Help find Best ATT plan for me? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey all. I've been using Straight Talk with an ATT SIM but I'm tired of getting throttled for no reason. I want to switch to a plan with ATT. I would use roughly 2-4 GB a month and prefer unlimited talk and text. Any ideas on a good plan or deal?

although you wont be throttled in speeds, you'll be throttled in the wallet as a major carrier is usually going to cost double or more.
currently, an AT&T individual plan with 450 minutes, 3gb of data and unlimited texting is $90 before tax
a mobile share plan with unlimited minutes, unlimited texting and 4gb of data is $110 before tax
i have at&t. just want you to understand the cost difference

Re: Best ATT plan?
I appreciate the quick response. Yeah, I know the price is gonna suck but honestly I have a tough time trusting ST anymore. They literally told me my plan was throttled because I use FB and Twitter. When I was on Sprint I used maybe 5gb a month. Came to ST and started off using around 2 but for throttled. They have me down to 1GB a month and I STILL get throttled. I don't stream anything and only use a few mb a day. They have a new "department" now for high data use subscribers. Its a voice recording telling you how to minimize your data use. That's it. My plan renewed and it went right back to 200k down. I'm ready to pay more so I can actually use my data for more then just a quick web browse. The price is great but they're so unclear about their policies and its impossible to find someone there who actually knows what they are talking about. Pay for what you get I guess.

And don't forget, it's $10 for every Gb you go over your data plan

As mentioned before there are several options with AT&T, but they come with a price tag. If you want unlimited talk and text and a limited data then mobile share is the way to go. If you have family, or family members who you trust will pay their share of the bill, you can add lines and spread out the costs SOME. There is no right or wrong choice...it is dependent upon you and what you want and/or need. Keep in mind that you can tie into AT&T wireless areas as part of the plans so you can help limit some data usage.

GSM Galaxy Nexus on AT & T medianet

Anyone able to use the $10 unlimited medianet plan or are you forced into the smart phone 2 gb plan?
My nexus arrives tomorrow and I'm on the medianet plan on my gs2 and was hoping to keep it
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Yep, you'll be able to keep your $10 unlimited with your Galaxy Nexus on AT&T. That's what I'm doing and have been doing since my Galaxy S2 International version. Still get HSPA speeds too, roughly ~4 mbs download and ~1 mbs uploads. Enjoy it!
You may or may not get to keep the $10 medianet unlimited. If you did, then consider yourself lucky.
Back when I had my Nexus One they switched me to the $30 smartphone unlimited a few days after changing from a dumbphone.
So far I've been able to keep my media net plan. We'll see what happens over the next few days

Thanks for the info guys. I've been considering making the move but would only do so if I can keep my $10 MediaNet unlimited plan.
If you guys wouldn't mind to keep us updated in the next few weeks it would be really helpful.
Happy Holidays!
Any luck keeping the $10 unlimited media net? I am hearing conflicted reports, and seems like a lot of misinformation out there. Some folks saying their friend's friend got switched, others saying its still good.
If they do catch you and switch to a smartphone data plan, is there a way to get AT&T to let you retain unlimited but at the $30 rate instead, or do they force you to the $25 2GB plan?
Fingers crossed, but I'm on day 4 of using the medianet plan. I'm using the Cingular 410 apn, and getting roughly 7mbps download speeds when in good coverage areas.
Any updates? I don't want to drop my unlimited smartphone plan for this only to find out they'll switch me to the 2GB plan

If you were grandfathered in to the unlimited smartphone plan you will be able to keep it, the reason why they won't is because they will lose money

nono, once you get rid of the grandfathered plan (for example, switching to medianet), you can't get it back - unless you do the iPhone 2G trick
I'm still on the $10 plan. They haven't sent a text message/email yet. My billing cycle ends on the 22nd, so we'll see if there are any changes then.
As far a I understand it, since I am technically using a data plan that is not compatible with my phone, they CAN and WILL switch me to a 2Gb plan for my smartphone, and take away my unlimited. They can do this because they don't technically offer the unlimited data for smartphones plan anymore (only for grandfathered accounts), so they can't bump me to that one. Since I would be switching from non-smartphone to smartphone, I wouldn't be considered grandfathered.
I'm sure I could call and complain and get them to do it anyway, but I understand their reasoning. It just sucks.

My billing cycle ended on the 22nd, and I am still on the $10 media net plan. Still using the Cingular APN.
Good luck.
Hopefully you can continue using $10 data plan.
I wouldn't risk it of you use a lot of data and are currently on the $30 unlimited data.
I heard some Samsung galaxy note people losing their unlimited $30 cause AT&T system thought they were using a tablet device instea of a phone.
So far no issues on the media net plan. I haven't went over 2 gb though yet

I have been using that plan since i had a HTC tytan 2 - nexus 1 and now the Galaxy nexus... no problems... high speeds...
I had the $10 medianet plan and got switched to the $30 unlimited plan too about a month (one billing period) after putting the sim into my Nexus One.
Either way I think you'll be able to keep the unlimited once your grandfathered in no matter what. Price might go up though :/
Good luck!

I tried out both the wap.cingular APN and the PTA APN and it seems like the PTA APN consistently had lower ping and higher speed than wap.cingular.

Unlimited Plan

Is there any way I would be able to keep my unlimited plan and get the Inc 4G?

If you are willing to pay the full price of the phone and not resign a contract.. it pretty much is less money than having the 2-4 gig plan. As long as you are ok spending the 650 all at once.
Unlimited data is unlimited data, whether it be 3 or 4g. As long as you dont change your plan, you will always have unlimited data even if 5g ever comes out.

Two or more devices (phones, tablets, etc) actually. Cmlusco, Verizon announced Family Share Data plans that will go into effect on June 28th. If you (or anyone you know, SPREAD THE WORD) want to maintain your unlimited data plan you must upgrade by then OR pay full retail on future phones to keep your plan unchanged. The plan breakdown is ridiculous. Give me a bit and I can post a link detailing the new changes.
Edit: http://www.droid-life.com/2012/06/12/the-basics-verizons-new-share-everything-plans/
and
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/06/12/verizon-announces-shared-everything-plans-starting-at-50-for-1gb-of-data-and-unlimited-talktext/
I did some math and anyone switching from a unlimited plan will have the bill increase $30-$60 over before. $720-$1440 over 24 months still feel like a subsidized phone is a good deal?
I would say the best thing about the "shared" data plan is Unlimited talk.
Honestly
shared data should look more like this
unlimited talk+text 1 gig allocation per line with the same 40$ per smartphone line starting at 15 so the share plan starts at $55 and 2 phones would be $95 and the pool would be 2 gig in size. And it scales well.
I fail to see the point of such low caps with tethering and 4g we use it faster and on more devices.
Because of this whole ordeal I am seriously thinking about buying a nexus from google and going to T-Mobile. I can get unlimited there without feeling like i'm taking it up the tailpipe :/

Straight Talk

So I have my Unlocked T999. I was all set to pop a sim for Staright Talk into it to get the $45 unlimited everything Vs. my $80 a month I pay now to TMO. Many people have said I will get throttled if I use a lot of data. I use about 8 gigs a month. Has anyone been throttled, and or not?
Thanks

You don't get throttled on straight talk you get your service shut off. Read their terms of service it says not to exceed 2gb in one month and like 100 mb a day (I think) but 8gb is too much for straight talk. I too was wanting to switch but googled a lot. Type straight talk data cap into Google and read everything

I think you need to read Straight Talk's terms of service. Nowhere does it mention "2GB" or "100MB". It doesn't mention any limit at all except no streaming.
People using Straight Talk have determined that it is safe to use 100MBs a day, no more than 2GBs a month. There are exceptions to this rule, some people get away with 3-12GBs.
I would go with AT&T GoPhone. They offer unlimited everything for $50 a month. You can find the $50 refill cards for $47.50 on eBay.
I've been using GoPhone for 14 days now. I used about 350MBs my second day. I didn't get throttled or kicked. With 16 days left, I've used 1.35GBs. Still no throttling.
The catch is that you must use a T-Mobile phone. If you use an AT&T phone, they'll block the data.

WHich plan do you have? mines about 67 a month. I have the value plan 500 mintues, unlimited text, and unlimited data. And being a college student on an extremely tight budget it took a lot to convince me to leave my 100 min, unlimitied text, and 5G of data for 30 bucks a month PREPAID But after upgrading to the current plan, im glad i did. Especially since my phone is the only internet source i have. Doing school reports, online banking, online anything, has gotten much simpler now that im not throttled or concerned about using my data lol.

hope all goes well though.

Of course it doesnt say a data cap in their TOS if it did they couldnt advertise "unlimited data". Just google it. They block you after so many bytes.
But how did you get that data to work on the ATT go plan? did you buy the go phone then swap SIM cards? I figured if the IMEI didnt match the SIM then they would block it. Mind pming me and explaining? As i dont know if XDA would like if you posted in the general forums. Just being safe. lol

It's 3G/4G. Expect 3MB down, 1MB up. Max I've seen is B down, 2MB up. It's more than fast enough to watch HD YouTube. More reliable than T-Mobile, in my opinion.
I'm loving the coverage. AT&T has way better coverage vs. T-Mobile.

I activated the sim using my One S's IMEI. I purchased a regular orange/white AT&T sim from eBay for $10. AT&T GoPhone will block data if you use an AT&T branded phone, or some international phones. The only phones that have consistently worked for me are rmobule phones. I purchased a T-Mobile S III last week.
Basically, activate your GoPhone sim with your T-Mobile phone IMEI, and use it in a T-Mobile phone.
I've swapped my sim into AT&T phones and then back into my T-Mobile One S, and data still works.

Straighttalk doesnt have network issues because they dont have a network to begin with. They are an att mvno atleast with the att sim. They WILL throttle you if you abuse the per day limit of MBs and tether. I can validate this as ive been warned twice already for going over the limits (which are no where to be found even though they say its in the ToS) and tethering. I am currrently being throttled to 0.15mbps for more than a week. Everytime i call and ***** about being throttled they warn and unthrottle me but start to do it again a few days later. If you dont think im being throttled please explain how my connections download speed is always 0.15mbps and why the customer service rep told me i was being throttled for being in violation with att's terms and conditions?! you can see my previous speeds vary from 2-8mbps and when im throttled it is garbage.

TMobile US $70 unlimited HSPA+ prepaid plan

It seems like TMobile US removed 5G cap for their $70 prepaid plan. It might be worthy for GNex to tether. But their web page
are very inconsistent. Anyone successfully switch the data plan to $70 prepaid unlimited?
http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/monthly-4g-plans
I wish Tmo had reception here where I live, I would jump on that plan quick.
I was on the 5G for $70 and it automatically switched to unlimited (or at least that's what my account says). Never got above 4G, so I don't know if it gets throttled after 5G...
Good deal I been hoping they would offer a no contract legit unlimited data option. I might still go with the 30$ 100 min option though, just because I've gotten used to regulating my data for 5gb and don't use hardly any mins anyway. Oh well I got 2 more months to decide, maybe they'll have more choices by then.

I'm definitely switching to this. Sick of trying to deal with VoIP on the $30 plan, and, while I'll rarely take advantage of it, having truly unlimited data can't be argued with for peace of mind on vacations or whatever.

Since it is a newer plan, I would imagine that they are still working at getting current subscribers ported over to the new plan. I would also guess that if you do go over your "limit" that you could be thrown onto the applicable plan by calling to customer support.
Looks like a great deal, one I would definitely hop on if I didn't have such great service through Verizon.
I bet some of the mnvos will follow suit, or at least modify their definitions of "unlimited" data.

Good to know. I will try to download things like Linux image to test the throttle.

Unlimited data plan offer

Has anyone else recently had an offer for unlimited data from verizon? I just got that offer today and it's about 30 dollars cheaper than what I'm currently paying. Is this one of those to good to be true deals? From what I've been able to find out, it looks like it's 10gb of tethered 4g data and then switches to 3g and 22gb of data and then switches to 3g. Am I missing something? Does anyone know anything more about it? Is what I read online correct? I can't seem to find anything official from verizon regarding the fine print.

I work for VZW. It's legit, it's real unlimited with 10gb of tethering at 4g speeds and then deprioritization after 22gb of mobile use. Meaning that if you hit 22gb and are connected to a congested tower, you might be slowed down a bit as other users who don't use as much data will be pushed to the front of the line, so to speak. If you're on a tower that isn't congested, you won't experience any slowdowns. Hope that helps.
Are you in a grandfathered unlimited plan? If so, what you have is true unlimited where this plan offering is throttled after 22gb.

I still have the true unlimited plan, it's an altell plan from 15 years or more ago. But my kids and wife don't. I wonder if this would be good for me. But I make them piggy back off my WiFi tether when we go anywhere. And always stay on WiFi. I wish it was 22g per line, instead of the account.

I had the same thing. I switched to the new plan and noticed no difference. I think you will be all right.

Grandfathered true unlimited is true unlimited per fcc rules. As for having them tether I'm not sure Verizon's stance.
That said, the new plan you will be throttled and can be because it is written as such.
Just keep that in mind.
I just compared my current plan to the Unlimited Plan. I could change and it would be the same price, BUT, not really, because I would lose the Employer discount my wife gets.

On average I myself use 20 gigs to 40 gigs per month. I'm not sure if this would work that well.
