So I'm having an issue with my T-Mobile M8 regarding the microphone and muting during calls. It doesn't mute the mic during phone calls but then if I put the phone on speaker phone the other person can't hear me anymore. The issue started once I flashed AOSP ROMs I've tried 3 different ones and its present on all of them. Anyone know of a fix or what the issue is? I tried third party dialers and that didn't work either.

Known issue with aosp. Only fix thus far is to flash back to sense.
I had this issue too but then I went ahead and did the gpe conversion. I'm no longer having that problem. But now if I put the phone to my right ear the volume drops drastically. Can't win em all I guess.

First off, forgive me if this was already answered, I tried searching for about 15 minutes before I decided to post this.
As the title states, I'm having an issue with my gnex where I get this high pitched and crackling sound when receiving SOME incoming calls. I can't hear the person, and whenever they speak, the noises get louder so I can't hear them at all.
I think it's software, rather than hardware, since it doesn't happen on every single incoming call. From what I can tell, actually, it's totally random. But if I call the person back it is fine. They could even call me right back and it's fine.
My friend who also got a gnex from a different vzw store has the same issue. His also appears to be random.
Do you guys think it's just network, random phone problems, software issues, or all three?
Info: Verizon Wireless CDMA Galaxy Nexus running fully stock 4.0.2
For the record, I too am experiencing this issue. I also have the issue via 3.5mm jack and during other audio playback. At first I thought it was just my low-quality aux cable I was using in my car, but then I experienced it on a normal call. I was thinking software for this reason too as it happens via the jack as well as speaker... (Also happened watching Netflix, so that covers all audio output but bluetooth.)
Are people on custom roms experiencing this? I wasn't going to root this phone as I didn't see too much of a need, but I will if it will get rid of this issue.

if by crackling you mean it almost sounds like a fax sound, squealing, similar to this description, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1453769 , then yes I had this when I ran stock but now that im running francos, AOKP, and the 4.0.3 radios(which arent included in most 4.0.3 roms), i have not had the problem.
My GF had a problem where her mic was bad, about 50% of the time i got a call from her she would sound muffled, almost as if underewater. She exchanged it at VZW and haven't had any problems since.
Can I get a show of hands for the amount of people who have this issue. I've tried numerous 4.3 & 4.4 roms and the e950tmobile fix and I still have the same issue. I can hear them, but they can't hear me. I'm trying to figure out if its limited to me or a small group of users. I'm so tempted to go back to stock and wait for the official 4.4 update.
I have what may be the same issue using T-mobile. If I use a 4.4 ROM with the handset mic, my voice fades in and out and is quite garbled. People describe it as sounding like I'm underwater. The behavior is somewhat different based on the ROM as follows:
4.3 ROM - no handset voice at all
most 4.4 ROMs - no handset voice without the Tmobile Kitkat fix. With the fix, voice using handset mic is as described above
ROMs based on stock - handset mic works fine.
Based on a little experimentation, I think the issue is the noice canceling mic on the top of the phone not being set up correctly by the ROM. If I block the small hole on the top of the phone, voice from the handset clears up somewhat, but is still very faint.
I think disabling the noice canceling mic may fix the the problem, but I haven't found a way to do it yet.
You can count me among those with volume issues on the AT&T E980. The only ROM I could count on was SlimBean, and thanks to recovery issues I can't even get back to that anymore. So I'm back to stock and hoping that we actually see an update to KitKat.

Was it difficult to go back to stock?

I'm currently running the V5 version of this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2462453
But apparently, I had the same issue last night on this ROM. I received a couple of calls where people kept saying they couldn't hear me. I tested it this morning against voicemail, and the same garbled voice was back. I rebooted the phone and it cleared up.
Still think it's the noise canceling mic and would love to be able to disable it.

It's not too bad, just follow the directions closely (I think they're in the general section). After having done it so many times recently, I don't need to look at them anymore. Although it was difficult to go back to stock after having used Slim for so long!
Hello,
I have a Tmo M8 converted to GPE. I recently found that the caller cannot hear me when I turn on the speaker. Upon searching around for the issue, I found this diagnostics test *#*#3242#*#* I performed the audio test and the test for Mic 2 fails as I cannot hear anything that was recorded in the test.
Clearly this is a hardware issue and the phone uses Mic 2 for noise when I switch on the speaker, it used to work on Kitkat, but I doubt the OS update is the issue here.
Anyway my question is What can I do to restore/repair Mic2 without turning it into the Manufacturer? If I can't do anything, is there a way to disable the Mic2 entirely?

I wouldn't rule out the 5.01 update as the issue. I have a stock GPE that has lost the ability to record calls after the OTA. Something has certainly changed in the update that affects the Mic.
Hello!
I have an unusual problem with my Note 2
Few days ago I tried to make a call but I couldn't - I heard the Note's sound that the call started but I heard no ringing. When a person picks up, I don't hear them and they don't hear me. When I hang up and redial, phone loses reception completely.
I thought that it is maybe an issue with mic and speaker, however Viber calls work fine. It is not an issue with SIM, it works fine in other phones.
I am running completely unrooted, never touched stock ROM.
I tried a factory reset and it didn't help.
Could anyone help me what this is and how can I fix it? Thanks!

flash modem and see if sth changes
I've run into the most bizzare problem, and I can't seem to find anyone else having the issue so I've come to XDA to ask for help before I ship the phone back to HTC.
Whenever I'm in a phone call, I get this extremely high pitched buzz/beeping sound if I'm using the phone's earpiece, but ONLY from the earpiece and only if I'm in a call. If I play audio via the earpiece like from Google Voice or any other application, the buzz isn't there. I tried to install a call recorder to see if I could get an example of what it sounds like, but oddly enough the problem doesn't happen if the recorder is running. I've tried a factory reset, and that didn't fix it either.
Frankly, I'm stumped since it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue, but it also doesn't seem to be a software issue either. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Which HTC 10 do you have.. Carrier branded/US unlocked/WWE? Which software version are you on?
Are you on a VoLTE network? Do you get the same noise if you make a Wi-Fi call (if your carrier is capable)?

Oh, sorry, it's Sprint branded, model 2PS64 to be specific, on software version 1.24.651.3. There is no support for Wi-Fi calling, so I can't check that. I believe Sprint uses VoLTE, but I'm not positive. The buzz doesn't come across if I have headphones plugged in, or if I'm using Bluetooth, so I don't think it is a radio issue.
There was a high pitched noise that comes from the screen at lower brightness levels associated with firmware below 1.53. Put your ear up to the HTC logo on the back and mess with brightness and see if you can hear it. You might have to wait until a new update is released for Sprint.
Have you been able to reproduce the problem in a different area (not sure how your signal is there)
Also, when making calls on GSM phones with no VoLTE there is background static/buzzing most of the time even with latest 1.80 update for US unlocked phones.

Thanks so much, sure enough the noise is coming from the screen itself, not the earpiece, although it still only seems to do it during calls. I would never have never figured this out myself, I can't thank you enough. I'll just wait until Sprint releases an update. Thanks again!

Here's a thread full of reports. http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/whining-noise-speaker-low-brightness-t3376476
I'd compare my phone to another sprint one to be sure. I'm thinking if it's the screen high pitched noise that had plagued this phone prior to update, then it should go away when the screen is off. Buy maybe sprint is different then others? Ask in that thread for feedback from other Sprint phone users.
