync the two for you) and then you walk out.
And yes, as soon as T-Mobile gets it in store, I'm using my JUMP for it. There's no reason not to since if I don't like it I can just use my second JUMP credit to trade it for something else (which I will consider doing when the 805 devices roll out).

That makes sense. What if you do the process online? I'm wondering if they would send you the device then you could take your current device to the store to trade it in.

It's not just the mah that matters. You have the more efficient SoC, better optimizations... Stuff like that.

Not sure if its actually 40% (could you link to source?) but I've definitely read that the M8 gets better battery life than the M7 from several reviews.
Well, i will get mine soon. Thanks to all SkyDragon user via donation! Max, butterfly, hox and m7 users.
I couldn't keep my hox, should sell it to get m7... But this time its different, i keep m7 and will get m8.
Why? Mostly for cooking reasons. All my team has m7 and today 6 of them has also m8.
The rest will jump soon too, we are like 40 hahaha.
I love design, sense 6, well.. All.
Doesn't mean m7 is old, i still very happy with it. But also want to taste new m8. Im curious about dot case and sense 6.
About battery, m7 got good battery, screen, best devs and roms. And soon m8.
Btw,i will release our first SkyDragon rom soon, if someone wants to join my team to be tester, or has code skilz or theming skilz, just pm.
Well done HTC, again best phone of the year! No doubt.
Have to state that. If i should keep my m7 only, im Happy too as we are getting Sense 6 soon, also dot cover
Literally just upgraded from the M7 two hours ago. Wow. Seriously just wow. I just tried out the camera, the effects are really cool. It is super mega smooth. The new SoC is very power efficient and fast. Definitely feels better too. Also glad to be rid of the purple camera tint.
Did no-one buy this phone or is it too new?
If its the former we need to get a PSA going about how great the phone is so people buy more, if its the latter I suppose we should just wait...
I think it's just because it's relatively new. It only went on sale this week in my country. But hey, if you want to spice things up, go ahead and post something!

It's new and in the US here its only available on one carrier and most people are waiting on the M9 flagship phone. We also don't have s-off so we cant do any fun mods really. Honestly it's a M8 in plastic with water proofing and different cameras so its nothing groundbreaking. I wouldnt expect much out of this fourm

Yes, it's almost M8, so it would be pretty easy to port some M8 ROMs to the EYE, GPE ROM for example. I would do that if I had any tutorials. But I haven't found any.
Im waiting also on some custom rom,but nobody take care till now about this device.I will try to ask Venom team cos they make the best custom roms.

I wouldnt say it's easy by any means especially since most HTC Devs on this site do not own the device and with the different cameras come different drivers it makes things harder.

Yeah I thought the same thing but for the moment in my option, due to the fact that it is an At&t exculsive it will take some time before people outside this carrier obtains it. Unless, you are like me and decided to purchase it unlocked; which is not a bad idea if you ask me. Additionally, since this phone is new and HTC has promised that it will be supporting devices like the M8,Desire EYE and new devices with updates and fixes for the next 2 years I personally will not be bothered with rooting my device. Besides, we are soon due to get Android 5.0 directly from the source so why not wait and enjoy the direct updates from HTC because after 2.5 years we will be on our own.
After 2 years, which I would most likely still have it in excellent order will then decide to root it and add a custom rom on it.
But dont worry, you are not alone in buying this phone. It is an amazing device that in more cases than one is much better,on the same spec stage and cheaper than the M8.
I recently received my desire eye. I won it on HTC elevate though. Awesome program. But I see that it isn't a very popular option. Since I'm on Verizon mine will be used mostly as a WiFi device. I can day that once lollipop gets here you will really like it. Dttw works perfectly

Yes this is an absolutely amazing phone, I had a Moto X, then tried WinMo with the Nokia 930 and then went to thi, its the best phone ive ever owned, brilliant performance, great battery life, awesome connectivity, the only downside could be its physical size, not a problem for a big guy like myself but if you have small hands and small pockets you wont find this phone easy to use.

Thanks for the reply. Got my iPhone up for sale on Swappa and will try to find one if it sells. Seem to be extremely hard to find used. May have to give up on getting one and go with something else.
Hello all,
I'd like to start but discussing how I ended up getting this amazing phone. My LG G2, after screwing me over multiple times in the past, has finally decided to come to an abrupt end. Don't get me wrong G2 users, it's a beautiful device, but under the hood it can be a major pain in the butt to deal with. So my G2 failed around 3 weeks ago, and I found myself without a spare smartphone and decided to finally take the plunge for something new. After countless evenings of reading and debating, I decided to go with the HTC One M8, being the favorite smartphone of many critics. The 4MP camera put me off at first, and I would not buy it because of its "low end camera". Then I stumbled upon the Pictures taken with the M8 thread. What I learned was that with the right settings and a bit of patience, this 4 MP camera could easily outperform my LG G2 's camera. Resolution isn't everything folks. So at last I decided to buy this gorgeous looking device. Not being a fan of paying almost double for your device via AT&T Next, I began to hunt unlocked versions of it online, and rejoiced when I saw it being sold by HTC for as little as $500!
I instantly ordered the unlocked variation. Had I had the choice now, I would have taken the developer edition, but, oh well. I can easily unlock the bootloader myself. So the phone arrived a little over 2 weeks ago and I have loved it ever since receiving it! The build quality is simply stunning, and Sence is probablythe smoothest OEM developed launcher I have ever used. My only gripe so far is the battery life due to a bit of heating, but this seems to be a general Lollipop bug. I'll either wait for Android 5.1 or till Sunshine S-OFF is updated to work with ART runtime to see how it performs on Kit-Kat (I upgraded to Lollipop soon as I received it, followed by a Factory Reset for good measure.)
Overall, I love this phone! It's nothing short of amazing. The one thing troubling me now is the M9. It's been released and is being sold for $660 if I remember correctly. I can still technically find a good reason to send this one back, put $160-200 on top for the M9, and take that instead. But is it worth doing that? As of the moment it seems that the M9 is just slightly faster and has a better camera. I myself am actually not to much of a fan of the sticking out camera though. I love the uniform round back of the M8. Also, I should add, that extra money would probably be better spent elsewhere, like going towards a new monitor, which I actually NEED.
So what do you all think? Am I going to regret not having spent the extra money for an M9? The M8 seems perfect for me as is. I'm not really sure what I should do at the moment...
Thank you all for the read!!!
EDIT: It seems sunshine has now been updated to work with 5.0.1. Awesome!
Everyone knew the M9 was coming, so I don't know why that debate didn't occur to you before buying the M8.
The M9 having a "better" camera may be debatable. Reviews on the camera are pretty disappointing so far. Don't fall back into the trap of megapixel chasing. Just because the M9 has a 20 MP camara, doesn't make it "better".
And in fact Anandtech (which has more technical and objective reviews than most other websites) while they don't have a full review up yet, upon initial review goes as far as to suggest the M8 may actually be better than the M9!
http://www.anandtech.com/show/9102/the-htc-one-m9-review-part-1
With the M9, you have an incremental increase in chipset specs, a "different" camera (while not necessarily better, at least not a slam-dunk), and otherwise almost identical to the M8. So identical, HTC's own marketing folks can't tell the two apart!
http://phandroid.com/2015/03/26/htc-one-m9-m8-flub
With the M8, you have s-off, a strong existing XDA community, and a nice selection of ROMs. Might be worthwhile to save your money for the next flagship.
On the other hand, a lot of folks (devs included) will probably be jumping ship to go to the M9 in the coming weeks/months.
I'm not sure if you made the wrong move or not, but one of my work colleagues got the M9 today and we were playing around with it. We both thought that the camera isn't a major improvement. That would of been my only reason to upgrade... Speed-wise, i'm using a custom GPE rom and that almost holds up to stock on the M9. The M9 is a amazing phone, but this is the first time in 6 years that i'm not disappointed to be on a 2 year contract. I'll happily go another year using my M8.
Hope that helps.
I was literally in the same boat. I knew that M9 was coming but you gotta think about the price too. You would have paid more for a M9 right now and I don't think those extra money is actually worth it. Is it a bad phone? No, but I think last years flagships are good enough right now to last you a few years more without hiccups. I also find that if you have the M8 already there is no need to upgrade to the M9. Simply not a big difference to warrant the upgrade
Thank you all for your input! Yes, I was aware that the M9 was coming, but I was in need of a smartphone, and did not expect the M9 to come out soon as it did. I'll probably stick with the M8 then. Can't wait to root this thing and flash away!
I too am almost in a similar boat. I currently own an LG G3 and am currently relatively unsatisfied with it. Battery life is pretty poor, it is warm a lot of the time and the UI is horrible. I personally want something that screams quality and the One M8 seems like my best bet for around £300, provided I sell my G3. Personally I'm not feeling all too fussed by the M9 as most of the software features will likely be portable to the M8. All that I am worried for is the update support. Realistically the M8 should only be getting updates for one more year, which to me does not sound great. But given the GPE, does anybody reckon this phone has a couple more years of life?

It should be around another year or so but if I'm you, getting the M8 would be well worth as compared to the M9

Ouch dude that sucks. My friend got himself the G3 a few months ago and sold it instantly. It was plagued with all sorts of issues. After the G2, I'll never buy an LG phone again.
I realize I'm pretty much asking to get flamed here....
Got my HTC 10 in the mail yesterday. Unboxed it - sure is pretty. Powered it on and very quickly encountered truckloads of dissappointment.
I'm coming off the HTC M8, loved that phone for 2 years - but the screen is falling apart (my son hit it with a rock....). I'd heard that the M9 was kind of a bust - and that the 10 was considered to be a major course correction after that.
But I can't stand News Republic managing my BlinkFeed, and I can't stand Picassa managing my photos. And I need my drop down quick settings.
Long story short, if I keep it, I'm definitely going to have to root it and put Viper10 on it.
Thing is, if I'm going to have to go through all the work - why not save $300 and just get an M9? Sure I'd lose some processing power, but I'm pretty sure Viper runs well enough on it and that it would meet my needs for the next two years.
Or would it?
If any of you guys came off the M9 and went to the 10, I'd love to hear your perspective.
Thanks!

would suggest you to take a look around in m9 and m10 forums to decide from a development aspect which is better...
both won't come close to m8's development because its a 2year old device and got a gpe edition...
I think what I'm mostly looking for is a comparison between noticeable performance. I ran ViperOne on my M8 the entire time, so it's not like I am looking for specialty dev stuff. Just wondering if the performance offered by the 10 is worth the extra $300.
The biggest difference for me is battery life. I'm a very light user: texting, internet, social media, but my 10 gets much more battery life throughout the day. Plus, do we know if HTC added News Republic and did away with HTC Gallery with Android 6 on the M9? You might be stuck with it anyway.
I am okay with the 10 for now, not the worst device coming from the s7 with no root or development. I have the moto x pure 2015, kicks ass with cm13. I am waiting for the note 7, if not root, will wait for the nexus. HTC promised that it is a light skin, but really, it feels like htc skinned more with some bloat to make it look like it is a pure android experience but it i not. (thinking about aosp or cm13 ) I am using LeeDroid which I find it suits me better than Viper (opinion). But there is no way on the planet the software experience is close to a pure android.

Ditto, ultimately, i am disappointed as well, i have an m7, m8 ,m9, and 10... And the m8 was by far, and i mean far, the best phone i ever had. What i am hoping is that these new nexus devices use a similar build tree to the 10, and maybe we can cross port GPE, possibly even fully working CM. Hopes and Dreams

Now you got me wondering if I should just go out and find another M8.
As someone who has used an m8 many times (sister's lo) but has not owned one(no nostalgic factor) and has bought a HTC 10, I feel like the 10 is better in every way except speaker loudness. I understand your problems but they seem minor software things that HTC has decided to change. so, as you have said, I would get a rom on it. The M8 is good but it's time to move on in my opinion; It was the best phone for its time but that's not true any longer.
An M9 is fine but the 10 is, again, better in every way (hardware wise). The main problems with it are the heat when you are doing anything intensive and the battery life. Again your issues are software related so i'd root and then make a decision if you still don't enjoy it.

Well I can't tell you to keep the 10 or find another M8, but I do hear you. As far as your Blinkfeed issue is concerned this should fix that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/htc-blinkfeed-plugins-devices-08-03-2015-t3049438
And when you install Viper10 just "Uninstall" Googles' Picassa and "Install" HTC's Gallery in "Aroma". Make sure to "Desense" in Aroma also so the new Blinkfeed files you install will take. :good:

I'm sure I'm in the minority here but I liked the M9 slightly more than the M8. M8 had better battery life for sure, but M9 was faster with a better camera, but I found there's a little learning curve to get the best camera results.
I like the 10 way more than both of those, though. My M9 had News Republic, so I'm not sure how you've avoided that with the M8. If you're into custom roms, Ice has the option to use the HTC gallery app (in fact, you might even be able to download it from play store). And you also have the option to make quick settings look a little bit more like sense 7. See attached.

FYI: I was on the M8. My screen cracked a few months ago so I bought another M8, I looked at the M9 first but from everything I was reading it had too many issues. Had a few issues getting the M8 activated with Sprint so I just gave up and sold the new M8 & bought the 10. Since I've been with Sprint for more than 20+ years they gave it to me for $200 (They gave me the M8 for $100 a couple years ago). But anyway, I love the 10. No complaints here, just stay away from the M9. I can recommend the M8 also, I LOVE that phone Even though my screen was cracked I had decided to just keep using it after my activation issues with the New M8 I had just bought. I would have too except it starting have battery issues, I was only getting about 2 hours of usage, it would only last for 14 hours just sitting on the table with me not even touching it. It always just cuts off right at 50% battery power. If I'm using it it would shut down at 50%. BUT if I let it just sit there as it reached that 50% threshold it would NOT shut down! It would actually stay on until I actually turned the screen on THEN it would shut down. I would actually let it sit there for hours after I knew it has passed the 50% mark just to test it. I think the lowest I caught it was at 5%, but about 15 seconds after I turn the screen on it shuts down. If I could've replaced the battery I would've definitely kept using it. So in summation If you can find a cheap M8 I would stick with that & ViperOneM8, if not go with the 10. Just don't get the M9, it's NOT worth the upgrade.
I have the 10 and feel it's a very nice upgrade over the M7 and 8 for sure. Never had the 9 so can't give an opinion there. I dislike the skins many manufacturers put over Android. One way I deal with it is to install the Google now launcher. Almost makes me feel like I'm using a nexus device. And I have owned every nexus device made so I feel I can make that judgement. Of course, it's up to you to make the final decision.
It's funny. I've had all of them, and I rank them as 10, M7, M9, M8. For some reason, the M8 felt weird to me? I just couldn't get used to it. But like someone mentioned before, the M8 is not slated to get Android 6.
Moderator Information,

Yes, it's worth upgrading.
I have HTC since the Desire. Sold the M9 and stuck with M8. Water damaged, bought 2nd M8... Love it to death. What a phone for its time. Still sits on ky desk. I have to salute the legend when I wake up.
10 goes back from M8 in some ways but improves in most ways. Battery life is good enough, too, altho not spectacular. You'll enjoy it.
Camera etc could be a lot better but even then, it is noticeably better than the previous two. Screen certainly is.

THAT was flaming? Wow. It was meant to be good natured on my end. My apologies.
Anyway, like I said, the op might need to check if the M8 will get Android N, if that's important to them because I think I saw on HTC's website that it's not currently slated to.
OK guys, I think you've convinced me just to bite the bullet, keep the 10, and root it. Thanks so much for your help!

Hello, fellow members i'm planning on making a switch of brand so i want to either get the HTC M8 Or the HTC M9 but my friend use to have both and he said the M9 would over-heat on him but he was running stock firmware and I run custom so I am wondering if the HTC M9 over-heats running custom firmware. If I could get some input on the two devices that would be nice. Also my judgment would be how music sounds on the two devices. I definitely want to get one of the two devices just need some input before I make a judgment call on witch one to get. Also iv never owned a HTC iv had Motorola for the most part since way back in the original moto droid days, so if someone could explain the s-off thing as in before or after root and does s-off unlock bootloader. Thanks, and everyone have a Happy Christmas and Happy New Year.

Wow. You have a lot to cover. Not sure I can address all of your questions but I'm happy to offer my opinions. I'm a root user so my perspective may not be very useful to you if you intend to stay stock. If rooting is your plan, either device is a great choice and I strongly recommend TeamVenom's ViperOne ROMs.
Currently, I have both the M8 and M9. They are very similar with the main exceptions being the M9's vastly superior processor, camera and updated OS. I'm very partial to HTC. In fact, Every smartphone I've owned from day-one has been HTC. That's mainly due to how I was introduced to smartphones in the first place. When I started asking around, a coworker spoke very highly of HTC and specifically mentioned how they were more independent than other brands which allowed for more customization. He also said for that same reason, they were easier to root and got a lot more attention from developers as a result. So, in addition to being introduced to HTC, I was introduced to rooting at the same time. I've rooted every one since and can't imagine having a stock phone. I got the M8 in November of 2014 and it's been the best one yet by far. I couldn't have been happier with it.
To get to your primary question, one consistent trait that I've seen with all of my HTC devices is that they do have a tendency to get hot during downloads and when using GPS. Scary hot while while doing either and charging simultaneously. The M9 is particularly bad with this, which is no doubt due to that octo-core processor. The upside is the metal housing which acts as a heatsink, allowing for rapid cooling. The fact that the heat is so noticeable is evidence of this and a very good thing.
Other than the heat issue, I've been pretty happy with the battery life on the M8. However, I don't use my phone for music or streaming videos very much, but I do up/download files a fair amount. The battery will take a pretty good hit if I'm doing a lot of that. Because I don't really use my phone for music, I can't say much on that but what little I have listen to has sounded as good as my iPod (the only Apple product I own). What I can say in regards to sound is the external speakers are nothing short of phenomenal. Full-on stereo with an almost surround-sound quality. Definitely the best exterior sound quality available.
Though I've had the M9 for about six weeks, I haven't started using it full time yet. My M8 is still in great condition and perfectly functional. I had to replace the battery a couple months ago which is what prompted me to start looking for a new device. At first, I wasn't sure the M8 would survive the battery replacement, but it did and it's been better than ever. So, in the meantime, tweaking and modding the M9 to get it closer to my M8 has been a kind of side project.
As for brand vs brand, my wife has the Samsung Galaxy S5, so I can make a fair comparison to that. I've also had opportunities to explore iPhone, Motorola and LG devices. In general, even without root, I think HTC just does a better job with UI. Everything is laid out in a practical and sensible manner. The S5 seems like it was designed for a child. In addition to its cartoon-style UI, it's like they went out of their way to hide settings and features. Then, what little options it has are so limited that you really can't do anything with it.
So, that's pretty much all I have to offer. If you have more specific questions, I'll be happy to tell you what I can so don't hesitate to ask.

I have been rooting and roming since the first moto droid. That is the first device for android by the way. It is OG. So iv been doing this for a long time. I'm bidding on an M9 as I type this its at 25 bucks. If it goes past 70 I'm gonna get the m8 for 65 from a guy who lives by me. I been messaging him on offer up. On the M9 does it heat for long period of time while in the middle of using it and then it cools down or does it cool down after you stop using for a while for it to do so.? Also I can figure out how to do after I read it but I just want to know if s-off is what unlocks the bootloader and if so do you root first or after you s-off. Thanks for reply and hope you had a good Christmas.

The M8 is a GREAT phone for rooting. The M9 is good but comes up a bit short in the customization department compared to my M8. I am still considering getting another M8 to mess with. I'd like to see just how far I can push it with mods and updates.
I've been tinkering with the M9 and going back and forth to my M8 all day. Every time I scroll through the ViperOne settings on my M8, it blows me away how much you can do with it. It's almost overwhelming. The Venom guys trimmed ViperOneM9 down quite a bit. Maybe about 15-20% of the options were lost between M8 and M9. Could be that they didn't have a choice and had to do it to maintain compatibility with later android versions. ViperOne is still a VERY good ROM through.
What I've noticed with the M9 is that it will heat up very quickly depending on what you're doing. Large downloads and running long operations in recovery seem to push it the hardest. Once it's done, it will cool down fairly quickly on its own but you pretty much have to put it down until it does. If you keep using after the download or recovery operation, it will cool down eventually but takes much longer.
When I was first setting up the M9 and doing all the OTA updates, it would get really hot. Fast as all get-out but it would literally cook. I started putting it on a mini tabletop fan during those large OTA downloads and that really did the trick. Which comes back to the point I made about the metal housing. It draws all the heat out and with just a little external cooling in extreme situations, it does just fine.

So your opinion would be to get the m8 from what it sounds like to me?
Yes. The M8 is a bit dated but highly developed. I really haven't done enough with the M9 to give you a solid assessment on it by itself. I can tell you that based on what I do know, the M8 seems more refined and definitely has more options.

Sorry. I noticed that I didn't answer your question about s-off unlocking and rooting. I'm probably going to cover stuff you already know so I'll apologize in advance.
I don't know the "why" as much as the "how". From my very first device (HTC Incredible) I have always done S-off. In those days, Unrevoked was the most popular if not the only way to do it. I don't think that you need S-off to root but you definitely have to be unlocked to install a custom recovery such as TWRP. S-Off gives you more options and makes root more "permanent". Permanent meaning that almost nothing can break or remove it.
The safest and most reliable unlock/s-off method that I found was Sunshine. I read about others but they all had issues. The only drawback is that its not free. $25 when I did my M9. The plus is that its pretty much guaranteed to work. There's a built-in test that you run to see if it will do the job. If the test is successful, you pay and run the app to unlock/s-off. It only takes a couple minutes. The other positive is that it's reusable on the same device. So, if something somehow manages to relock your device, you can run Sunshine again at no additional cost.
Oh, and one more thing... It may be of no surprise to you that getting a "new" or even "new other" M8/M9 on Ebay is impossible. I bought three from different sellers that all claimed emphatically that the devices were "brand new" and never activated. I contacted HTC on each one and all had activation dates within a few months of the release. Though minor, all had obvious wear and tear. Two from Amazon sold as brand new looked mint but also had previous activation dates, plus serial number mismatches which suggested that the housing was replaced. I finally found an M9 on Amazon that was actually new.
With the way the M8/M9 tends to get hot, I wouldn't chance a used device out of fear that the previous owner let it overheat regularly. It's a battery killer at the very least. So, if you trust the guy down the street, that's definitely the way to go.

25$ when I did my M8. The plus is that its pretty much guaranteed to work. There's a built-in test that you run to see if it will do the job. If the test is successful, you pay and run the app to unlock/s-off. I had to use the sunshine app on my Moto HD after a certain update the methods didn't work. Sunshine is for HtC to cool. I bidded on an M8 labeled used in fair condition and it looked pretty decent in the pics. I got for 15 bucks cheaper than the guy near me. It was on ebay. On the Moto HD I had to be rooted in order for sunshine to work is that the case for the HTC M8 or does it work without root or do you have to have temporary root, and also how do you tell if your s-off worked does it say in the bootloader or some special black screen you boot to. Like for instance on the motorolas I would get a number 3 for unlock and 0 would mean locked that's how I knew it worked.

Both my M8 and M9 were completely out-of-the-box stock when I used Sunshine. I believe it automatically temp roots, then runs the unlock/s-off operation. The bootloader will say *** UNLOCKED *** "M8_WLV PVT SHIP S-OFF" at the top when you're all done.

I left a thread in the Verizon HTC M8 but no answers. I don't see any roms that are nogout in that forum. Maybe you can answer the question. Is there any nogout roms for the HtC M8?

I don't know but probably not. ViperOneM8 6.1.0 is M based. Most devs probably moved on to the M9 or later before N was released.

So, I'm assuming that you got your M8? If so, how do you like it?
I've been using my M9 full time for the last few weeks now. With ViperOne, it has a few cool features that the M8 doesn't have but they don't quite make up for all the little tweaks that I had to give up. Even though the M9's performance is a bit snappier, I still find myself missing my M8.
In going back and forth between the two, I found that there were Venom Hub mods for the M8 that are no longer available. One example that I really miss is one called NavBar Mods. It gives you a bunch of options like swapping the back and recent buttons, button themes and backgrounds. I think the ViperDark theme and accent color options for ViperOne are also not there anymore. There might be one or two others that I have that you can't get now. If you decide to go with ViperOne, let me know and I can post some stuff for you. I have a ton of resources that I have accumulated over the years.

Iv been flashing custom roms. Im open to trying what you got for the m8. So is the m9 better. I will try your links. I'm wondering if I shouldv gotten the m9. How's the camera on the m9. The m8 camera ain't all that great but I got a decent look out the camera after tinkering with camera app.
