No and no.
The current Oreo RUU is probably a leak, thus not official.

This explains the poor battery performance...
Why should anyone pay for the software. It should be free & optional donations. There should be another software than sunshine that other devs have released.
If it's free to flash an lg/samsung/sony than why would anyone pay for a software for HTC. Plus if your HTC bricks or you upgrade to another HTC you've gotta folk out another $25 (could be more depending on your country) each new HTC device you purchase. It's stupid and there should be a free software, just like there are for other brands of phones I've specified.

Would love to see a free way to bypass/disable secure boot on a modern lg/samsung/sony, I haven't. I've seen some very private, and VERY expensive tools to do so.
because donations wouldn't cover 1/10th of the cost of development.
What is stupid is the amount of complaints we see with people saying it is stupid. If you don't like it, do what we did. Develop your own. Invest your time, energy and money into it. Then give it away, but don't complain when donations don't even cover your phone costs, let along your other equipment, the specialized software, or your time.

Do you work for free or for optional donations only?
Do you tell every developer their software should be free or only some? What is the standard? What is your basis for deciding who should get paid and who shouldn't?
Do you know S-OFF isn't required for flashing custom ROMs on this device? I'm S-ON and for a good reason: it's more secure (against malicious code and user error) and it has kept me from flashing a problematic, unreleased, misreported htc ROM (the leaked Oreo for US Unlocked; official release has still not happened yet).

No. The alternative is more expensive, as it requires purchasing hardware (and the expertise to use it).
Secondly, IF there's an official Oreo for your variant, no, you don't need to be S-OFF; that would be silly since the point of S-ON is to prevent unofficial non-htc-signed firmware from being flashed to the device's critical partitions. There is not an official Oreo build for US Unlocked (617), for example, contrary to what's been misreported.
Well that's your opinion mate, I'm not implying the software is stupid. I'm saying if it's not free then it should be a one time cost, regardless of how many HTC devices you own . I own the LG v20 as well as the HTC 10. It was extremely easy to flash another rom on my v20. No cost or anything, just download LG Up, have the kdz file for the firmware and away you go but it's a hassle on the 10, seeming there's no other workaround to downgrade your firmware.

It is facts, not opinion.
You can flash htc devices without s-off, even easier than LG. So I dont even know what you are talking about, I dont think you do either.
If you dont like it, do it youself? We released a ton of free resources to get you up to speed, save you a lot of time and money, that we had to invest.
Look I'm learning here. I haven't had the 10 for long but don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. I found it straight forward to flash the LG and I wasn't aware that I could upgrade, downgrade with s-on

How would you like me to word it? You are making factually incorrect statements?
I have guides for download htc without s-off here on XDA, just like with LG, it depends how they set some versioning info.
So basically I can upgrade/downgrade without s off but I can't flash a custom rom right?

Oh so I can flash roms and such, as long as I have an unlocked bootlooder but to have the complete advanced experience such as flashing stock roms from another country other than mine you need s off. I'd like to apologise for my rant earlier, I was being hot headed

No, you don't. You can just wait for htc to release the stuff before flashing it and unlocking the bootloader strictly involves following htc's directions. Have you followed the instructions for whichever ROM you're wanting to flash?

I have a scratched up Wildfire S that I am willing to donate for someone to figure out how to get s-off without a clip. PM if your intereseted. I'll even ship.
You MUST show proof that you are compitent to try this and not just wanting the phone. US shipping only. Anyone else out there that wants it if a dev isn't interested I'll trade it for a Best Buy gift card valued at $50 and its yours.
I am not trying to sell this (thats what the Marketplace is for...) but I don't want someone triksy just trying to grab a free phone. If you know someone who is working on this, PM and I'll see if they want it.
PM though, would really like to donate this to the "Cause."
L8r,
You are best off contacting Alpharevx team and asking them if they would be willing to work on it. They are the only team dedicated to unlocking the new phones with S-on security.
but unlock it via xtc clip in a shop is not a very big problem...
i´ve unlocked the WFS of my wife with 10€... in a mobile shop..
maybe i´m mistaken but alpharevx reussed to do it...
Alpharev couldn't unlock it. So they stopped trying.

If you unlock it yourself with XTC clip and then maybe donate it to an established developer on this forum so they can join in the development of CM7, MIUI etc.
He want's to donate it locked so that someone could work on cracking the S-on issue. If this issue is sorted then the floodgates are open to everybody, not just one guy that can work on ROMS for a small amount of people.

Maybe HTC put a special lock on the wildfire s that hackers couldn't unlock it. Or wildfire s is a special cases phone that even devs couldn't see it like it never existed.
EDIT: there fumble is that they don't have this phone that's why they do not care about it. Also ROM Manager wildfire s in not in the list.

This made me feel a lil better about our device http:// forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18343570&postcount=12
I think the people at HTC know how great this phone is and could be, and don't want it to over shadow their new devices coming out. I don't see the upgrade coming any time this year being so close to the major shopping holidays.
1 more thing, wouldn't it be special if the upgrade came with root access, I mean why just unlock boot loader. They say the reason their not locking boot loaders anymore is for development purposes.
that's their standard answer. already seen it elsewhere. don't expect too much.
Just pmed the op I think I'm might have found something just hope the op still has the phone and accepts to post it to northern Ireland if anyone else is willing to donate a wfs please sent me a pm I will return your handset once I'm finished.

Your phone costs $700 stock. Is $25 really too much to ask for to s-off and give you full access and to mod to your hearts content?

I never said anything about it being pocket money here, and i am certainly not here to discuss a third world country. Everybody has his reasons why they do or simply can't afford it.
This whole type of discussion has been done several times now and it doesn't change the situation one bit unfortunately.
So i would say stop thinking and writing about it here as it's not helping you at all (not saying you can't give your opinion but this always ends the same way)

There is no secret between HTC and sunshine. The developers of sunshine have no relation to HTC !
They develop sunshine because they have the knowledge. Now they support only their payed way to regain some income of lost (read bricked) devices in their process and the time they spent on perfecting these methods.
I can't blame them. Each device they brick is between 400-700 dollars.
Why nobody else is working on s-off ? No idea :
- No knowledge
- No time
- Not wanting to brick devices
- No need because there is sunshine
Building a tool like sunshine isn't easy.........it's not a soft brick when things go wrong. Developing a rom/software is completely different.

Its very rare for devs to work on a puzzle like s-off, when its already been solved. Quite simply, there is no reason to put forth what is a huge amount of effort, time and expense (for bricked phone, as Mr. Hofs already explained) for something that has already been done. It much more value added for devs to dedicate their talent and efforts to working on things that aren't already solved.
If you don't agree, roll up your sleeves and find your own s-off exploit. You'll find it cost a heck of lot more (in time, effort and cash) than the meager $25 the Sunshine team is asking for.
Also be aware that sunshine is developed by the same team that did firewater. They contributed to XDA and the mod community for free (or voluntary donations, anyway) for years before deciding to charge a mandatory fee for sunshine. Pretty clear that they were not motivated by greed, but merely by necessity to recoup lost funds.
But in reality, for most folks that think they "need" s-off, you probably don't. Its only needed to change CID/MID, manually flash radios, or modified hboots, and a few other things.
For the huge majority of other mods (root, custom ROM, etc.) you don't need s-off. Its nice to have, but its not really a necessity for many folks. If you need it, pay for it. If you don't way to pay, live without.

Yes that's what I mean
Like me I have m8 unlocked European v it's good to get s-off but it's not necessary for me if I want to flash Rom or use RUU just I need to relock bootloader even if I want to get OTA it's easy just unroot and back *stock recovery* @redpoint73 I agree with you
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
Theses are really good points that are being made, I've been flashing roms for a while now and have never needed S-Off but it would be nice a donation instead of waiting for AT&T to get their act together
I got my M8 on release day and s-off'd with Firewater as soon as it was released and played around for a few months. I then jumped to a Nexus 5 on Tmo for a while only to jump back to another M8 which I then had to use Sunshine. IMO, $25 is not much to get your device to where you want it to be and show support. I now have 4 devices per se because I can change and have changed my phone to the Dev Edition, TMO version, Int version and now rockin GPE. Just my $0.02
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
I know people have a mentality that everything in the custom ROM community should be free or donation-based, but...
If you are spending $500+, whether it's up-front or $25 a month for two years to your provider, $25 is a 5% premium (or one month's payment) to get it the way you want it.
If you haven't got $25... and I don't mean this in any kind of mean way... then maybe you shouldn't be risking bricking the $500 toy?
The Sunshine team are polite, helpful, IMMEDIATELY responsive in their IRC channel, and have excellent customer service. I wish I could say the same about many full-time paid software developers but I cannot. Those guys are aces, top-notch, and deserve your $25 for all the devices they destroyed making your exploit happen.
The biggest irony for me is that Sunshine was the reason I chose the M8 over the S5. I used to be a big Samsung fan until they started locking everything down six ways to Sunday. Knowing that I could S-off, and keep the freedom I did with my older devices, tipped the balance. For me, $25 was a no-brainer to essentially unlock every part of the device. It's almost like having a Nexus phone, but with better hardware.
As this thread has served it's purpose (to answer the OP's question).... I am closing it before someone feeds a magwai after midnight.
Thank you
I recently purchased Oneplus 2 after my previous phone Oneplus One. I got sick at the rate of development of OPT and just order Nexus 5x and here too I'm seeing that there are very few custom ROMs. I'm wondering whether this phone too suffers from development restrictions as OPT? OPT has several proprietory drivers which are halting development. As I can see, OPO and Nexus 6p both have tons of Marshmallow based ROMs.
Are the developers yet to jump on this device? Or are there other issues? I have limited ROM building abilities and would try to build some popular ROMs once I get my hands on this device. Please share your knowledge.
I'm wondering the same thing. Development was awesome on hammerhead- I thought it would be the same with the 5X.
I'm surprised too.
Sorry to this noob qn but its been a while since i had toucher custom roms. What is the difference between original android development and android development? IIRC, OAD is for CM roms related whereas AD is for 3rd party customised.

This http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/orig-development/guides-rules-posting-original-t3208283 explains the difference.
I see only about 25% more ROMs for the 6P than the 5X, I count 16 here. It is probably just that more developers went for the 6P with the larger size, front facing speakers and 3GB of RAM.
From what I gather, Google is hell bent on making android a flashoholic's nightmare. But there is no need to worry because of this huge developers' community. I'm sure there will be an alternative to Google's android.

Are you kidding me? That is such an incorrect statement. Other devices never have bootloaders that can be unlocked as easily as nexus devices or unlocking a bootloader on other devices will void your warranty.. Nexus devices have always been developer friendly have actually were always meant to be developer devices, not devices for the end user.
Hell they are more open that any other manufacturer. What device OEM do you know of that releases all rom source code? Kernel code all oems have to release, but not rom code. Why is it that aosp roms for other devices need to be hacked together to work right? Because the manufacturer does not release the binaries needed to do a proper build. Google releases these binaries for every nexus device so you can build the whole system from source without hacking things together to work. So your statement is totally false..
What phone do you know of that you can build the whole system and flash it to your phone and have it work? Besides nexus devices you really can't.. Not a rom released by OEM anyway.

Merely allowing bootloaders to be unlocked does not mean that Google is developer friendly. Now, look at the ugly warnings that pop up as soon as you unlock the bootloader of bullhead. Didn't happen when I used mako. And supporting developers doesn't mean only hardware, even if you look at software, rooting has become so difficult. Earlier, it was as simple as installing a custom recovery and flashing binaries. Now, its a long story. Moreover, as soon as you root Marshmallow, certain features such as Android Pay get screwed up (although I never use those features, have read a lot of complaints about this). Do you consider these moves developer friendly? I don't.
im thinking 6p was a better option for developers to buy meanwhile the 5x owned by consumers and those who want a smaller phone.
i was planning to unlock my bootloader right now but i realised i dont have a usb-c to usb cable so i can only charge it.
can you hide/remove this warning logo?
im pretty sure the roms will be ported over to each other in the new year

Fortunately you can hide the ugly logo by flashing modified splash files. They can be found in this forum.

That is just so wrong. On so many levels. But for one correction root is obtained with a single flash of one file and android pay works with it. Why do you post such nonsense?

LOL. Spoken like a true user. Google hates development so much it wrote a guide 'for carriers, OEMs, and developers' showing them how to build from source. (Hint: Check out 'Downloading and Building')
https://source.android.com/source/index.html
What you don't understand is ROM/app development and rooting are mutually exclusive. You can build and use a ROM and not have root. You can also root and not use a ROM. Your pathetic rant above is about root, not development.
You obviously don't understand security either. Google has been blasted for poor security in the past and are trying to change that. Hence monthly security updates. Root is a big 'ole backdoor. One that can be used by Uncle Sam, China, or your friendly foreign identity thief to steel your info. With root the user, the biggest security hole there is, is in control of who gets through the backdoor. Google doesn't trust us and nor do our banks. Its not hard to see why Android Pay doesn't work with us in control via root.
I don't blame Google and neither should you.

He thinks a nexus is hard to root? Seriously? He has clearly never owned an HTC device. The HTC Rezound literally had to have its circuit board shorted out to be properly rooted and have an unlocked bootloader. lol "Tap these two points once, then 1.75 seconds later tap them again. Too slow and it will reboot, too fast and it won't do anything. Just right timing will unlock the bootloader." Those were basically our instructions. OH how about the HTC Thunderbolt!! Having to type like 30 lines (or copy paste VERY carefully) into command prompt. Oh, but you are right "Guru", nexus phones are so damn hard. HAHAHAHHA!!

FYI I have owned HTC Sensation which required similar wire trick and M8 which required $25 to S-Off. But they where not developer devices. This developer devices tells (not warns) the users that the device iz corrupt because it's bootloader is unlocked. Worse than HTC which tells that warranty is void. But I guess it's difficult to explain it to you guys. So I concede. You are right, Google is the most dev friendly organisation, nexus is the most dev friendly line of hardware and you guys are the most pro devs out here.

Come on bro, tell us how big bad Google is ruining your phone because they hold your hand through building Android from source. It would make my afternoon.
Obtaining root on Marshmallow was more difficult than other versions of Android, or at least that is what the root God Chainfire has said. No one is arguing that.
Anyway, I've got more to say on this that I'll post later. It's time to go enjoy the weather and the great outdoors.

"Your device can't be checked for corruption..." That's what it says, not that the device is corrupt. If you want it checked please relock the bootloader is what is suggested. Come on just admit you were wrong and move on.

"mearly" allowing bootloaders to be unlocked allows a developer to do anything to the phone. You can port over Ubuntu touch to it if you wanted to because they release the binaries and such.. You can't do that so easily with other devices. So what there is a warning if you unlock the bootloader. It doesn't interfere with anything, it's just there to let say someone who isn't tech savvy with phones to know something is up. Moto has a unlocked bootloader warning as do many other manufacturers. And I have had no problems using android pay on my rooted 5x or 6p. I'm just rooted though with chainfires no system partition mod root method. I used android pay last night to get the 20 best buy gift card. Yes, they have made things more difficult from a root perspective but it's not impossible and think they needed to do this to make Android more secure. They seem to be wanting to make it more and more secure, which isn't a bad thing.. But that's not saying they are not developer friendly.. The fact that you can unlock the bootloader and pretty much flash any partition you want is not something you can do just by unlocking the bootloader. Look at HTC devices for example.. To be able to flash all the partitions you need s-off and can't do it by the traditional bootloader unlock. You have a device that you can unlock the bootloader, flash whatever you want, not lose your warranty unless you do something really stupid. Build the system from source, change the source.. That's not developer friendly!?! ? Come on..... What just because they make it harder to root now (which really isn't really that difficult if you know what you're doing which most seem to not) and they make it more secure make them not developer friendly? Again, what other phone do you know that you can take the source, change it, build it and have it work? Or port something like Ubuntu touch to it? You can't.. Other manufacturers just simply do not supply what is needed for developers to do this.. Google does supply this so developers could do this..

So I got a great deal from sprint about half off a S20u And I jumped thinking I'd be able to root it. it's already been 30 days and I'm going to return the device since I thought it would be able to be rooted. will a root ever be available. What device can I purchase from a US carrier that is able to be rooted and remove the bloat.

Don't hold your breath waiting for Samsung to offer an unlocked bootloader on any US variants. There are no US Carrier Branded or US Unbranded devices which can be unlocked. If you want no bloatware then the US Unbranded device is an option but if you need root you'll have to consider a Snapdragon International or Exynos Global variant. On these devices Carrier Aggregation and Warranty Repair would be challenging at best.
Dose one plus make devices that ship with unlockable bootloader?

Will the bootloader be unlocked in the future, is that a possibility, haven't been on the forums in 7-8 years. This phone is incredible, but the bloatware makes it useless kills battery can't disable apps. Someone help im over 30 days and don't know if I wanna return. I'm paying $15USD/MONTH FOR 18 MONTHS with buyout for $250USD so it's quite an offer to refuse. But I need root access and a custom rom on THIS baby!

The only one who can answer this is a well placed Samsung Executive, certainly not a CSR. No one has a crystal ball in this regard but I doubt it's going to happen anytime soon. Bloatware is the downside when you acquire a Carrier Branded Device and the $$$ you saved lose their value in the long run. Nowadays most carriers offer decent pricing on month to month prepaid without a long term commitment. Better off IMHO to wait a few months for price drops and feedback before purchasing any device. Saving a couple hundred on a smartphone you really weren't suited for doesn't add up.

just because someone achieves something and let ppl know it is possible but cant provide details for understandable reasons such rules is not in any way bragging about anything.
I dont make the rules on here, in fact I support the rules and enforce them even considering I am a moderator.
Just because someone doesn't want to tell you details (because its simply not allowed) doesn't give you the right to judge people and post negatively about them in public. If you have any issues with me or anyone else I suggest you send them a PM next time.
Showing people that it is possible gives hope to those who feel it is imppssible and hopefully encourages them to keep at it.
I have no reason to lie to anyone and as you can tell uf you did any research on my past activities/posts you should see that every time I achieved root I posted freely to XDA so everyone could take advantage of it. So hopefully you understand if I could post publicly I would have already done so.
I did try to help people out and had them PM me and was advised not to do so even via PM because it is a paid service of which selling these types of services are not allowed on XDA. It is a paid service because the means to unlock the bootloader requires a purchase from a third party. There is no way to provide a "free" method as well as said service is device specific so there is no universal method and each unlock is tied to one device.
Think of it similar to those websites that offer sim unlocks. They are paid services tailored to one specific device. Paid services are not allowed on XDA since typically people use these methods to profit and in the past there have been a number of shady schemes hence why rules were formulated.
I hope this clears things up and you refrain from name calling and negatice remarks to people such as your last comment I quoted.

Instead of complaining take the initiative and hit someone up on telegram that you know has done this and im sure they would be glad to guide you too the proper place. Like elliwigy said it’s against xda rules to post such stuff here so why complain about it here. There are threads in s10 and s20 threads with people posting stuff for US unlocked bootloader phones. Hit those people up on telegram or outside of xda because people want too abide by the rules of xda and xda does not want this stuff posted on their forums.
