Hi,
I was wondering if anyone else has noticed that their LTE transfer speed drops after 3-4 seconds of high speed bursting.
I can consistently see this in the speedtest.net app, and also in large google market downloads.
The problem seems to kick in when the transfer speed goes over >~24mbps, and then it will just suddenly drop right down to pretty much 0, before slowly continuing at a much reduced speed. Same happens with the upload speed, but it seems to kick in around ~20mbps or less.
I've seen this at various places around the Bay Area in CA, so its not related to any local radio towers :-/
I hope my radio is not a lemon.. I first saw this when the phone was straight out the box, but I just shrugged it off. But its persistently there... (and I've 0x1'd my know now..)
Check out some T-Mobile specific forums for your answer. I don't think it's your phone. Try setting your phone for HSPA+ on the 1900mhz band to see if that is different.
It's believed that tmobile is still working on their tiered QoS. If you have unlimited you get bumped, for now.

Thanks, I will try the band idea.
I've asked the question on Tmobile's support forms, the issue may be QoS related, but who knows.

How do we do this? And any issues if you do?
i get this issue as well. one thing i have noticed is that when you download a large app (50+ megs, which is actually a small app..) it will throttle me to less than 500 kbps after the first 20 seconds or 50-60 megs of progress. it stays there and never speeds back up.. i have cancelled many 100+ mb apps during downloading because they were literally constantly slowing down to the point where i didn't think they'd even finish until i hit my home wifi point. it does this on stock rom, darthstalker rom, saber kernel, compulsion kernel, stock kernel... i don't think it's the device, i think it's the service. going to keep on testing different combinations and see if i can find a fix irregardless. slow and insanely inconsistent data speeds are gonna make me go back too ATT even though i just switched to T-Mobile 2 days ago. a reliable connection is worth the extra $40/month to me.
*it's also worth noting, since i activated the TMo service yesterday, i haven't once seen more than two bars of service although i am in an area that is not largely populated and vastly surrounded by "great connection" area on T-Mobile:s page.

Are you on the 5GB/$30 prepaid plan? I wonder if the throttling is an unofficial policy on the prepaid plans.
Nope, on the normal plan that was supposed to take the place of the contracts. I get a bill at the end of the cycle like I did with att. Still happening. Its like anything I download hits a throttle after the first 200 megs. Lte speeds of 3-6 megs per sec, then bam... Sub 1 meg per sec the rest of the download. Even if there's 1gb+ left to go.

Recently, I've personally concluded that it has to do with T-Mobile working on towers in my area. There was a period of about a week or so where I was experiencing odd performance on both HSPA+ and LTE, where speeds will be fantastic for about 3-5 seconds, before dropping WAY down. Things have greatly improved recently. I did several tests the other day in several locations, and only one tower in particular resulted in the odd speeds in multiple tests. The next day, things were perfect. Then again, they recently went from 5x5 LTE to 10x10, so that could've had something to do with it.
My recommendation is to wait it out.
FYI: I'm on the $30/mo. prepaid plan (5GB @ high-seed, unlimited @ 2G).

I'm sure I'll reap the benefits of this (if it happens...) very quickly, as I live in one of the first areas to get anything from any carrier.
....and that also means I'll be able to get decent home internet speeds, finally(via tether).
Well hurry up and fix the Oxnard Ca sites, evenings and weekends my download speeds are less then 70kbps. From 3am to 9am during the week I can get 1.5 Mbps down.
Thank god for my ipad sim in a mifi.

You should be able to get over 1mbps if Verizon has 3G in your area
Thanks. Where don't they have 3g network? lol.
Anybody ever do any side by side speed tests with other devices? I ran a test with three E4GTs, an EVO 4G and an EVO 3D. Both EVO's cleared over a meg d/l while all three E4GTs (including mine) barely broke 200 kb/s. Sprint needs to get their network up to snuff no doubt but I think there is also something going on with the hardware/firmware of our phones too. I spent an hour on the phone with Sprint and Samsung today about it (of course they weren't able to help and played dumb).
For a while I was pulling my hair out, and updating prls, having Sprint reset my account and reprovisioning my phones.
E4GT, Optima S, Evo 4G and hacked Droid Incredible all scored the same pathetic sub 100Kbs in my area. I ran again at 5am and all of them managed above 1Mbps. Just over loaded towers in my area. Its worse since the Iphone.
I guess Anaheim Hills, CA is unaffected. My speeds have been great.
The Evo3d received a network service update a couple days ago and a lot of people who received it said they are getting better 3g speeds all of a sudden. Just check the second link I posted up on this thread. So comparing an Evo3d to anything might not be fair at the moment. All depending on your area that is. I received a network service update on my girl's Evo3d and it still gets the same 3g speeds as my ET4g. Just average speeds in my area. Here's the link explaining network changes in the Bay area.

Maybe they gave in and just gave it the ENG radio. When I had my E3D and I flashed the leaked eng radio (I forget the version number) my speeds were anywhere from 30-60% faster. It might have affected battery life, but, who knows...battery life sucked on that thing regardless.
I always found it strange that every radio update just seemed to make it go slower and slower...I think Sprint was up to something...
When T-Mobile throttles you after 2gb of HSPA+ data usage, do they throttle you to 3G or down to EDGE?
I'm wondering because I'm giving a lot of consideration to switching to T Mobile to get the SGS3 and I was wondering this.
Also, anyone who has T Mobile now, what is your usage like? How many gigs do you use monthly?
Hey from what I can tell they throttle you down to 2g, I have the 5 gb data plan you should call customer loyalty or retention and ask for the android preferred plan its 5 gbs for 20 worst they could say is no. I've been with tmo for about 6 yrs and have been very happy with them. Had Att/Cingular before and hated their customer service, also reception with tmo is actually very good since they have wifi calling it allows me to get reception where many carriers just don't get reception.
Data usage wise it really depends what you use your phone for I use around 4 gbs monthly but I tether heavily about 6 hrs a week, streaming youtube and pandora. If I didn't tether I would prob use less then 2 gbs I would think. It really depends just what you do on your phone. (I dont use my phone to watch Youtube or anything I just tether).
I have a 2gb 4g plan and on occasion I go over my limit, however, I have not noticed a big difference in speed. I'm sure if I ran a speed test I would be able to see drastic change in speeds but for steaming music and video I never have to wait for it to buffer or anything.
The only times I really go over my limit is if I am on the road and I am tethering my laptop or tablet.

When you go over your limit, you get throttled down to EDGE until you come up on a new month, and yes, it is very drastic going from 4G to edge :-/.
You can stream music *google music/pandora* on edge.
Everyone's answer is going to vary wildly on data usage.. I had 5 GB, streamed music everytime I was in the car, surfed a lot while away from wifi .. but when I was around wifi I kept it on.
I averaged a little over 2 GB .. only hit anywhere close to 5 GB a month that I didn't have wifi at home.
I had T Mobile before. but the throttle was from when I got into over 5gb. Since this is 2gb I figured they'd put me on 3G.
I think technically they throttle you to EDGE speeds, but your phone still uses WCDMA (3G).

Isn't T Mobile a GSM carrier? What would they have to do with WCDMA?
WCDMA (UMTS) is the 3rd generation standard in the GSM family. If you have 3G or HSPA+ labeled as 4G, and you are on a GSM carrier, you are using WCDMA. Confusingly, CDMA carriers like Verizon, Sprint, and US Cellular, do not use WCDMA at all.
Just wanted to say I called retentions regarding this issue today and there was nothing they could do for me save telling me my etf and how to port my number to srpint. should I call back and try to get a diff. answer from another agent?

fyi, when you're throttled, you keep normal icons/connections but are throttled to 100kbps. NOT 2g, not 3g but max of 100 kbps regardless your connection type (can still say 4g, it's just throttled).

This is the case. I'm still on HSPA+, but I hit my limit yesterday, and now I'm getting about 60kb/s down on speedtest. Unfortunately, that I've been able to find, most methods of bypassing the throttle limit no longer work, which is rather annoying, as I still have a week and a half before my billing cycle resets and 60k is too slow to stream music comfortably.
From someone who works for them..in communications they tell us it's a 2.5G speed that it is being slowed down to. Though these speeds are not always real life, based on where you live, how many many people are near and using the same tower etc etc. No one's experience will always be the same. Edge can sometimes be okay to use or it can be a pain.

T Mobile reception sucks here in Kansas City, and when you are on the move really. When I got throttled, I was getting 2g speeds, and it was horrible. I couldn't use any app that used data.
T Mobile only has fast 3g in some cases, I would not consider their '4g' 4g because it was not very fast in the first place.
I would not recommend them.
I have been with T-Mobile in Bloomington, IL for over 7 years now. The only thing I have ever complained about is data speeds in my area. So, when I read the following press release from T-Mobile last year, I was super excited.
http://newsroom.t-mobile.com/articles/new-4g-markets-nov2011
In that release dated Nov 16th 2011, it says
"T-Mobile 4G markets where HPSA+ 42 service is launching today:
Bend, Medford and Corvallis, Ore.; Benton Harbor, Mich.; Bloomington, Champaign–Urbana and Springfield, Ill.; Columbus, Ga.; Hagerstown, Md.; Montgomery, Ala; Yuba City, Calif."
So, I have not seen a difference in speeds at all over the past year with the following phones, HTC Senseation, Galaxy Nexus GSM, HTC One S and the Galaxy S3.
I have never gotten anything above 3Mb anywhere in town. Now, when I call T-Mobile to inquire about my slow speeds, they tell me only 3G is offered in my area and that the speeds I am getting are consistent with there network. FYI my status tells me that my Mobile Network Type is HSPAP:15
Attached is a screenshot of my typical speeds. Am I getting ripped off on data speeds?

Could it be that half of Bloomington is covered but the other half isn't, and you're in the bad half?
I would call customer service and politely ask to speak to tech support. Let them know your issue and ask to speak to a supervisor. When the supervisor gets on the phone tell them you want this to keep getting escalated until you get an answer.
I had a similar problem and it took two weeks to finally get anywhere.

I have though the same thing, but Bloomington is a pretty small city and I have driven all over town doing speed test in the past. Plus, when I have called them, I am told that there is no 4G anywhere close to me. Does that make sense if my network type is HSPAP:15?
Your speeds are up to par with what I get. Hell they're better. I would say everything is normal. T-Mobile has very weird and spotty service. I'm hoping the reframing of the towers will help.

Your problem was completely different. You had towers down in your area.
OP, you need to realize that every single phone you listed aside from the One S and S3 are NOT capable of HSPA+42. So that is your first problem. The second problem is that wherever you are in Bloomington, an HSPA+42 tower does not reach you. Coverage isn't always the best. I'm a five minute walk from Wrigley Field and a five minute drive to downtown Chicago and I only get 7-8mbps. I drive fifteen minutes west to where I went to high school, and I get speeds of 20-22mbps.
Third, HSPA+42 speeds are THEORETICAL. You can THEORETICALLY have speeds that fast. You aren't guaranteed to.
Also, HSPA+42 is still 3G.
Sent from my SGH-T999
It looks like you encountered massive traffic or the backhaul is not upgraded.
I had the same problem. I kept upgrading phones, buying them full price so I didn't have to renew my contract but I just kept switching my old SIM card into my new phones. When I switched to the Sensation I called T-Mobile about my slow speeds and they told me I had to upgrade to a "4G SIM card" and that worked. I would say that could be your problem but being that you now have the S3 and it has the micro SIM card then maybe they didn't upgrade your area yet.
That sucks dude...I'm out in Orlando, FL and I usually get about 10-15mbps almost anywhere...
At home I get +15mbps every time...
I attached a photo with the difference of my WiFi at home and my HSPA+42 at home. These were after a ROM change so I only have 5.

Do you notice the same speeds on other speed tests or super sluggish browsing?
It's possible to imagine that the nearest and even lowest pingable server is simple not responsive to your (up/down)link. I usually compare to freespeedtest.com and even grab files from local servers.
Also you server's routing table could be weird.
If not, I'm inclined to believe that it is an overhead problem.
Go to the phone dialer (on stock) and try doing
*#197328640#*
1:UMTS
1ebug Screen
1:Basic Information
And check the bottom item lines. You should see some connection information about your service. Can you list what you have?
Also, jic check the Band at the top and make sure it says 4. Possibly could be defaulting to 1900 experimental.

have you tested the speed in another location? example if that test was done at home, do one at work/school and compare
if it is just as slow you can try flashing a different radio..
i have generally been getting about 3-10 mbps depending on where i am/time of test...faster speeds as it gets later (network traffic slows down quite a bit at night around 10pm-midnight)
Somethings not right there. Did you just activate the service? Sometimes it can take a couple days for everything to get squared away on T-Mobile's end.
Also, have you double checked your APN settings to make sure everything is in order?
I'd also try some reboots and airplane cycles to make sure its connecting. Although it looks like you've got full HSPA+ connectivity. It could also just be a fluke with the tower you're on or the speedtest server you're testing on.

I'm not bootloader unlocked or even rooted for that matter. When I do I will play around with radios. I even tried googling a way to force 3g instead of HSPA+ to make sure it wasn't the tower. No luck yet. I did a speed test at my home and it was the same. The speed test I posted was at work.

APNs seem right from what I can remember.
I think you either have a SIM problem, a tower problem, or data hasn't been activated properly on your account. I'd give it another full day (T-Mo can be slow to activate fully), and if its not working, call and tell them your phone's data speed is extremely slow. They can try to reset it on their end (or send new SIM) or check for a tower issue.
Did you get the 200MB plan and use it all up? Because they throttle you when you use it all up. Them look like throttled speeds to me.
Or maybe, they are throttling you by mistake...
Also, have you restarted your phone?
Power it off for a bit. Pull the battery... then start it back up. I've seen that fix MANY things, and it's easy.

I have opened a ticked with T-Mobile thinking it may be the tower(s) in my town. Haven't heard back yet but I want to keep this updated. If it doesn't work out I will probably end up going with an at&t mnvo

I've tried more radios than I can count. So I ordered an st att sim and got it activated today. There is a huuuge difference from .05 tmo to 3.5 att st so I guess even if coverage is good and they say its fine there are some places where the actual back haul of the network is seriously lacking. If it still doesn't work for you go ahead and try a different provider. Made a world of difference for me.

Been thinking of leaving Verizon for T-mobile,how is the coverage.
customer service etc.
Verizons network is 99% lte even if it is slow lte since it was one of the first carriers to have it, days of pulling 60mbps are gone. TMO i prefer because it is less congested so you will pull faster speeds in lte zones and get lower ping. I had a bf who uses tmobiles lte as his home wifi and latency was no issue in mmos whereas in same spot with verizon where I pulled 60/20 with a htc thunderbolt two years ago.... i get 12/4.
Switching also gets you access to free international data & apps like spotify dont use your plan and all plans are unlimited data its just 4G speed caps... 0 overages ever. Magenta plans on converting entire 3g market into lte by end of year I heard so its a solid move. I would do it honestly I have both right now due to parents making me stay on it and tmobile has vastly improved on a monthly basis almost here. If you had asked this two years ago ide of said stay on big red but its not the case anymore.

Reason i asked was Facebook was magically eating data to the tune of 3 gb plus ate all my verizon data.
unless you travel check you coverage or just try tmobile for 7 days check out the program
you be out of contract
If you have T-Mobile coverage where you live then go for it. Do you have any friends with T-Mobile? If so, ask them to come over and see how the network is. I left VZW for T-Mobile but where I live I have great coverage for both companies.

service and customer service is top ship. I've been with TMO for 12 yrs or so. Depends on the area you are in .. With that you will have to do the research. Customer svc is great with them. I switched to VZ because i moved to an area where tmo had 1 tower and i could not get a signal at work. I've since switched back and found that the lack in coverage, is great compared to the price difference. I'm paying for 5 phones with TMO what i was paying with VZ. At home i'm on wifi. out in town i get 4g. I live just outside of a 4g area probably 2 miles, so when i'm out and about I get great coverage, when i'm at home, i'm on wifi. My TMO 4g speeds are way better then my wifi at the moment with WOW but i'll wait for them to finish their upgrades as TMO just started expanding the network to rural areas outside of urban cities. For me is was price over performance and VZ completely screwed me over with the launch of the G2 that had flaws, they knew about it, and would not let me trade the phone in. Sorry, but telling me wait a month for the update to use my phone was not acceptable. I'm now willingly using my wifi instead of 4g.
