i'm off on holiday in a couple of days from the uk i'll still be in europe but i know if i use the internet it will kill me when i get the bill. so i rang t-mobile to see if they had any boosters for using internet abroad but they only had one's for talk and text. he explained to me it would be best to turn off the 3G while i'm away so that way the phone will not try to connect to the internet. so if i disabled the 3G connection would this also stop the HSPA (or whatever it's called) connection also or do i need disable this also. the hotel i'm staying at does have a wirless connection which i'm looking at to use if i want to browse or send e-mails, if i do this would be ok as i'm not using the t-mobile internet so there would be no charge. i just need some advice from someone who has been in the same posistion as this is my first android phone so i'm still a bit green with them. thanks
just turn off mobile internet and all will be fine.
t-mob has a flexible internet booster if u really need it http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/pay-monthly/boosters/
Just make sure roaming is off, you can keep everything else enabled. Try and find free wifi spots to download emails etc.

You have been misinformed!
T-Mobile have probably the best mobile data rates for any UK network when roaming in Europe.
See here.
Note the countries that this is available in - if you are in one of these countries, when you try to use mobile internet you will be redirected to a page where you can select your Euro broadband booster which is then added to your bill if you are on contract, or taken from your balance if you PAYG.

Dave
thanks for all the replies, i did tjought it was odd that t-mobile did not have an internet booster package. it is not listed in the options when you call 150 to t-mobile but it needs more looking into. as i said in my first post the hotel has a wireless connection so even if i can just jump on that it's still better than nothing. last year i took my netbook which was a bit of a pain, but we had one raint say early on in the holiday and i ended up downloading alot of episodes of rubbish from my newsgroup account and that killed my allowance of the wireless connection from the hotel. oh by the way it's only italy i'm going to. thanks again...................sudeki300
i have just had a look and one link is for broadband and the other is internet, so i think i would need the inernet one as the broadband one is quite expensive £40 for 200MB use over a month, where the internet one is only £10 for 50MB over a month. as i am only there for two weeks how long woiuld 50MB last for just browsing and e-mail. that's with no widgets on................sudeki300

Not long - IMHO, you will use more than 50mb in two weeks. Try downloading a net counter application and "simulate" how much you might use your phone over a few days to get a better idea of your data usage. Personally, I know my data usage would go over 200mb in week, but I use my phone for work emails.
Bear in mind though that if you buy 50mb, it will stop working once you go over and you can buy another booster.

Dave

thanks for the reply dave, to tell you the truth i would only be using the internet while i'm at the hotel and as they have a wireless connection it would be better just to use theirs. the last time i was there i downloaded two seasons of a show at 300MB's each at eight episodes each season before my allowance run out, so by browsing and e-mailing i should be ok for two weeks. the 200MB option on the booster is £40 that is just too expensive, that's 2 months of my broadband connection at home. oh, if you was wondering why i was downloading tv shows while on holiday the reason is i cannot understand italian which is a bit naughty as i'm half italian. thanks..................sudeki300
So i got tired of paying 190 a month for my phones and made the plunge for the gsm nexus and tmobiles 30 a month plan. I am looking to use a voip system to hopefully not go over my new 100 min plan. I plan on trying this over 3g and am wondering what people recommend for voip solutions for there phone. I have tried groove ip but discovered I had terrible latency. Any tips? Thanks!
Just get the unlimited $50 plan from simple mobile. Either way every gsm company has a data limit of like 2-3gbs and then they slow u down

Data is the reason to go with the $30 T-Mobile plan, you get 5gb before slow down.

VOIP is just never going to be as consistent or useful as the regular cell network calls, especially if you're talking about calls over HSPA+. Its unfortunate but it is how it is right now. Any VOIP solution you find will be a convoluted hack to help you get by if you're close to your monthly usage limit, and really shouldn't be relied on as your main source of calls. Don't get this plan expecting to make 800 minutes of calls every month using VOIP. The $30 T-Mobile plan is a fantastic value if you truly don't make a lot of calls (or have a land line at home), but its definitely not for everyone.
Hop over to a plan with unlimited calls if you need to make a lot of calls every month. Straight Talk $45, Net10 $50, Simple Mobile $50, T-Mobile $60/$70 are all good options, and are still drastically cheaper than carrier plans.
If you're interested in VOIP though, they've dove into it for dozens of pages here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646755
I can say that the call quality on Straight Talk Sim Att is great and its not that much more than Tmo per month. Calling is unlimited. Att coverage isn't as good as VZW but its pretty darn close for me. Well worth the $45+ per month I am saving over VZW.

People keep saying Straight Talk has a 2GB cap like it's gospel. This really isn't the case. It depends on your usage over the month and the network saturation of other ST users in your area. Lots of people Regularly push 3GB per month. It's just not set in stone.
Well I need closer to 5 to make this usable. So straight talk or simple mobile? What are the recommendations? I can confirm... VOIP=Not really usable for day to day use.

Out of those two if you need 5GB I'd suggest Simple Mobile, but I doubt you'll be able to consistently go that high (Simple Mobile was bought by Straight Talk a couple months ago). If you need to have 5GB of guaranteed data you need to either use the $30 T-Mobile plan and pay for minute overages, or go with the $70 T-Mobile plan. No one else will guarantee that much data.
I can confirm... VOIP=Not really usable for day to day use.

As is the case for most people.
Why do you need 5 gigabytes to make it usable? Are you streaming a lot, do you not have access to WiFi, are you downloading large files? I was using 3 to 5 when I was on Verizon but found myself using way less when I started managing my data use.

If you can get by until next month you might try Solavei they are launching Sept 21 and have unlimited data, talk and text. You get 4 Gb of 4G data then unlimited at 2G/edge. Many other features and benefits as well. I'm using Solavei now and it is the best thing I have tried so far. I hope to do a full review next week sometime. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.
I do a lot of surfing, a lot of streaming of Pandora, I have a stupid long commute so I also download a lot of apps and ROMs via my connection. So between simple mobile and straight talk, everyone prefers simple mobile it looks like. I just don't want to be kicked off
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I drive an hour to work everyday so I can understand wanting to stream music. I just rip radio streams off the internet to my computer over WiFi then transfer to my phone as local music. Haven't tried with Pandora.
You are going to have to pick up a WiFi connection somewhere with straight talk or simple if downloading large rom files and streaming a lot. You could always just leave proxy blank in APN setting and hope they don't notice.
I would give the $30 tmo a try with VoIP. Its only $30. Maybe the call quality will be good enough for you who knows. You can use Google voice or talk for free messaging if you need too.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Most of my calls are unimportant (I.E., family/friends). So I was able to make PBxes.org + SipDroid work very well for outgoing calls reliably over 3g/4g and Wifi (if I wasn't moving past cell towers). For 'real' calls to the bank and such, I just used up the 100 minutes allocated to me.
Recently, I switched to paying ~$2-5/month extra through VOIP.MS for way better VOIP calling. I can even call on 2G (edge) reliably. Though I am still working on it a bit more to really configure it well and I might be using extra battery atm since it uses UDP instead of TCP connections... So again a work in progress.
This thread, as mentioned earlier is helpful:
[INFO][GSM] Own Your Cell Service ..with Prepaid and the Galaxy Nexus [UPDATED 5/24]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455014
However, this thread is the bread and butter for configuring VOIP imo. There was heavy discussion near the last 5-20 pages, but I would start with the first post and 6th post(the FAQ post).
[GUIDE] Smartphone Service for just $30/month
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646755
VOIP works fine imo and worst case, they go to my GVoice voicemail and I call them right back, at least with my newer setup using VOIP.MS.
I've used the $30/mo plan since March and just recently picked up 4 months of prepay for $28.50/month (notice no tax and 5% more savings). The savings of a $45/mo plan for unlimited talk is ~$180/year (assuming a little more then 28.50/mo due to my VOIP.MS being another $2-5/month). I am willing to sacrifice a little on missed calls for that kind of extra savings.
Enjoy!
@stelv, please excuse my ignorance. What is the function of the APN on a gsm phone? I come from being on vzw forever.
Also, simple mobile use T-Mobile? I'm leaning towards straight talk att. Discovering T-Mobile really sucks in north Idaho :-/ hopefully I won't use over 3GB....

I currently use simple mobile $40 plan but I just saw this guy on walmart.com tmobile prepay plus you get tmobiles 4g up to 5 gb unthrottled for 30 bucks that totally beats paying 40 to get 3g and be cut off after 2-3 gb of data usage. Dont know if anyone has posted this before just figured I would put it out there for people because its a pretty damn good deal if you don't use many minutes

I have this plan on S3 After 5Gigs boom ''Up to 2G Speeds'' You won't be able to load a website, seriously, but when on HSPA+ I got as high as 18Mbit near tower
I switched to this from Sprint. You can also get it on T-Mobile's website - but not in stores.
Very happy. I looked at my average minutes per month and it was about 100 each month when including ones that didn't "count" toward my stated pool. Now I can pay a lower monthly fee and be able to not only do the calling I did before, but have a phone that does so much more than just make calls and text.
I get 4G in the city, only GPRS at work - although it's sometimes more reliable than our WIFI - so I'm not complaining (need to speed test it, it's slow but not unbearable).
When I was looking into it, one thing people mentioned was that you can use calls over data/wifi (VOIP etc) to make up for the 100 minute limit.
i've been using this plan($30 5gb unl txt 100 minutes) for over a year and i use skype for the voice calling(IIRC is a little under $3) for a total of about $33 and change a month. absolutely loving it. you can also just use just about any kind of voip but skype seems to be the most maintstream.
I actually used GooveIP on a loaner phone from a friend while I had no actual cell service - and on the SG3 before activating it.
Free and easy - you use Google Voice along with it as well, essentially making it a fully-featured phone just only able to function with a wifi connection. I know people that have gone "all the way" and dropped cell service for a wifi-only device, but I'm a bit too paranoid for that.

How would I change to this plan from the T-Mobile website?
I was entertaining this $30/mo 100/5GB plan, but have decided to go nearly all wifi. I only use the phone for checking voicemails, very rarely for calls, as I've tended towards Skype and GrooveIP for calls, but honestly I have nearly all my contacts using Heytell (voice 'walkie-talkie' uses data only) and they LOVE it...it's practically the only way we talk to one another anymore. I'll use my pay-as-you-go SIM with cheap minutes(Gold Membership already, my 1000+minutes are good for a year), for the rare cellphone call, and buy the Hotspot from Wallyworld, giving me 60 day data access (3.5GB) for $35...making my monthy cost around $20 month (approx. 17 data, 3 on SIM). Obviously, I'll use my wifi at home for music/Netflix, pretty much as I always have.

Hey guys, I've been following FreedomPop for a while, and they finally have support for using around 10 different Sprint phones. They are working to support more and maybe we'll be able to use the Optimus G with FreedomPop soon!
Just wanted to share my excitement for being able to literally paying nothing for basic phone usage (200 free min., 500 free texts, and 500 MB of free data)
If you guys ever go with with FreedomPop, just make sure to look through all your account options and read the small print
(They have to make money some ways)
Here's the link to their home page:
http://www.freedompop.com/home.htm
You can put in your phone's meid to find out if it's compatible at the moment.
How's your experience with them been so far?
They use Sprint's coverage. The 200 mins are all VoIP and some say it counts toward the 500mb data. Also, there's a $3.99/mth charge to get "fast" data.
I haven't worked with FreedomPop before, as I have been waiting for my phone to be supported.
My grandfather uses one of their hotspots (I don't remember which one) and when he came over, I tested it out.
When I used it, pages loaded faster than I would expect for a 3G connection. I would say the speed was comparable to the free wifi at a library/cafe or places like Barnes & Noble and Starbucks.
Of course, the last time I used it was months ago, so they probably improved some things.
As I said before, to use FreedomPop without paying anything, you will be running a very basic plan. (Not really a "plan", it's pay as you go)
The only thing that will cost the big bucks will be additional data, but both unlimited talk and unlimited text are much cheaper than any other service provider, aside from Republic Wireless, which is really bringing their A-game into the wireless world.
And once again, read everything! FreedomPop offers a bunch of paid services like rollover data. You may need to manually opt out of these things in order to not be charged.
Tried to sign up.

Yes, not every location is supported at the moment.
When they just launched, the service wasn't available in Princeton, but soon after it was.
As with the phones that can be brought over, they are are working on extending support to more areas.
Once using the service though, any area near a Sprint tower should have a signal.
I'm usually around wifi networks, so their minimalist free plan is definitely something I'm looking forward to on this phone.

Uuuuuh no. Don't believe me, that's fine, go do some reading for yourself. Tmobiles not a backyard company who's multi billion dollar network can't handle a measly 113gb. Yes I ran into this issue with the Note 3 and Note 4, but I started using FoxFi and it's been working fine on my Note 4 for the past week.
I just made my tethering mod for this new lollipop for my wife's Note 3, and yesterday I wound up using her 3gb tethering and then I got blocked by the Tmobile message, and tried it again just a few moments ago, and to my surprise it was working again,
She doesn't like me messing with her phone, so I have to wait till she is asleep to play with it.
So it is working with lollipop with FoxFi. I will keep playing with it and see what happens. It is in testing stages.
I wasn't able to make my rom work with @dsixda kitchen, so i was using @mastergrillo stock rom and edited a few files and its working with @jovy23 turorial, that's how I've been able to make things work. I need permission from @mastergrillo to use his rom before I can post the Tethering Mod Rom.
I tried it last night and the only thing that wont tether is signing into the ps4 network but Netflix and YouTube works just fine, also tethering to a laptop. So it does look like they're finding a way to block it. But the thing is I never got a message from Tmobile saying that I used up my 5gb of data. Very weird

Using a built-in hot-spot to tether is not a big deal as long as you use it accordingly and for the purpose it was meant.
2.5 G of data is plenty for the average user powering a tablet, laptop or media player on the go or outdoors away from a wifi signal.
It comes in handy while on long road trips and the misses wants to watch some Netflix or Amazon prime.
But trying to run your entire household off of T-Mobile's network is kind of lame, I guess that this over tethering abuse is OK with XDA and when you least expect it T-mobile is going to make a case of it and drag somebody into court and the lawyers will have a field day with it.
If you're allowed 2.5gb and you want to use 200+gb, technically it can be called "theft of services" , give yourself peace of mind and buy some Internet service from a provider, 30 or 40 dollars a month isn't such a hardship.
I personally use it sparingly but really appreciate having it to use and not abuse.

The problem is that for the 2.5GB data users paid for, there is only 500MB allowed for tethering.
Users want to use their paid 2.5gb data, either on the phone or using tethering, because they already pay for the 2.5gb data and they should be able use their paid data the way they want.

According to the plan comparison chart on t mobile site you can tether all of your data quota except for the unlimited plan where you are capped at 5G, which makes some sense.
I would very much like to have the freedom to learn how to bypass tether restrictions but at the same time running an entire household worth of data off t mobile network isn't right. Just imagine what AT&T would do to you if you used 100G on their LTE plan.
Please don't get me wrong, I'm not giving a moral lecture. I am making a practical point. We all switched from AT&T or Verizon because we like what T Mobile is doing. If we abuse the system T Mobile will fail and we will have to go back to AT&T. I make a living designing telecom electronics for a company you all know so I can tell you with 100 percent confidence that if we all run our entire home Internet on t mobile network it will break and they will have to reduce the data rate for every one. It's a simple application of the available bandwidth, Shannon's theorem, and the number of users in a given cell.
So as a practical issue, let's figure out how to by pass tethering and then use it responsibly.
Pretty much. I'm not saying hey let's just use up tmobiles data and run it as much as we can. Just because some might be OK with using less than 5 GB a month doesn't mean everyone uses it the same amount. And yes its very possible to run up 5gb of data in just a few hours of watching Netflix in one night. I work from 6am -9pm every day. When I get home, I just wanna watch some Netflix, youtube and sleep. Netflix just happens to have the HD feature which runs up data like crazy. I can't justify paying Comcast or others another data fee just to watch TV a few hours of the night. Having said that, I'll make sure to use an extra 5gb next month for each of you in here that want to preach to me.
