HTC Confirms 2.3 Desire Plans
Bit of a news flash here, sorry if it's in the wrong section but this is more of an anser to an un-asked question, y'get me?
Anyway, HTC confirmed yesterday that they WILL be updating the current Desire range upto 2.3. This includes the Desire, the Z and the HD. Hope this helps with the concerns that HTC were ditching the Desire for the Desire S.
For the rest of the information, check out this page.
The link goes to CNET
*It's likely that rather than being 2.3, the Desire will be getting 2.4, which is the latest release from Google. This is no different from 2.3 but contains some very minor bugfixes.
Nice! A bit long to wait though.
Thanks for the info!
wow thanx for the great news! made my day

no problem, I was randomly searching the Internet for any articles that could shed any light on the current Desire situation we are all going through, and I just happened to find that neat post that was only put on there today. Alas the Desire lives on, I guess with it being so popular HTC decided to make it, however I'm not expert but from a Market view of things, I seriously doubt Honeycomb will be coming to the Desire range, as none boast dual processors and with the update coming so late, it would be a large Market downside for HTC, why develop Honeycomb for a device that's waited 6 months for a 2.4 update... Anyway I'm just glad that within my first few days of being at XDA that I have been able to help people with the Desire information, I know I only sourced it, but this stops a lot of peoples worries, and it looks promising that we WILL be getting the new sense time for a beer I think xD
We re starting to feel just like the Xperia X10 users and their updates it all goes according to HTC's plan. Nevertheless its good to know we'll be getting the new sense and and Android.

I think that the reaosn why it's taking so long really lies with Google. If they hadn't of had the 2.3 exclusivity with the Nexus S, then the chances are we would have our update much quicker. However HTC should be concentrating on Software just as much as new Products. Existing customers are just as important as potentially new Customers, and at the moment it looks like they are focusing their business on creating new products, and not updating the current ones. Not a good business plan at all.
with the way that our providers play about with it , as stated in the article it will be xmas before its out
I won't look forward to the update because waiting for updates ALWAYS dissappointed me in the past...

That's one of the benefits of De-branding. My HTC Desire came branded with the Orange software (which left me with 100MB of free space) I de-braded, updated to Froyo 2.2 and had something like 143MB of free space left, and whenever HTC release an update I immidiatley recieve it. My HTC has Orange logo's on it and everything, but it's de-branded.

Waiting is rubbish, HTC need to seriously take a good look at Customer Loyalty, but i'll wait HTC Sense is the best thing about the Desire.
Bah that is a long ass wait. I think I shall stick with CM7.

It's not the 2.4 update we can't wait for, its the new Sense, well in my case it is anyway. 2.3/4 isn't a very good update? It's a few icons and support for some other Hardware, Honeycomb should be interesting.

Hi, im a rookie on Android phones, just dumped my Xperia and now im playing w. desire.
From what i've read, the 2.6.32 kernel is close to perfect and i've seen and tried a couple of roms with that kernel, all seems to be working good, but since i like shiny things i gotta ask. HTC Sense and all that comes w/ that, do not work on froyo yet? or is there any other reason why cookers leave it out from their custom roms ? I tried to put the htc packages in the defrost 7d rom but could not flash it.. so errors where in the output (thou i'm certanly not the most gifted cooker )
Is there anyway I / we can have a Froyo rom + HTC goodies ?
Yes, there is. Wait until HTC will release its own Froyo build

Yes - when HTC release their Froyo update with Sense!
Sense is not just a launcher and makes some fairly deep changes in the Android frameworks. Without those changes, Sense won't work, and these do not exist in base Froyo.

Dave
thanks for the answers, ok so I'll have to wait till htc decides to update their phone, xmas 2010 i probably have a foryo with sense

The rumours say 23rd of june....
HTC announced that they would release Froyo with Sense UI for Desire by end of June. So let's keep our fingers crossed that they hold true to their word.
N.B. We will probably have to re-flash with custom ROM anyway after that to have proper A2SD.
From what I understand Froyo requires dev consent in order to move apps to SD. Am looking forward to see our XDA magicians do their magic to take this stupid requirement off.

Actually I heard the guy who posted that date originally got the info from a HTC support-hotline guy that gave away this secret information after he buggered him for a while. Who has top secret reliable information if not some poor lad at the HTC hotline trying to get rid of annoying customer that keeps him from ordering the next pizza Those top of the food chain guys always get the hottest news first.
And as far as I know hotline people are the most honorable members of our society and never lie or make uninformed statements That's what I heard

I expect this will have official 720P support to rival the iPhone. Probably DivX as well because they need something to trump the iPhone.

You're right jstegeman... Even by myself trusting and hoping these. But I had hope in Google as well and not having any fix release date look to me unprofessionnal... the term "shortly" used by them can mean days, weeks, months... Is it so difficult to say the release date will be the xx of xx year xx and keep that date?
Sorry but this might come from my Swiss habits, having the clock's at the right time, no improvisation, organization... I hate "not knowing" and am quite impatient lol

Do you really think that Google lets HTC wait for release like the rest of us? They have been working on 2.2 from early stages too, they must if they want to release timely 2.2 devices.
Secondly, they would never ever release a froyo build before google.

Sorry Swissman,
but a new release of a OS is NOT a FIX as you defined it.
There have been fixes available on the air, and - afaik - no other os-manufacturer does release on-the-air fixes like Google does.
Moreover, you bought a mobile phone with a working os, and - always afaik - you cannot blame Google in being supposedly in delay for a new release of an OS.
What should you think then about Microsoft for Windows 7 or Apple for OS 4????? Not to talk about Meego or else.....
Please have a cup of tea and try and have a different opiniono about "unprofessionality"....

Similarly CM team we know their abilities and Cyanogen and Kali they are truly the most brilliant ones and blessed one. I know soon very soon we will be enjoying gingerbread on our desire as Nexus one will get it very 1st and our Desire is closest brother to Nexus One

Very unlikely that it is gingerbread.
Oke this is getting sad, he admits his update is 28mb. There is no way that gingerbread is so small, second, like mentioned before in this thread, there is a HTC update 2.29.405.2 which happened to roll out around this time and is also 28mb, third the desire is a sense phone and it would be extremely unusual for HTC to release a senseless update for it.
It was fun while it lasted, but it will be a while before we see gingerbread on the desire officially.

Wow HTC is really scared of the mob. I heard the news too late though. I've already rooted. I bet it won't have a new version of sense, just keep the old sense with gingerbread in the background.

HTC annonced today, there will be an update with Gingerbread for HTC Desire

[*] All of the Above
Thank you all for your complaint
Thanks HTC... or not?
I saw in the news this morning that Desire wasn't going to get the Gingerbread update. Thankfully, now they have backtracked.
I wanted to say "Hey, HTC, thanks for that", but then I thought "Should I really be thanking them? Shouldn't all this even have occurred? Haven't they only done their job?"
So, well... all I can say is... glad to see I'll be getting official Gingerbread
I bet they were working on sense 2.1 for Desire, but there wasn't enough space so they will now leave sense to 1.0 and update only main software to 2.3
But damn, I was already excited to root first time and check some of these custom roms... Tho might still tomorrow...
Even if it's a good news, i'm still puzzled.
Why did they make such a previous statement... to backtrack within a day?
Anyway, i'm still happy to see GB coming.
Well my friends, this is good news. The power of loyal customers making comments!
HTC received 1000s of emails/twitter/facebook messages in the past 24huors since their first announcement that "Desire will not get Gingerbread".
Many people said they would not buy HTC again and were seriously annoyed at being promised Gingerbread before end of Q2 only to be told its now canceled.
I think HTC have made some marketing mistakes. They have released about 10 new handsets since the Desire and now realise that people are not ready to spend another 500euro after only 1 year with Desire. They were hoping people would just buy a new handset like Desire S etc. Forecasts earlier in the week showed that their stock price had fallen due to a concern that demand for their new handsets was lower than expected. I think this decision not to update Desire to 2.3 was a political and marketing choice not a technical one.
they now realise they were going to alienate 10000s of loyal users would would not go with HTC for the next phone!!!
I'm glad communities like this exist and can influence HTC in the way we have.
I was going to root my device today, and am currently reading up on it.
I might do so anyway for more internal space etc.
Good work all.
