Vodafone HSDPA - does it exist? - Desire General

I've just cancelled my Desire/TMobile contract under Distance Selling Regs due to lack of 3G coverage in my area. Occasionally I would find a pocket of superfast 2Mbps HSDPA coverage, but mostly it was crap 2G.
I still have my Vodafone contract running so I'm thinking of staying with them and upgrading (although they're more expensive than TMob).
I've done a few speedtests, and I never get more than 0.47Mps on a 3G signal, although this is available nearly everywhere. Never seen an H.
Can anyone tell me if Vodafone provides the faster H connection anywhere, and whether I'm ever likely to see it in Suffolk?

How did you get the screenshot?

Run the speedtest app, tell it you want to email the result (I picked via GMail, doubt it matters). In the email is a link to a .png file, which is the pic you're after.

Cheers mate I really should learn to press the menu key when I can't find something!

i agree with you, that score took me bout 5 attempts. others were on average about 2-3 mb/s. and was surprised it pulled out that speed. but just goes to show your not far off the mark because when i ran the test it said 100 miles to London, and the png came out as 50 miles. maybe there's some technicality i am missing somewhere on why that happens, but it did so i have to admit i really font know why.

Hmmm. I was using Mordax Speedtest and got 589kbps, then installed and ran Speedtest.net and got 2101kbps!
The Mordax one doesn't run as long as the Speedtest, but even still - such a wide disparity! I don't know which I trust, if either!
EDIT: Xtremelabs speedtest gives me 1453kbps

Different speed tests will use different servers, that's why you get variable results.

This was quite early in the morning, but after repeated tests today it seems I always get around 4Mb/s

[Q] Just upgraded from a Nexus One but data speeds are almost the same

I picked up a brand new G2 off craigslist and I've rooted it already. Phone is awesome. I can finally stream my Amazon Video On Demand collection without a hitch. I'm not noticing too much of a difference when I run speedtest.net though.
Do I have to change my data plan with T-Mobile? I live and work in LA so maybe the network is just jammed.
no speeds in LA just suck that bad. ive driven around all LA and never been able to get those hspa+ speeds, im thinking LA isnt enabled yet. but call tmobile and complain because when i called and said i wasnt the only when experiencing that they said it could be the phone.. my friend has a g2 also, and i dont think shes getting the speeds either. so make sure you call!! hopefullly either theyll tell us the truth or send some patch or something idk
I also live in LA, (commute between Long Beach and El Segundo) and I don't get the advertised data speeds... just the regular ole 3G speeds here.
In my area, I've actually seen not a boost in speed but a boost in reception quality moving from my N1 (which I still love ever so much, and might just sell my G2 for ). I stay on 3G/HSPDA in more areas than I used to. And I drop down to 2g less often during tower switches.
it all depends on location, for example, I live in a suburb of Chicago where the new network is supposed to be already up at, (about 5 miles away) and I get horrible speeds in my home (0.90 MBits) then about 20 miles in the other direction from Chicago (Aurora) speedtest said i was estimated at less than 5 miles from the aurora server in IL. I got speeds of nearly 9 MBits. I would complain but after some testing I guess it's just my location and could be the same problem for you, or I could just be high and we all have shoddy phones.
+1 for location. I'm in NYC so even with HSDPA enabled, I get 3G like speeds, a little faster, but when I go out to the suburbs, I get about 5Mbps which is quick, wifi like speeds.

Very true. At home I get 6Mbps pretty consistently, and the speeds are just downright incredible! At work I get a measly 300-400Kbps because the tower that I'm near at work is still stuck on 3G, not to mention I have horrible coverage in general at work (signal drops all the time).
I have reception in walmart now lol

At home my speeds are usually between 4 and 6 megs down and 700k up. My wife has a Vibrant and she gets around 3 to 4 megs down. I think we just live I'm a good coverage area. In some places I'll drop down to 1mb down. That's still dsl like speeds lol.

For me it depends on where I am at. They recently repaired the tower closest to my work so I have been averaging around 2 Mbs up at work. At home I average around 150 Kbs up, almost unusable.

I'm lucky to get 500kbps down and 100kbps up on Sprint, most times its 2-3 know, that's why I run a Verizon prl. I don't know how they get away with calling those speeds 3g when any other provider in town gets at least 1mb down.
sent from my locked EVO via tapatalk
IT ALL DEPENDS ON TOWER TOWER TOWER! It is limited BY THAT ONE TOWER! it has nothing to do with city *unless the city like has NO fiber or something* If there is good fiber in the city, and depending on the area/tower you're on. you can get 2+M down and 1M up.. I get this on a normal basis. because my city has fiber. lol! But They REALLY need a better 4G network here. on an average, I get 6-8M down and 1.5up on 4G. BUT GUESS WHAT! EVEN ON 4G, I HAVE SEEN IT GET LESS THAN 3G SPEEDS LIKE CHICAGO! All depends on area, amount of people, and technology in that area.
NOW I WISH I WOULD STOP SEEING THREADS LIKE THIS! omg! lmao. I find it funny that people are like, "omg i'm getting 400kbs" lol. are you even connected to a sprint tower? that's a SPRINT OWNED tower!
OH YEAH, FORGOT TO ADD. WHEN LOOKING AT RATE OF DOWNLOAD.. YOU MUST ALSO LOOK AT YOUR PING! TIME IT TAKES FOR YOUR PHONE TO TALK TO THE SERVER. PING HAS A DIRECT RATIO with how many bars you have and rate of the connection at that exact tower.
My town must have no fiber at all then because it doesn't matter what sprint tower I connect to within a 30 mile radius I get the speeds I posted earlier, early morning mid day middle of the night all the same. My ping times are fairly low usually below 500ms. So maybe you should help sprint out around here, because in the same locations I can use a Verizon prl and have a lower signal and higher ping and still pull 1-3mbs. I'm doubtful its towers I think its sub par equipment running the towers.
sent from my locked EVO via tapatalk
500 ms ISN'T LOW! wow! 50 is low. 500 isn't. goto a sprint store near you and check another android phone to make sure it isn't your phone or something. Then again, if you're not near a city. what you got is likely what you're going to get.
Well I'm in a city, and actually this EVO does better than the 4 epics I went thru. I was lucky with them to get 1000ms ping. Now I can say the areas I been in that have 4G are ok, but officially we aren't suppose to have it here yet. No place in Oklahoma does for that matter. Sprint is either having trouble with the majority of their towers here or something. Just about every other provider here like tmobile, ATT, cricket, and us cellular all have faster data, I'm not trying to say sprint is bad or throw them under a bus just stating how my experience has been. With going thru 4 epics all of which had the same slow data speeds, when they could actually get data, and now an EVO I don't see how I could get all of them to have the same slow speeds in various areas of town. Just my experiences.
Edit: just ran some speed tests and ping of the 4 I ran was 110-140ms, down average was around 600kbps upload was average 200kbps. That's all with a full (pegged) signal from a sprint tower.
who cares what this says anyways
Sprint just got done boosting towers in oklahoma. I stated the plan for sprints tower plan in another thread ( 3g issues) . Goodbye iden and now instead of many small cellsites . They are moving towers into one cell site and a frequency from 800 mhz to 2.5 ghz in one cell site
But i average 1.2 - 2.0 mbps in hotsprings arkansas
Miami.

You should be able to get over 1mbps if Verizon has 3G in your area
Thanks. Where don't they have 3g network? lol.
Anybody ever do any side by side speed tests with other devices? I ran a test with three E4GTs, an EVO 4G and an EVO 3D. Both EVO's cleared over a meg d/l while all three E4GTs (including mine) barely broke 200 kb/s. Sprint needs to get their network up to snuff no doubt but I think there is also something going on with the hardware/firmware of our phones too. I spent an hour on the phone with Sprint and Samsung today about it (of course they weren't able to help and played dumb).
For a while I was pulling my hair out, and updating prls, having Sprint reset my account and reprovisioning my phones.
E4GT, Optima S, Evo 4G and hacked Droid Incredible all scored the same pathetic sub 100Kbs in my area. I ran again at 5am and all of them managed above 1Mbps. Just over loaded towers in my area. Its worse since the Iphone.
I guess Anaheim Hills, CA is unaffected. My speeds have been great.
The Evo3d received a network service update a couple days ago and a lot of people who received it said they are getting better 3g speeds all of a sudden. Just check the second link I posted up on this thread. So comparing an Evo3d to anything might not be fair at the moment. All depending on your area that is. I received a network service update on my girl's Evo3d and it still gets the same 3g speeds as my ET4g. Just average speeds in my area. Here's the link explaining network changes in the Bay area.

Maybe they gave in and just gave it the ENG radio. When I had my E3D and I flashed the leaked eng radio (I forget the version number) my speeds were anywhere from 30-60% faster. It might have affected battery life, but, who knows...battery life sucked on that thing regardless.
I always found it strange that every radio update just seemed to make it go slower and slower...I think Sprint was up to something...

[Q]Wcdma?

Hey everyone, I recently got a new Android phone, Samsung galaxy s2x, it should have dual 4g capabilities. The speed isn't great compared to what others have been getting. I usually get around 3-4mbps, the Telus website says 7-14 should be attained...
My question is basically, in the wireless options, I can choose gsm, wcdma or both. Is wdcma considered hspa+ ?
I live in Montreal, where the Telus network should be fully developed. Highest speed I've got was 6mbps.
Anything wrong, or were my expectations too high when buying this phone?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Also, my girlfriend has an iPhone4 with Telus also, its often quicker than mine on the net...and its a 3g phone.

see this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306045
there are some from Montreal they are getting great speed
the thing is with cell phones, it depends highly in your location and tower
also in Canada do not believe anything that says 4G it's all fake
our infrastructure is poor compared to the USA, at best we can only get good 3G speed even when you see 4G
even the Rogers LTE are no where near as good they also top out around 15 Mbps at its best, while the USA or other counterparts they get like 30 Mbps on LTE
So i'm stuck with slow speeds lol?
I kinda regret going with Telus, they have terrible reception as well as slow speeds...

I think you are just not tech savy enough to use a cell like the S2X. Try doing a speed test in your browser and you will see that the speed test.net app is crap. I get 21 mbps downlink on telus in mtl using speedtest.net in dolphin HD (using app I get 3-10mbps). Stop blaming the carriers. People like you are just never happy but its your own fault! Maybe also if you would test your phone outside your basement it would help! Mtl reception is flawless, actually reception in QC in general is great.
I have tried all the different modems from the kj3, vk1 and even the Blaze LB7 and different roms and I still get miserable speed on my phone. I have many friends with different phones even 3G phones that are doing alot better. I am getting speeds of less than 300 k downlaod with with full bars.

I think some people had similar problems as you. I don't remember exactly but some workarounds are using the supercharger script and running those 3g scripts or whatever it's called.
Someone if i recall correctly couldn't get fast data at all, he opted for a warranty exchange and that fixed it for him.
If anything you could try making your own thread in the Q&A area and maybe those people who had similar problems can answer it for you. Obviously it's not because of your location because your friends' phones get fast speed in the same location

Question 5G data speeds are terrible, why?

Testing results in garbage speed (consistently less than 7 Mbps down, less than 1 Mbps up, 20-25 ms ping, 6-8 ms jitter). Signal strength is apparently 38% (-111 dBm). I noticed it was bad sometimes when I was actually out and not at home on my WiFi, but I had to use my hotspot for a few hours since they were doing maintenance on the internet here at home, and it was just terrible. So now I have to ask.... what could be making it so slow? Is it just me, or are others suffering from terrible speed as well? Is it my modem? The area I'm in (Sacramento, CA)? Or is it actually on T-Mobile's end?
Just ran a few Speedtest app 5g tests in Southern Nevada...

I'm on EU firmware with T-Mobile network in Texas, and speeds are kinda all over but consistently fast. Odd that it used LTE for most of my tests instead of 5G though.
I'm not sure if it's always just been "bleh" speeds for 5G here or not, but seeing as how this is the first 5G device I've owned, it's hard to say if it's on my end or theirs.
Nope, must be something on my end. Their map says my area has "5G Ultra Capacity" so that can't be the issue.

Might just be your testing locations. 5g actually performs poorly in home environment for me, about the same as lte for speed but less reliable. I'd check open network maps to determine if you're actually close to a 5g cell tower (not relying on carrier provided maps that tend to skew positively for them), and if so, check if you get better signal outside. If you are close to a tower, get decent speeds outside, but not inside, then getting a signal booster for faster mobile speeds indoor would be needed.
It is definitely testing location. When I test at home, the speed is slower than 4g by a lot. When I test at work in NYC I have mind blowing speeds. Faster than my IPS at home.

Are they consistently like that? The results I mentioned above were at home. But I tested again yesterday while I was out, at a grocery store just down the street a few blocks, and I got 19.9 up/ 3.98 down (which is better, but still pretty sad).

I wouldn't be able to tell you honestly because I do not live in NYC. I commute there for work. I have one ran speed test there 2 times and both times I had blazing fast speed like that. Over at my house, the 5g is poor and I only use 4g.
@GuyInDogSuit I've been having the same issues lately. Not sure what's been going on. T-Mobile OP9P converted to DA firmware, using Family Mobile SIM connected using T-Mobile APN.
Was surprised to get these results today. Went to download an app update using mobile data, realized it downloaded in two seconds, so I figured I'd speed test it. I live in ****ty Ohio lol.

Holy mackerel!!
Anyway, to update on this.... It would seem it is definitely something in the area, and not just the 5G. I tested the LTE on my tablet and got piss-poor results on that as well. 9.89 down, 0.07 up. Yikes.
They're fine here
I was all over the place today, in at least two different counties, and tested several times. The speeds weren't spectacular, but they were still much better than the sadness I get at home. I should look into some ways to improve that, especially since it will be my only source of internet for a few days next week.
