I just have a basic question. I'm considering the HTC M8 as my next phone, (waiting on Nexus 6 unveil first ) but was curious about how the Google Play edition and "normal" will work. Is it possibly to just transform the standard Sense phone to a stock android with OTA, and vice versa? And if not, are you simply able to flash each new build pushed to the Google Play editions on the standard Sense edition since it's the same hardware?
Thanks for the help!
Obviously I can't say how it's all going to happen here, but with my S4, I was rocking out a nearly stock GPE rom. It did have some visual and performance tweaks, so I never got to try the OTA updates, but as best as anyone could tell, the two devices were identical. With the GPE M8 apparently shipping out, I'd expect similar roms to hit the forums in short order.

Oooh glad to hear, thanks! I'll probably end up back here if we don't get a sexy metal bodied Nexus, and I really doubt we will
Can someone help me please?
I have bought a HTC m8 sense 6 version in the UK and want to make it GPE. How do I approach this?

HTC Confirms 2.3 Desire Plans
Bit of a news flash here, sorry if it's in the wrong section but this is more of an anser to an un-asked question, y'get me?
Anyway, HTC confirmed yesterday that they WILL be updating the current Desire range upto 2.3. This includes the Desire, the Z and the HD. Hope this helps with the concerns that HTC were ditching the Desire for the Desire S.
For the rest of the information, check out this page.
The link goes to CNET
*It's likely that rather than being 2.3, the Desire will be getting 2.4, which is the latest release from Google. This is no different from 2.3 but contains some very minor bugfixes.
Nice! A bit long to wait though.
Thanks for the info!

no problem, I was randomly searching the Internet for any articles that could shed any light on the current Desire situation we are all going through, and I just happened to find that neat post that was only put on there today. Alas the Desire lives on, I guess with it being so popular HTC decided to make it, however I'm not expert but from a Market view of things, I seriously doubt Honeycomb will be coming to the Desire range, as none boast dual processors and with the update coming so late, it would be a large Market downside for HTC, why develop Honeycomb for a device that's waited 6 months for a 2.4 update... Anyway I'm just glad that within my first few days of being at XDA that I have been able to help people with the Desire information, I know I only sourced it, but this stops a lot of peoples worries, and it looks promising that we WILL be getting the new sense time for a beer I think xD
We re starting to feel just like the Xperia X10 users and their updates it all goes according to HTC's plan. Nevertheless its good to know we'll be getting the new sense and and Android.

I think that the reaosn why it's taking so long really lies with Google. If they hadn't of had the 2.3 exclusivity with the Nexus S, then the chances are we would have our update much quicker. However HTC should be concentrating on Software just as much as new Products. Existing customers are just as important as potentially new Customers, and at the moment it looks like they are focusing their business on creating new products, and not updating the current ones. Not a good business plan at all.
with the way that our providers play about with it , as stated in the article it will be xmas before its out
I won't look forward to the update because waiting for updates ALWAYS dissappointed me in the past...

That's one of the benefits of De-branding. My HTC Desire came branded with the Orange software (which left me with 100MB of free space) I de-braded, updated to Froyo 2.2 and had something like 143MB of free space left, and whenever HTC release an update I immidiatley recieve it. My HTC has Orange logo's on it and everything, but it's de-branded.

It's not the 2.4 update we can't wait for, its the new Sense, well in my case it is anyway. 2.3/4 isn't a very good update? It's a few icons and support for some other Hardware, Honeycomb should be interesting.

We will all know the truth when the times come if HTC decides to release a pure AOSP 4.4 for us but we just have to manually do it ourselves. Doubt I would go for it since I didn't had a good time with the AOSP rom floating around in the forums
It's for the one x+, showed up on my BlinkFeed today.

This ROM looks absolutely fantastic. Any developers have insight as to how we can get this working on our Verizon HTC One's?

I've done some reading and tried this Sense-to-Sense porting guide with no luck.
Thoughts? Ideas? Halp?
I'm no expert but we'll likely see more ports once 4.3 comes out for us.

Well like cm I'm sure you can port it over. Just ask some devs on this forum to get you started. @Flyhalf205 or somebody like him can help I'm sure

My rom uses the exact same base. Not saying it's exactly the same however.
But what exactly is it about the rom that interests you?
Is there something it claims to offer that the roms we already have don't?
Just trying to understand all this desire to port other roms that have the same base as existing roms already ported and available.
What features makes it different or more desirable?
Maybe some insight may help others to understand and therefor justify why any Dev would port something from another Dev, when he has done the work already for his own port/rom.
Trying to understand what the draw is, that's all.
Is it the more well known "name" on it?
Go ask the creator of the ROM for permission to port and I will see about porting it over if I get the time.

If you look at OP Post #1 here is the sharing policy, I've already messaged mike already to inform him... If you could pull this off FlyHalf that would be AWESOME. I have friends using this ROM and they totally swear by it (full GPU UI rendering, all the underhood tweaks make this rom quick, CPU governor performance).
This forum is about sharing. If you want to use any part of my work, please feel free to do it but remember about some simple rules:
Inform me about using my work by sending me a message. You don’t need my permission, just inform me.
Include link to my thread from where you took particular files.
Give proper credits for what you used.
When it comes to using my ROM as a base you are free to do it only if I don't have "Stock ROMs" thread available for particular device. If such thread exists, you are
obligated to take ROMs from there instead. These threads with "Stock ROMs" are usually updated within 24 hours from the moment when I release my custom ROM.
Sharing is one thing, but please respect some areas of my work like:
ROM name - "Android Revolution HD", "Android Revolution", "Revo HD", "AR HD" etc.
Graphics used in my threads, especially head-banners designed exclusivity for me.
Other parts of my work that are not supposed to be used by others without proper permission.
Reguardless if he lets me. I will still port it to myself. May even work with him to get Verizon support in his main thread. Would be best solution since he does have sprint support. I am making no promises I can get this done! But I will try

I actually did this, just to see what all the hoopla was about.
It's essentially a stock rom with Sense 5 toolbox, not much point in it really. (my 2 cents)
What feature is it you are looking for that's not currently available to us on Vzw? Just curious.
Is it the GPU rendering? Because that's the only thing that really stands out... to me anyway.

Okay, good to know we'r not missing out on too much. Unfortunately, its not like we can test out that ROM for ourselves since its on the GSM version so its hard to really compare it to the roms that are offered for Verizon.

Why should anyone pay for the software. It should be free & optional donations. There should be another software than sunshine that other devs have released.
If it's free to flash an lg/samsung/sony than why would anyone pay for a software for HTC. Plus if your HTC bricks or you upgrade to another HTC you've gotta folk out another $25 (could be more depending on your country) each new HTC device you purchase. It's stupid and there should be a free software, just like there are for other brands of phones I've specified.

Would love to see a free way to bypass/disable secure boot on a modern lg/samsung/sony, I haven't. I've seen some very private, and VERY expensive tools to do so.
because donations wouldn't cover 1/10th of the cost of development.
What is stupid is the amount of complaints we see with people saying it is stupid. If you don't like it, do what we did. Develop your own. Invest your time, energy and money into it. Then give it away, but don't complain when donations don't even cover your phone costs, let along your other equipment, the specialized software, or your time.

Do you work for free or for optional donations only?
Do you tell every developer their software should be free or only some? What is the standard? What is your basis for deciding who should get paid and who shouldn't?
Do you know S-OFF isn't required for flashing custom ROMs on this device? I'm S-ON and for a good reason: it's more secure (against malicious code and user error) and it has kept me from flashing a problematic, unreleased, misreported htc ROM (the leaked Oreo for US Unlocked; official release has still not happened yet).

No. The alternative is more expensive, as it requires purchasing hardware (and the expertise to use it).
Secondly, IF there's an official Oreo for your variant, no, you don't need to be S-OFF; that would be silly since the point of S-ON is to prevent unofficial non-htc-signed firmware from being flashed to the device's critical partitions. There is not an official Oreo build for US Unlocked (617), for example, contrary to what's been misreported.
Well that's your opinion mate, I'm not implying the software is stupid. I'm saying if it's not free then it should be a one time cost, regardless of how many HTC devices you own . I own the LG v20 as well as the HTC 10. It was extremely easy to flash another rom on my v20. No cost or anything, just download LG Up, have the kdz file for the firmware and away you go but it's a hassle on the 10, seeming there's no other workaround to downgrade your firmware.

You can flash htc devices without s-off, even easier than LG. So I dont even know what you are talking about, I dont think you do either.
If you dont like it, do it youself? We released a ton of free resources to get you up to speed, save you a lot of time and money, that we had to invest.

I have guides for download htc without s-off here on XDA, just like with LG, it depends how they set some versioning info.

No, you don't. You can just wait for htc to release the stuff before flashing it and unlocking the bootloader strictly involves following htc's directions. Have you followed the instructions for whichever ROM you're wanting to flash?
