SO basically have a new phone here with absouletely nothing done to it. I would like to root and get rid of the bloat, but i need to use knox for my work. I take it that means custom roms are out, but Ill be happy with 4.4 and ART.
Before I break anything, can you guys give me the basic run down or any thing i should know before i start rooting? I havent really messed with rooting much since the droid x days (what a great phone that was)
also, im curious...how do they send down OTAs and not trigger knox? isnt that technically a new ROM?
Go to original development thread and use the "root De La vega" method which doesn't trip the Knox counter but let's you keep root so you can uninstalled bloatware, you'll need to download odin. Basically just read everything in that thread it walks you thru it very simply.

I am considering picking up an N3 next week on my Jump upgrade. Has anybody recently picked up a TMO N3? I am curious what firmware has been coming installed on recently bought units and if it is compatible with the de la vega method.
Got my Note 3 6 days ago and came with the Mi7 firmware. I didn't care about not tripping Knox since I was installing twrp anyway. So I used CF-AUTO root which trips the Knox flag just to root. But if you're not planning on installing a custom recovery then use Root De Las Vega since I belive it will not trip Knox just for root
A friend and I both bought one within the last two weeks, both MI7. Denver, CO area
I spent too much time figuring out RDLV, considering I'm going to trip knox anyway as it doesn't appear to affect warranty exchanges with Tmo.

I basically have myself set up to run rdlv once I get the phone. I'll probably get the itch to take it all the way and flash TWRP soon enough. I might give it a week or so to see if any hardware issues pop up though.

Right now root de la vega only roots the Note 3 stock N900T odin flash 4.3 MK2 firmware.
After using root-de-la-vega to root your phone you still cannot flash custom recoveries, kernels
or custom roms.
So in other words, root de la vega will ONLY root your phone without tripping the knox counter
but it will not prevent you from catching knox (0x1) if you flash custom recoveries, roms & kernels.

Fwiw - N900t has only had one official firmware release. That would be the stuff it came w/ out-of-the-box - UVUBMI7.
Just wanted to clarify
Is mk2 a more recent firmware? Mi7 is compatible right?
I understand that flashing non tw roms or any recovery will trip the counter, so I'm going to hold off on that for a bit and just go with root, which should be good enough for now.

Same. Denver area, bought it 3 days ago. Mi7 RDLV worked fine for me as well w/o tripping Knox
I think de la vega method uses ATT firmware which has security hole in the hash function, so it doesn't trip flag and that's why you'll have MK version if you use that method, I believe all original T-mo notes have MI7. BTW above MJ7 de la vega trips the flag, so they already patch it up. Sometimes it's good T-mo doesn't update firmware quickly, LOL.
I purchased my 900T Jan 14th. The box shows a mid Dec 2013 build date. MI7 firmware

If it's MI7 that means it has all the KNOX goodies in it...
MI7 is the only firmware available for N900T as if now.
Yeah just switched to t mobile and chose the note and it has mi7, if I go with jump, how much do they care about custom status during trade in cause I want to flash some roms lololo

Short answer is "T-mobile doesn't care"
There's always the possibility that the sales guy would take a detailed look at it, but that's highly unlikely. I just jumped from the One to Note 3 yesterday and the guy checked the water damage indicator, turned the phone on to make sure it booted up and that was it. They want to process your transaction is quickly as possible and have you leaving the store a satisfied customer so they can move onto the next customer in line. That results in a 'perfect' survey response from you and that's reflected on their paycheck. If you leave unhappy and slam them on their review, they get read the riot act. One bad survey is trouble, more than one is grounds for termination. Walk into the store with a smile, don't ever mention anything remotely close to the word 'root', and you'll have no issues.
TMO doesn't care
I bought my Note3 from my local TMO office. My rep roots and puts custom roms on his phone too. He told me the same thing, they check for water damage and boot the phone, could care less if it is rooted or if Knox is tripped, we looked together and he could not find any TMO policy that doesn't allow it.
Be careful on new phones, the new TMO Sony has a locked bootloader at TMO's request.

I have been researching the different rooting methods lately since this might be the longest I've ever gone without root a device. I plan on keeping the stock rom since I use wifi calling on several occasions. What I really want is to customize the device using Xposed and wanam. So, on to questions.
1) Which root method do you recommend? I have looked into CF Auto Root and Root de la Vega. I don't particularly care about my Knox warranty or the ability to use Knox since it is basically bloatware to me. Does Root de la Vega wipe the entire device or not (I have read conflicting reports about this.)
2) I had intended to use root to access the old standby wifi tether however that doesn't seem to be an option anymore. (Unless anybody has a fix for it)
3) What all can be done with the Xposed framework and Wanam? I always used custom roms on my old T-Mobile GS2 and never got into any of this.
4) I do have several Square-Enix games installed and I have read that Xposed breaks them. Is the only workaround still to disable all of Xposed to play your game? Also, after disabling Xposed will I have to reset all the customizations I had made every time? Seems like that would be a lot of hassle.
5) Anything else I might be overlooking?
Thanks in advance for any replies. Just looking for a little help in deciding on whether or not to root this device since I have no intention (at this time) of flashing any roms and it wont allow me to tether.
I just realized that I posted this in general instead of Questions, could a moderator please move it?
I used root de la vega without knox tripping. Seems like if you don't care about knox being tripped than use kingo. But kingo usually don't trip knox either.

Did root de la vega wipe your device or did everything stay put?

For me, it didn't wiped anything.
I used CF-Autoroot. The fastest and easiest way. Took me 12 seconds to root. If you're going to put TWRP/CWM on your phone then just use CF-Autoroot. Nothing was wiped on my phone.
if you root your phone this way, and want to "jump" to an different phone down the road, does T-mo care if knox is tripped, or your phone is rooted when you bring it in to get a different one?
moving from Sprint to T-mo this week, and I dont know what the "rules" are with T-m0..
thanks
I guess I will use CF Auto Root. I spent the better part of 3 hours or so trying to use universal RDLV and couldn't get it to build my custom firmware.
I have a T-889 on Tmobile 4g that I want to root, I have rooted before but never properly. I remember I had a custom rom that was built from official that had features I swore already came with the phone (im crazy). Back to the point======》
I want to root my phone but I hastily upgraded to Android 4.3. Now I have Knox, which I don't want to trip because im on Jump! Which lets me upgrade my phone and switch.
I heard alot about this new method called "towelroot" I am skeptic to try this, also I hear you can't use Odin(what I used to use) because it will trip Knox. I trying to find a safe method that will allow me to root and unroot safely. Also Im also trying to find a way to back up the whole system because I fugged up before. And finally can someone tell me what will/won't trip knox counter.
Thanks Precursors(maybe wrong word)

Also I would like to here about the mods you have on your Note 2
Yesterday I returned to the land of the living when I was given a Note 3 to replace my Galaxy Lite. I feel as if I have crawled out of a dark hole back into the light. That said, I got the device and FOB6 had already been applied OTA. It has never been rooted or altered in any way. All of the information I see on the forums describes getting root by reverting to a previous release. I have very slow internet and downloading the original rom and the update to reapply via Odin would take me days. Is there a way, currently, to root with FOB6 already applied that does not trip the Knox counter or require changing the rom?

This will trip KNOX but you can do it without dowloading (downgrading) huge rom... (currently no guide without tripping KNOX, sorry)
Start from Step 1... (you don't have to do steps -3, -2, -1, & 0...Start at step 1...
Thanks for the quick reply. As I'm not sure whether I will need Knox in the future or not, I will hold off on these steps for a couple of days to see if a non-trip method is found.
You only need Knox if your phone is under warranty and its going to samsung for repair.
Otherwise it's just bloat.

Or if you plan to use it, since some of us actually have jobs that require security on our devices to access their networks. Oh, and if you plan to sell your device later and want to be honest about "like new" condition...actually, Samsung warranty is pretty low on the worries list.
Ditto on security protocol.
