hello all
its been awhile since i've been on here but thought i'd start a thread since others may be having my same issue.
i'm on tmobile and still have the super awesome T-Zones Unlimited Web, $5.99/mo data plan.
i have not purchased any phones from tmobile in the last 3 years (all have been unlocks or off carrier unlocked: iphone 3gs, nexus one, bb from att, etc).
this last few weeks i bought an unsubsidized HTC HD7 from tmobile and got full 3G data without any problems. i returned the HTC HD7 last week and in turn got another unsubsidized Tmobile G2. the first day i was able to get on the web fine, however the 2nd day i was not able to get any data services to work on it; only wifi worked.
popped my sim back into my nexus one and got my usual 2mbs speeds and access to android market. put it back in G2, no internet and getting tzones unavailable upsell page. just mentioning service is down.
anyone else having problems specifically w/their G2 on Tzones? all of my other non tmobile devices work fine. are they IMEI blocking our devices??
thanks all!
btw, i am rooted and also am now running the modaco custom rom
have u tried changing the apns in the connection settings page?

apns
yup, tried the usual suspects. internet2.voicestream.com, internet3.voicestream.com, wap.voicestream.com.
same results, but again ONLY on my G2. nexus one and iPhone are fine. ??
tmobile knows you have a g2 based on the IMEI, they will force you to pay for a android data plan.
You have no way around it with a tmobile android device. The best you are going to get is the $20 preferred android plan.
thats what i was thinking. i wonder if i bought one off of ebay would it matter? if not, i'm prob going to return it since i still get full 3G on my nexus one and tethering for the $5.99 /mo
best bet probably to stick with nexus
The HD7 didn't have an issue with the data plan?
Did you switch the phone listed on your account? also you could try spoofing the user agent on the browser...

Yeah, only the android phones have this issue. Switching the phone model listed on my account remedied that

Unforntuately it was removed a stupid rep removed it after being grandfathered in. but... I had it working on my MTS. I would get the same error about switching plans on browser and I would change my pphone model and it would disappear. i'm currently on a $20 data plan w/ messaging ($5 bucks cheaper/got it after *****ing about the stupid rep removing my old data plan without permission) for android but it might be worth to try switching models. it worked for me 4 months ago...
Yes, the HTC HD7 got full 3G data on tzones ($5.99/mo) w/o any problems. seems like android phones sold by tmobile won't work and in turn they upsell you an 'android' data plan when i know for a fact that tzones works just fine w/android (ie my nexus one purchased unlocked from google).
i tried changing my phone type in my account to unlisted but had no luck. my nexus one and iphone 3gs were fine w/the epc.tmobile.com apn and have not had any issues. imo it seems like imei blocking since they have the full database of imeis for their own G2s where my nexus one was direct from google and iphone was at&t and not compatible 3G.
i probably should have set my phone type to unlisted and let it stay as that for a day but figured it prob wouldn't work anyways and i wanted to return phone in the 14day timeframe. loved the phone and may get one online and see if that matters (not tied to my line, imei wise and prev account may have had proper plan so option is turned on for device; speculating on last bit).
any other T-Zones success / fail stories w/the G2??
i just ended up returning my G2.
I tried it when the G1 came out. I used an iphone forever and didn't wanna upgrade from the tzones hack lol. in the end, tmobile has the cheapest rates possible. I had to leave the tzones behind after 4 years of it never failing, due to android

They DO have a list of IMEI's that they go by.
No matter where you get your G2 from, if you don't have a android plan you will get the update message and have to get a android plan. Non tmobile android phones and all windows mobile smartphones have always worked with the tzones plan, for some reason tmobile doesn't care enough about WM to enforce it, and they really can't imei filter on non tmobile android devices. This has been discussed to death over the years on howardforums.

makes sense w/imeis. just wanted to confirm that others had similar experience. glad i got my unlocked nexus one from google
that phone sure has held its own this whole year! G2 is nice though. if i could have used on my tzones i would have kept it too! (had it rooted, custom modaco rom on it and all)
Just pay stop been cheap. Lol

hehe, with the way i go through unlocked phones, i have to be cheap somewhere. ended up with a Galaxy Tab instead and using the Nexus One as main phone.
20 some days after this
same thing seems to be happening to me, i have been using a Htc touch pro 2 for about 1 YEAR, i got initially a "Pay By the Month" plan in early 2010, it was:
- $40 Even More Plus™ 500 Talk with FlexPay®
- $10 Unlimited Web for Phones with FlexPay
It wouldnt work with my touch pro 2, but then i discovered that you can put an APN (internet2.voicestream.com) to get it working, i did that and set that i was using a Motorola razr in the my tmobile account, and it did work, then i stop paying the monthly charge to see if i would still have the internet working, and surpisingly it kept working, so for a whole year i used the internet.. in the month of december i noticed that my internet speed got faster all the suden, from downloading at 26 kbps to 120 kbps so i thought, wow this is so cool, and decided to buy the G2, they just delivered to my house yesterday ( Jan 21 2011 ) i got it because they had a promotion of get a 2 year contract with tmobile and get g2 for free ( promotion that only lasted 2-3 days), and so as soon as it arrived i put my sim card of the touch pro 2 to the G2, did set the apn, it worked, but after 3-4 hours, it stopped working, it shows "Subscription Upsell Required" but if i put the sim card back to the Touch pro 2 the internet works.
i have not done anything as far as Rooting Flashing Unlcoking to my G2, but as you guys were saying it may have to do with the IMEI :/
does anybody have a solution?

Its the imei. They trace it to match an android device and you must have the android data plan to get internet working. There is no workaround unfortunately...
How about Editing the Imei of the phone, i've seen some threads about it, but it's illegal isnt?
i'm willing to take tha chance :}
where to go?
I currently do not have cell service because I cannot justify the expense right now. I spend most of my time at home right now, but I am working on getting a small home business started soon and will be out on the town quite a bit. I need to be reachable and have internet access at all times, and I think a mobile hotspot may be my best option for now.
I currently use Groove IP for all of my calls, so I do not need voice service. Is there an affordable (read less than 50 per month) prepaid mobile hotspot out there? (I live in Indiana, btw)
Thx!

I can confirm that this app gives the Razr M Wifi HotSpot/Tether with no root and no VZW tethering on the account...
You have to change the device profile to Samsung ICS though. I connected my Kindle Fire with no issues and it requires infrastructure mode for Wifi connections.
Not responsible for how you decide to use this...
This is a 2 day trial and then $10 one time purchase

I've read in an artical a while ago. Verizion has to let everyone have free tether because of a chunk of spectrum they bought that came with strings attached, and then the FTC was "No Verizon, you can't charge them twice for the same amount of data"

Given that most people that upgrade phones also renew their contract, verizon knows that tethering means more money for them since all the new plan have data packages that are not unlimited.
Verizon no longer cares.
If you're on the new share everything plans, you can tether with the native app anyway.
I would also like to confirm this working. seems odd with the samsung part but it works
My phone is on a corporate plan with 2GB data. I can't get either program mentioned here to work. Other device can't get IP address. Sees the phone just fine in both cases.

Hey all, well I been wanting the new Virgin Overdrive MiFi dongle. It's $35 monthly for 2gb of 3G, and unlimited 4G. Well I only have their 3G in my area, so let's just say it's $35 for the 2gb of data.
Well... I seen the One V for $120. I know a guy who is selling one for $90.
If I root it, will it tether Wi-Fi, WITHOUT paying the $15 to Virgin for tethering?
And if so, then will there be any negatives to it, compared to the Overdrive?
I tethered Wi-Fi on my HTC Inspire, and ran great. But curious about this phone.
I seen for $35 monthly, I get 300 minutes, and unlimited 3G and 4G. Well that's the same price as the overdrive monthly, but UNLIMITED data!
And no I don't need the phone, so I can just keep it in my pocket, and enable tethering when I need to access the web.
Needs a custom Rom(not hard to do)and it will tether and you get WiFi everywhere and a phone to listen to music play games take pics etc. Idk about the speeds of the two internet devices but my 3g is enough to surf the web not blazing speed but fast enough for Facebook Google YouTube etc. I'm guessing the WiFi hotspot has the same speeds so in my opinion go with the phone it's a nice one too so a plus all around and you don't have to pay extra to tether but it should be known after 2.5gb virgin mobile "slows" data speeds so it's pretty much unusable, I've never gone over it but you should know that.

Okay thanks so much, that's what I figured.
And you think the phone will have just as good 3G signal as the Overdrive? I didn't know if it'd get better signal, hence it being ONLY internet, no phone, etc.
But yeah basically I could root that One V phone, and pay $35 a month for unlimited (2.5GB till slower), but the Overdrive would cost the same, and it's ONLY 2GB, and then NO data after I use that. Atleast with the phone, it'll still have slower data, in case I really need it.
Am I correct? Just checking before I pay $90+
Well I went with the One V, in case anyone is wondering. I'll post when I root it, and hopefully it will have nice 3G speeds in my area.
$15 tethering is not an option for Virgin Mobile One V
I have had a Virgin Mobile MiFi card for abut two years and an HTC One V for about three months. I was hoping to use the One V as a hotspot and get rid of the MiFi card. Unfortunately, I still use both the MiFi and the One V. This is due to the fact that I am lazy. I enjoy rooting and modding a phone about as much as I enjoy taking apart my car's dashboard to connect one simple wire. I seem to have lost my enthusiasm and attention span for this sort of work about ten years ago.
In any case, when considering the purchase of a Virgin Mobile One V keep in mind that even if you want to, Virgin Mobile will not let you pay them $15 per month to use the One V as a hotspot. They only offer that option for their more expensive models. I totally assumed VM would be happy to take my additional money every month when I made my purchase. Despite the fact that the HTC One V is perfectly capable of acting as a hotspot when it is used with other carriers, Virgin Mobile blocks this capability.
So, I will be very interested to find out whether you succeed in making the One S work as a hotspot reliably after you root it and install a new ROM. I have only seen reports of troubles -- but, of course forums can represent a pretty biased sample of experiences. Personally I have failed to make my One S work as a hotspot (or as a weirdo bluetooth dialup kludge) with FoxFi -- with or without rooting. I have also failed to make the hotspot work after rooting and enabling the built-in hotspot feature. I am not sure whether I want to go to the trouble of doing a custom ROM to see if it fails too.
I continue to carry around a MiFi 2200 grandfathered in at $20 per month to use with my tablet. It is one more device to carry, keep charged, and pay for.
Again, I would sure appreciate a follow up on your experience, either positive or negative.
Thanks!

Thanks for your post. I just unlocked the bootloader, and rooted it. Now gonna flash a custom ROM, and then I will report back here.
I have the htc one v and i had the pacman 19.3 ROM installed on my phone and i could successfully use tethering, the speeds weren't great, but they were good enough for me to use my tablet. This rom is my favorite so far (I've ran CM10, AOKP, MIUI, Xperia One) but it's so great because it combines aokp cm10 and paranoid android into one super rom. I'd recommend using that. If you do choose to run PACman make sure you go with 19.3 and NOT 19.9. 19.9 is still a bit buggy and is being worked on, Use 19.3 for now. Hope this helps
You actually don't need a custom ROM to get tethering to work on the One V. As long as you are rooted, you can install http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ on any ROM, stock included, and tethering will work perfectly through that.
Hi guys,
I am still on rooted pixel 3 with enabled tethering on old Verizon Unlimited plan. Time flies and I think it is time to upgrade my phone. I am thinking about 6 PRO maybe later this year if there are some good discounts with 7 coming up in a few month.
Is there a way to enable hot spot tether from 6 PRO without rooting the phone or it's still the only way to bypass hotspot tethering check from cell provider? Being able to use hotspot on my old plan is the only thing I really care about at this point.
It's been a while and I am sure a lot has changed.
Thanks.

It's been a few years but PDAnet worked pretty well for me on an old Verizon unlimited plan. Random disconnects but overall it was pretty handy and the "hide tethering" option seemed to do just that. Bandwidth wasn't great though.
I've since switched to Visible, hotspot/tethering is included and stable but it's throttled @ 4Mbs for me.
Good luck!
