I bought the Galaxy Nexus about 2 - 3 months ago. A week ago the phone's GPS stopped working. I called Samsung and I sent the phone to them for repair. They said it is a BER (Beyond Economical Repair) due to corrosion / liquid damage. I can't imagine how would water got into the phone or how it only affected the GPS with everything else working. I really took a good care of the phone. I called technical support but they did not help me either.
I use the GPS a lot while travelling and I cannot live without it. Can someone tell me if there is anything left I can do? Is it possible to replace the GPS chip inside the phone ? should I get a bluetooth GPS ? I am kinda lost and feel unfortunate that this happens.
Download GPS status from the play store. See if you still get any satellites, if you at least get a few then most likely the gps.config file is missing some stuff.
Nothing shows up on GPS status. Always 0 / 0
Got exactly same problem but Samsung keeps saying that handset is OK. Sent 4 times got back with no results..... do not know what to do?

I got a gnex from play store in June 2012 and the GPS on it just wouldn't work. I
tried all the GPS patches a handful of custom ROM thinking ics could have been the problem. But nothing made the GPS work. GPS status showed 0/0 satellites.
In September I bought a second nexus for my wife and to my surprise and then anger, the GPS showed and locked almost instantly.
My point being, Samsung fixed the GPS chip on the newer models. If only they had done so when people complained all over the WWW regarding the GPS issue.

May I ask what date did you purchase your Galaxy Nexus?
UPDATE: I called Samsung multiple times and they told me that according to their policy water damage is not covered by warranty. I did not throw the phone in the toilet or in a lake. All sensors work including cellular radio, WiFi, BT, HSPA, 3G, NFC, multi-touch screen, proximity sensor, light sensor and USB works as well. It is ONLY the GPS that is not working.
The guy on the phone told me to go to Samsung.com and write an email to their customer service. The only link I got was Email the CEO. I thought this was kinda a joke but; nevertheless; I wrote an email and I sent it. Surprisingly, the next day I got a thorough response from Samsung. They offered me a one time courtesy fix for about $190 and a photo (attached) for the damage on the phone. Their point is that there is no way to pinpoint whether the damage was from them or from the user. BTW, I got the official car dock and an extended battery so I already spent some good money on this phone and the car dock is mainly for navigation as I use it a lot. I did not go with the fix as I thought it might be better just to hold off and wait for the next Nexus by late November.
Maybe if this issue is affecting other users Samsung would recognize that it is a manufacturer defect and offer us a fix under warranty.
That's the JTAG port..
They probably don't want to replace the whole motherboard as the GPS chip is on the board.. Then the JTAG port happened to be corroded, so they took the chance.
Will the next nexus have a longer screen?

Another unsatisfied VZW user. You guys have it rough.
Four times? You must break the spell!
If I were you I'd buy the next one thru authorized Verizon's Witch Doctor.
I've been offered the razr Maxx or whatever the highest gig iPhone is from Verizon to fix my issues. I'm very satisfied. I love my gnex I've just had so many issues I was curious if its my magically horrible luck or what.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I just got this gnex this weekend and have not had any problems. I upgraded from a Bionic. I'm just going through these forums to see what kind of problems to lookout for. I hope your luck gets better.

Thanks man. I'm glad to see the charging issue doesn't seem widespread.

I'm on my 3rd Nexus as well. First one the DAC half burnt out so I wasn't getting any audio through the earpiece and mic stopped working. Second one had faulty charging. Would charge it full and after in plugging it would still think it was charging and the phone would wake the screen by itself every so often causing huge battery drain.
The one I have now has a small problem but its tolerable. The speaker doesn't turn off immediately. There about a second or two of air and then when it does turn off it make a small pop sound.

My VZW Gnex has been fine. Every so often mine will drop a data connection, but so does every other LTE device. It's by no means wide spread.
I've been very pleased with mine so far. I'm glad to hear that Verizon is doing a good job of giving replacements to people with issues.
I have had charging issues where it thinks it is connected to charger, and keeped turning on the screen when idle. I also have problem with my headphone plug, where it sometimes thinks I have connected headphones which leads to no sound in the earspeaker and microphone turned off.
In addition I now have problems with sound only coming from one of the headphones when connected.
All this on the same phone, never returned it. Samsung QA really sucks...
Yea my charging issue is its just not charging 100% of the time. I have to do the BS bending the cord to the perfect spot

Guess I've been lucky.
I'm thinking pure coincidence unless VZW phones are made with different hardware and by someone else.
No hardware problems for me.

Clearly hardware issue if you've tried multiple SIMs.
Mine doesn't work. I was playing about 2 hours, locked it, went to see a friend, and when I took the mobile again, it was on "Google" logo, and never again passed from there. No Roms, no root, now I'm waiting Vodafone brings me a new one (Only 1 week old)
Well so much for great customer support. I called to get the phone sent and then they told me I could choose to receive a brand new phone in store. One guy flat out lied to me and told me that no stores within 50 miles had the phone then they had me on the phone for six hours before someone says we can only send a refurb so take it or dont. Horrible service yesterday so beyond less than pleased.

Hi all,
I recently sent my GN (Running 4.0.2 stock, yakju build) back to be repaired because my phones wifi stopped working. what happens is that the phone's wifi seems be stuck "turning on", but never actually does. No wifi icon or anything appears. wifi hotspot doesnt work either. I had my GN from about a week after it was released (I'm in australia so that was about the 22nd December), and around the 15th January is stopped working. This issue cannot be fixed with a reboot, a hard reset, flashing stock roms, toggling airplane mode or anything trivial like that, as I (and others) have tried.
Now i have searched a while on google while i have been without my phone and I'm finding this problem is surfacing for other people too. From what i have seen there seems to be a correlation between 4.0.2 and this issue. Also, it seems to happen some time into the phones life; they do not have this issue when first purchased. I am concerned that this may be a recurring issue which surfaces over time, due to a design flaw or some sort of software issue. If so, this problem will start affecting a lot more people. If anyone who reads this has the same problem, could you please post when it started occuring and what rom, build etc (and anything else which may be helpful) you are running so we can shed a little light on this issue. which many more users i am sure will experience. cheers in advance
just incase anyone actually reads this Galaxy Nexus was sent back, and it was found that the printed ciruit board (PCB) needed replacing. More forums have surfaced since i last checked up on this problem so numbers are slowly rising. Once again, post here if you get the issue, we need numbers
Hi same issue i have butni solve i am living in turkey and i use habertürk news and i saw this application make notification wifi turning om.i reset my phone i load factory firmware but nothing happen ...always say wifi turning on...you need to change your system language another still write wifi turning on on screen in eglish and a application cause to this like my haberturk app

same problem
Hi,
i had the same problem, wifi mac info was not showing anymore on the Nexus. Reboot and factory reset didn't help. Wifi wouldn't come on anymore.
Ask for a replacement, that's the only thing you can do
Can i ask what version of android you guys had? I'm wondering if this is going to be a recurring problem with hardware due to software issues or if it is purely a design flaw (PCB burning out, etc..) Cheers!
I have the same problem which happened last Saturday and it frustrated the hell out of me, i flashed to different versions of OS....didnt help...
restored to factory firmware and didnt backup the pictures and stuff on the phone!! (FML)
and brought it in to Fido on monday to have it serviced....
talking about bad luck...sigh....
they told me the turn around time is 10-15 business days... (N)
will report back once i hear from them
Before the issue happened, did your phone have any other issues? Say heating up while charging or running the WiFi?
I received a device in for repair with this issue and the customer reported it got really hot before the issue started happening. Everything looked fine on the motherboard - the WiFi antennas were intact. Reloading the software did nothing which means it's a hardware issue..
So very strange. I wonder what's causing this.
i remember when my wifi stopped working i was running 4.0.2. I was actually on holidays in Japan at the time and i was wifi hopping quite a lot around the airport (i was walking around and the wifi would go out of range, latch on again... etc) not sure if that had anything to do with it. Hopped on the plane home and i remember i was on airplane mode using an app called colornote. the phone hung pretty hard and i had to pull the battery. rebooted and tried again and after 10 mins, phone crashed again doing the same thing. Got home and the wifi wasnt working. Not sure if any of this had anything to do with it, but maybe. Didnt notice any overheating, but then again i was around snow haha
hi mrmiklepower
just wondering if your phone has been good since you got it back from repair?
i noticed the phone would reboot itself over and over again after i flashed it back to the stock rom. I just called the third party repair shop that my carrier sent the phone to, they told me its still being fixed.
Oh i hope they will return me my phone soon.
My phone is actually still being repaired also. It's been a total of 2 months since i sent if back! they contacted me and all i know so far is that the phones PCD needed replacing. when my phone arrives i will update as soon as i can. should receive it sometime this week, but its not certain. the majority of my ownership of this phone has been me waiting for its return
Holy mother of lord...
I actually called the third party repair shop that my carrier uses to check on the status of the repair. And they told me its actually In quality control which means the problem was fixed and they're just testing it before they send it back to the store where I brought the phone too. Hoping they'll send it in on Monday so I can either pick it up on the day of or the next day.....keeping my fingers crossed.
Will keep you posted on the status of it too.
Sigh
Ok I got my phone back today.
on the reference sheet I got from the repair shop
it states REPLACED PBA, BGA Failure
I looked it up online and PBA means Printed Board Assembly
which probably means the motherboard was defective and had to be replaced.
and now the phone is working fine. So i guess when this phone was made, there were some flaws with the motherboard on it, thus causing this problem.
Anyways, I hope this information helps with others who experience the same problem
Thanks for letting us know! O got mine back today with the same thing. So looks like there is no way of fixing besides sending it back. Good luck to anyone else who gets this problem

So it seems there's no fix for this?
I've been doing some research and it doesn't seem anyone can fix this.. I tried reflashing, wiping every possible thing, etc.. even flashing the stock software via odin. Still no luck.. It seems that we are indeed stuck with sending it back in for a supposedly defective part which seriously blows.
My other question is.. you guys who already received your phones back, did anyone end up with the problem again?
PLEASE if anyone knows how to fix this.. chime in!!!
I had an issue similar to that with my transformer and to fix it I just flash a new kernel im not sure itwill fix the problem for you but it's worth a try

Since getting my phone back the problem has not occurred again. I don't think there is anything that can be done as a component needed to be changed apparently. Good luck :/

Thanks, when returning to stock it flashes a new kernel. Also tried it again for the hell of it with faux's kernel, still no luck .
This sucks! This very same thing happened to me yesterday! I Odined back to stock.. no luck! Now after finding this thread, it looks like a hardware issue! That blows! I'll have to give Sprint a call tomorrow!
Hmm sucks to hear it's still cropping up around the place, I heard someone say this issue entered quality control. But anyway, if it helps I've had my phone back for about a month and a bit and its still going strong. hopefully it doesn't happen again though. good luck, hopefully it won't take too long for your phone to come back!
Hi,
I'm with Telus in Canada and had the exact same problem and had my GN repaired. It took only 2 weeks and I just got my unit back. I had already read a lot online about this issue so I asked the Telus rep to tell me what the issue was. She told me that the report states that the board was replaced. This is definitely a hardware problem. I'm hoping that the new board doesn't have this problem and my phone won't need to be repaired again,
I run 4.0.1 on my phone. Telus hasn't released an update yet. I was going to update mine by switching to yakju, but that's when I noticed that the wifi is not working and I thought it's not a good idea to change the stock ROM.
Noticed my golf gps app has burned in a little on my phone. Is there any way to correct this, any downloadable tools to fix it?
Anyone?
not really any fix that i've heard of. a few apps on the play store that claim they help/repair the issue. ultimately, burn in is burn in. you may want to contact a carrier service center to see if something like this is covered under the warranty. i could be wrong on all this. cheers
If not covered by the carrier, Samsung may be able to help with this issue. They have exchanged a TV for me for that issue.

thanks guys. my only concern with taking it to the carrier is that...don't they just give you a refurbished phone as a replacement? i did this exact same thing with my samsung focus two years ago also with AT&T, the replacement they gave me had more problems than the one i switched out. but after that warranty period expired i was stuck with it.
in my experience, refurb units 75% of the time restore the problem that made them a refurb to begin with. ghosting is a lot easier to deal with than, say, the touchscreen not responding. just not sure if the AT&T warranty is worth it, but would like to hear from others on their intel or experiences. thanks.
Anyone?
Ok this started last night, tablet has been working flawlessly for the last 6 months or more.
What happened was, I wasn't able to use the Internet. Just wasn't working. And every 20 seconds or so it would flash up at the bottom of the screen "connected to (my router)".
So I turned wifi off and on, which usually fixed connection issues, but didn't help. I also restarted router, even though my computer and my phone isn't having any issues.
So then I went to the wifi settings screen to see if there was any way to reset networks. What I saw was this:
If i turn wifi toggle on and watch the screen, it would scan for networks, find the list... Couple seconds pass... Then the toggle would switch itself off and back on! And then it would start looking and finding networks again, and then off and on, and etc etc.
I have tried a factory reset and cache reset.
I have also downloaded the 4.4.2 stock rom and installed using odin for a totally new install.
Still does it.
Any suggestions? Seems very strange. It's under warranty but it seems like an odd hardware fault, seems more like software but I dunno.
Help me xda, you're my only hope.
I've been searching the Internet all day trying to find someone else havin this problem... But I seem to be the only one. And noone seems to have any suggestions.
At the moment I'm having to consider a warranty dispute, but that means however many days/weeks without the tablet which I use on a daily basis.
Not ideal Samsung.

Hey. I had the EXACT same problem. Even made a video of it and showed it to the service point personell. Turning on off on again and again, it also displays in the settings the switch just switches itself without any action of mine. It was a hardware defect. send it in and get a new one, better than being annoyed by it. Mine did it on a 5-10sec interval length...

Yeh mines probably every 5-10 seconds...
So this is definitly a hardware fault? In which case I'll have to get in touch with john lewis and hope they will do an exchange in store. If it involves having to send it off to samsung and waiting for it..
Anyway thanks for replying to the question, shame it wasn't better news haha!

yeah sorry to be the one to tell you this is a faulty device but it seems like this unit ain't free of errors and there quality control is somewhat sketchy.
Which android version are you running? I am asking because I run kitkat and also have relatively ****ty battery life. I use it for university so I have the screen on and write notes during lectures. Usually it lasted 7-8hours but for about a week or two it now only lasts 4-5 hours of screen time which is really ****ty.
I read somewhere that this might be a motherboard issue and if it is it might be somewhat corellated to our wifi problem. In my case they replaced the wifi module and gave me back my "old" device but this is having bad battery life so I am thinking about sending it in (again). I did however root so I would have to make use of the warranty provided by the seller, not samsung itself, since my knox is tripped.
(in Germany the sellers also must provide 6months - 2 years of warranty and there was a judgement in Europe that rooting must not have any influence on wether your device still is under warranty or not. sadly this only applies to the warranty provided by the seller, not the manufacturer)
Is your BT on and are you connected to a 2.4 GHZ network?
If so, turn off BT
I get random WiFi disconnects and reconnects from 2.4 GHZ networks when BT is on but not connected. Though, Ive never noticed the wifi switch going off and on.
I am running 4.4.2 or whatever, kitkat anyway.
Bluetooth is off, I never use it on my tablet. I dunno what network type I'm running, might be N or might be B/G, but whatever it is it what it has been for months as I havent changed any router settings lately.
I have restarted the router twice already in case this was a network problem, but the network wouldn't cause the wifi to toggle off and on, it would just cause disconnects etc. Least I assume so. I may try this just in case but like I said the network type hasn't changed lately
John Lewis are saying they won't exchange it, it will have to be sent off to Samsung for "repair". Meaning I'll probably get sent back a refurbished second hand one with a dodgy light bleed screen, as I expect they have hundreds of those lying around now.
Oh and it'll be up to 28 days. For a premium and expensive device that's less than 6 months old this just isn't good enough.

I had mine replaced as well but dont remember wether I got a new one or just my old one repaired... should have written down the IMEI I guess :-/
you're from Bristol, don't the EU rights apply there? If so your retailer should be obliged to replace or repair the device.

Hey all,
My Note 5 suffers from a terrible bluetooth connection. If the Wifi is connected the phone needs to be within a few inches of the Bluetooth device for any connectivity. If the Wifi is not connected, it can be within 10 feet, but still not much more than that. This thread on AndroidCentral shows a lot of other users with the same issue http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-note-5/570201-note-5-bluetooth-issue-5.html
I've tried all the fixes including a factory reset to no avail. I want to take it to AT&T and see if they will do a warranty replacement.
The issue is that the front glass is cracked. Just a slight fracture on the bottom near the back key, not enough to pay for a repair in my mind. How will AT&T respond? Will they outright refuse to address the Bluetooth issue because of the cracked screen? I'm willing to pay for the repair, but samsung asked for $250, which is steep for what needs fixing. (I realize the entire screen needs to be replaced, hence the cost, so I'm not arguing the cost, just not worth it when the crack is barely noticable for me). Just wondering if anyone has had experience with AT&T handling an issue like this. It wouldn't surprise me if they outright rejected me since how do they know the BT issue isnt' caused by the crack (it's not, was happening since day one, just affects me now that I have a smartwatch).
i would call them and then complain, if you go into the store im pretty sure theyll deny repair because of the screen or say its not covered by warranty. be VERY persistent about getting a replacement. say some bs story lol

Thanks for the advice. Honestly, I'd be totally fine if they sent it to Samsung and specified "just repair bluetooth board" and left the screen as is. Ideally, it'd be great if they just sent me a refurb and I got lucky with the screen. But the Bluetooth issue is far worse for me. The screen really only will affect me when I go to sell it next year, since again, the crack is a hairline across the back button.
My worry would be that I get them to accept the return/repair over the phone, they get my phone back and see it cracked and send me a ridiculous bill. Not sure what my recourse then would be.
I have had nothing but good experiences going in to the at&t device support center. They plug the device in to check it out and can give you a replacement device in the spot. Just be very polite!

I had the same exact problem. I called ATT and they sent me a new device, and I sent my phone off in a box they sent me. Problem solved....
I can second this. I had major Bluetooth issues with my day 1 note 5 but just recently did a warranty swap and am having no Bluetooth issue now.

Same here. Bluetooth was more than fine up until yesterday, and then just all of a sudden bottomed out. This is the second time for me. First went from launch to about a month ago. This one worked perfectly for a month.
I just can't figure out what could possibly trigger it. It's almost like something burns out or something.
