$30 unlimited text, web 5 gb unthrottled and 100 minutes - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I currently use simple mobile $40 plan but I just saw this guy on walmart.com tmobile prepay plus you get tmobiles 4g up to 5 gb unthrottled for 30 bucks that totally beats paying 40 to get 3g and be cut off after 2-3 gb of data usage. Dont know if anyone has posted this before just figured I would put it out there for people because its a pretty damn good deal if you don't use many minutes
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tmobile-30-Wireless-Airtime-Card/15443357

I'd seriously thought about moving to that... but ended up doing something different.

what did u end up going with?

I use net10 with there tmobile sim... 4g is fast and unlimited calling and text... First month i used close to 5gb and my data was never throttled... I used the tmobile $30 plan but when i got throttled i could not deal with the slow speeds so i switched to net10

Only 100 minutes of talk for a whole month? Can't do. I use around 450. Not including nights and weekends

Does net10 cut you off after 5gb or throttle?

I have this plan on S3 After 5Gigs boom ''Up to 2G Speeds'' You won't be able to load a website, seriously, but when on HSPA+ I got as high as 18Mbit near tower

I switched to this from Sprint. You can also get it on T-Mobile's website - but not in stores.
Very happy. I looked at my average minutes per month and it was about 100 each month when including ones that didn't "count" toward my stated pool. Now I can pay a lower monthly fee and be able to not only do the calling I did before, but have a phone that does so much more than just make calls and text.
I get 4G in the city, only GPRS at work - although it's sometimes more reliable than our WIFI - so I'm not complaining (need to speed test it, it's slow but not unbearable).
When I was looking into it, one thing people mentioned was that you can use calls over data/wifi (VOIP etc) to make up for the 100 minute limit.

i've been using this plan($30 5gb unl txt 100 minutes) for over a year and i use skype for the voice calling(IIRC is a little under $3) for a total of about $33 and change a month. absolutely loving it. you can also just use just about any kind of voip but skype seems to be the most maintstream.

I actually used GooveIP on a loaner phone from a friend while I had no actual cell service - and on the SG3 before activating it.
Free and easy - you use Google Voice along with it as well, essentially making it a fully-featured phone just only able to function with a wifi connection. I know people that have gone "all the way" and dropped cell service for a wifi-only device, but I'm a bit too paranoid for that.

How would I change to this plan from the T-Mobile website?

I was entertaining this $30/mo 100/5GB plan, but have decided to go nearly all wifi. I only use the phone for checking voicemails, very rarely for calls, as I've tended towards Skype and GrooveIP for calls, but honestly I have nearly all my contacts using Heytell (voice 'walkie-talkie' uses data only) and they LOVE it...it's practically the only way we talk to one another anymore. I'll use my pay-as-you-go SIM with cheap minutes(Gold Membership already, my 1000+minutes are good for a year), for the rare cellphone call, and buy the Hotspot from Wallyworld, giving me 60 day data access (3.5GB) for $35...making my monthy cost around $20 month (approx. 17 data, 3 on SIM). Obviously, I'll use my wifi at home for music/Netflix, pretty much as I always have.

I'm on the $60 per month plan. I would change to the $30 but I don't want to get a new number, too much of a hassle n I'm pretty sure I need more than 100 minutes a month

You can port your number over, and additional minutes are only 10 cents, just keep a tenner in your account balance in case you go over.

For the $30/mo plan, it's for new activations only - so you'd need to get a new SIM card and new account.

You can also port your number to Google Voice - thus, no matter what your number through the carrier changes to, you can ALWAYS have the same number with freedom to change whenever you want.

At $50 a month why don't you look into Tmobile's Value plans? With the Value Plan you have to have your own phone (buy on Ebay, craigs, etc) or buy your own phone (full price at Tmobile), or finance the phone for 20 monthly payments (from Tmobile). You have to get a two year contract also with a $200 ETF.
First 100MB at 4G seems like a joke. I get 2GB at 4G and then its edge speed after that. I am currently paying 49.99 for 500 mins, unlimited text, 2GB data, nights/wknds, and free wifi calling which doesnt use up your airtime mins.

Why not just stay with simple unlimited talk text and 2 gig isn't bad I went to the 30 dollar 5gig plan with T-Mobile prepay but it's only 100 mins so I'm using my Google voice and groove ip to make calls over my data not a bad gig I think, only thing different from simple is u get a little more features on tmobile like u can add like caller tunes and customer service is better on the non simple mobile side of things my experience with simple was not a bad one I'm just a poor boy trying to save money haha

simple mobile started great not till they introduced the 4g 60$ plan.. since then my 40$ plan was capped at 119K that,s worst than edge i did not even reach the limit at all. my brother activated brand new account same thing and i got tire of waiting 30 on the line to speak with someone who will blame your phone for it they fixed the speed once by resetting the date on their side but at the begging of every cycle it goes back to 119K it,s just awful to advertise unlimited 3g and not even give 3g speed... the 30$ deal is very tempting... but when u make calls using data doesn't it take bandwidth
The other thing to remember with Simple Mobile, is it rides TMO towers, BUT, you will be a "Second Class Citizen", TMO customers will always get priority data/calls over SM customers, so even when you are on EDGE, you are at the end of the line ...

Sprint Epic Touch 4G on Ting..?

My contract is getting ready to expire with sprint in the next couple of months. I wanted a new phone upgrade but refused to renew my two year contract with sprint. Instead, i fully payed for brand new Epic touch 4G at a drastic discounted price. I love my phone. I recently found out about Ting (on the sprint network). are there any development towards getting sprint phones over to Ting..? I would just hate to buy anouther galaxy S2 just to get on Ting.

I wasn't complaining about sprint network. In fact, it is the only network that gets me the best reception where i live. My only concern has been my monthly payments (family plan). When conparing what we pay and use with sprint or "any" other carrier for that matter, it is crazy high! I don't know about you but I'm looking to save. Ting makes sense for us. $20 savings for you equals to a savings of $240 per year. Me, on the other hand, saves me over a thousand. Going to Ting keeps me on Sprint's network without going broke.

You should be very specific with your math.
1. I didn't find on ting site anything about free night and weekend minutes.
Does it mean that 1000 or what ever minutes I buy will aply to any call made/recived.?
If yes than for my family plan with 4 lines we getting thru 4500-5000 min easy every month. I should plug that number in.
2. Data is 3GB max available. And I'm alone going thru 2-2.5GB a month.
4 of us together are using about 8-10GG a month.
I just plugged those number into ting savings calculator:
4lines 4000 min. 2000 sms/mms 10GB data (combined usage) and got monthly bill of $321.50. Try it yourself if you want.
My montly bill with sprint including $8 insurance on each phone ($32 that's alone) is about $226 a month.
In my case sprint still the cheapest solution.

I said "combined usage" for 4 phones/lines.
I think 2-2.5GB data per phone is not too much and you can go easy thru it.
Any weather widged take 15-20MB a day which will make about 450-600 MB a month. Check your emails, reply to post on forum, use gps/navigation and you done. Ne need to use google music, pandora, netfilx or hulu.
With those apps you will go over 5-6GB alone.
I have 2 kids in mid 20's and they are on FB/Twitter/Mail/Pandora/Google music all day long.
So 10GB data for 4 lines is not too much.
Just went on sprint site and checked my account. Bill was paid 2 days ago and it was $225.14 for following usage:
2850 minutes talk
8.35GB data used
3450 SMS/MMS sent/recieved.
So I was pretty close with my estimate of monthly usage and price for my family plan.
And if I plug this numbers into ting calculator my bill will go up by quite a bit.

He's better sticking with sprint or if hes gotta change to try to save some $ then he should try
for talking alot and data usage:
Boost mobile + theres a guide on step by step on how to flash to boost already made and the monthly bill is only $50 then you also get the shrinkage plan
if he mainly text's/mms/ and uses data mostly instead talking on the phone all the time he should go with
Virgin Mobile which i believe has been done and there should be a guide on how to do it and the plans on that are like $30xmonth (correct me if im wrong)
atleast thats my opinion ..
General, usketse
I did some digging around and found a few post of people using Sprint phones on Ting. It seems that a flash has been done with varying success.
On Ting's website under the Ting Help & Support Forum there is a thread called "Can I Bring my existing device to Ting?" (sorry im a newb and not allowed to post links just yet)...
That thread does indicate that a few users have purchased Ting's lower-end phones (as a donor) and use its' ESN number along with a program called CDMA Workshop in order to flash rooted Sprint phones to work on Ting.
Can anyone shed some light on how this procedure is done or what is involved..? Can the phone be re-flashed to be used on Sprint network again or is this a one time process?
Thanks guys..

just replaced my vzw with a gsm variant for prepaid. looking for voip tips.

So i got tired of paying 190 a month for my phones and made the plunge for the gsm nexus and tmobiles 30 a month plan. I am looking to use a voip system to hopefully not go over my new 100 min plan. I plan on trying this over 3g and am wondering what people recommend for voip solutions for there phone. I have tried groove ip but discovered I had terrible latency. Any tips? Thanks!

Data is the reason to go with the $30 T-Mobile plan, you get 5gb before slow down.

VOIP is just never going to be as consistent or useful as the regular cell network calls, especially if you're talking about calls over HSPA+. Its unfortunate but it is how it is right now. Any VOIP solution you find will be a convoluted hack to help you get by if you're close to your monthly usage limit, and really shouldn't be relied on as your main source of calls. Don't get this plan expecting to make 800 minutes of calls every month using VOIP. The $30 T-Mobile plan is a fantastic value if you truly don't make a lot of calls (or have a land line at home), but its definitely not for everyone.
Hop over to a plan with unlimited calls if you need to make a lot of calls every month. Straight Talk $45, Net10 $50, Simple Mobile $50, T-Mobile $60/$70 are all good options, and are still drastically cheaper than carrier plans.
If you're interested in VOIP though, they've dove into it for dozens of pages here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646755
I can say that the call quality on Straight Talk Sim Att is great and its not that much more than Tmo per month. Calling is unlimited. Att coverage isn't as good as VZW but its pretty darn close for me. Well worth the $45+ per month I am saving over VZW.

People keep saying Straight Talk has a 2GB cap like it's gospel. This really isn't the case. It depends on your usage over the month and the network saturation of other ST users in your area. Lots of people Regularly push 3GB per month. It's just not set in stone.
Well I need closer to 5 to make this usable. So straight talk or simple mobile? What are the recommendations? I can confirm... VOIP=Not really usable for day to day use.

Out of those two if you need 5GB I'd suggest Simple Mobile, but I doubt you'll be able to consistently go that high (Simple Mobile was bought by Straight Talk a couple months ago). If you need to have 5GB of guaranteed data you need to either use the $30 T-Mobile plan and pay for minute overages, or go with the $70 T-Mobile plan. No one else will guarantee that much data.

As is the case for most people.
Why do you need 5 gigabytes to make it usable? Are you streaming a lot, do you not have access to WiFi, are you downloading large files? I was using 3 to 5 when I was on Verizon but found myself using way less when I started managing my data use.

If you can get by until next month you might try Solavei they are launching Sept 21 and have unlimited data, talk and text. You get 4 Gb of 4G data then unlimited at 2G/edge. Many other features and benefits as well. I'm using Solavei now and it is the best thing I have tried so far. I hope to do a full review next week sometime. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.
I do a lot of surfing, a lot of streaming of Pandora, I have a stupid long commute so I also download a lot of apps and ROMs via my connection. So between simple mobile and straight talk, everyone prefers simple mobile it looks like. I just don't want to be kicked off

I drive an hour to work everyday so I can understand wanting to stream music. I just rip radio streams off the internet to my computer over WiFi then transfer to my phone as local music. Haven't tried with Pandora.
You are going to have to pick up a WiFi connection somewhere with straight talk or simple if downloading large rom files and streaming a lot. You could always just leave proxy blank in APN setting and hope they don't notice.
I would give the $30 tmo a try with VoIP. Its only $30. Maybe the call quality will be good enough for you who knows. You can use Google voice or talk for free messaging if you need too.

Most of my calls are unimportant (I.E., family/friends). So I was able to make PBxes.org + SipDroid work very well for outgoing calls reliably over 3g/4g and Wifi (if I wasn't moving past cell towers). For 'real' calls to the bank and such, I just used up the 100 minutes allocated to me.
Recently, I switched to paying ~$2-5/month extra through VOIP.MS for way better VOIP calling. I can even call on 2G (edge) reliably. Though I am still working on it a bit more to really configure it well and I might be using extra battery atm since it uses UDP instead of TCP connections... So again a work in progress.
This thread, as mentioned earlier is helpful:
[INFO][GSM] Own Your Cell Service ..with Prepaid and the Galaxy Nexus [UPDATED 5/24]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455014
However, this thread is the bread and butter for configuring VOIP imo. There was heavy discussion near the last 5-20 pages, but I would start with the first post and 6th post(the FAQ post).
[GUIDE] Smartphone Service for just $30/month
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646755
VOIP works fine imo and worst case, they go to my GVoice voicemail and I call them right back, at least with my newer setup using VOIP.MS.
I've used the $30/mo plan since March and just recently picked up 4 months of prepay for $28.50/month (notice no tax and 5% more savings). The savings of a $45/mo plan for unlimited talk is ~$180/year (assuming a little more then 28.50/mo due to my VOIP.MS being another $2-5/month). I am willing to sacrifice a little on missed calls for that kind of extra savings.
Enjoy!
@stelv, please excuse my ignorance. What is the function of the APN on a gsm phone? I come from being on vzw forever.
Also, simple mobile use T-Mobile? I'm leaning towards straight talk att. Discovering T-Mobile really sucks in north Idaho :-/ hopefully I won't use over 3GB....

Straight Talk

So I have my Unlocked T999. I was all set to pop a sim for Staright Talk into it to get the $45 unlimited everything Vs. my $80 a month I pay now to TMO. Many people have said I will get throttled if I use a lot of data. I use about 8 gigs a month. Has anyone been throttled, and or not?
Thanks

You don't get throttled on straight talk you get your service shut off. Read their terms of service it says not to exceed 2gb in one month and like 100 mb a day (I think) but 8gb is too much for straight talk. I too was wanting to switch but googled a lot. Type straight talk data cap into Google and read everything

I think you need to read Straight Talk's terms of service. Nowhere does it mention "2GB" or "100MB". It doesn't mention any limit at all except no streaming.
People using Straight Talk have determined that it is safe to use 100MBs a day, no more than 2GBs a month. There are exceptions to this rule, some people get away with 3-12GBs.
I would go with AT&T GoPhone. They offer unlimited everything for $50 a month. You can find the $50 refill cards for $47.50 on eBay.
I've been using GoPhone for 14 days now. I used about 350MBs my second day. I didn't get throttled or kicked. With 16 days left, I've used 1.35GBs. Still no throttling.
The catch is that you must use a T-Mobile phone. If you use an AT&T phone, they'll block the data.

WHich plan do you have? mines about 67 a month. I have the value plan 500 mintues, unlimited text, and unlimited data. And being a college student on an extremely tight budget it took a lot to convince me to leave my 100 min, unlimitied text, and 5G of data for 30 bucks a month PREPAID But after upgrading to the current plan, im glad i did. Especially since my phone is the only internet source i have. Doing school reports, online banking, online anything, has gotten much simpler now that im not throttled or concerned about using my data lol.

They aren't throttling you. Straight Talk has been having network issues in a few areas. Straight Talk doesn't have the ability to throttle even if they wanted to.

hello there. you are correct. no where int he TandS does it say anything about a limit at all.. infact becauase of what people were saying about the limits i called straight talk AND emailed them and both times they told me that there are no limits. but that you CANNOT tether. so i just got new service with them.. if they cut me.. then ill cut them.
hope all goes well though.

Of course it doesnt say a data cap in their TOS if it did they couldnt advertise "unlimited data". Just google it. They block you after so many bytes.
But how did you get that data to work on the ATT go plan? did you buy the go phone then swap SIM cards? I figured if the IMEI didnt match the SIM then they would block it. Mind pming me and explaining? As i dont know if XDA would like if you posted in the general forums. Just being safe. lol

It's 3G/4G. Expect 3MB down, 1MB up. Max I've seen is B down, 2MB up. It's more than fast enough to watch HD YouTube. More reliable than T-Mobile, in my opinion.
I'm loving the coverage. AT&T has way better coverage vs. T-Mobile.

I activated the sim using my One S's IMEI. I purchased a regular orange/white AT&T sim from eBay for $10. AT&T GoPhone will block data if you use an AT&T branded phone, or some international phones. The only phones that have consistently worked for me are rmobule phones. I purchased a T-Mobile S III last week.
Basically, activate your GoPhone sim with your T-Mobile phone IMEI, and use it in a T-Mobile phone.
I've swapped my sim into AT&T phones and then back into my T-Mobile One S, and data still works.

Straighttalk doesnt have network issues because they dont have a network to begin with. They are an att mvno atleast with the att sim. They WILL throttle you if you abuse the per day limit of MBs and tether. I can validate this as ive been warned twice already for going over the limits (which are no where to be found even though they say its in the ToS) and tethering. I am currrently being throttled to 0.15mbps for more than a week. Everytime i call and ***** about being throttled they warn and unthrottle me but start to do it again a few days later. If you dont think im being throttled please explain how my connections download speed is always 0.15mbps and why the customer service rep told me i was being throttled for being in violation with att's terms and conditions?! you can see my previous speeds vary from 2-8mbps and when im throttled it is garbage.

Help find Best ATT plan for me?

Hey all. I've been using Straight Talk with an ATT SIM but I'm tired of getting throttled for no reason. I want to switch to a plan with ATT. I would use roughly 2-4 GB a month and prefer unlimited talk and text. Any ideas on a good plan or deal?

although you wont be throttled in speeds, you'll be throttled in the wallet as a major carrier is usually going to cost double or more.
currently, an AT&T individual plan with 450 minutes, 3gb of data and unlimited texting is $90 before tax
a mobile share plan with unlimited minutes, unlimited texting and 4gb of data is $110 before tax
i have at&t. just want you to understand the cost difference

Re: Best ATT plan?
I appreciate the quick response. Yeah, I know the price is gonna suck but honestly I have a tough time trusting ST anymore. They literally told me my plan was throttled because I use FB and Twitter. When I was on Sprint I used maybe 5gb a month. Came to ST and started off using around 2 but for throttled. They have me down to 1GB a month and I STILL get throttled. I don't stream anything and only use a few mb a day. They have a new "department" now for high data use subscribers. Its a voice recording telling you how to minimize your data use. That's it. My plan renewed and it went right back to 200k down. I'm ready to pay more so I can actually use my data for more then just a quick web browse. The price is great but they're so unclear about their policies and its impossible to find someone there who actually knows what they are talking about. Pay for what you get I guess.

And don't forget, it's $10 for every Gb you go over your data plan

As mentioned before there are several options with AT&T, but they come with a price tag. If you want unlimited talk and text and a limited data then mobile share is the way to go. If you have family, or family members who you trust will pay their share of the bill, you can add lines and spread out the costs SOME. There is no right or wrong choice...it is dependent upon you and what you want and/or need. Keep in mind that you can tie into AT&T wireless areas as part of the plans so you can help limit some data usage.
