[Q] Just upgraded from a Nexus One but data speeds are almost the same - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I picked up a brand new G2 off craigslist and I've rooted it already. Phone is awesome. I can finally stream my Amazon Video On Demand collection without a hitch. I'm not noticing too much of a difference when I run speedtest.net though.
Do I have to change my data plan with T-Mobile? I live and work in LA so maybe the network is just jammed.

no speeds in LA just suck that bad. ive driven around all LA and never been able to get those hspa+ speeds, im thinking LA isnt enabled yet. but call tmobile and complain because when i called and said i wasnt the only when experiencing that they said it could be the phone.. my friend has a g2 also, and i dont think shes getting the speeds either. so make sure you call!! hopefullly either theyll tell us the truth or send some patch or something idk

I also live in LA, (commute between Long Beach and El Segundo) and I don't get the advertised data speeds... just the regular ole 3G speeds here.

In my area, I've actually seen not a boost in speed but a boost in reception quality moving from my N1 (which I still love ever so much, and might just sell my G2 for ). I stay on 3G/HSPDA in more areas than I used to. And I drop down to 2g less often during tower switches.

it all depends on location, for example, I live in a suburb of Chicago where the new network is supposed to be already up at, (about 5 miles away) and I get horrible speeds in my home (0.90 MBits) then about 20 miles in the other direction from Chicago (Aurora) speedtest said i was estimated at less than 5 miles from the aurora server in IL. I got speeds of nearly 9 MBits. I would complain but after some testing I guess it's just my location and could be the same problem for you, or I could just be high and we all have shoddy phones.

+1 for location. I'm in NYC so even with HSDPA enabled, I get 3G like speeds, a little faster, but when I go out to the suburbs, I get about 5Mbps which is quick, wifi like speeds.

A faster phone isn't going to give you faster data speeds if the network is the bottleneck.

Very true. At home I get 6Mbps pretty consistently, and the speeds are just downright incredible! At work I get a measly 300-400Kbps because the tower that I'm near at work is still stuck on 3G, not to mention I have horrible coverage in general at work (signal drops all the time).

I have reception in walmart now lol

At home my speeds are usually between 4 and 6 megs down and 700k up. My wife has a Vibrant and she gets around 3 to 4 megs down. I think we just live I'm a good coverage area. In some places I'll drop down to 1mb down. That's still dsl like speeds lol.
I live in kansas city.

How do you manage this? I have a G2 as well - coming from a rooted G1. I'm guessing you have to set the browser mode to "desktop browswer" and just sign in to Amazon VOD?
I don't really feel the need to root my phone, since it comes with wifi tether built in, but I really want to be able to stream Amazon VOD...

Vodafone HSDPA - does it exist?

I've just cancelled my Desire/TMobile contract under Distance Selling Regs due to lack of 3G coverage in my area. Occasionally I would find a pocket of superfast 2Mbps HSDPA coverage, but mostly it was crap 2G.
I still have my Vodafone contract running so I'm thinking of staying with them and upgrading (although they're more expensive than TMob).
I've done a few speedtests, and I never get more than 0.47Mps on a 3G signal, although this is available nearly everywhere. Never seen an H.
Can anyone tell me if Vodafone provides the faster H connection anywhere, and whether I'm ever likely to see it in Suffolk?

Run the speedtest app, tell it you want to email the result (I picked via GMail, doubt it matters). In the email is a link to a .png file, which is the pic you're after.

i agree with you, that score took me bout 5 attempts. others were on average about 2-3 mb/s. and was surprised it pulled out that speed. but just goes to show your not far off the mark because when i ran the test it said 100 miles to London, and the png came out as 50 miles. maybe there's some technicality i am missing somewhere on why that happens, but it did so i have to admit i really font know why.
Hmmm. I was using Mordax Speedtest and got 589kbps, then installed and ran Speedtest.net and got 2101kbps!
The Mordax one doesn't run as long as the Speedtest, but even still - such a wide disparity! I don't know which I trust, if either!
EDIT: Xtremelabs speedtest gives me 1453kbps
Different speed tests will use different servers, that's why you get variable results.

My 4g inside my house on first floor also sucks but verizon 4g also sucked at my house. In fact verizon dropped occasional calls and I needed to get a network extender. Sprint's network will get better but will probably need lte phone in the future to take advantage of it.
Try the wimax tweaks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265990&page=6

Feel free to leave any carrier whose network is not performing to your standards.
I haven't even had the chance to experience 4G yet here in my area (not available yet). Still having to pay the $10 a month "premium"data fee though.
That's what truly sucks!

Yes, it sucks but the $10 premium is even for smartphones that do not have 4G.
Sprints 3g speeds have been pretty bad. Anyone I meet on other carriers have like 3mbps while mine has like 1mbps. One bar of 4g signal and I am at 3mbps, two or three bars and I am at 6mbps or more.
Sprint 4g works pretty well for me up and down the east coast anyway in major cities. I travel a lot and spend a lot of time in airports and hotels near airports. The only place I find Sprint to kind of suck is oddly New York.
I had T-mobile which worked most places but their service sucked for speed especially at my home, solid bars but only .4 Mbps with whereas I get 1 Mbps 3g and 8 Mbps 4G with Sprint. Almost as fast as my Comcast cable internet.
Anyway YMMV. Probably VZW is the "best" but their data plans suck with 2Gb limit and they're expensive as hell with poor customer service. Instead of complaining how about doing a little research, ask friends, and take advantage of the trial period and figuring out which works best for you in your area.

You should be able to get over 1mbps if Verizon has 3G in your area
Thanks. Where don't they have 3g network? lol.
Anybody ever do any side by side speed tests with other devices? I ran a test with three E4GTs, an EVO 4G and an EVO 3D. Both EVO's cleared over a meg d/l while all three E4GTs (including mine) barely broke 200 kb/s. Sprint needs to get their network up to snuff no doubt but I think there is also something going on with the hardware/firmware of our phones too. I spent an hour on the phone with Sprint and Samsung today about it (of course they weren't able to help and played dumb).
For a while I was pulling my hair out, and updating prls, having Sprint reset my account and reprovisioning my phones.
E4GT, Optima S, Evo 4G and hacked Droid Incredible all scored the same pathetic sub 100Kbs in my area. I ran again at 5am and all of them managed above 1Mbps. Just over loaded towers in my area. Its worse since the Iphone.
I guess Anaheim Hills, CA is unaffected. My speeds have been great.
The Evo3d received a network service update a couple days ago and a lot of people who received it said they are getting better 3g speeds all of a sudden. Just check the second link I posted up on this thread. So comparing an Evo3d to anything might not be fair at the moment. All depending on your area that is. I received a network service update on my girl's Evo3d and it still gets the same 3g speeds as my ET4g. Just average speeds in my area. Here's the link explaining network changes in the Bay area.

Maybe they gave in and just gave it the ENG radio. When I had my E3D and I flashed the leaked eng radio (I forget the version number) my speeds were anywhere from 30-60% faster. It might have affected battery life, but, who knows...battery life sucked on that thing regardless.
I always found it strange that every radio update just seemed to make it go slower and slower...I think Sprint was up to something...

Wow that's not good. About how fast when you do get 4g and how slow is edge?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
I've never actually speed tested, but 4g is fast enough to surf and email to your liking, while with edge your loading a page, sitting down able to look around a bit and then its finish loading. So yes, I dread whenever I get edge. However, I have no idea how fast Sprint speeds are.
San Francisco has one of the worst reception areas for almost all carriers. Data connection always drops too in my past experience and I use to frequent SF a lot. AT&T was by far the worst in the bay area. back with G2, I was maybe getting 5mbps around L.A. but SF was about 2mbps. upload 1mbps in both region. Tmobile have horrible upload speed but, in my experience, best download speed.
For a cellphone, I don't need upload speed much so I'm happy with the faster DL speed. too much ping to game and stuff with it.

Sprint 3g right now is about the same. I wait a little bit and then the page will start to slowly show bits and pieces and then its done. With wimax on my evolution 3d pages loads instantly. 3g right now is averaging .4mbps. Earlier at a friends house in south San Jose I was getting .2mbps. I was trying to download 1.2mb app and it took about a minute. So if I were to dl a larger file I'd be in trouble.

WWell I just switched and now I'm kinda regretting it. On my way home I was testing my speed and was getting about 7-11mbps using speedtest app so I was really excited....til i got home. In my home in San Jose I can barely get a signal and I'm constantly going on Edge. I live in a 2 story home with regular drywall walls. Edge for me is way worse as I'm only getting .02 - .04 mbps and web browsing is non existent. If I open up maps, I get gps lock but the map is just grid and it stays like that for a long time. Eventually map will show up but once I zoom out I get grids again. Texting takes forever to send. Phone calls will sometimes cut in and out. Majority of the time I get 1 bar and sometimes zero. Even at 3 bars edge is awful. My bed is by the window so I guess the area were I live just sucks. I may just have to go back to my evo 3d which I was getting good wimax and phone signal.

WiFi Calling is your friend.

Question 5G data speeds are terrible, why?

Testing results in garbage speed (consistently less than 7 Mbps down, less than 1 Mbps up, 20-25 ms ping, 6-8 ms jitter). Signal strength is apparently 38% (-111 dBm). I noticed it was bad sometimes when I was actually out and not at home on my WiFi, but I had to use my hotspot for a few hours since they were doing maintenance on the internet here at home, and it was just terrible. So now I have to ask.... what could be making it so slow? Is it just me, or are others suffering from terrible speed as well? Is it my modem? The area I'm in (Sacramento, CA)? Or is it actually on T-Mobile's end?
Just ran a few Speedtest app 5g tests in Southern Nevada...

I'm on EU firmware with T-Mobile network in Texas, and speeds are kinda all over but consistently fast. Odd that it used LTE for most of my tests instead of 5G though.
I'm not sure if it's always just been "bleh" speeds for 5G here or not, but seeing as how this is the first 5G device I've owned, it's hard to say if it's on my end or theirs.
Nope, must be something on my end. Their map says my area has "5G Ultra Capacity" so that can't be the issue.

Might just be your testing locations. 5g actually performs poorly in home environment for me, about the same as lte for speed but less reliable. I'd check open network maps to determine if you're actually close to a 5g cell tower (not relying on carrier provided maps that tend to skew positively for them), and if so, check if you get better signal outside. If you are close to a tower, get decent speeds outside, but not inside, then getting a signal booster for faster mobile speeds indoor would be needed.
It is definitely testing location. When I test at home, the speed is slower than 4g by a lot. When I test at work in NYC I have mind blowing speeds. Faster than my IPS at home.
Here is a screenshot of my 5g in NYC

Are they consistently like that? The results I mentioned above were at home. But I tested again yesterday while I was out, at a grocery store just down the street a few blocks, and I got 19.9 up/ 3.98 down (which is better, but still pretty sad).

I wouldn't be able to tell you honestly because I do not live in NYC. I commute there for work. I have one ran speed test there 2 times and both times I had blazing fast speed like that. Over at my house, the 5g is poor and I only use 4g.
@GuyInDogSuit I've been having the same issues lately. Not sure what's been going on. T-Mobile OP9P converted to DA firmware, using Family Mobile SIM connected using T-Mobile APN.
Was surprised to get these results today. Went to download an app update using mobile data, realized it downloaded in two seconds, so I figured I'd speed test it. I live in ****ty Ohio lol.

Holy mackerel!!
Anyway, to update on this.... It would seem it is definitely something in the area, and not just the 5G. I tested the LTE on my tablet and got piss-poor results on that as well. 9.89 down, 0.07 up. Yikes.
They're fine here
I was all over the place today, in at least two different counties, and tested several times. The speeds weren't spectacular, but they were still much better than the sadness I get at home. I should look into some ways to improve that, especially since it will be my only source of internet for a few days next week.
