Hello,
I have a Tmo M8 converted to GPE. I recently found that the caller cannot hear me when I turn on the speaker. Upon searching around for the issue, I found this diagnostics test *#*#3242#*#* I performed the audio test and the test for Mic 2 fails as I cannot hear anything that was recorded in the test.
Clearly this is a hardware issue and the phone uses Mic 2 for noise when I switch on the speaker, it used to work on Kitkat, but I doubt the OS update is the issue here.
Anyway my question is What can I do to restore/repair Mic2 without turning it into the Manufacturer? If I can't do anything, is there a way to disable the Mic2 entirely?

I wouldn't rule out the 5.01 update as the issue. I have a stock GPE that has lost the ability to record calls after the OTA. Something has certainly changed in the update that affects the Mic.

Hi all,
I'm using a Galaxy Nexus on Rogers in Canada.
I'm having trouble with the bottom microphone being very quiet and muffled.
Unfortunately I'm leaning towards this being a hardware issue because:
The volume is normal and clear when recording a video and when on speakerphone (which I understand uses the top microphone)
The volume is normal when using a headset
The volume is quiet and muffled when recording in "Voice Recorder" which uses the bottom microphone.
But I thought I'd check if anyone else has had this problem before and has any ideas for a solution other a full wipe (which i'll reluctantly try next) or returning the phone.
Thanks,
-Peter
i have similar problem. everything is fine on speakerphone or during video recording. but when it's a call or audio recording it's just pops, cracks, noise.
I have had this happen a few times on calls. If I reboot my phone it goes away. It hasn't happened in a month or so. I'm running AOKP build 29 at the moment.

I have been getting this problem on the last four builds of AOKP.
People always complain that they can hardly understand when I speak.

I've got exactly same problem... it's annoying, I have this phone for over 6 months and was hoping there will be a fix for it... it also seems to be only a case when talking on the phone.
when recording all seems fine... so it must be a software problem or smth... i'm looking for a solution for a long time, checked lot's of ROMS... starting to be unbearable for me and especially for ppl on the other side

Just bumping this topic.
Did any of you manage to fix this. I have replaced the entire usb/microphone assembly on the phone from a new part, and i still get muffled voice calls through the main mic. Works fine on speakerphone or secondary mic.
I have tried many stock variations, and am attempting to revert to my stock stock telstra yakjuxw build (trying to find a copy atm).
Bump the only thing I have to possibly is that it appears more frequently with HTC DNA and landlines when I call feature phones I'm OK.

I have same problem, and I can not fix it. It was in stock Android 4.2.2. I try different ROM on Android 4.2.2, and 4.1.2 but no result.
Hey everyone,
I also have problem with my mic, thought i would bump this post. maybe someone has found something new.

I fix my problem. The hole for the microphone is very small, and In my case, it was totally "dirty". So I just cleaned it, and all works

I use toothpick, maybe this way is not very smart but... Using toothpicks I just cleaned microphone hole. In my case microphone hole was fully packed. I also find thread on reddit about this problem, one of answer is:
I believe I may have a fix for future users who search through this forum. I read that cleaning out your headphone port can resolve this issue. If there is lint or anything in there, then it tricks the phone into thinking that the aux is plugged in and your voice won't be picked up the the mic, but the non-existent headphones. Turning on speakerphone re-routes the mic from the aux to the handset mic.

So I'm having an issue with my T-Mobile M8 regarding the microphone and muting during calls. It doesn't mute the mic during phone calls but then if I put the phone on speaker phone the other person can't hear me anymore. The issue started once I flashed AOSP ROMs I've tried 3 different ones and its present on all of them. Anyone know of a fix or what the issue is? I tried third party dialers and that didn't work either.

Known issue with aosp. Only fix thus far is to flash back to sense.
I had this issue too but then I went ahead and did the gpe conversion. I'm no longer having that problem. But now if I put the phone to my right ear the volume drops drastically. Can't win em all I guess.
Just got my Verizon G3 yesterday. I have it rooted and have Xposed and G3 Tweaksbox. I don't think I froze anything that would have to do with the mic/speakerphone.
When my speaker is on, my mic doesn't work.
Mic works fine otherwise, so it can't be a hardware issue.
Any ideas?
I disabled all xposed modules and unfroze all apps and same thing.
Can someone confirm they don't have this issue on a Verizon phone?
I really don't want to factory reset already.
Could someone just test this out and let me know if you don't have the issue?
Just make a call, turn on the speaker and see if the party on the other end can hear you talking.
Be best if it's someone with a Verizon phone.
If it works for someone else on Verizon, I guess I'll go with the factory reset. The phone has only been out a few days, I guess it's possible it's a bug and I'm just the first person who noticed it, but I doubt it.
I did a factory reset and it's still not working.
I did take off my case and now there's some audio, but it's all a low static. I call a vm I have and start talking with speaker off and it's fine, then I turn speaker on and I get all static and hissing and can't hear myself at all.
I don't see how it could be hardware, but I guess it's possible. Sure seems like a system bug, but someone in the Verizon forum reported it's working, so I guess not.
Flashed back to factory image and same problem.
I guess it's my hardware.
Replaced phone today and all is good. I guess defective hardware.
It must have a different mic for when using speakerphone vs when not.
Hi friends,
Can you guys confirm that noise cancellation is inactive in OOS 3.2.7 stock, unrooted, locked or do I have an isolated issue?
Tinkering around on my phone OP3 in the engineering mode, I did an "echo test". When "Primary mic" is selected, the speaker echoes the taps or my light blows into the respective mic but no such thing happens when I try that with the secondary mic.
Is this a bug in engineering mode for the oneplus 3?
if yes, how can I test for noise cancellation else where?
if no, can I ask for replacement?
Thanks

I dont think its a hardware issue, most probably the mic is just fine. That is the reason why phones usually have dual, sometimes more, microphones to help with noise detection and cancellation, but Op3 still has problem with this mic recordings and noise cancellation. I think this is either due to coding and programming issue with audio threshold of recording or dismissing noise, or due to the fact that microphones do not coordinate together properly which may be due to poor placement of the mic on the back of the phone that can get blocked often. Im interested to see if someone solved this problem, since i have quite a lot of trouble with it, when i use speakerphone in whatsapp call many times i talk but the phone doesnt register it, or it registers it really really low volume. Im not having the same issue when i talk on the normal audio call mode.

Yes, people are saying that noise cancellation might not be working properly.
If that's the case, I'll just want to make sure my hardware is not at fault here since I can't hear anything from the secondary mic.
Can you please try the above in your phone's engineering mode to see if it works for you or not.
Thank you.
So here is the problem. I have tried talking to Google Support and also LG Support. Not under warranty anymore. I have heard several different people mention problems with their mics in calls, be it incoming or outgoing. I have done several things to try to fix this problem; flashing stock firmware and upgrading thru OTA's, clearing cache, rebooting every day, flashing custom roms, modifying the build.prop, opening the device and checking for physical damage. To my knowledge this phone has 3 microphones that are used for actual speaking and background noise reduction. When I opened the device everything looked ok on what I assumed were the mics (the tiny square bits soldered to the logic board at the top and the bottom). I assume these were just going bad and finally gave out on me. Has anyone had any experience getting these fixed or repaired? Is there any software based approach I can look into? I am really tired of using my speakerphone in every call. I assume I am not the only person with this problem.
If anyone can shed some light on this or help in anyway I would appreciate it
Thanks!
I would start by describing the mic issue you are experiencing during voice calls.
Haven't had any myself.
No one can hear me using the microphone, as soon as I switch to speakerphone the other party is able to hear me.
I've read mics can stop functioning if you try and clean the phone with compressed air. As far as fixing or replacing a mic I am unable to provide assistance.
Well rats. Hopefully someone can shed some light on getting this fixed. I do have some soldering experience but I don't even know how this translates via the logic board. Anyone that has more information the help would be awesome. Thank you for your time though previous posters.

I have this problem as well, but also all media volume can't be heard through the speakers. I've personally cleaned and replaced the unit and nothing works, I just have to choose speaker and start talking, else use a headset or a bluetooth mic
Same problem, no solution yet.
Think that is a software/driver/app combination bug.
When Iam in call hardly can anyone hear me, if I cover top mic - then im heard again (proof that bottom mic is working).
Top mic is used to cancel background noise, phone interpret your voice as background noise and volume it down. That way nobody can hear you.
When I cover top mic - no background noise detected and my voice is heard again.
Question is why top mic detect legit voice as background noise?
Same problem here. Can't use microphone normally on any sort of voice call. I have to change to speaker for people to be able to hear me. I'm not sure if I still have warranty so if it's a software problem I might be able to fix it by myself.
