Nexus 5X Microphone - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So here is the problem. I have tried talking to Google Support and also LG Support. Not under warranty anymore. I have heard several different people mention problems with their mics in calls, be it incoming or outgoing. I have done several things to try to fix this problem; flashing stock firmware and upgrading thru OTA's, clearing cache, rebooting every day, flashing custom roms, modifying the build.prop, opening the device and checking for physical damage. To my knowledge this phone has 3 microphones that are used for actual speaking and background noise reduction. When I opened the device everything looked ok on what I assumed were the mics (the tiny square bits soldered to the logic board at the top and the bottom). I assume these were just going bad and finally gave out on me. Has anyone had any experience getting these fixed or repaired? Is there any software based approach I can look into? I am really tired of using my speakerphone in every call. I assume I am not the only person with this problem.
If anyone can shed some light on this or help in anyway I would appreciate it
Thanks!

I would start by describing the mic issue you are experiencing during voice calls.
Haven't had any myself.

No one can hear me using the microphone, as soon as I switch to speakerphone the other party is able to hear me.

I've read mics can stop functioning if you try and clean the phone with compressed air. As far as fixing or replacing a mic I am unable to provide assistance.

Well rats. Hopefully someone can shed some light on getting this fixed. I do have some soldering experience but I don't even know how this translates via the logic board. Anyone that has more information the help would be awesome. Thank you for your time though previous posters.

I have this problem as well, but also all media volume can't be heard through the speakers. I've personally cleaned and replaced the unit and nothing works, I just have to choose speaker and start talking, else use a headset or a bluetooth mic

Same problem, no solution yet.
Think that is a software/driver/app combination bug.
When Iam in call hardly can anyone hear me, if I cover top mic - then im heard again (proof that bottom mic is working).
Top mic is used to cancel background noise, phone interpret your voice as background noise and volume it down. That way nobody can hear you.
When I cover top mic - no background noise detected and my voice is heard again.
Question is why top mic detect legit voice as background noise?

Same problem here. Can't use microphone normally on any sort of voice call. I have to change to speaker for people to be able to hear me. I'm not sure if I still have warranty so if it's a software problem I might be able to fix it by myself.

[Q] In call microphone volume low

The microphone volume is very low on my dhd, people can barely hear me when I call them. The sound is also low when I use a voice recording app. When I plug in an external mic the sound is fine though.
I've been looking for a solution for this for a while, does anyone have any suggestions?
I'm running MIUI 1.5.20, but I had issues when I was using the stock ROM.
Yes i have this problem, often people complain they can't hear me any good.
However if i turn the phone with backside towards me they can hear fine so i guess it's a design fault that they place the microphone at the back, why?
Did anything ever come of this? It's just that I am experiencing the exact same issue

[Q] Mic problem during calls

Hi,
New to this forum. Hope someone can help me out. I've got a new Samsung Galaxy S3 T999 unlocked running Android 4.3, and I've got a problem with the mic. I can hear the other person during calls, but they can't hear me, unless I put my mouth directly over the mic hole and speak into it (so I have to be holding the phone perpendicular to my mouth and speak to the bottom of the phone). Even putting my mouth close to the home button doesn't work; the phone has to be perpendicular to my mouth. I'm getting same issue with Voice recording (ie. no sound recorded unless I put my mouth directly over the mic hole at the bottom), but the phone has no problems picking up audio when I record videos.
Things I've tried that don't work:
- Soft reset, and hard factory reset
- Turning off Motion completely (so proximity sensors everything are blanked out anyway or off)
- Noise reduction is off
- TTY is off
- Turn all sounds off (under Accessibility) is unselected
- Wifi calling is off
- Using speakerphone doesn't work (they can't hear me either)
- No pinky or anything blocking the mic
- I've tried cleaning out the mic hole with a needle but nothing comes out. Not sure if there's a specific way of doing it, but I gently put the needle in and jiggle it about, then withdraw it, but nothing comes out. For reference, I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 that's 2 years old with dust around its mic hole and I have no problems whatsoever with calls on that).
I can't downgrade to any other firmware cos mine is stuck on Android 4.3, and I'm just short of disassembling my phone and seeing if there really is anything physically blocking the mic hole that the needle maybe didn't clear. What I don't get is, if it were really a physical blockage of the mic hole, wouldn't that also affect the audio recording when I take a video? Audio is loud and clear when I record a video and narrate with the phone at half-arm's length from me...
Any help most appreciated!
Thanks!
Maybe something loose that is only connecting when you hold it certain ways. Have you considered replacing the Mic? I believe the part is only a few bucks.

You are not alone having this issue with 4.3. I too have this issue read
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2789017
my thread on same issue and try flashing 4.1.2 Rom in recovery (not to go for full Rom through Odin which may result in brick) and see if your issue remains
I am also on latest bootloader and modem and using 4.1.2 and don't have this issue on older Rom

Do you have headphones plugged in when this issues occurs? I've had issues with people hearing me during a call when I have headphones plugged in; unplugging them solved the problem.
If not, try plugging in headphones when you're in a call and see if that changes anything.

No I don't use head phones and without headphones I am having call issue on all TouchWiz 4.3 roms only on outgoing calls but incoming calls I don't have any issues and also on AOSP Roms also mostly no issue
Thanks for your replies. Sorry have been busy with other things and was using my older S2 since the S3 was giving me problems.
Anil2653, what do you mean by flashing 4.1.2 Rom in recovery? Do I need to root my device to do this? Or what are the specific steps?
TIA!

galaxy s3 i747 in call volume very very low

Since the last two days I have been suffering from a low volume in the internal speaker during calls. The other person's voice is so low that it's almost inaudible. I can hear the caller on speaker though.
Moreover when the answering machine or IVR is on (during a call like if you call a call center and you need to go through the ivr), the volume is better, though not loud as normal but the moment a human starts talking, the volume drops.
I tried testing the hardware by dialing *#0*# and the receiver does emit sufficiently loud sound. So the hardware looks fine.
I also updated my os from 4.3 to 4.4.2 yet no change in the volume of the internal speaker. I also rebooted, reset my phone, still the problem persists.
I'm on a completely stock rom with no modifications or rooting.
Please help.
Sounds like hardware to me, especially if you're full stock. I had the same thing happened before and I swapped the speaker with a spare dead S3 and the problem was fixed. It may sound louder when a machine answers because its not speaking into a mic and background noise doesnt have to be filtered on that end.

Yup I also think it might be a hardware bug, which I'm trying hard to ignore
Btw what do you make of the hardware test that does emit a sufficiently loud sound from the receiver? I dialed *#0*#0 and tested the receiver, which works okay. So I thought it might not be a hardware bug.

Microphone not working during calls

Hello,
Spent all night/morning trying to find a fix to this issue but to no luck!
Basically during calls my voice isn't heard at all (But I can sometimes hear my own echo) (Tried numerous ROMS based on stock and CM) but when I put my device on speakerphone I can be heard. Blowing into the mic during a normal call emits a normal blowing noise down their side of the phone but speaking into the mic directly does nothing.
I've tried cleaning the mic out but again nothing, no debris etc.
I've already sent my phone back due to a raised screen and LG didn't fix it- they sent back photos of a completely different phone (wasn't even a G3) and I've heard nothing since my complaint a few weeks back so I don't want to send it off once again.
Any ideas?
Thank you

Noise cancellation not working properly

Hi friends,
Can you guys confirm that noise cancellation is inactive in OOS 3.2.7 stock, unrooted, locked or do I have an isolated issue?
Tinkering around on my phone OP3 in the engineering mode, I did an "echo test". When "Primary mic" is selected, the speaker echoes the taps or my light blows into the respective mic but no such thing happens when I try that with the secondary mic.
Is this a bug in engineering mode for the oneplus 3?
if yes, how can I test for noise cancellation else where?
if no, can I ask for replacement?
Thanks

I dont think its a hardware issue, most probably the mic is just fine. That is the reason why phones usually have dual, sometimes more, microphones to help with noise detection and cancellation, but Op3 still has problem with this mic recordings and noise cancellation. I think this is either due to coding and programming issue with audio threshold of recording or dismissing noise, or due to the fact that microphones do not coordinate together properly which may be due to poor placement of the mic on the back of the phone that can get blocked often. Im interested to see if someone solved this problem, since i have quite a lot of trouble with it, when i use speakerphone in whatsapp call many times i talk but the phone doesnt register it, or it registers it really really low volume. Im not having the same issue when i talk on the normal audio call mode.

Yes, people are saying that noise cancellation might not be working properly.
If that's the case, I'll just want to make sure my hardware is not at fault here since I can't hear anything from the secondary mic.
Can you please try the above in your phone's engineering mode to see if it works for you or not.
Thank you.
