[Q] Phone will not boot - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

T-Mobile SGH-T989. Will power on, splash screen will appear, and screen will go black. No further activity allowed. Can use vol up/down + power to get into Android System Recovery, but wipe data/factory reset OR wipe cache partition options change nothing.
Daughter states OTA Update was in process, when she drove into area without signal. (The OTA Update occurred 02/06/13). Phone would not leave OTA status. She took out battery, and the above condition began.
No attempts have been made to manually change/upgrade ROM on phone.
DownloadedKies, and the phone is not recognized/not connect to PC
And of course, T-Mobile is no help, only offering to sell me a new phone.
Curious if others have/had similar issues, and if so, how they corrected. Otherwise, would like some assistance in installing a new ROM is possible.
(p.s. I have searched forums/threads and did not discover anything similar)

Seems like power button is funk up

Try to boot into recovery mode or download mode, if you can then there's still hope. Try this: http://www.icsforums.com/forum/showthread/6351

If u can get into download mode you can Odin a recovery and then flash a ROM of your choosing, including stock gingerbread or ice cream, just as the phone was prior except with a custom recovery.
In short....follow tutorials on rooting your phone. When it comes time to "flash ROM" flash to whatever u had before the incident - only if u want to.

Yeah, you can get a stock ROM that can be flashed via Odin usually in a thread talking about unrooting (or returning phone to stock thread in development and/or general section).
Download the file (should be a good 200-300M area)
Basically, you need Odin (2.65 I believe and yes Odin version matters so if one doesn't try another).
Then, this is tricky, have USB cable connected to computer and other end of the same cable in your hand right as you boot the phone holding the vol keys as you would to enter recovery but plug the USB in as soon as you feel the boot vibrate (there is a real trick to it, it may take a few good tries until you get it).
You will then see a warning screen stating not to disconnect it or power off phone during the flash should be vol down to enter download mode.
Now you should see a driver install go on on computer. If it fails be sure to install Samsung kies and that has the drivers if not installed.
Now open Odin, you should see a yellow square appear on one of the com port boxes meaning it sees the phone.
Click the browser button to select the ROM in the pda box in Odin and hit flash or start or whatever.
Be patient, it may seem like it's taking too long at times don't touch the phone or computer, just wait the status window in lower left of Odin will say when it's done.
Just follow any unrooting guides as stated for a stock ROM file and the correct version of Odin.

Did I FU my ohone?

I have an epic touch. I rooted my phone and installed ClockworkMod Recovery, and StarBurst ROM. I could not tell if it worked because the screen and icons look exactly the same as factory. I then tried to add my company's email which asked me to restart the phone in order to encrypt some information. After it turned off, I have not been able to turn it back on. I see the start up screen (i.e., the word "Android" flashing) with no sound (which I believe is part of StarBurst). Then the screen goes blank and it stays off. Did I screw up my phone? What can I do to fix it? I tried a factory reset but that did not work. I would appreciate any help. I did try to search but could not find anything directly applicable. Thanks.
Well, I am able to boot it up. However, when I try to reinstall clockwork, I get an error stating that odin cannot open the serial(COM) port. So I cannot reinstall clockwork, or a stock kernel. I am unsure what I should do next. Any idea why odin does not recognize my phone?

You do have the drivers loaded right? Try a different cable.

It wasn't working and then it worked out of nowhere. Now I am trying to install a stock kernel but it doesn't work again.
I have the drivers downloaded when I installed kies. I tried another cable and it still doesn't work.
Ugh, sorry to hear it.
You might want to check the following:
1) Ensure Kies isn't running in the background.... it doesn't play well with Odin. Use your computer Task Manager to close any Kies processes that are running.
2) If 1 doesn't work, try restarting your computer. (It can't hurt)
One other thing I thought of: The phone is in download mode when connecting to the computer, correct? You get into download mode by shutting down phone, then pressing Volume Down & Power at the same time. At the prompt, press Up to continue.
(You've probably tried all of the above, but just trying to cover all the bases)

Turning off Kies did the trick. I was able to get odin to connect to my phone. I downloaded the stock kernel onto my phone. But I still have the same issue. It constantly cycles through the start up screen and doesn't progress past that point. Ugh...
I remember seeing something about how to handle bootloops after using odin on the international SGS2 forum. No guarantee it will work, but let me go find that post... be right back.
Updated: The post-Odin bootloop fix posts on int'l SGS2 forums all reference reflashing with stock firmware. We don't have that available yet for E4GT :-(
The only thing I can think of would be to go into stock recovery and do a factory reset
1) hold down power & volume Up
2) use volume up/down to select "wipe data/factory reset"
3) follow prompts
I haven't tried the above to recover from an E4GT bootloop -- for all I know it could make matters worse.
Sorry I can't provide more help :-(

If you can put your phone in download mode you're not bricked.
Use Odin to get back to stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258628
Once that is done use CF Root to root with Odin

If you are stuck in a bootloop after running the recovery file in odin (it's 1.6 GB unzipped), which is the way things sound, pull the battery and go into stock recovery. Do this by replacing the battery, holding volume up, home, and power button until the ble recovery shows in the upper left then let go. In stock recovery, scroll down 9using volume button) to wipe data/factory reset. Coose that option with the power button. You will lose ALL data on your phone and you will have to go thru setup again. When it's done choose reboot in the menu and let it reboot. Don't freak if it takes a while. In a minute or 2 you will see the screen dim and it will boot. Go thru setup, root again, install custom recovery, and if you were wise enough to have done a backup tp your SD card, you can get it back.
Good luck, there are tutorials on Youtube if you care to search for them. Here's a good one -

I think the issue is that he's making things more complicated than he needs to.

Op, you're a little confusing.
Are you able to successfully use ODIN and flash stock firmware, but get stuck in a boot loop or freeze on Samsung splash?
Or ODIN fails?
From you're posts it sounds like both issues are occurring, but I think it's a posting conflict, and your issue is one or the other, unless I'm wrong, which I've been before
when i try recovery it goes to boot saying loading recovery than it goes full off and after boot screen again...i tried twrp and still nothing but the good thing is that odin passed that ..the only thing it didnt fail....maybe i didnt have the right rom ...i am downloading the official i9505 rom and i hope it will work this time....but plz if any1 can help i would apriciate it

Make sure you guys ODIN the correct Stock Firmware for your model device.
Make sure you ODIN the correct Custom Recovery for your model device.
And if you're Rooting, for example with CF-AUTO-ROOT by Chain fire, make sure you ODIN the proper version for your device.
In addition, check your USB cable to ensure it's working properly 100% of the time and have enough battery juice to perform the above procedures.
Odin problem
I have double check all the stock firmware. Got the files from 247extreme.com, given to me by DarkMenace. Several downloads of the same files...nothing seems to pass the MD5 check. The USB cable is 100%.

Go into Stock Recovery
Wipe data and Factory Reset option
Boot
And everything will be good
I had the same happen to me regarding the Android on his back with a Red X.
I had to research to find what this mmeant and what to do.
After ODIN, I would freezeion Samsung splash twice.
Pull battery
Install battery
Press Power and Vol up buttons till you see the upper left hand blue script, andtrelease buttons to get into Recovery.
I went into Stock Recovery and chose the option where it says Factory Reset.
I then Booted Successfully.
Afterwards, I ODIN'd Custom Recovery, TWRP 2.5.0.2

[Partially solved][Q] GT-N7100 download mode problem

Hello,
It's been a while since I last stepped foot in the xda forums as I've been happy with stock, however when kies pushed the 4.3 update to my Note 2 I've started having problems - my phone will not sleep. After 2 min timeout the display turns off and immediately turns itself on again. It then goes into a loop where it turns off and on again every second until I unlock it. This is playing havoc with my battery life (I only get about 6 hours from full charge now). I've tried disabling any setting that might cause this (like smart stay etc.), I downloaded wakelockdetector (doesn't detect anything), I've tested my sensors and sleep mode with #*0*# (sleep mode has the same problem here), and I've done multiple factory/hard resets (x5).
I want to go back to 4.1.2 because this problem only started happening with 4.3 except now I have a different problem - I can't get download mode to work so I can't flash any recovery/firmware. I get the download mode screen up via the usual 3-key method, however once I'm there it seems to disable my volume keys because they stop working. I can get into recovery mode without any problems and the volume keys work fine there, but once it loads up the download mode screen and prompts me to press vol up to start or vol down to cancel, no matter what I press nothing happens. I have to hold down the power key to reboot.
Does anyone have any idea why my Note 2 is so broken?
Would really appreciate some expert help here. Thanks in advance.
Other stuff I've tried: I've tried with and without my SDcard. I've tried formatting my SDcard. I've tried taking my battery out for 5 mins and then go straight to download mode, but still my vol keys won't work.
I got kies to do a firmware reinitialisation which downloaded 4.3 again and flashed my phone a second time but still the problem persists.
I guess I have no choice but to put my hope in Samsung support. It's a real kick in the teeth that the nearest official support centre is an hour and a half away from me. I think this will be the last Samsung product I buy.

How?
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but with 4.3 comes with knox and a locked bootloader. I can't load philz or twrp zip from recovery because it errors with an unsigned message and since I can't access download mode I can't use odin.
Shut down your phone. pull the battery out. connect your tether cable to the phone and USB to computer. start oden, put tar file in PDA box. don't change any other settings. Put your phone in download mode by pressing both up/down volume buttons (not Power) and insert the battery. once in download mode, click on Start on oden. As for the bloatware, you are going to get whatever apps that are in the tar file. I think Some of the bloat has been removed. Not sure what, but it seems most of it is still there. I think DriveSmart is gone

Hi!
Did you try to flash with mobile odin? It might be the solution if you can't access to download mode (which is weird by the way...)
I have same problem
i just flash new bootloader kitkat
"Bootloader If you have MJ5 or later bootloader then no need otherwise you have to apply Reboot and wifi Fix from post #3 above
You can get idea about current bootloader with info application
If You are not worried about warranty then I strongly recommend to flash Kitkat bootloader.
Here is Kitkat bootloader from N7100_ND3 "
and now my phone was on and it will stuck on samsung logo...
i m also not able to install stock rom
help me to downgrade 4.1 old bootloader.

Thank you!
Mobile odin worked. Got the pro version to thank Chainfire. Also managed to get root thanks to Kingo and I'll be donating to them as well.
Unfortunately even after flashing CM10 it hasn't fixed my sleep problem. Well, maybe I've got a hardware fault after all...funny that it coincided with the 4.3 update. I guess I've voided my warranty now but on the bright side I've finally ditched Samsung's bloatware and stock android. Here's hoping I can find a fix.

[Q] HELP with S6 Edge Brick/Flash!

Hey guys,
So today, I got a notification saying to update to 5.1 for my T-Mobile Galaxy S6 Edge. There was a error so I plugged it into my computer and used the Smart Switch app they recommended to install the update to my phone. After Smart Switch downloaded the update and installed it onto my phone, my phone is now stuck at the first bootup screen where is just says "Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, powered by Android"!! I don't know what to do now....I tried downloading the official 5.0.2 ROM for T-Mobile and flashing it using Odin 10.6 but it gives me a NAND Write Start FAIL! every time...I've been reading up on this forum for a couple hours now but my eyes have completely tired out. Was hoping I could get some suggestions/insight on what I might do. I believe there is ONE option which is to type the model # + serial # into the Smart Switch program which factory resets my phone but I was hoping to avoid that since I forgot to back up my photos recently (stupid I know..) Anyways, any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

You need to look into finding the official Odin package (it is likely that only the 5.1.1, or "OF6" version will work now) for your device, and using Odin to restore your phone to the correct firmware version.
One of the places you an get it is from here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/48252/G925TUVU2COF6_G925TTMB2COF6_TMB/
But there are alternatives/mirrors around here somewhere that might work better. Good luck.

Just downloaded the firmware from that website and was able to flash it using Odin (says PASS!) but it's still stuck at the galaxy s6 Edge screen for the bootup...any insight or suggestions on what I can do?
Thanks

Ouch, that doesn't sound good. Are you sure your device is the G925T ? To be absolutely certain, you can look on the back of the device, in fine print, it should show the model number (SM-G925T is technically the full model#).
Otherwise, there's some reports around here of this (or similar) problem when they've had their phone carrier-unlocked or otherwise have done anything with their IMEI stuffs in any fashion. I would browse through the forums here to see if there's a good solution. I'm not a good source for "that side of things."
Edit: You might look into this thread or, for another possible fix, this thread.
I can't vouch for the authenticity or safety of flashing anything but official stock firmware, but it sounds like the 2nd link is working for some.
Flash twice in download mode.
After first flash do not let phone reboot.
When phone starts to start up do button combination vol down, power & home button.

This is good advice. To elaborate, there's two ways to achieve this:
1) Uncheck the "Auto Reboot" option in Odin. It might be greyed out, in which case you can edit your .ini file to achieve the same. Once the stock package is completely finished flashing, you can manually reboot straight into download mode by holding down the buttons until it comes back on into download mode.
2) If you're quick enough, the "easier" way is to wait until the Odin flash is complete, and immediately upon its auto-reboot (goes to black screen on the device), hold down the buttons to force it into download mode.
And then, in either case, flash the package again. It should be taking a few minutes to flash - it's huge. Particularly the SYSTEM partition, which is over 3.5gb.

Just tried to flash it twice with Odin but it's still stuck at the boot screen :\
Hopefully one of the links you posted above will help! Will update back soon.

Well, the second link you posted in a previous post worked!! Thanks!!
Sadly, I wiped the data/factory reset once since it was suggested and I lost all my photos...(sigh) I imagine that there's no way of just getting those back?
Diskdigger, Google for free apk.
Or buy in playstore.

Google is very invasive with your system, the cloud storage that came pre-installed works great or Dropbox even better.
Pp.
Not sure what your getting at being invasive.. Dropbox doesn't offer unlimited, and didn't even know there was a stock cloud storage app from Samsung pre installed, guessing though that's not unlimited either.

Hey AOU,
I ran into this issue again recently after I tried to factory reset my phone.
It got stuck on the Galaxy S6 Edge screen.
I was going to use the second link like I did before but it seems like the megaupload file isn't available anymore...Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks!

My HTC M8 Stuck at ONE Logo once restarted. No Recovery, No DWNLD mode available.

I've seen already this thread suggested by XDA thread locator.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/verizon-htc-one-m8-stuck-htc-logo-t3163088
But I'd try to explain as simple as possible the whole situation which happened hours ago.
Don't know what happened but my mothers phone went off and restarted with htc one logo on it and nothing else later.
Power button itself doesnt work and is not responding.
Configuration PWR + VOL UP gives me restart but no recovery mode, giving me sound effect of restarting phone and ONE logo on it without any other reaction whatsoever.
PWR + VOL DWN zero reaction
PWR + VOL UP & DOWN pressed together restarting the phone and then gives me HTC ONE LOGO and nothing else.
when Phone is plugged in to the computer and I'm forcing the phone to restart it shows me new Device on the computer as a CD Driver every time.
So I think there is still hope to get this guy back to life.
It's running on custom rom but unknown version because it was purchased as a refurb from ebay 2 years ago and it was running just fine utill this very day.
I'm absolutely noob with flashing twrping etc so please ELI5 if possible, any type of help will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Hey, I had this same problem a couple of days ago. Here's what I did to get the phone into fastboot, from where you can install a recovery, factory reset etc.
1. Hold the power button + vol up button for about 10-20 seconds. This should shut down the phone.
2. Hold the power button + vol down button to restart the phone back into fastboot.
If you can get into fastboot, there are plenty of guides which can help you flash a twrp image. If you want me to give you some instructions on that just reply and let me know. Good luck!
Note that this phone doesn't have download mode (as some other Android devices do); nor is there a button combo to go directly to recovery. But you can almost certainly still get to bootloader, and from there boot recovery. In the current condition, you can get to bootloader by:
1) Hold Power+ vol up (as you have been) to restart the phone.
2) Once the screen goes dark (signaling it is about to reboot) let go of the buttons, and only hold vol down
3) Don't let go of vol down until the bootloader screen appears.
4) If the above sequence fails, its virtually always because the user just didn't get the timing right (either started pressing vol down too late, or let go too early). Just repeat steps 1-3 until you get to bootloader.
Once in bootloader, try to reflash the ROM, or restore a TWRP backup (if you have one). Spontaneously stuck on HTC logo screen is often a result of the OS/ROM becoming corrupt or otherwise damaged, and flashing/restoring the ROM will often fix it.
Thanks @redpoint73 I've managed to get to the preinstalled recovery.
Sadly reflashing/factory reset failed few times due corrupted files.
I'm ok with the fact that I lost the data on the phone since most of it was stored on the cloud.
Now I need ROM to flash on the phone thru recovery but I don't know which one would you reccomend.
It's my mom's phone so basically reliabilty and robustness over flashing lights and numerous unnecessary functions.
Version of android doesn't really matter.
Thanks again for help so far.
Can I put the rom I'm about to flash on external SD Card or I have to transfer it thru computer to the phone?
TWRP might be extra helpful or the recovery it's functions are just fine?

I'd need to know more about the phone in order to give any suggestions.
With the phone connected to computer, boot into fastboot mode, and (assuming you have fastboot setup on your computer) do the command: fastboot getvar all
Then post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).
Also, what version TWRP (if that is the recovery installed)?

You will be able to flash a ROM from the SD card, if using TWRP.

Not sure what is being asked here (can't quite understand). Are you saying that another recovery besides TWRP is presently installed?
@redpoint73 I don't have TWRP but this...
Maybe pictures will justify the real situation.
I don't have the fastboot preinstalled on computer. (yet)
I wouldn't mind link to the pack with "must have" to complete the process

You have what is called the "stock recovery" or official HTC recovery.
You can't flash anything but OTA updates, or other official (HTC) signed zips with this. You need a "custom" recovery like TWRP in order to flash things like custom ROMs. So I'm curious what you meant before when you posted:

What exactly were you trying to "reflash", what were the exact steps, and the results (specific error messages, etc.).
I did the factory reset but it didn't help still stucking at ONE logo like posted initially. So this is basically the situation right now. I was able to get to recovery but nothing else.

Okay, so you're confusing the terms. Factory reset doesn't flash/reflash anything (flash meaning to install some firmware or software to the device). The only thing that factory reset does is wipe user data.
At this point, I'd suggest the best/easiest course of action in the current conditions (stock recovery, locked bootloader) would be to run the RUU intended for your device. Your device is the AT&T version, so the RUU can be found at the bottom of the page (and instructions on how to install): http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-att/news/
RUU is a complete factory image. You download to a PC (PC required, won't work on Mac or Linux) connect the phone (booted into bootloader-fastboot mode) then just run the RUU, and it will do the rest.
I'm confidant this will get the phone up and running. Your mom may not like all the AT&T branding and apps, if it wasn't there before, and AT&T is not her carrier (one of the main reasons for these devices to have custom ROM - to remove carrier branding). But we can cross that bridge (if need be), after we get the phone working.
Installed Software, downloaded RUU from website provided, turned phone into fastboot before installing RUU.
Something started happening with the phone during installation but installation itself cant be finished, it's an endless process of update, phone is already plugged 3rd hour or so to the computer but the update status remain the same.
Should I try different approach?

It just gets stuck sometimes. Just kill the process, and start the RUU again. It will probably work fine on the next try. It's a bit scary, as it says not to stop the process or disconnect the phone while it's running. But if it gets stuck like this, there isn't anything else you can do.
Good News, it's working. But it's bloated to the bones. How I can get rid of the carrier unnecessary software?
I was to afraid to kill the process during update to avoid scenario of bricking my phone completely.
But It's working!
