ASUS Answers - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hello XDA Community,
My name is Scott, I am the ASUS support specialist responsible for the Nexus 7 2012 and 2013. I am leaving this message in the Q&A section to let everyone know if you are having any issues or need support with your Nexus 7 then please feel to email me. My contact information will be found in my signature once it has been activated. For now see below.
I can only offer warranty and RMA support for customers located in North America, but I would be more than happy to assist with troubleshooting your issues regardless of where you are located.
If you are experiencing issues with a particular ROM or Kernel then I would recommend posting your questions in that thread.
If it is a hardware or stock issue then by all means ask away, I may not always check my PMs so emailing me is the best source of contact.
Thanks XDA Community!

Yeah, when is the 2013 LTE going to be up to date? The point of a nexus device is to always be current but yet us deb owners have been crapped on for more than a month in regards to 4.4.4. Its really gonna suck when Android L comes and us deb owners are the only nexus devices not current for a while.

Can you say something about erratic touch screen issues with Nexus 7 2013? And why ASUS / Google has never acknowledged or officially commented about it?
I'm not sure if i have to explain the issue as it's well known, but basically the touch screen has serious issues if it's laying on desk / bed (is not being held / not connected with usb or headphones)
I can guarantee it's affecting ALL Nexus 7 2013 devices, some people just dont know how to reproduce it.
It's shown on this videos for example:
Before you say it's isolated issue, here is amount of results searching for "Nexus 7 2013 touchscreen issue" on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=neus+7+2013+touchscreen+issue (over 122.000 results for the lazy)
Here are some potential fixes but they are not working well AFAIK:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2535835
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2428133
I had my Nexus 7 RMA'd (motherboard was replaced), and it changed nothing. Still the same issue. (i can send you RMA number if you want)
It seems to be grounding problem. (when tablet is being held or connected with headphones / USB there is no problem - as it's grounded properly)
Care to comment? Is this a bad design (Google) or production issue (ASUS) ?

Hello pre4speed,
I am just as anxious as you to see the 4.4.4 update released for the LTE model. At this time I cannot give a release date for this because Google has not released an image for this device. When it comes to the Nexus line Google is responsible for the releases. It could be possible that the LTE edition might skip 4.4.4 and jump straight to Android L when it is released. Let’s hope we see something soon, If you need further assistance you can email me with the Case number N140822232 in the subject line for reference.

Dear k3lcior,
There are reports of the Nexus 7 suffering from touch issues, most of these reports have been fixed with a software update. If the updates do not resolve the touch issues, I recommend sending it in to be diagnosed. I would be more than happy to help assist you and all others with our RMA process.
Since your Nexus 7 has already been to our repair facility I may be able to see what other options are available. If you are interested please feel free to email me at [email protected] with your serial number. Also, please put case number # N140822280 in the subject line.
Best regards,

I have bought Nexus 7 (2013) last August and the warranty had been void already. Three of the sensors including the accelerometer, gyroscope and the magnetic sensor do not work properly which causing the malfunction of auto-rotating. I have sent the tablet for RMA process before and the sensors have been replaced. However, the sensors worked for a week only. In the most of the time, the accelerometer and gyroscope look like disabled but the magnetic sensor can return some value although I reboot the machine.
Will the smart cover case affect the sensors by magnetic field? <--I'm just guessing
I cannot figure out the reason why the sensors do not work. Can you give some opinions to me? Thanks

Hello PC323,
I am sorry to hear about three of your sensors failing within a week of the repair. In regards to your question about the smart cover affecting the sensors, there is a very slight possibility, depending on which cover you are using. If you are using the official case for the Nexus 7 then there should be no interference, the magnet that is included should be small enough and placed properly so it does not affect other sensors. I cannot speak about third party covers though. You can always try wiping the cache (done through the recovery) or even a factory reset if you wanted to go that far. If the resets do not resolve you issues then it might be a hardware issue. If you would like you could email me and include case number 140822657 in the subject line for reference. If you provide your Serial Number I will be able to see what was repaired on your device as well.

Hi Scott! Great to see manufacturers represented on the forum! Never seen this before, guess I should have gotten a nexus device sooner. Is there any way we can see phonecall support for the LTE version? I've seen the asus padphone, is our radio missing something hardware wise or is Google/Asus holding back? When I get home from work I go straight from my phone to my nexus 7 but I would love to be able to just pop my sim in and not worry. I'm a job jumper and I need to receive calls on my nexus

Hello,
I am aware that there are some workarounds that involve using google voice and forwarding your calls. To me the easiest option would be to find an application that uses your Nexus 7 as a Bluetooth device. This will allow you to use your tablet to place phone calls and send text messages. I can’t personally recommend an application that will do this but I do know that there are applications that will let you do this. This would not require you to move your sim card form one device to the other. If you need to contact me your personal case number is N140823357.

trade LTE for non LTE?
I was one of the first purchasers of a Transformer Prime and needed solid GPS performance. Asus bought back my Prime and I purchased a TF 700. I replaced my TF-700 with a Nexus 7 2013 LTE so I could get the benefits of having the most current version of the Android OS. Well, we all know how the most expensive LTE model is the "ugly step child" who's updates actually lag behind non Nexus devices.
I am trying to stay positive here but this level of support isn't what we have been led to expect for Nexus devices. Is it possible to exchange a Nexus 7 2013 LTE for a non LTE model?
With the exception of the uber late updates to the tablet I truly love it. The most expensive model shouldn't be the Cinderella.

Scott, my N7 2013 doesn't get recognised by PC when connected via USB. What may the issue? It is very frustrating. Gives me USB device not recognised(port reset failed) message every time I connect it any PC(I have tried connecting it to a few) using different cables.

Scott,
I saw your post and am taking you up on your offer.
Her's my story so far:
I called Asus this morning to inquire about replacing the USB port on a Nexus 7. After quite some time with the rep all he could say was the estimate was around $200 but it could come up cheaper depending on what the technician finds.
I know the problem with my sons Nexus 7 is simply the USB port needs to be replaced because the tablet still functions 100% in every way. The only issue I have is that when he plugs in the charging cable it will simply fall out. He has to make sure it stays in and not touch or move the tablet while it is charging. There is no need to troubleshoot, only to replace that USB connector part. I see the part on ebay ranging from $44 to $75, but I prefer to have the manufacturer repair my device as opposed to doing it myself or third party. Can you advise me if I can get a more solid price please as I feel that before I spend $200 to repair my sons almost 2 year old tablet I'd sooner replace it. If I replace it, it's likely I may choose the manufacturer that has been supporting me the best, and at the moment that is not Asus. Is this something you can help me with please? Thanks

Probably you can pinch the port .... They seem to open up and get loose pinch it down with a flat head and moderate pressure ..... Worth a try

[HARDWARE FAULT] WiFi antenna fault. HTC One X [22.04.2013]

Welcome,
There is a number of threads here about general WiFi problems on the HTC One X (HOX)
However, this thread is specifically for the confirmed (by the community & unfortunately me) (and finally HTC since 18.06.2012) hardware fault of a loose connection on the WiFi antenna.
If you are suffering from a really bad WiFi or Bluetooth connection and think you may have this hardware fault, there is a simple test you can do. Please only do this test if you are sure you could have the problem, PillipL explains why here
Update 30.08.2012 After a member reported he damaged his phone by repeatedly doing the squeeze test, I want to state again that you should ONLY squeeze if you are sure you could have the fault, please do this as a last resort and only squeeze the phone gently. I think a mobile phone should with stand a gentle squeeze and if it does damage the antenna I am sure it was only going to be a matter of time before you would have developed the fault anyway. Do this test your own risk! To read the report of the squeeze test damaging a phone click here
The squeeze test
Read this whole post carefully before beginning, then gently squeeze the side back of your phone, between the camera lens and the volume rocker. If your WiFi signal strength improves only to drop back down when you stop squeezing, then you have this seemingly common fault.
If your WiFi doesnt improve or gets worse whilst squeezing, this is normal and you don't have this fault. Please don't keep repeating this test as it is commonly accepted that this will accelerate the issue.
Important Update (17.07.2012) We now have the full official HTC test and fix procedures with pictures, see here and also in pdf (thanks to lawrence750), click here to download. Important Update 30.08.2012 - We now have the full parts list needed to carry out the official repair, see HERE
Video demonstrations of the issue
Thanks to our members everywhere, we have 13 excellent videos demonstrating the issue.
Video 2 - Video 3 - Video 4 - Video 5 - Video 6 - Video 7 - Video 8 - Video 9 - Video 10 - Video 11 - Video 12 - Video 13 (o2 repair FAIL!)
What to do now?
Ok, so if you don't have the fault, that is good news and I hope you can fix your different problem with a software update or router reset. Search this forum for some of the other wifi threads as this one is not for you.
If you do have the fault, I recommend you declare your phone DOA (Dead On Arrival) and exchange your phone for another. In the UK, you can do this within 28 days of the date of the purchase (so I believe).
If you fall outside of the DOA exchange period, then send your phone back for repair and hope they fix the issue or replace the phone without too much delay.
If you have unlocked your phone and are worried that you may not be covered by the warranty, you have a few options.
Update 22.06.2012 Read Urban Strata's (Official HTC Rep) advice here
1. Re-lock your phone and make sure you are running your stock rom.
If unsure how to do this, follow this guide HERE or watch the video HERE
Then return your phone and hope that they don't notice/blame the issue on you unlocking your boot loader.

This is obviously a manufacturer's fault and if you are based in the UK, the law is definitely on your side (see the quote from Citizens Advice Bureaux below)

2. Fix it yourself
If you are brave/crazy enough, you could try to fix it yourself and people have successfully managed this. I DO NOT recommend this, but if you want to do it anyhow, here is my guide based on the feedback in this thread.
Many people reading this thread have asked for a guide on fixing the WiFi issue themselves. If you do decide to go down this route, please take step by step photos and explain how you did it on this thread and I'm sure you'll get loads of thanks for it.
Guides and tips how to self repair this problem...
I have not taken my HOX apart, however, based on user guides, I would probably do it like this...
(WARNING: This could seriously damage your phone, I do not recommend it and I'm not prepared to do it myself)
Before you start, read all the guides and PillipL post here
1. Remove the Sim and Sim-Tray
2. Tape up the power and volume buttons, to save time fiddling with putting them back in afterwards.
3. Out of the recommended methods to open your phone below, I would prefer to use my finger nail and or a guitar plectrum as I imagine this to be the best way to avoid scratches and damaging the case/screen. BE CAREFUL not to push the tool used too far inside the phone as this will cause damage.
4 I would probably use a soldering iron to make a secure connection between the pins. I fear that just bending the pins up slightly might develop the same issue again later on.

Member's recommended tools for opening your HOX
If you are brave enough to open your HOX, I have heard that the fix only takes around 15 mins (but, please don't rush) Here are some of the ways our members opened their HOX's...
*Using a guitar plectrum (not sure which size is best, I would try a few)
*Using only your finger nail (assuming they are long/strong enough)
*With an automobile spark plugs gauge sheet using the 9mm
*Using a car dent puller!? (sticking it to the screen and just popping it out)
*Using a Coke can top ( the aluminium bit that get thrown away, see Video Guide 3 )
I have not tried any of the above, but I will continue to update with the latest techniques as I hear about them.
Did you open your HOX a different way? We would love to hear from you
Temporary fix

They are other versions of this fix floating around, using coins or tape and various other items stuck in a case to constantly compress the phone.
I do not recommend this temporary fix, here's why, the fault is caused by the antenna pins getting squashed down, if you squash the phone further your phone may improve but over time will get even worse and the fix will require even more compression, ultimately the fix will stop working.
BE VOCAL, make sure HTC can hear you
You can contact HTC, on their (website here) (twitter page here) and (facebook page here)
Linking back to this thread might help explain the problem. Also, it's probably worth sending this link with the description when returning the phone too.
Let us know here, what feedback you get from HTC.
Issues created by this problem
1. Poor to useless WIFI (obviously)
2. Poor to useless Bluetooth (as this uses the same antenna as WIFI)
3. Battery drain (as your phone will need to work harder to maintain a connection)
4. You will probably rely on 3g data more often, so your phone bills may increase

Mine is a grey model, Serial Number HT23W*******.
For more infomation on what these serial numbers mean please read this helpful post here.
Possible causes
So far, (07.06.12) we are still unsure what the cause of this problem is, or how it can be avoided, however that has not stopped us speculating...
1. Poor QC allowing faulty devices to be shipped.
2. Phone getting warm and misshaping the internal parts and/or more likely the uni-body preventing the pins connecting with the antenna. (Using a silicon case is one theory for causing overheating)
3. Phone getting squashed in your pocket/bag/hand and the contacts getting bent downwards preventing a connection.
4. PillipL has came up with IMO the most likely explanation for the issue below..
PhillipL said:
Two problems with the lugs I can see, the first is the polycarbonate case is giving slightly, and the lugs don't spring up to maintain the same contact pressure.
Second, anything depressing the back of the case (phone in pocket for example) is causing the lugs to bend down slightly, and as they are not springs they will not necessarily return back when the pressure is gone, hence testing for the problem could cause it. If the phone is kept in a pocket and the case is flexing even only slightly then the lug and contact pad might be moving against each other, even a tiny microscopic movement repeated for each step the owner takes would soon wear away the gold plating on the connections causing a less than stellar connection. Repair horror stories
Below is a list of members who have had experiences with HTC and/or the companies they bought the phones off, this section is intended to name and shame in the hope that these companies will improve customer services in the future, it is also intended to draw attention to the individual cases.
I would like to make clear that we have had many success stories reported too and so far no one who has had the official fix implemented has complained the fault reoccurred. Personally I recommend that members suffering this WiFi fault return the phone to the seller and ask for a Repair, Replacement or Refund under the Sale of Goods Act (UK) (If within 6 months since purchase).

I have the same problem ( HK phone ) and its very clear when using a BT headset, just placing my hand over that area and the music stops...
It is beyond me why HTC continues to insist upon having these shoddy antenna designs. The GS2 had all of it's antennas solidly designed and connected. The crap design needs to stop and they need to have anyone who pushes this design removed.
No one cares if having the antenna in the case means you get a better antenna, especially not when your connection to the case is a piece of **** that can break itself over the course of two years.
For reference, the Galaxy S2 and S3 all have their antennas mounted just over the PCB, beneath the plastic case. No one is crying about defective antennas.

Same for me guys, h23, significant increase when pressing the top right corner. So glad this has been picked up on, I kept thinking it was my router or bad radio or my imagination! Booked in for repair on Wednesday (screen ripple issue as well) fingers crossed it comes back fixed.

Maybe the phones needs to over heat to loosen the contacts and cause the problem, just a guess. My phone always had the issue though.
I'm sorry you have the problem, but, at least you can get it fixed now you've diagnosed the problem.

Becareful then, sounds like your pins could be starting to loosen. Let's hope it was just your hand blocking the signal slightly.

Waithing service for call back after i left my phone there
I join on facebook page and post comment with this thread.Lets see how long will stay
Another option when you're using a hardshell case: take a piece of paper, fold it 4 times and stick it on the back of your phone. Pop it in your case and there's your easy, dirty fix until HTC admits the problem.

You can share it on your Youtube account, that's easier to watch than downloading it from Dropbox. I hope it helps and HTC finally admits there's a problem. I'm still pissed off they send it back to me unrepaired. While I send a letter and pictures of the problem with it.
Is this affecting the SH25 models also?

[Q] GPS not working and Samsung says BER

I bought the Galaxy Nexus about 2 - 3 months ago. A week ago the phone's GPS stopped working. I called Samsung and I sent the phone to them for repair. They said it is a BER (Beyond Economical Repair) due to corrosion / liquid damage. I can't imagine how would water got into the phone or how it only affected the GPS with everything else working. I really took a good care of the phone. I called technical support but they did not help me either.
I use the GPS a lot while travelling and I cannot live without it. Can someone tell me if there is anything left I can do? Is it possible to replace the GPS chip inside the phone ? should I get a bluetooth GPS ? I am kinda lost and feel unfortunate that this happens.
Download GPS status from the play store. See if you still get any satellites, if you at least get a few then most likely the gps.config file is missing some stuff.
Nothing shows up on GPS status. Always 0 / 0
Got exactly same problem but Samsung keeps saying that handset is OK. Sent 4 times got back with no results..... do not know what to do?

I got a gnex from play store in June 2012 and the GPS on it just wouldn't work. I
tried all the GPS patches a handful of custom ROM thinking ics could have been the problem. But nothing made the GPS work. GPS status showed 0/0 satellites.
In September I bought a second nexus for my wife and to my surprise and then anger, the GPS showed and locked almost instantly.
My point being, Samsung fixed the GPS chip on the newer models. If only they had done so when people complained all over the WWW regarding the GPS issue.

May I ask what date did you purchase your Galaxy Nexus?
UPDATE: I called Samsung multiple times and they told me that according to their policy water damage is not covered by warranty. I did not throw the phone in the toilet or in a lake. All sensors work including cellular radio, WiFi, BT, HSPA, 3G, NFC, multi-touch screen, proximity sensor, light sensor and USB works as well. It is ONLY the GPS that is not working.
The guy on the phone told me to go to Samsung.com and write an email to their customer service. The only link I got was Email the CEO. I thought this was kinda a joke but; nevertheless; I wrote an email and I sent it. Surprisingly, the next day I got a thorough response from Samsung. They offered me a one time courtesy fix for about $190 and a photo (attached) for the damage on the phone. Their point is that there is no way to pinpoint whether the damage was from them or from the user. BTW, I got the official car dock and an extended battery so I already spent some good money on this phone and the car dock is mainly for navigation as I use it a lot. I did not go with the fix as I thought it might be better just to hold off and wait for the next Nexus by late November.
Maybe if this issue is affecting other users Samsung would recognize that it is a manufacturer defect and offer us a fix under warranty.
That's the JTAG port..
They probably don't want to replace the whole motherboard as the GPS chip is on the board.. Then the JTAG port happened to be corroded, so they took the chance.
Will the next nexus have a longer screen?

MAN THIS make me hesitant to get a Galaxy Nexus now........

Are all nexus 7's defective?

So i decided to buy myself a second gen nexus 7 at staples a while back since they was selling them for 100 dollars brand new, so im a pretty advanced android user and i know my tech and i can usually figure this stuff out on my own, but anyways i got the tablet brought it home and powered it on, installed a couple of games, played some games for a couple of games and every so often the tablet will just completely randomly reboot out of nowhere, i have went back to staples to swap it out with another brand new tablet because i thought maybe i just had bought a defective unit .So i powered this one on expecting to have no crashes or reboots and i was seeting up and syncing my google account and it just completely randomly reboots again!. my tablet has the latest kitkat installed on it, disabled google currents, cleared the cache, the whole 9 yards, ive done extensive research on the internet and have no real proven solution, i have however come to the conclusion that it might have something to do with the GPS, because the crashing happens the most when using apps that take advantage of the GPS, such as runkeeper and google maps. i get an average of 3-4 random reboots a day. also i bought the tablet hoping to use it for navigation on my trip but it will not stay on for longer than 30 minutes when trying to use the GPS. So i ask you android users out there what can i do to fix these odd random reboots? is there any solution?
UPDATE: i installed cyanogenmod, still didnt help

My apologies but i have already returned the tablet to staples for a refund, thank you for trying to offer help though, i love your products asus and will continue to expect great things from your company, im currently using an asus VG248 monitor btw .

Why did ASUS/Google ship this tablet when it is...buggy?

I bought my N7 2013 Wi-Fi April 2014 used, it worked fine till a couple of months ago when things starting going out of whack, touchscreen registering on multiple locations, not registering, sensors stopped working. At the end of the day, the issues resolve themselves with a reboot, or me removing the back cover and basically wiggling all the cables.
But why on Earth did Google ship this device with all these issues?
EDIT:Looks like I messed up and posted this in the wrong forum.
You gotta love the Internet where people can spew their opinion without any basis or facts. This guy buys a used device and it starts acting up so he reboots it and it works yet he still complaints about the device. I've owned both versions of the Nexus 7 and they all have been great. Like all software based things they occasionally have bugs, but considering how much they do it's minor. The two times the performance started declining a complete system reset cured the problem.

You guys just proved you don't know anything about this device. Look up the numerous people who've had issues with it brand-new, my Nexus 7 might have been used when I bought it, but it was almost completely as if brand-new.
This device is just like every other device ever made..... Their will be the occasional problem here or there. No device is perfect.
But, I too agree. I own several nexus tablets and phones (5 and both 7s). The nexus 7 2013 is definitely the one with the worst problems, especially with the Touchscreen which is a hardware problem. I have one (bought directly from Google) and know. None of the workarounds fully solve it. Shame on Google.
Many more owners have had complaints about the nexus 7 2013 than any other nexus.
I love my N7, but Asus really should have tried something different with the ribbon cables. Most of the non-software problems with the tablet stem from those connectors getting loose over time.
Other than that, I have been thoroughly pleased with it.
Me too. But that Touchscreen problem is not a minor problem.

Question never answered about the faulty battery...

Now first, here's that question:
Do all Note 7 considered "unsafe" by Samsung have a 0,01 chance to explode? Or are only 0,01% of these considered unsafe phones have a faulty battery thay may explode, thus making the rest "safe to use"?
The main thing you can learn by searching google and reading countless website about the Note 7 faulty battery is the following: 0,01 % of Note 7 are affected with a faulty battery. There's a "batch" with faulty batteries, etc...
But they never clearly tell you if this makes 9999% of other Note 7 safe..
The Samsung official warning and countless websites keep telling us to exchange our phones with "safe ones". But what if my phone is already safe?
Why should I exchange my perfectly working phone with another which I don't even know if it will work properly...
From my understanding ALL of the Notes with SDI battery could have this problem. 0.01% is the rate of the phones with simptoms manifested...
Sent from my SM-N920C using XDA-Developers mobile app
yes,I think that is the real problem, the batteries may start failing in unpredictable ways at undetermined times, remember the first problems about reboot and bootloops that ended in bricking? I think they were batt related, so a perfectly functioning device now, may or may not fail at any time, I got mine on 29th Aug, and works really fine to this very moment, but, who knows? might fail in two minutes! I will exchange it on 30th Sept, when my carrier is starting the procedure

From the number of reported incidents (of which 1/3 turned out to be bogus), it is likely that .01% of the 2.5M battery packs running around in the wild are defective. But which ones? So when you can't answer that question the only thing to do is haul them all back in. Based on the cost and black eye this caused Samsung you can be pretty sure if there was any way to identify the .01% they would have done it. I would have kept my original phone for months until I nicked or scratched it before exchanging it. The stupid "turn your phone off" nag screen they forced out via OTA is the only reason I got a replacement now.
If you go by the raw numbers of how many phones have actually had a problem, the percentage is far less than .01%. I think what Samsung means is that there are .01% of N7's that could possibly be from a batch that could possibly have a future battery issue. The issue as they explained was a batch without proper plastic/tape between the lithium cores of the battery making them more likely to eventually get hot while charging and touch thereby causing them to hot-vent (not really "explode", but whatever you want to call it they get very hot and if you are holding the phone or it is near you it won't be good). In any case, I bet Samsung knows the IMEI's of the phones that could be effected, but to be safe and avoid litigation risk they are recalling ALL of the phones.
I have my new N7, have yet to set it up and migrate over from my original N7. I don't think my original N7 has an issue honestly, but I am following protocol. The odd thing is that VZ had originally shipped my N7 (I pre-ordered) since I do not have a VZ corp store in my town and the closest one is an hour away. They have not given me ANY instructions, box, shipping lablel - NOTHING about sending my original N7 back. I have to wonder if they are even going to ask for it back. ?? Seems odd - you'd think they would want the recalled phones back and out of the hands of consumers. I am very tempted to set up my new N7 for my GF and continue to use my original N7 but won't simply because I have a feeing that the original N7's will at some point be IMEI blocked from being used in the future. She has a S4 and is using it on Straighttalk and that thing is slow as molasses. I think there is something wrong with her S4 honestly, but would love to get her an N7. I wonder if down the line someone will be making a replacement battery for the N7 that one could buy off of Amazon? Just thinking ahead if VZ or Samsung does not actually ask for my original N7 back.
