Are all nexus 7's defective? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

So i decided to buy myself a second gen nexus 7 at staples a while back since they was selling them for 100 dollars brand new, so im a pretty advanced android user and i know my tech and i can usually figure this stuff out on my own, but anyways i got the tablet brought it home and powered it on, installed a couple of games, played some games for a couple of games and every so often the tablet will just completely randomly reboot out of nowhere, i have went back to staples to swap it out with another brand new tablet because i thought maybe i just had bought a defective unit .So i powered this one on expecting to have no crashes or reboots and i was seeting up and syncing my google account and it just completely randomly reboots again!. my tablet has the latest kitkat installed on it, disabled google currents, cleared the cache, the whole 9 yards, ive done extensive research on the internet and have no real proven solution, i have however come to the conclusion that it might have something to do with the GPS, because the crashing happens the most when using apps that take advantage of the GPS, such as runkeeper and google maps. i get an average of 3-4 random reboots a day. also i bought the tablet hoping to use it for navigation on my trip but it will not stay on for longer than 30 minutes when trying to use the GPS. So i ask you android users out there what can i do to fix these odd random reboots? is there any solution?

[Q] Droid Incredible gets hot and keeps rebooting..

My phone is not rooted. In the last month or so, my phone would all of a sudden reboot itself while I was in the middle of an app, surfing the web, using the navigation, or downloading/updating an app from the market. I also notice when this happens that the battery feels very warm, like its overheated. I have checked online and get conflicting answers. What could be the cause of this? I want to know if there is a solution before I take the phone in to Verizon. It has also happened once or twice in the middle of the call. Your input is appreciated.

This has happened to me. I'm not sure what causes it, faulty something somewhere. If you monitor your temps, you'll find it always reboots around the same temperature.
Easy solution though.
Take it into a Verizon store. Tell them your problem. They'll ask you to reproduce it for them.
The easiest way: proceed to surf like a maniac. (I just refreshed the main full page of engadget and whatnot)
After they see it, they'll send you a new one. And that 30 day thing doesn't matter. A different warranty, manufacturer's warranty covers things for a year.

I had this problem as well. I called Verizon and explained the problem. I was asked to attempt a factory reset, and before I could, the phone shut off and started to reboot. The rep told not to bother and sent me a replacement which I received the next day. The call lasted maybe 5 minutes...

Thanks for the input
Thank you for the input and suggestions. I called Verizon and they said they will send me a reconditioned phone today. I don't qualify for a 'new' one, even after the fuss I made. Hopefully, I won't have the problem again. The rep also mentioned that it is perhaps not wise to use the phone as a primary source to surf the internet because it is not designed to be able to handle all the data, etc and the reason why it reboots is because its a safety issue with the phone. When it gets overworked it needs to restart.
I am thinking that if the replacement gives me the same problem, then I may have to go with an iPhone because it seems that Droid isn't up to the task?

That rep is wrong. This is a SMARTPHONE. Why else did we buy it but to be able to surf when we want? Under normal temps, like, under 100 degrees, it might get hot, but it shouldn't reboot.
It's a hardware issue.
I personally went on a trip to New York where the outside temperature was over 100 degrees (hottest summer ever I'm told) and I had no problems with my refurbed phone.
And you shouldn't be getting a refurb, it should actually be a "CLNR," which stands for Certified Like-New Replacement.
So don't jump ship quite yet

Props on both of those statements. I've mentioned before in other posts I'm an in-store technician and sometimes (not my coworkers, I think I have them pretty up to date) other technicians talk out of their ass. Gmichael is right, it's a CLNR, and if you compared that to a "brand new" phone out of a box you could not tell the difference, and if you said you can you'd be lying to me. The warranty still stands, and typically the ESN or certain parts will be recycled to reduce waste. It's not like you're getting some dinged up phone with someone else's fingerprints and cheek smudges on the screen.
Just out of curiosity you said you have your phone rooted, do you overclock at all? I found that when I overclocked the processor and got a few things running at one time the phone would warm up and lock up for a second then do a reboot. Even when I'm not doing that though the phone will get pretty warm while doing some really processor intensive things, especially while on a charger.

LOL at this statement btw. Not to be too much of a fanboy, but I've used an iPhone before and I cannot figure out what the big deal is about it. As far as I'm concerned this phone SMOKES the iPhone. Not even on the same planet.
Even, my phone heats up and reboots while using over 3G. Also battery gets heated while using navigation, playing games etc. I’m on Stock Gingerbread ROM, with S-Off, rooted and on gingertiny Kernel. I tried using the phone after swapping battery with OEM battery of a fellow Dinc user and also 3500 mah battery but the problem still persists. I’m located in India and using the phone on Reliance Network. What could be the cause of this? Kindly help me with some solution..

I just bought a Nexus yesterday form somewhere else for $100 more. But is a legit seller, super fast shipping, and I'm impatient so that 3 week wait would almost be worth $100.
Either way, if this deal works out good for you. I was just paranoid and actually paid a bit more to buy from a reputable seller and have peace of mind.

I saw numerous recent reports from new egg stating that their "new phone" came with the seals broken, Chinese business cards loaded inside, finger prints, and reports of device tampering (setup program didn't launch, went straight to home screen)
Often on sites such as this, they sell at low prices because they acquire a large stock of cheap devices from an over seas distributor, and having some of the phones having been tampered with would lower the price for them significantly.
Let's hope the sale is legit, and maybe just an overstock of silver/white phones......

Boot into the bootloader by holding down both volume up and down and power.
Scroll to recovery using the volume keys and select recovery.
When you see the android laying on his back press volume up and power. You might have to do it a few times. Eventually, it will show a menu.
Then clear user data and reboot.
Let me know if that works. You will lose your data but your phone will be functional again.
If that doesn't work we can try another method.

I'm going to try to do this tonight most likely when I get home.
I'm hoping there is a way to access the internal memory without booting the device. Someone recommended adp connecting via the computer, and somehow accessing the internal flash memory.
I'm going to copy/paste a well written explanation that details what I've done, researched, ect. In case anyone else finds this thread and hopefully they'll find it useful..
I'm experiencing a similar issue with my international version unlocked gsm galaxy nexus. My device is still on the stock ROM, not rooted, and no modifications. It had been updated to the latest version of Android available for this device via an ota update. My carrier is Tmobile USA.
I got it a few weeks ago from daily steals.com unsubsidized, and had been experiencing intermittent and random restarts of the device. This started about four days after getting the device, and would happen 3-4 times a week, sometimes multiple times per hour.
I researched online and found that random restarts were a common issue with galaxy nexus devices, especially gsm versions, and that at the time there were no known solutions to fix this issue besides factory resetting. Some users claimed after a hard reset, the device continued to randomly reboot. Others noticed the reboot issue stop upon the reset, but only to manifest itself again over time.
After about a week or two of this intermittent reboot issue, the phone seemed to have stopped restarting, or at least if it was, I wasn't noticing it (i.e. It was in my pocket, or I was sleeping).
Now, after it performing perfectly (as far as I know) for about a week, I thought it might have been a fluke, and that uninstalling some programs and updating others solved the issue, and it was just a software conflict.
Unfortunately for me, I was wrong. This afternoon after unplugging my phone from the wall and turning it on, it begun to boot loop. The previous night, I had let the device's battery completely drain to the point where the phone shut off.
Now it's not even staying on for more than 10 seconds at a time before restarting. If I can manage to click into an app before it restarts, it loads up fine, then it freezes, and I hear a Pop sound from the device and it restarts.
I haven't tried hard resetting the device yet, as I'm hoping there's a way to recover some of my data on the device first.
I did however somehow manage to boot it into safe mode once accidentally, which didn't do much as it still rebooted within ten seconds.
Some possible explanations that I've read across the internet include
1) general Android OS error
2) issue with wifi being turned on
3) possible issue with corrupted Sim card?
I've managed to turn off wifi in the few seconds the device was last on, but it still rebooted.
I removed my Sim card entirely and tried to boot as well, to no avail.
I've contacted Samsung USA, but they don't provide support for my device because it's the international version. They gave me a phone number for the UK Samsung support office, but I cannot dial it, as I believe it might be restricted on my phone plan, and I need to get a calling card.
I sent daily steals an email regarding this issue, but I'm not really expecting much from them.
Have many other people experienced the boot loop issue? I've seen a few incidents so far. Is it software? Hardware related?
Evidently people with custom roms are experiencing this issue as well, meaning it's a hardware issue, a software issue that certain roms share the same code, or a driver issue.
What's sad it's that my HD2 with Android hacked onto it still works fine, even after going through the washing machine full cycle while on with a fully charged battery...
Any thoughts/advice?
Thanks in advance for responding.

Ordered a GN from dailysteals on the 21st. It arrived at my door 8 days later. No issues with the brand new phone.
Ordered mine with the most recent sale. Received in about a week with the factory seal almost broken, but it was hanging on by just a little bit. The unit is brand new and no problems. Only thing was the adapter that dailysteals included for the charger did not fit the Samsung Euro wall charger. Luckily had another one.
Battery life has been fantastic so far. I took it out of the package turned it on and the battery lasted over 12 hours without a charge!
It is not a jakju unfortunately and I don't want to mess around with it. The Google Play store website shows it as a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Nexus too.
I bought my nexus when they had it on March 1st and I have no complaints. The phone came brand new in the box with the factory seal and has worked just fine since the day I got it. Even though I paid a little more then it is in I'm very happy with the purchase.

[Q] Random Reboots

My ASUS Nexus 2013 edition running 4.4 (and previously 4.3) randomly reboots while charging and idle. It does it at least once a day while display pictures in "DayDream" on my desk at work. I contacted Play Support and they had me factory restore and the problem continues. I contacted ASUS support and they created an RMA but I'll be without my tablet for 15 to 30 days (annoying). I'm considering just living with it like this till Google pushes a fix or trying to determine if it is a hardware issues.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue and finding a solution short of ASUS's awful support option?
Yes. I just created a thread about this last night: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2557666
It's happened to me twice now and I know someone else who had to get their Nexus 7 replaced under warranty a few weeks back because the same problem. I just got the tablet last night and I have about five weeks from the retailer that I purchased it from to return it.
when i was running 4.3 i have some random hangs (for a few seconds then works again normally) and unreproducible random reboots.
update to 4.4 (which is still use today) the random hangs disappeared, but the random reboots still happen sometimes.
here's hoping the 4.4.1 update fixes it. waiting for OTA or until my patience for it runs out.
Don't wait for a software fix. If your device is rebooting randomly it is likely a hardware problem, get it exchanged/RMA while you still can.
i would like to, but as i said i cannot reproduce it (and it rarely happens). hard to bring to service center and unable to show it on their face. what do you suggest about that?
Mine is rebooting randomly but sometimes it is juste once a week or two and sometimes it can reboot twice the same day. KitKat didn't fix it but I installed 4.4.1 yesterday... I will see if this issue is still there in the next days/weeks
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
EDIT : first reboot on 4.4.1
I got mine in June and it was updated to 4.4 a couple weeks ago. It reboots randomly once or twice a week with no discernible pattern. Today I had an ebook reader (FB Reader) open and was in Chrome when it reset. The battery was above 95%. If it never got any worse I could live with it but I'm worried that it might get worse over time.
I am trying to register it on the ASUS site but it rejects the serial number from the "about tablet" screen. There is no sticker on the Nexus and I might have tossed out the box. Any suggestions? I have emailed Asus but don't know how their support is so I don't know when (or if) I'll get a response.
I was charging mine one day and it did it several times in a row, then I yelled at it and it stopped. The longer i've had it the less often it seems to happen though.
My device 16GB wifi has random reboot issue. It reboots so much time everyday.
I have done every possible way to solve my problem but no luck
Now in stock 4.3 (franco kernal) which gives less reboot than any other ROM.
1st i think, its a apps issue, soon i felt its not a app issue rather its a hardware issue. I have used 4.3, 4.4, 4.4.1, PA, CM, Slimbean, Slimkat, and many other roms and kernals , also i open back cover to solve reboot problem but no luck, reboot occurs as usual.
Also talk to google help center, give factory reset and they suggest me to send to RMA for replacement. I bought it by my cousin from US play store.
I am now outside of USA, so cant send to RMA now but i have cousin in usa who can help me to send it RMA.
Before doing that i want to know every details about RMA and how to send it from my cousin home? how much time would it take, Any cost for sending and receiving of the product (Any Courier charge)
Pls someone give details about RMA, I am kinda noob about that.....

Must have gotten a dud. Any ideas?

I ordered the Zenwatch during those few hours they were first available online at best buy. I picked it up yesterday and only have a few days left before I need to return my Sony Smartwatch 3. I want to decide between the two, and was leaning towards the Zen because of aesthetics and I actually like the charging cradle design.....
BUT, this watch lags like crazy and then freezes completely within a few minutes of booting. Even the very first time I turned it on, it took forget to register what I had selected for language. After rebooting, I got past that and it eventually installed a software update. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to help.
After 1 or 2 cycles of dimming the screen and being woken up, the watch freezes. The phone still thinks it is connected and I can feel it vibrate when swiping down to mute/unmute, but the graphics are frozen. The side drawer doesn't activate and the only way to shut it down is to hold the power button for 10sec or so.
I've done multiple "resets" on the watch and repaired the phone, but it keeps acting the same. Is there a hard reset for this watch? Anyone else experience this?
I'd exchange it at best buy but of course they are sold out so who knows how long before they can exchange it.
This happened to me when I had the 360. It froze when I was trying to turn it off. I eventually got it off, just like you did. It never responded the same afterwards. It would freeze at random times. I assumed it was the TI processor in the 360, but I hope this is not something to expect with AW. I took mine back to BB and got a refund so I could get this watch. I hope this is an isolated event.
All the reviews have been stellar and people have seemed happy even on the fortune, so I'm sure this is isolated.
I wonder if there is a way to reload the system software from the computer to the watch? Best buy is a no-go at this time. Sold out and unable to help aside from returning and refunding it.
Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
Based on the tracking status, I should get mine tomorrow. I'll let you know if I experience any funny business when I get mine up and running. Good Luck.
I really haven't noticed any significant lag. It's initially unresponsive sometimes which I attribute to an overly conservative cpu governor, but otherwise it's a pleasant experience.
I've had mine for almost a week now and definitely haven't seen those problems. There were updates to both the watch and phone app soon after starting up. Maybe you got a bad load on one of them. Have you tried the 'Resync apps' option from the Android Wear (Phone) settings menu? Have you tried the full factory reset of the watch? If so, sounds like dud might be the case. If of any significance, I'm connecting via a stock Sprint HTC One Max.
Yes, the watch did an update after the first successful boot, but it was laggy and had frozen during the language setup even the first time. I've done multiple factory resets to no avail, but it does not repeat the update with that (though it does require pairing to the phone again).
I wish I could manually reload the watch system software. I'm new to Android wear rooting, etc. Is it possible to manually completely reload the system software?
Yes, I've also tried the resync apps and have the latest phone software as well...

I would maybe try once with a different phone then call it a dud. I don't know enough about it either to go deeper than that.
Saga over. Returned the watch today after trying clean installs of everything last night. It would even freeze when not connected. Sucks to get a dud, but glad this seems to be a unique occurrence.
Trying out the LG G watch R (what a horrible name). Big and sporty instead of subdued, but nice nonetheless.

I was having similar issues but wanted a couple days with the watch before i posted, I just requested a RMA for the watch, love the look of it, but was having issues with random reboots, very laggy ui especially when browsing through watch faces..had one time where the watch actually locked up and required a hard reset via the button on the back..also got significant battery drain, 2 percent every it seemed 10 minutes....Hopefully the replacement is better than this one...I could live with some of the issues, but the random rebooting i can't deal with. If the 2nd is a dud mite get the sony, till then back to my trusty g watch.

Did you get your watch back? I have to send mine in too because the battery dies in 5 hours without even touching it. ASUS said it is a bug with the lollipop update so they are going to re-flash it. Also did you have to ship it yourself or did you get something in the mail.

Is this tablet stable? Mine crashes all the time.

:crying:
Hey - I got a like new Galaxy Tab S 32GB for $190 a few days ago. Theoretically a great device...
However, it crashes all the time. Just putting some load on it, even Google Maps search can force reboot it. Games like Iesabel or Shadowrun crash on start.
Is this normal with this thing or is there some internal damage? I rooted and to look at logs and found no issues and fresh installed the latest OS image via Odin but no change.
I am baffled a high end device would display such issues. My other tablets (cheapo Lenovo etc are all fine with these apps). Any tips?
I have a day or two to return this thing. Would love to keep it but realistically it's just too frustrating.
Thanks.

Yeah, loose battery connection is a big problem on the 8.4" and the odd 10.5" , bending the tablet can cause this problem, that is why the 8.4" is more affected, you have to be a giant to fit the 10.5" in your pants pocket.
