Having 3g speed problem with your ET4G? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I live in the bay area so that's great news

we know the upgrade plans, but how long will it take for your area is the question.
If it's this bad half way through next year I'll be very unhappy.
Sent from my Galaxy S2 Epic 4g Touch.

I'm sure I'll reap the benefits of this (if it happens...) very quickly, as I live in one of the first areas to get anything from any carrier.
....and that also means I'll be able to get decent home internet speeds, finally(via tether).

Well hurry up and fix the Oxnard Ca sites, evenings and weekends my download speeds are less then 70kbps. From 3am to 9am during the week I can get 1.5 Mbps down.
Thank god for my ipad sim in a mifi.

I have a lot of data problems near my work... which is why I am switching to .0001 PRL for now. I can't live off 1bar and 10kbps downloads while at work....

How do I do this? Also what is the difference in speed? I'm getting like 40 something k during some parts of the day and it's very frustrating.

You should be able to get over 1mbps if Verizon has 3G in your area

Thanks. Where don't they have 3g network? lol.

Anybody ever do any side by side speed tests with other devices? I ran a test with three E4GTs, an EVO 4G and an EVO 3D. Both EVO's cleared over a meg d/l while all three E4GTs (including mine) barely broke 200 kb/s. Sprint needs to get their network up to snuff no doubt but I think there is also something going on with the hardware/firmware of our phones too. I spent an hour on the phone with Sprint and Samsung today about it (of course they weren't able to help and played dumb).

For a while I was pulling my hair out, and updating prls, having Sprint reset my account and reprovisioning my phones.
E4GT, Optima S, Evo 4G and hacked Droid Incredible all scored the same pathetic sub 100Kbs in my area. I ran again at 5am and all of them managed above 1Mbps. Just over loaded towers in my area. Its worse since the Iphone.

I guess Anaheim Hills, CA is unaffected. My speeds have been great.

The Evo3d received a network service update a couple days ago and a lot of people who received it said they are getting better 3g speeds all of a sudden. Just check the second link I posted up on this thread. So comparing an Evo3d to anything might not be fair at the moment. All depending on your area that is. I received a network service update on my girl's Evo3d and it still gets the same 3g speeds as my ET4g. Just average speeds in my area. Here's the link explaining network changes in the Bay area.

Maybe they gave in and just gave it the ENG radio. When I had my E3D and I flashed the leaked eng radio (I forget the version number) my speeds were anywhere from 30-60% faster. It might have affected battery life, but, who knows...battery life sucked on that thing regardless.
I always found it strange that every radio update just seemed to make it go slower and slower...I think Sprint was up to something...

[Q] Just upgraded from a Nexus One but data speeds are almost the same

I picked up a brand new G2 off craigslist and I've rooted it already. Phone is awesome. I can finally stream my Amazon Video On Demand collection without a hitch. I'm not noticing too much of a difference when I run speedtest.net though.
Do I have to change my data plan with T-Mobile? I live and work in LA so maybe the network is just jammed.
no speeds in LA just suck that bad. ive driven around all LA and never been able to get those hspa+ speeds, im thinking LA isnt enabled yet. but call tmobile and complain because when i called and said i wasnt the only when experiencing that they said it could be the phone.. my friend has a g2 also, and i dont think shes getting the speeds either. so make sure you call!! hopefullly either theyll tell us the truth or send some patch or something idk
I also live in LA, (commute between Long Beach and El Segundo) and I don't get the advertised data speeds... just the regular ole 3G speeds here.
In my area, I've actually seen not a boost in speed but a boost in reception quality moving from my N1 (which I still love ever so much, and might just sell my G2 for ). I stay on 3G/HSPDA in more areas than I used to. And I drop down to 2g less often during tower switches.
it all depends on location, for example, I live in a suburb of Chicago where the new network is supposed to be already up at, (about 5 miles away) and I get horrible speeds in my home (0.90 MBits) then about 20 miles in the other direction from Chicago (Aurora) speedtest said i was estimated at less than 5 miles from the aurora server in IL. I got speeds of nearly 9 MBits. I would complain but after some testing I guess it's just my location and could be the same problem for you, or I could just be high and we all have shoddy phones.
+1 for location. I'm in NYC so even with HSDPA enabled, I get 3G like speeds, a little faster, but when I go out to the suburbs, I get about 5Mbps which is quick, wifi like speeds.

Very true. At home I get 6Mbps pretty consistently, and the speeds are just downright incredible! At work I get a measly 300-400Kbps because the tower that I'm near at work is still stuck on 3G, not to mention I have horrible coverage in general at work (signal drops all the time).
I have reception in walmart now lol

At home my speeds are usually between 4 and 6 megs down and 700k up. My wife has a Vibrant and she gets around 3 to 4 megs down. I think we just live I'm a good coverage area. In some places I'll drop down to 1mb down. That's still dsl like speeds lol.

How do you manage this? I have a G2 as well - coming from a rooted G1. I'm guessing you have to set the browser mode to "desktop browswer" and just sign in to Amazon VOD?
I don't really feel the need to root my phone, since it comes with wifi tether built in, but I really want to be able to stream Amazon VOD...

Sprint speeds are JOKES IN NYC????!?!

okay.. let me start off by saying... im confused... I mean VERY confused... i wasnt expecting 10-12Mbps i was expecting maybe 4-8Mbps. consistently....
now i did a speedtest.net run on 3g.. and im getting a stable 1Mbps.. (acceptable) although i was expecting more like 2.5Mbps... and i said lets test 4g... well i switched it on... and im barely... getting 2Mbps... i got 3Mbps.. one time.. but never over that... im paying 70 bucks a month plus tax for this?????? you gotta be kidding me..
im hoping its just maybe sprints towers are down... so could anyone from NYC (im in queens ny) tell me what speeds they are getting via 3g and 4g speedtest?
You are lucky to be getting those speeds. I'm in Maplewood, NJ and I get around 200-250kbps on 3g and 1.4mbps on 4g.

Don't use speed test apps...
Use this...
http://speakeasy.net/speedtest
I've tested many different methods against realworld downloads. Speakeasy tests WiMAX better than others, especially speedtest apps.
yeah, a lot has to do with the server.
I like the speedtest.net server in washington DC... seems to be pretty consistent.
I think if you were expecting 2.5mbit over 3G, your expectations were a little off. 1MB is pretty average for EVDO (verizon EVDO speeds tend to hoover around that as well).
As for wimax speeds, they differ GREATLY depending on the area. Clearwire really didn't do the best job deploying the network (they were in a hurry and had limited funds).
I would wait for sprint to "correct" the wimax via network vision over the next ~6 months. You will also see 3G speeds increase in the next ~6 months as well.
I will post my results once my screen protector dries tomorrow! But on my Touch Pro2 I got anwwhere from 500kb-2MB with Sprint's 3G. I can't remember what my Photon tested at. Will report E4GT results soon for Kew Gardens and 10023.

i'm in Kew gardens queens and i get above 7 at any time of day. when i moved there in april i used 4g tether my computers and t.v's with no drop off.
In queens ny sprint 3g speed is normally btw 400-1.4, most the time it ill be around 700kbps. 4g speed is btw 3-7mbps. this speed is consistent with og epic throughout the pass year.
NYC
I work in midtown across the street from Penn Station... When I first got my EVO this time last year, i was getting between 8-10 MB down while tethered using Speedtest.Net. I downloaded the App and would show people at work the speeds i was getting...
Now when I run speedtest, i'm lucky if i break 2MB down. I tried the speedtest app and speakeasy.net, and the results are always very close and rarely over 2MB down. I don't know if it's increased traffic over the last year, but speeds have absolutely been tanking over the past year...
between 8 and 12 mbps in sacramento!
3g sucks though, get like .5
I live in queens (bayside) and inside my house I get 5-7 mbps and right outside I get 9-11mbps. Near work and school (midtown/grammercy) I get the same speeds. 3g speeds suck for me though.
Inside my house with 1 bar of 4g

I too came from a Touch Pro 2 => Photon => SGS2. I live in Manhattan.
I get around 100-250kbps on 3G on my SGS2, around 3Mbps on WiMax.
I was appalled because i remember getting 1-2Mbps on my old Touch Pro 2. So I actually fired up my Touch Pro 2, which is still active on another line, and now it too only get 100-250kbps on 3G.
Sprint's network has just gotten crazy overloaded these days in New York. Things are going to get real ugly with all new iPhones coming online soon.
I would expect congestion today since all these apple fanatics are probably activating their new iPhone 4s.

4G Service Sucks....

Mine barely ever connects and then when it does, its like it doesn't know because no pages will load(connection error). Got my azz handed to me by Bionic yesterday. My coworker and I were out for happy hour and did a little speed test on 4g...yep he definitely got me.
I need some WIMAX tweaks immediately!!! LOL..but not really LOLing. Im serious
Verizon's network is better. (fact)
Sprint's phones are better. (fact, with minor opinion)
It's a hard choice, but Sprint's network is fantastic in Florida, so I can't really complain.

My 4g inside my house on first floor also sucks but verizon 4g also sucked at my house. In fact verizon dropped occasional calls and I needed to get a network extender. Sprint's network will get better but will probably need lte phone in the future to take advantage of it.
Try the wimax tweaks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265990&page=6
Basically lets wimax latch on to a weaker signal
im pretty sure its dependant on area. I have no issues with 3g. I get usually between 700kbps-1.3mbps. on 4g i usually get between 7-12mbps. Not too shabbby for a guy like me

Feel free to leave any carrier whose network is not performing to your standards.
I haven't even had the chance to experience 4G yet here in my area (not available yet). Still having to pay the $10 a month "premium"data fee though.
That's what truly sucks!

Yes, it sucks but the $10 premium is even for smartphones that do not have 4G.
Sprints 3g speeds have been pretty bad. Anyone I meet on other carriers have like 3mbps while mine has like 1mbps. One bar of 4g signal and I am at 3mbps, two or three bars and I am at 6mbps or more.
Sprint 4g works pretty well for me up and down the east coast anyway in major cities. I travel a lot and spend a lot of time in airports and hotels near airports. The only place I find Sprint to kind of suck is oddly New York.
I had T-mobile which worked most places but their service sucked for speed especially at my home, solid bars but only .4 Mbps with whereas I get 1 Mbps 3g and 8 Mbps 4G with Sprint. Almost as fast as my Comcast cable internet.
Anyway YMMV. Probably VZW is the "best" but their data plans suck with 2Gb limit and they're expensive as hell with poor customer service. Instead of complaining how about doing a little research, ask friends, and take advantage of the trial period and figuring out which works best for you in your area.

Anyone else notice a much worse signal on the GNex than other VZW phones in the same location. I swapped from a GSM Gnex and i gotta say, im not impressed.

I am. Compared to the Rezound I had for a couple weeks the dBm is -100 to -140 where the Rezound was -80.
Last night it kept dropping to 3G and would not get 4G back unless I rebooted.
Speedtest was about half what it normally was with the Rezound on 4G
This morning the -dBm is over -100 but the speedtest is about to where it was normally so I don't know.
I travel for work so I'm going to give it week and see how to behaves as I move around.
I really like this phone but I need it to be a phone first and if it drops calls or the 4G is this bad it's going to be a deal breaker.
I just did another speed test at -108 dBm and it's over 20MB down. I was getting 4MB down last night and the signal was all ranging all over the place while I was staying in the same spot.
I have to imagine the VZW network was getting pounded pretty hard last night with new adopters and phones being activated. I'd say give it a few days and check back into it

I drop signal at random though.
Would that cause it to drop down to 3G?
I have same signal i used to have on my rezound, i still get almost same speeds around 28 up and 18-20 down here in Minneapolis. rezound used to get 32 down and around 20 up, but i am thinking since verizon network was pounded yesterday so there will be some impact on speeds
Whatever new phone that comes out, you can always count on a bad signal thread.
I haven't noticed a difference in signal, but I do think it has better sound quality than my Droid Incredible.
Edit: I just did a speed test (3g) and it was very choppy and not great. I live across the street from a cell tower, so that is not good.

Maybe your coverage area? I am in Tampa...in a building, in my office, i get 5-6 megs down and 2-3 up...with my LTE GNex, i cant even hold a 4g signal, and when i do its 5 megs each way. Nothing earth shattering....but on top of it, that drops to 3g and stays there. The GSM, always had a connection.

T-mobile lied to me

I have been with T-Mobile in Bloomington, IL for over 7 years now. The only thing I have ever complained about is data speeds in my area. So, when I read the following press release from T-Mobile last year, I was super excited.
http://newsroom.t-mobile.com/articles/new-4g-markets-nov2011
In that release dated Nov 16th 2011, it says
"T-Mobile 4G markets where HPSA+ 42 service is launching today:
Bend, Medford and Corvallis, Ore.; Benton Harbor, Mich.; Bloomington, Champaign–Urbana and Springfield, Ill.; Columbus, Ga.; Hagerstown, Md.; Montgomery, Ala; Yuba City, Calif."
So, I have not seen a difference in speeds at all over the past year with the following phones, HTC Senseation, Galaxy Nexus GSM, HTC One S and the Galaxy S3.
I have never gotten anything above 3Mb anywhere in town. Now, when I call T-Mobile to inquire about my slow speeds, they tell me only 3G is offered in my area and that the speeds I am getting are consistent with there network. FYI my status tells me that my Mobile Network Type is HSPAP:15
Attached is a screenshot of my typical speeds. Am I getting ripped off on data speeds?

I would call customer service and politely ask to speak to tech support. Let them know your issue and ask to speak to a supervisor. When the supervisor gets on the phone tell them you want this to keep getting escalated until you get an answer.
I had a similar problem and it took two weeks to finally get anywhere.

I have though the same thing, but Bloomington is a pretty small city and I have driven all over town doing speed test in the past. Plus, when I have called them, I am told that there is no 4G anywhere close to me. Does that make sense if my network type is HSPAP:15?
Your speeds are up to par with what I get. Hell they're better. I would say everything is normal. T-Mobile has very weird and spotty service. I'm hoping the reframing of the towers will help.

Honestly you shouldnt be seeing much of a difference from people downloading at 10 Mbps... you're still downloading at 100 KB/s with 1 Mbps....

Your problem was completely different. You had towers down in your area.
OP, you need to realize that every single phone you listed aside from the One S and S3 are NOT capable of HSPA+42. So that is your first problem. The second problem is that wherever you are in Bloomington, an HSPA+42 tower does not reach you. Coverage isn't always the best. I'm a five minute walk from Wrigley Field and a five minute drive to downtown Chicago and I only get 7-8mbps. I drive fifteen minutes west to where I went to high school, and I get speeds of 20-22mbps.
Third, HSPA+42 speeds are THEORETICAL. You can THEORETICALLY have speeds that fast. You aren't guaranteed to.
Also, HSPA+42 is still 3G.

It looks like you encountered massive traffic or the backhaul is not upgraded.
I had the same problem. I kept upgrading phones, buying them full price so I didn't have to renew my contract but I just kept switching my old SIM card into my new phones. When I switched to the Sensation I called T-Mobile about my slow speeds and they told me I had to upgrade to a "4G SIM card" and that worked. I would say that could be your problem but being that you now have the S3 and it has the micro SIM card then maybe they didn't upgrade your area yet.
That sucks dude...I'm out in Orlando, FL and I usually get about 10-15mbps almost anywhere...
At home I get +15mbps every time...
I attached a photo with the difference of my WiFi at home and my HSPA+42 at home. These were after a ROM change so I only have 5.

Do you notice the same speeds on other speed tests or super sluggish browsing?
It's possible to imagine that the nearest and even lowest pingable server is simple not responsive to your (up/down)link. I usually compare to freespeedtest.com and even grab files from local servers.
Also you server's routing table could be weird.
If not, I'm inclined to believe that it is an overhead problem.
Go to the phone dialer (on stock) and try doing
*#197328640#*
1:UMTS
1ebug Screen
1:Basic Information
And check the bottom item lines. You should see some connection information about your service. Can you list what you have?
Also, jic check the Band at the top and make sure it says 4. Possibly could be defaulting to 1900 experimental.
