Hey people,
A friend of mine is getting a white screen on his Galaxy Y, can't do anything with it. Even a hard reset (as found on the internet) doesn't work. (Hard reset being holding volume up, center button and power button).
Does anyone have experience with this problem?

Thats NOT a hard reset! Pull the battery, and insert it again. Now do your "hard reset". As in, holding volume up+home+power key together until you see the Samsung logo. Do a data wipe and restart. If that doesnt work, search for flashable firmware packages in the Development section. If that doesn't work either, replace your phone.
Hey guys,
Thank you both for your replies.

Stating what happened: He just suddenly had a white screen, unable to do anything with the phone. Rebooting, pulling the battery etc. didn't do anything.
Your second option didn't work either unfortunatly.

Sorry about that, I just read in about this phone, since it's not mine, and I already forgot about the second part.
Unfortunately, neither of this works. Every boot method gets him a white screen. Since he rooted his phone about a week ago, looks like he's going to need a new one.

try flashing the ROM using Odin from the PC
Might Odin be the same as Samsung Kies in dutch? Or is this an external program?
Assuming it's this program: http://odin-win.sourceforge.net/
Now how does this work? I've been flashing my phone for quite a while now, but I'm not familiar with this program. Can I just download a ROM (stock) from the developers part here?

its a tool for windows which lets you flash firmwares. You need to connect your phone to your pc is download mode.
Search Google and you will get lots of tutorials explaining the process.

Okay thanks for all your help guys.
My friend tried everything you people suggested, but nothing worked. He just had an expert look at it and it's just totally bricked. Gotta buy a new one. Thanks for trying anyway!
Sorry for bringing this up again, but I kinda feel sorry when people brick their devices. Yours doesnt have to be a brick. Read this. The instructions are on the first page. There's a link to Odin too. Hope for the best!

plss help me my SAMSUNG GALAXY Y GT-s5360 !! only white screen ?? how cant i fix it ?? i go to the recovery mode but WHite screen also ??
Iam faced same problem on my galaxy y
that is hardware problem
you need to change "DISPLAY IC"
This thread is here to inform people that if they try to flash anything through rom tools of any type they might "brick" or "soft brick" their phone or have a bootloader loop with samsung logo as I do. As of right now I am working on unsoftbricking my phone because I tryed flashing fonts and a bootloading screen. While the chance there is that it will softbrick vs flashing successfully.since I had several flash fonts go off without a problem and just never stuck, I assumed everything was ok. After deleting my current rom and going back to my stock rom i thought back at what steps i took to arrive at my bootloader loop it was after a few apps I downloaded from the market.Oden Flasher (not saying in anyway that was the cause) was one of them (blue android with black lighting down the middle). Now I am unsure if this is the "root" cause (pun intended, for those that think im talking about root access im not its just a joke). I am tyring to load a stock rom ATM via "Samsung Galaxy S3 ToolKit v2.3.0". So far no luck and it still stays at the samsung screen. I can get into Odin mode and get into recovery mode. when i try to manually load a rom i get e: signature verification failed and it aborts install. the only answer i have found was from an s2 device to basically create and load a temp recovery made by adb programing. I beleive i can do it but i havent seen anything on the SIII device for sprint and really dont want to try it unless i know that is the right way to go. Ill keep everyone posted so if they have or had the same problem this might be an answer. I will gladly take advice from someone with the right knowlege please. Thank you.
***UPDATE*** IM STILL LEARNING AND I HAVE CONTINUALLY SEARCHED THESE FORUMS FOR ANSWERS UNSURE OF.
***UPDATE*** INSURE YOUR PHONE!!!
I was finally able to recover a new phone. Sprint was actually the one that suggested this to me...
If you screw up your phone and don’t have insurance to replace the one bricked or soft brick revert back to a prior model phone that you used past before your Samsung galaxy s3. Then activate your old phone. Activate insurance when you complete activation wait a day or two and bring in the one you messed up and have it replaced by acting as if you have no idea what happened. Tell them a friend that used to work for sprint tried to fix the phone and you have no idea if it was rooted or have any clue what root is and that he was using Odin to try and fix it (ONLY if they ask it was ever rooted even then you should act as if you have no clue). They should replace the device. This is not 100% guarantee but it worked for me. For all of you who messed up like I did I hope this information helps you acquire a new or factory refurbished phone. Good luck. I have made sure to back up every aspect of the phone as I was excited to receive this new device I knew nothing about and realized out of my own stupidity I only did a nandroid back up and it would never flash back because of careless mistakes and greedy want to have another cool rom all the time.
Thank you to all of you who devoted some time to help me with my stupidity!
I'm trying to figure out why you were trying to use Rom toolbox to change your boot logo.........
You clearly got this screen before it let you attempt changing it.....which device did you choose???
Rom toolbox is a very noob friendly way of doing small mods and the ONLY thing that is going to brick you under the "interface" menu is going to be the boot logo changer, and you STILL have to intentionally select a device you are not using to do it........
^^^Add that info to your OP so everyone knows you tried to flash it even tho it clearly shows not S3 compatibility

done that nothing has happend. so when i finally was able to get back into my bootloader (after i have already restored it by flashing a boot image... even though i apperently dont know how to do that) everytime i tryed to manually flash the rom i got a sig ver fail. Im having a hard time trying to get a soft brick (sorry for the confusion im not good on terminologies) ive researched and come up with an answer from the s2 device when it comes to verification but i feel its a bit risky by loading a temp boot and then restoring cwm boot (actually making a temp bootloading program looks fun to me and plausable) but learning how to do all this is fun and experimental since i cant find a single post on what to do about my situation. im not just doing it to do it. i could just go buy a new phone but Im doing all this to learn it. i would appriciate it if people would stop harrassing me and just help me since i am willing to learn.

your welcome. Ive flashed a few times using font flashes but everytime i tryed it i always restored my main back up first

How the heck are you guys messing up switching fonts with RomToolbox. Never once had an issue and have changed it about once a week as the rom i'm on updates.
If you ODIN'd back to stock, it should work.
Did you ensure that everything got flashed in ODIN? Make sure you're flashing system, data, user data, boot/kernel etc.
Then repartition in Odin and flash those again.
It should work after rebooting. If it doesn't, I suspect its hardware failure and that you can get it replaced by going into the store.

That seems like a solid course of action. Make sure you play dumb when you bring it into the store - Just say you left it on your nightstand, the charger wasn't plugged in, but it still wouldn't get past the boot screen in the morning.
The regular procedure is that they take out battery, reboot, check water damage, etc. without actually going into Download Mode.
Well... tbh I dont understand nothing. But try to abd install twrp2 instead CWM. And try to flash any ROM you have in your phone.

Pull battery, reinsert, press and hold (in this order) vol (+), physical home button, then power. Hold all 3 until screen blinks a couple times, let off of power button but continue to hold vol (+) and Home. If you have a custom recovery, this should get you there.......
Problem being, if like u said in op you also flashed a boot logo(splash screen)different than boot animation - the boot logo is earlier in the boot process than recovery and when it gets corrupted, recovery options don't apply because the device won't be able to access it since the boot process is corrupted before the recovery
If it was ONLY a font that got you here, then you WILL be able to access recovery. Fonts are flashed to the /system partition, and if there in a problem , /system is the final step in the boot process and CANNOT NO-WAY cause ANY harm early enough in the boot process to prevent you from accessing recovery. So give it a try.

The pic shows ROM toolbox font installer- highlighted is the default location for flashing the fonts
Below is root explorer showing the s3 filesystem fonts are in the correct directory as set as default for ROM toolbox.
So like I was saying, if it was just a font this is a very simple fix for you. Boot into recovery, flash a ROM which formats and writes /system, fixing any kind of error that installing a font could have caused
Personally if you have certain fonts you like to flash and after a successful change of fonts with what ever apps you use. I would then create a zip file with your fonts to flash in recovery when changing roms. Its what I have done without issue. I have even added the fonts folder to gapps for easy install

Thank you for your advice. Ill try that before I turn it in. If i dont have insurance they will still replace it if i act dumb right? Just incase I will make sure i have insurance before going in. Thanks for helping me everyone with my screw up i never had this issue with HTC evo's and ive rooted, and flashed 2 of them and other HTC varients with out an issue. this is the first samsung and i cant figure it out on my own!
I continue get e: signature verification failed every time i try to load my recovery image, stock sprint imgs (every official one i can find), and still get the message every time. Ive never had this issue with HTC.
T-Mobile SGH-T989. Will power on, splash screen will appear, and screen will go black. No further activity allowed. Can use vol up/down + power to get into Android System Recovery, but wipe data/factory reset OR wipe cache partition options change nothing.
Daughter states OTA Update was in process, when she drove into area without signal. (The OTA Update occurred 02/06/13). Phone would not leave OTA status. She took out battery, and the above condition began.
No attempts have been made to manually change/upgrade ROM on phone.
DownloadedKies, and the phone is not recognized/not connect to PC
And of course, T-Mobile is no help, only offering to sell me a new phone.
Curious if others have/had similar issues, and if so, how they corrected. Otherwise, would like some assistance in installing a new ROM is possible.
(p.s. I have searched forums/threads and did not discover anything similar)

Try to boot into recovery mode or download mode, if you can then there's still hope. Try this: http://www.icsforums.com/forum/showthread/6351
If u can get into download mode you can Odin a recovery and then flash a ROM of your choosing, including stock gingerbread or ice cream, just as the phone was prior except with a custom recovery.
In short....follow tutorials on rooting your phone. When it comes time to "flash ROM" flash to whatever u had before the incident - only if u want to.

Yeah, you can get a stock ROM that can be flashed via Odin usually in a thread talking about unrooting (or returning phone to stock thread in development and/or general section).
Download the file (should be a good 200-300M area)
Basically, you need Odin (2.65 I believe and yes Odin version matters so if one doesn't try another).
Then, this is tricky, have USB cable connected to computer and other end of the same cable in your hand right as you boot the phone holding the vol keys as you would to enter recovery but plug the USB in as soon as you feel the boot vibrate (there is a real trick to it, it may take a few good tries until you get it).
You will then see a warning screen stating not to disconnect it or power off phone during the flash should be vol down to enter download mode.
Now you should see a driver install go on on computer. If it fails be sure to install Samsung kies and that has the drivers if not installed.
Now open Odin, you should see a yellow square appear on one of the com port boxes meaning it sees the phone.
Click the browser button to select the ROM in the pda box in Odin and hit flash or start or whatever.
Be patient, it may seem like it's taking too long at times don't touch the phone or computer, just wait the status window in lower left of Odin will say when it's done.
Just follow any unrooting guides as stated for a stock ROM file and the correct version of Odin.

Ohk, so first off all, go to www.sammobile.com and search for firmware tab there, click on it, then type in your device's model number in the search box on middle of the page and select firmware of your country and download it (note: you would need to sign up there to download, it's free to sign up there) and extract it to some location (say c:/tab/)
Now when you have downloaded the firmware (now I will refer it as FW), search and download Odin flash tool(version 3.1,or any other will work too) in there just click on ap button and select the md5 file extracted from the zip you downloaded,
It will take a few seconds to verify the md5 and after it is done verifying, you are ready to flash!
You will need to go to download mode, if u dint know how to enter download mode then here's how to, press and hold volume down+home+power keys for some time (if the device is on then you will need holds them fit about 10 seconds, it will reboot to download mode) it will come up with a screen saying "WARNING! FLASHING CUSTOM ROM CAN HAM DEVICE and blah blah" , just press volume up to continue
As I just read, you are already in download mode (Odin mode and download mode are one and the same thing) you can skip the above step, you can not get out of it without pulling battery, and as we can't pull battery of tab, you will need to flash anything to get out of it (remember, flagging wrong thing might brick your device)
And keep in mind that as the process will take about 15 minutes, so you should have enough battery to run it for about 1 hour, I prefer having at least 40%battery
When you enter download mode, connect you device to computer using USB cable and Ogden should say added in the box present in it, and there are some boxes on the upper side of Odin, 2 lines of boxes , one have big boxes aligned and other have rectangular boxes aligned below the bigger ones, the first rectangular box should turn "light blue" in color and it confirms that your device is connected!
Now see if re-partition is not checked, if it is checked and you start the process then you will brick your device instantly! If, but any ways, it is checked, then uncheck it and click start, it will take some time to finish the process, may be around 10-15 minutes, and after that you will be booted to android os! You can now use your device as it was before all the mess you created!
Go ahead and try this, it should work and bring your device back to life and just saying that, if by any means or any problem occurred and your device is not working anymore, don't point the figure at me, because I can only tell what to do, it's your choice to opt it or not
But there's only 0.001% chance that anything may go wrong, unless you unplug the cable in between the process of flashing
If the process don't help in once, just redo the process of flashing again and if it again don't work, just factory reset it and it should not to android
First boot will take some time, about 2-3 minutes, so don't panic, just keep calm
Hit thanks of I helped

In My opinion, yes or no, if you found anything that says it can retrieve things after format then you can always go ahead and try it out, the worst can happen is you get in a bootloop or someway you won't be able to boot to android, and as now you have what it takes to recover from that(my above post) , you are ready to take the risk!
I dint think there's an app (yet) that can recover data after format on Android, there's a software for Windows that can recover data after deleting them, but not after format
As formatting android don't actually format the drive, I think we can retrieve data, but I had not found any app for that yet
Just to tell you, the difference between permanent delete and format is that, permanent delete deletes the data but can not delete the signature of the files, and a file can be recovered by just it's signature, and formatting deletes all the signatures from the drive,
Some times, files can be recovered also after format, that can happen if you don't format all the drives, the files do create there signatures in other drives too!
So, good luck for finding a solution for recovering files after factory formatting, and I would like to request you that if you find a working solution then please share, it might help anyone!

folks, this is exactly what i did in order to be free from so called bootloop OK ! whether you like it or not it doesnt matter to me at all...but first let me tell you that i m quite a new member here and learner as well though this could be ma first step toword that xyz but i too have done some courses on hardware and software including C++ programming in 1998 OK ! just couldnt give it the time and efforts it'd take because of some other situations after i completed the courses.....much of what i do have forgotten now due to discontinuation but not all or everything OK !
my phone did bootlooped after flashing and rebooting which was one of the so called could be many reasons for so called bootlooping.....and i succesfully come out of it.......AND PLZ MIND THAT i had made myself clear saying its a simplest way to get out in which the screen is costant...after flashing that v72 zip file instead of v71......which was indeed successful i got screen shots saved here. everything went ok untill before hitting that reboot into system button...got it ? for 3 days i looked for the ways to get back onto recovery reboot.......now i understand that this is not a huge problem and you guys are gotten used to stroming your brain by going through such complications, and walk around everyday with taht mountain-size of infos inside you............plz dont get offended ! rather try out some simple methods that workds sometimes better than those complecated files manupulatings......thanks !
OK here it is : first reboot into recovery Twrp( by holding down both Power+Vol-Down buttons while device on power-off state ! that brings up usual LG Logo screen..the minute it appears just let go of the buttons at the same time.. simultaneously strike back and hold them down again. of course this lets us enter into Twrp Recovery Mode. Now... first off, hit the Factory Reset button. as soon as its done with go ahead and hit the Restore button next... it pulls up the screen that says: select Package to Restore... get that package below checked. on the next make sure all these system/data/boot are checked as well. no need to enable MDS verification at the bottom...Swipe what it says swipe to..... ! finally...that unforgetable sxcy 'reboot into system' Lo and behold..........! *
ur spamming here by creating multiple threads on same topic....its simple restore via TWRP no big deal
