Case Cracking - Hairline Fractures - T-Mobile LG G3

Someone sent me a link to a thread where users are reporting cracks on their G3s. Most seem to be around the headphone or USB jacks.
http://www.androidauthority.com/lg-g3-cracked-casing-514460/
I don't have any there, but after reading the thread I started looking at my phone closely and found one right under the IR blaster at the top. It goes from the blaster to the end of the chrome bezel.
I've never dropped my phone, so this seems to have happened with normal use.
Anyone else notice any cracks?

No cracks so far thankfully..but every time I remove the battery cover I can feel the phone chassis flex and it makes me nervous.

No cracks no lag no shuttering perfect screen

Cracks here. Same exact one as all the pictures. Through the mic on bottom of phone. Also one through infrared sensor on top of phone. Got this phone a month ago. Never dropped. Never gotten banged around or dinged on anything.
Should this be under warranty with it being a known issue and LG knowing about it?

I would think so

Just happened to mine as well. I'm using the ATT version of the phone. I will try to see if they replace the phone.

I just called LG and they told me it was physical damage and not covered under warranty. I emailed them as well and received the same response.

No crack yet, but i had the hardest time getting the USB in the phone to get it rooted. I thought I was going to break something. If it is warrantied just take a hammer to it and call it in to the insurance company? Just Kidding ...

Mine has developed the Crack where the ir blaster is. The USB has been hard to plug in since day 1. Has to be at just the right angle. I'm calling T-Mobile too

Nice! Do you have insurance or Jump!?

I have jump, but it doesn't factor into the exchange. They're chalking up as a faulty device.

Nice just call t-mobile and they'll fix it?

Yes they said it is warranty fix

No issues here, thankfully.

I wonder how wide spread this issue is.
Is the thinking that these devices came this way unnoticed or that this happens spontaneously?

No issues here. Granted I use a TPU case and have the wireless charging back so I never use the USB port on the bottom.

Screen Cracked Today :(

So....
I've NEVER dropped any of my phones, ever, as long as I've had cell phones. Well, dropped and it actually hit the ground. I've dropped this damn phone like 4x already, I think partially to do with it being so smooth and "slippery" to the hand.
Anyway, I dropped it once from about 6 feet in the air directly on the screen and NOTHING happened at all (except some very very minor dings to the frame itself) and light scratches to the screen protector. Today, I was trying to pull it out of my pocket at work when it slipped and fell (from about 2 feet from the ground) landing on the right side of the phone. My right hand (phone sits in right pocket) is in a brace due to a stress fracture I received at work, so when it slipped I couldn't catch it. I watched it fall, which was the worst moment ever lol. Since my work pants have slanted pockets, it fell behind me so I couldn't even attempt to put my foot under it to stop the impact.
Anyway, as I picked it up I honestly didn't expect to see anything. I pick it up, turn it over and it looks like there is a piece of hair right along the frame in the shape of a sideways "U". I went to brush it off and realized it had cracked!
It's a very small and almost non noticeable crack JUST before the digitalizer starts but I know it's there so it bothers me. I showed a few guys at work and nobody noticed it until I pointed it out.
Anyway, think its worth looking into getting fixed or just stick it out because it's so minor?

I have to agree though, if its doable for you, get it fixed. Once compromised like that its just gonna get worse most likely. Even just setting it down or bumping into something while its in your pocket could make it much worse.

Why mine is in an otter box ^-^
But I personally would just throw a case on it to prevent further cracking. Doesn't look too horrible from your picture. But as others already mentioned, it will crack even more easily since it's already started.
That's a known issue with the s 3. The screen is lifted a hair from the bezel. So the bezel bends into the glass at the edge (weakest point in glass) where other devices usually bend over the glass.
But good luck to whatever you decide!
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah it's not bad at all. And remember you can replace just the glass too. But i would wait for it to be more messed up before doing that
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Slap a good case on it and it should be fine for now at least.
Let's just hope that you don't drop it again to further increase the cracking.
An OtterBox Defender Case might be a good idea.
Very bulky, kind of pricey, but it will offer you the protection that you need.
Personally id be worried about further damage as is. Obviously the glass is weakened already, and while it may seem ok to wait until its worse before fixing, i have to disagree as im pretty sure this also makes the digitizer more vulnerable to damage as well.
How often have you seen or heard about devices that had a cracked screen causing the touch capabilities to break as well? One more drop or bump into the corner of a table where that crack is and you may not get anymore response at all.
I just think it potentially could turn into a much more expensive repair if not taken care of soon. Just not sure id personally want to risk it.
Its just my opinion is all.

red you could just take it to tmo? or call Samsung it has to be under warranty but hey they'll do it and no screws up guaranteed. ad it will cost more than a do it your self. i saw somewhere that Verizon did for 100 with insurance, i assume tmo would close to that
Radio Shack has a service to replace your screen for $100. You would be without your phone for a couple of days, however.
I highly recommend the Otterbox Defender, and put all of my phones in one.
In March, while doing some climbing, I fell about 30 ft then tumbled down the side of a mountain. I had a Droid X in my pocket (in it's Defender), and the only damage to the phone was to the camera lens. Everything else about the phone was groovy. I was not in such great shape, as this was in the Arizona desert mountains, so there was no cushy landing whatsoever.
Defender FTW!

Sorry, i guess i just assumed we were talking about going by one of the diy guides i saw here not long ago. Pretty sure they had instructions for replacing only the glass, but anyway, if you have the full protection plan then it doesnt matter how bad its damaged. I believe the price about a month ago was $130.

Ok, i gotcha. I could be wrong but if you have the full protection plan i was under the impression that you could pretty much do anything and get a replacement. So if im right you can attempt the fix diy style and if unsuccessful then get it replaced. I would double check me on that though!

Yeah, I was considering the DIY route (its like $25 on eBay but you have to break your screen off basically which scares the sh*t out of me).
I do have the full insurance. I may have to go to T-Mobile just to see how much it would cost. I don't have the extra money, just got my car out of the shop. If anything, if the insurance covers it and isn't very much, I could just tough it out until it gets worse (if it does) and THEN take it in to the store for work.

The glass is the digitizer... It also houses the soft keys as well. It is fused to the screen and will require a heat gun or heat plate to separate from the screen properly. This post is full of misinformation. You will need to purchase either both the screen and digitizer separately or as a single unit. It will be almost impossible for you to replace just the glass unless you have access to some very expensive equipment to separate it and fuse the replacement in place properly.
I've watched several videos on youtube showing the removal of just the screen from the digitizer on the S3. The guys on there use either a heat gun or hair dryer and don't have to disassemble the phone to replace just the glass. Do a search and watch a few and see if you want to tackle it. Mine has a crack in it and I'm considering trying it to see if I can.

You should always disassemble the device when applying heat to it for a repair. Heat kills electronics. There is plastic inside the phone that can and will melt when heat is applied. Like the power and volume buttons. Ribbon cables can also be damaged. There is also rubber inside.

Yeah, cause they never get left in a hot car. Or out in the hot August sun in Florida. Etc.
I'm not suggesting you use the max heat setting on one. Some common sense should be used.
Okay....This is a bad idea...
I used to work for the repair center at Sprint and I was quite good at it, it takes quite a lot of heat to remove those screens from the digitizer. If you apply that heat to an assembled phone, then at the very least you will destroy the LCD.
Also ribbons are VERRRRY sensitive.
And you should not be leaving your phone in the car in the summer...That is just stupid.

You also stated the videos were from the S3. A completely different phone.
If you want to kill your phone, that's all you. But do not come here telling people it is ok to do crazy stuff like that on their phone. I have worked in phone repair and small electronics repair for 6 years and know for a fact that it takes a high amount of heat to separate the digitizer assembly from the actual screen itself. There are proper methods of doing things, and then there is the method and shortcuts that some jackass came up with and got lucky on. But 90% of the time, it is a failure causing more damage if not completely breaking the device as a whole. Furthermore, A hot car in FL produces nothing compared to the heat of a heat gun or heat plate. And using a hair dryer? I am laughing at you right now.
Stop being a jerk. I didn't suggest anyone do anything but to check out a few videos and to make their OWN decision. I just love internet know-it-alls. If I decide to experiment on my phone, then what's it to anyone on here? My phone, my decision. If it works, then great, if not then guess what? It's my phone, my fault. Don't come on here with your holier than thou attitude and assume you know who you're calling out.
Again, I pointed out that there are people who have successfully removed their screens on their S3's. And the OP should check them out and decide for him/herself. As for the hair dryer, laugh all you want, but if you're gonna try it, then that's precisely what I would try first due to the low temperature output to see if it was even a viable option to unseat the glass from the adhesive beneath.
And lastly. Why not try a cheaper alternative if you need to replace the glass anyway? In my case, I'm not filing an insurance claim and I'm not going to get mine repaired at a repair center. So if I attempt just a screen replacement and I am unsuccessful, then I replace the digitizer/screen assy. anyway. I don't see what's so crazy about that.

I did not suggest you should leave your phone in a hot car. I'm merely illustrating a point. Todays phones go through quality control measures and I'm sure they test them in real world conditions. For a lot of people a phone is just a tool and sometimes they leave them places that you or I would probably would not because they are not as OCD about their electronics.
...did you even read our comments? If you use a heat gun on your assembled phone, you will likely FRY YOUR MOTHERBOARD. There will be no purchasing of new screen as you would need a whole new phone. Though these phones are only $180 these days.
Still you suggested something that is very likely to break a phone without so much as a "this might be a bad idea".

I think they are just worried noobs will find this thread on Google, destroy their phone, and blame xda as a whole; by not having really good warnings and fully testing something, it might give the false impression that it's a good idea when maybe it's not...
That said, everyone should be cool to each other, we're all working and learning together. Isn't the goal to have a good time and gain knowledge?

Poll: Cracked / Not cracked screen

Since I've seen people post here saying their screen has cracked without dropping their phones, I thought I'd start a poll to get an idea of how common this is percentage wise.

Mine is still more than fine.
Even dropped it once.
No cracks here.
Purchased since release day via website. Had it overnighted.
If you actually go through various threads and search about screens cracked without dropping, you'd get an idea on how high this percentage is... besides, it'd be nearly impossible to get everyone here to vote anyway.
It only takes a few seconds to respond. Over time, it should give me an idea.

I can imagine how a phone could crack (inner LCD) without ever dropping it or bumping it.
Simply put it in your tight jeans and sit down. There you go. That's what most of you do.
Moral of the story, don't wear tight jeans, because the screen will FLEX and cause the crack.

Wrong. I haven't worn a pair of jeans since my short stint at trauth dairy back in fall 2006.
I feel like I'm missing something. I dropped my phone from my pocket to hardwood floors and it was fine. Then it was dropped from a dining table to a tile floor and it was fine. I was surprised to see no damage done without a case. Hopefully I won't ever drop it again though. I bought this phone since day one BTW

My screen didn't crack but my bezel did, I have my replacement one already got it yesterday the T-Mobile rep did me a warranty exchange, I'm still using my normal one until I get a case for the new one. If this is for screen cracks only sorry, but I didn't like how I had the phone for a wk and the bezel cracked out of nowhere.

And T-Mobile replaced it for that?
Typically they consider that physical damage and charge a fee on exchange.

Got mine on launch, woke up this morning with a crack at an angle from top left to mid right.
I often fall asleep with it on my chest, woke up and it was on the coffee table; guess someone seen it and put it there. Pissed off, nonetheless.
Hopefully I can get it replaced/fixed since it should still be under warranty and with the device protection bundle thing.
Ugh.

In that case with damage you need to file a claim and pay a deductible then you get one from insurance.
No cracks or scratches

None here, either

I had been there a couple times and the lady helped me every time she knew I'd just bought the phone, I didn't break it so I consider that a defective device

Mine is doing great. I dropped it a few times already. First time with a crappy case that only covered the sides not the top or bottom and a couple times in my otterbox commuter.

beside only having 9 gigs of usable internal storage, the phone has been perfect
I install car audio as a job and I always have my phone in my pocket. I tend to lean on it often with a lot of weight and when I realize it, I check my phone right away. Still haven't experienced any cracks (knock on wood). I'm using a case-mate tough case, if that helps.

Dropped twice now, no cracks yet. I thank my tech21 case.
I would say that a vast majority of people with cracked screens are doing something that they are not being totally honest about...
Probably putting a lot of pressure on it in tight clothes, bumping it against a hard surface...etc etc.
I don't doubt that some may have bad luck and some sort of rare defect...but it is far from the norm.
These devices don't just spontaneously crack. Mines in my pocket all day.... no screen protector and a very slim case.... 100% perfect still.
You guys with cracked screens simply have to be more careful with your $700 toys.
NO....even more careful.
Cheers
My son just cracked his.. Dropped out of his pocket with a decent car on it.. From a sitting position

Chassis Gaps

I may be over reacting, but I don't think so. Am I nuts for having my phone replaced for this? I went into the corporate store today, they only had 1 left and that one had a much smaller, but still there, gap in the lower corner. They said a shipment is coming tomorrow and they will look them over to find me a 'gapless' One.
Sad thing is that the fully functional store display unit was completely sealed all the way around.. hopefully it was just a bad batch of phones.
not nuts at all. I literally spent 10 minutes examining my phone when I first picked it up. we waited 5 months+ for this phone, we can get pissed over any defect that we want
I noticed this same thing before you posted. I noticed it Friday and immediately went looking. YouTube videos, pics, etc. Other carrier's one's all have the same problem.
Zero gap didn't apply to this particular piece. If you want an idea of just how cosmetic this is watch the ifixit teardown.

Mine is completely gap free. I actually was wondering if HTC had fixed it, I guess not.
I'm so glad mine doesn't have a gap or I'd be obsessing over it lol.

its not really a defect. it doesnt effect anything. 99% of consumers would never notice it. We here at xda just love to look for what we think are "defects"
Mine has it too. I just don't feel like going through the hassle of getting it replaced for a microscopic cosmetic issue. Meh.
Mine has a very minor gap in the top-left corner near the power button. I thoroughly examined this phone when I got it to make sure there weren't any defects, and I didn't even notice that gap. Hell, it may not have even been there 4 days ago. It doesn't bother me, though, assuming it doesn't get any bigger. Purely a minor cosmetic flaw, and not worth exchanging, especially since I'm unlocked.

I'm just worried that it will get bigger over time. If I end up getting one without gaps and then gaps show up later I'll just let it go as a design characteristic, but having just gotten this phone with a locked bootloader (thanks Verizon! :crying: ) I figured I would take advantage of an offered replacement.
I give up, looked at a total of 16 phones at 3 stores and they all had some sort of gap on the top.

That's crazy. I've inspected every millimeter of mine and have zero gap.
Anyway, if y'all are even a tiny bit handy, this is a fix that someone used and is satisfied with the results:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ht...p-top-after-addition-some-white-silicone.html
Read the whole page of comments, he explains the method. GE white silicone, rub it in and wipe away excess, done. Silicone is very easy to work with.
If anyone tries it, take before and after pics and post them here if you can!

I'm gonna try it this weekend, you already have my before pic. This little gap is killing me and I don't know why. Lol

Mine seems to have gaps between the chassis and the screen glass, if that makes sense. Anyone else?
I work at a vzw store and was checking out our demo unit which had a gap. Then I checked our stock of about 10 phones which also had gaps. Interestingly there really only seemed to be a gap at the top of the phones and not the bottom as much. Top center seemed to be the trend.
Could be a certain batch of phones?
I am in New York, my chassis doesn't have any gaps, not that I can see, and I'm OCD.
my power button although, does have some left over that white filler crap they use, I want to get a knife in there to fix it but from MY past experience, just leave it alone, haha

I don't think it would get bigger over time but what I would do, is get a picture of the issue, with a date from somewhere that they know it's not fake, this way, if it does get bigger, you can say it was an issue from the start and try to fight for a NEW phone and not a REFURB.
I'm very sorry you have to deal with this on such a great phone.
I do have a TINY TINY gap but nothing that is to the extent of yours, mine might let the size of a piece of small dog hair in but I don't even think it's that open.
Best of luck brother!

Camera glass cracked!

I picked up my M8 last Friday at my local T-Mobile store, and put it in a new OtterBox case as soon as I got in the car. During the past week it has never left its case and has been sitting on my desk or in my pocket. I have never dropped it, set it down too hard, or even looked at it the wrong way. This morning I turned it over and found the glass on the camera has cracked!
I see that this was an issue with the M7, and I'm hoping it is not starting over again with this one. I found this thread on Reddit with a similar situation: http://www.reddit.com/r/htcone/comments/22z4dk/m8_rear_camera_glass_cracked_already/
Anybody else have this issue or any suggestions on what I can do to fix/get it fixed/get it replaced?
Somebody on Reddit also had this issue. I'm kind of worried about getting mine if this happens.
http://www.reddit.com/r/htcone/comments/22z4dk/m8_rear_camera_glass_cracked_already/
That sucks.. It was an issue with the m7 as well. And the lens didn't really change.
My release day m7 still doesn't have a single mark on it. But a couple co-workers fell victim to the broken lens.
As a side note, not sure if it will help or not. But the Nillkin tempered glass screen protector on amazon, comes with glass protectors for the lenses on the back.
Edit: also.. if they hassle you to hard on making you pay for replacements.. You can actually buy the entire rear housing for 49 bucks. Which has the camera lenses on it. I'm assuming they're just using a 3m double sided tape to hold them on, so you could probably push them out from behind on the housing. And dig and pop out your cracked one, and just restick.
http://www.etradesupply.com/htc-one-rear-housing-back-cover-22030.html
I wonder if I just pop out the glass entirely. Why need lens at all? All it does is protect the camera no?
T-Mobile Chat
I just finished a chat with a T-Mobile support rep and they told me to bring my phone in to a store so they can inspect it and determine my options.
According to the rep "There seems to be an issue with the camera and it makes a popping or crackling sound, this could cause your camera to crack." One of the first things they asked me was if I could hear any sounds when trying to take a picture.
I haven't read anything about these sounds elsewhere, but it sounds like something either HTC is aware of or at least just T-Mobile. I have been praising this phone to everyone I know, but am kind of unsure about the build quality now.
Yeah, looks like you must have looked at it the wrong way.

LOL... I expected the front-facing camera to break from me looking at it - not the rear one!
It is ridiculous that I can bash my screen right now and they will replace it for free. This tiny piece of glass that cracked on its own...too bad. HTC Advantage! :highfive:
Figured I"d mention that this just happened to me also.
I noticed that the pictures I was snapping this weekend were blurry and when I checked out the screen, crack
I keep the phone in an Otterbox too.
We'll see what HTC says
Hi Yakayu,
Was wondering if you managed to fix your problem?
I'm in a similar boat and looking to get the whole rear housing replaced as well and hoping they can fix my camera issues there too
as well as a cracked screen the right side of the camera wont focus and is blurry :/
