I have a T-889 on Tmobile 4g that I want to root, I have rooted before but never properly. I remember I had a custom rom that was built from official that had features I swore already came with the phone (im crazy). Back to the point======》
I want to root my phone but I hastily upgraded to Android 4.3. Now I have Knox, which I don't want to trip because im on Jump! Which lets me upgrade my phone and switch.
I heard alot about this new method called "towelroot" I am skeptic to try this, also I hear you can't use Odin(what I used to use) because it will trip Knox. I trying to find a safe method that will allow me to root and unroot safely. Also Im also trying to find a way to back up the whole system because I fugged up before. And finally can someone tell me what will/won't trip knox counter.
Thanks Precursors(maybe wrong word)

SO basically have a new phone here with absouletely nothing done to it. I would like to root and get rid of the bloat, but i need to use knox for my work. I take it that means custom roms are out, but Ill be happy with 4.4 and ART.
Before I break anything, can you guys give me the basic run down or any thing i should know before i start rooting? I havent really messed with rooting much since the droid x days (what a great phone that was)
also, im curious...how do they send down OTAs and not trigger knox? isnt that technically a new ROM?
Go to original development thread and use the "root De La vega" method which doesn't trip the Knox counter but let's you keep root so you can uninstalled bloatware, you'll need to download odin. Basically just read everything in that thread it walks you thru it very simply.

Phone was lost, just got replacement this morning.
My last S4 had been rooted running custom firmware for months w/o issue.
Read through a bunch of threads, ranging from the opinion that the bootloader change + knox wont be a big issue to the sky is falling.
Is it recommended to root my phone at this time, I do have JUMP and would be replacing it once something better comes out? The phone is running 4.2.2, caught it trying to update to already.
Thanks.. I know this may seem redundant but haven't been active on these boards since I got my CFW going. Not seeking help in flashing or anything.. just advice

Up to you. If the stock rom is bearable and you wanna run the 4.3 stock rom then by all means, go for it.

Being that your'e using the T-Mobile M919, the whole KNOX bootloader situation doesn't pertain to you as long as you're sure you're on 4.2.2. Root it, flash it, theme it with Hello Kitty... whatever, it doesn't matter; you can still revert back to stock and reset any tripped counters. 4.3 is when the problems begin and the KNOX counter is implemented and can't be reset.

I second this.
SO LONG AS YOU ARE ON 4.2.2
- You can root flash do whatever, theme with hello kitty or barbie xD like lordcheeto said or keep it stock
- Install recovery and flash away.
- Will always be able to revert back to 100 percent stock
TAKE 4.3 UPDATE
- I think you are still able to root it without tripping knox counter. Can't remember the last status of that was. But as long as you root it without a custom recovery, i think you are ok. From what i can remember, the bootloader checks the recovery status and trips the knox counter based off the recovery that is on the device. If its different then stock, it trips. But double check with Google about this first.
- If you trip knox counter, you will NEVER (as of now and possibly forever) get it back to zero.
Rooting with safe root won't trip knox and also disables it. But recoveries, kernels, roms, etc will trip the flag

Root it with chain fire and never look back.
You're on 4.22, so you're golden. Just flash a rooted stock ROM that's on 4.3 and you'll avoid Knox.
I'm running 4.4.2 and never seen this Knox stuff.

Correct. I've rooted my my second GS4G on 4.3 MK2 and it did not trip the KNOX counter. If you're still on 4.2.2 MDL, then there is no need to update your bootloader. Simply flash ROMs through recovery and flash the 4.3 modem. You will have the goodness of 4.3 on KNOX-less 4.2.2 bootloader. :highfive:
Moving over here from the S3 side. Holy crap what a difference! Sold on the Note 3 and all future Notes. I don't think I'll ever go back.
I've been reading over the Tmo Note 3 forums for the last week leading up to me getting the N3 last Friday. I want to root but I don't care too much for flashing roms anymore. I'm fine with stock for the most part. I went through hundreds of flashes on my S3 and ended up sticking with an Infamous TW ROM from April last year and could care less for 4.3 on the S3. All I want is the ability to remove the crap, install ViPER for android, remove the stupid start up and shutdown sounds, and install Xposes+Wanam for everything else that I want.
I luckily got a N3 that still has 4.3 on it, and I want to keep it that way for now. I know that there are two ways to root, CF and De La Vega. I signed up for jump at the same time as getting the phone and so I don't know if that affects anything either.
Now I'm stuck deciding how to root,
If I root with CF I trip knox and void that but then I have the luxury if I want to flash something in the future thats not stock.
If I root with De La Vega, I keep knox and just keep it simple as far as the ROM goes.
What benefits are there to each method. Can I still upgrade when the time comes with either root method?
I want to make sure I do this right the first time.

Seems like you have a lot to consider. There has as you have read been a huge conversation on rather to trip Knox or not. Your choice. There are plenty of good 4.3 roms and 4.4.2 roms running on the 4.3 bootloader with fixes. You just have to decide on rooting or not to root.
I decided to keep it safe and go with UDLV. So far so good.
I use Kingo root because if anything happens to my Note 3 and I need to send it for repair, I want to be able to un-root.
I am not sure how to unroot if I root the phone with De La Vega, but when I had my Galaxy S4 Active, it was really a b*tch to unroot. I had to revert to the stock ROM (finding one is another story), but I believe if I do this with the Note 3, this may or may not trip Knox, but I am not taking any chances for a $650 gadget.
Anyways, just FYI.
Just picked up a new Note 3 and root is required to run an app that is critical to me.
I was just about to root and then call and cancel my insurance.. then I started noticing threads where people have claimed root on 4.4.2 without tripping the Knox flag.
This is a new phone, never before rooted. I do own Mobile Oden Pro and Triangle away and am willing to purchase other apps if needed.
Either way this phone will be rooted but I would like to keep my insurance warranty if possible.
Thanks
Edit.. custom recovery would be an added bonus not is not needed.

If your baseband is NB4 or NE6 you can use "Towelroot" for rooting
otherwise if your baseband is NF1 or NF4 Towelroot will not work.
Towelroot will not trip knox.
If you flash any custom recovery knox will get triggered
but so far no one lost their warranty due to triggering knox.
Without custom recovery you will not be able to flash any
custom roms.
Good luck!

You can use your insurance even with knox tripping. It only voids your samsung warranty, not your insurance. Just an fyi.

my friend tmobile insurance doesnt care if you have knox trip off
either way you pay one 175 for a new note or screen fix we so i dont matter if you damage the phone or the system
Thanks towelroot worked great with my NB4 baseband..and my needed app works great as well.

Just use The EffortLess Way to root NF4 without tripping KNOX!
Can build G920PVPU3CPD3 be rooted?
Which root method should I use?

Just install TWRP and flash SuperSU.
So there is noway to do this without tripping knox?
bump!
No.
Let me add on a bit to my initial response. Rooting the phone will trip Knox. Has been this way for quite some time. Discussed across many thread here and elsewhere.
Now the question comes up as to what do you lose by tripping Knox? Samsung Pay will never work for you. Android Pay may or may not work. Many people have been able to get it working at least in part, but disable Root (via SuperSu) when using Android Pay. I don't use either of those, so I don't care.
Then the question comes up if this voids warranty. The answer is only if you say "Hey, I rooted my phone and then broke something!" If you need warranty for a physical defect, go back to stock via Odin and you shouldn't have a problem. If you root your phone and then install a ROM not meant for your phone or local (like a Note ROM or an international ROM) you are probably going to mess something up that will be immediately obvious. The solution is not to do that.
Realistically, there aren't a ton of great ROMs available for this phone and most are based on stock anyway. No CM13 as yet. If you can live with your phone un-Rooted, that might be the wisest choice.
That said, I rooted my phone as soon as I got it. I went the full route, didn't care about tripping Knox and still don't. I have run both Renegade and TeamSPR ROMs and have been happy with them.
Now you can decide what to do.
Or u could root ur phone n install xposed on it ... Rooted S6 stock rom is now compatible with xposed its better than any custom roms out there

In my case, I only need temporary root. After that it maybe removed. So it would be nice to be able keep knox from being tripped if possible. Installing twrp is an additional step too that I would like to avoid again because it would serve no purpose since root would only be temporary. I also wanted to be sure that build G920PVPU3CPD3 could be rooted. Thanks for your input guys.
