I've never in m whole life used a gsm phone. I have the unlocked nexus and got myself tmobile service. It was the best coverage for the cost. But it seems my data speeds are sh*tty. Everything is super slow. Do I have to configure my phone for proper use with tmo? Everything seems to be OK except data. I've checked coverage I'm all green everywhere, doesn't make sense. Here's a screen cap of a speed test.

have you tested the speed in another location? example if that test was done at home, do one at work/school and compare
if it is just as slow you can try flashing a different radio..
i have generally been getting about 3-10 mbps depending on where i am/time of test...faster speeds as it gets later (network traffic slows down quite a bit at night around 10pm-midnight)
Somethings not right there. Did you just activate the service? Sometimes it can take a couple days for everything to get squared away on T-Mobile's end.
Also, have you double checked your APN settings to make sure everything is in order?
I'd also try some reboots and airplane cycles to make sure its connecting. Although it looks like you've got full HSPA+ connectivity. It could also just be a fluke with the tower you're on or the speedtest server you're testing on.

I activated the service yesterday and got the phone the day before. I will try rebooting and airplanes toggling. Data works, but at a snails pace. Here are my APN settings sorry if they're out of order.

I'm not bootloader unlocked or even rooted for that matter. When I do I will play around with radios. I even tried googling a way to force 3g instead of HSPA+ to make sure it wasn't the tower. No luck yet. I did a speed test at my home and it was the same. The speed test I posted was at work.

APNs seem right from what I can remember.
I think you either have a SIM problem, a tower problem, or data hasn't been activated properly on your account. I'd give it another full day (T-Mo can be slow to activate fully), and if its not working, call and tell them your phone's data speed is extremely slow. They can try to reset it on their end (or send new SIM) or check for a tower issue.
Did you get the 200MB plan and use it all up? Because they throttle you when you use it all up. Them look like throttled speeds to me.
Or maybe, they are throttling you by mistake...
Also, have you restarted your phone?
Power it off for a bit. Pull the battery... then start it back up. I've seen that fix MANY things, and it's easy.
I have the 30 dollar 5gb data 100 mins unlim text.

Looks like everything is as it should be. T-Mobile Monthly4G tech support is nice... but difficult to understand. I'd keep my hopes up.
OK. I'll leave it for a few days and if its still not working I'll give em a call. Once again thank you.

So its been about three days and its still the same. I flashes a few different radio firmwares and I found one that will give me anywhere from .1 to .3Mbps down. I have opened a ticked with T-Mobile thinking it may be the tower(s) in my town. Haven't heard back yet but I want to keep this updated. If it doesn't work out I will probably end up going with an at&t mnvo
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
The same things is with my phone. Three days since activation and data speeds are 1x slow. It's time to play with radios
I've tried more radios than I can count. So I ordered an st att sim and got it activated today. There is a huuuge difference from .05 tmo to 3.5 att st so I guess even if coverage is good and they say its fine there are some places where the actual back haul of the network is seriously lacking. If it still doesn't work for you go ahead and try a different provider. Made a world of difference for me.

I'm sure sprint is just doing maintenance on the tower but this is the second time that I've lost data after midnight. I know it isn't the phone because I checked another sprint phone and its doing the same thing. Right now I'm on 4g. I should speed test it. Its either that or wifi. In the morning I'm sure it will be back up.
It actually happened to me earlier like a full blown los with the circle with the line through it but it came back like right after it happened which it usually doesn't
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I don't have the los symbol, I only have the bars and no 3g or 1x. 4g works sporatically.
Its been happening to me too, along with the occasional LOS
Same issue here. I first thought I messed up my modem by flashing ek02 from eg30, but I noticed with fb21 modem that it's more stable. However, my wi-fi is less stable. Weird stuff.

I've been seeing 1x show up sporadically over the past couple of weeks, too. Poos up for a minute or two, then goes back to 3g. This is in places where I've always had steady 3g coverage.
I'm in the Milwaukee area.

I've been having a similar problem. Additionally, it's been taking longer for my phone to reconnect to 3g after losing WiFi or 4g connectivity.
It turns out that after 12 hours I still didn't have data. I called *2 and they said there wasn't an outtage. I am at work so I wouldn't get home to call on different phone to troubleshoot for another ten hours. I went back into recovery and did full wipe of everything and the full format zip. I then installed a rom full install and flashed the el29 modem then rebooted. It worked. I think when restoring a nandroid then flashing a modem it hosed the 3g. Its fixed now. Funny how when I tried to restore it said one was corrupted. Weird
Same to me me today. Had full signal but no data or txting ... Was like wtf

I'm near Houston, the other day I was roaming inside a store where I get great service. Been 1xing a bit lately
But today for half the day and counting, my 3g is broke, but 1x works cause I can get text, call.
My 4g is the only data I have.
My 3g icon stays on even if I disable 3g data. Really weird

Had it happen a bit in VA. Not certain why but seemed to happen in the same place throughout a day or two. May be a coincidence but havent seen it since moving to the FB21 modem.

I work for a cell phone provider and we partner with sprint as a roaming partner.. We had tons of calls coming in on the day you made the post of data loss.. Tier 1 troubleshooting and a little bit of probing questions and finally a call to tech support we found most with he issue were roaming.. We checked our AAA tool and switch and verified with the customer that they were roaming on the sprint network.. After calling tech.. We were advised that sprint had a nationwide data outage.. People were having no data at all, intermittent, slow, timed out connections, and they ha no ETA.. It caused a bunch of havoc, i cant have my phone on at work but before and after it did work fo me.. Im in phx with no 4g here.. However im either at work or at home.. And when im home im on wifi.. So i rarely have time to test sprints network.. I also have the airave at home.. What i do know tho, is sprints network isnt the best, and they would never admit to a network fail like that.. Then again could have been there associate and didnt know what he was saying..
Edit: entire ride home, and on airave is 1x.. Ive had 3g icon come on constantly and stay on even with wifi on and 3g off completely.. Also had gps get stuck on.. Had to reflash the rom for that one

I haven't checked yet, but i think sprint is doing some network upgrades here.
I can't get and explanation as to why I live 5 blocks from 4g coverage yet require and air rave and have spotty coverage. Very disappointing that I cant my moneys worth for the $10/month premium data fee.
All that said, I will never find a better price for a 5 phone family plan, soon to be 6.

I have a Stock (rooted) Galaxy Nexus GSM (4.0.1) software on T-Mobile. I'm getting HORRIBLY SLOW data speeds even with full signal HSPA.

It depends on ur location too...what have u averaged with other 4G phones? Keep in mind that roms use "H" or "4G" to depict the "strongest" signal....but maybe its your radio too...I'm on KL1 and it works great for me

I would try a different radio/baseband. Although people have different results, the UGKL1 and UGKK7 are made for North America including AWS bands (T-mobile). You can read more here.
The latest North American radio, UGKL1, has been working well for me. Give it a go here.

Edit: Don't mind the wifi indicator...I did these tests with wifi off.
What server are you using? Try using one near an internet backbone for the best results, the distance from you can be misleading because the connections don't always lead directly there.
Servers in or near Washington DC, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Dallas and Los Angelos should be the most reliable.
Is there any way to check if T-Mobile is throttling you?

I will try a different server. I called T-Mobile and they are doing a service check to see if the towers are jacked. They said they saw something fishy reported about the towers on Feb 29th, and they aren't sure if the issue has been fixed yet. Hopefully that's the problem and they're working on a fix. I don't think it's the speed-test app though because anything that has to do with data is incredibly slow. Took me 7 minutes to download a 2mb app! My wife's nexus s is doing the exact same thing, so I think it probably has to do with the tower (hopefully!). I'll try changing servers though and report back if the numbers improve significantly. Sad I'm the only one having a problem with this. Thanks to everyone for the input. Thanks xHausx for checking in!

No. They only throttle at specific levels. Either 2GB or 5GB depending on your plan.
Figured it out!
I figured it out! The T-Mobile tower right next to my house is bad. I was driving around and ran the speed test in a couple other spots and got some great speeds! When I got back near the tower by our house I tested again, and again it sucked...so thank God, it's the tower and not the phone! Thankfully at home I have wifi, so who cares about the tower...I mean, it'll be nice when they get it fixed, but I'm good for now. Love the 4G speeds and really glad I can use them in other spots! Had me worried for a sec! Thanks to everyone for your suggestions! Really appreciate the help.

I think this was pretty apparent when you said you had two separate T-Mo phones both having the issue in the same place.
My data signal turned grey, I had no idea why, I restarted, switched ROMS, and still, the data is gone.
Than I checked the T-Mobile site and my data plan is gone, yet I'm being charged the same amount.
I'm guessing they detected that this is not a T-Mobile phone and disabled it, but seriously, why?
And I can't even call until Tuesday as its memorial day.
Has anyone had trouble with T-Mobile in regards to the Nexus and data?
No but I've had MAJOR data issues on my Verizon Nexus, the reception is garbage I don't care if its the phone, OS, or Verizon , its GARBAGE. My bet is that its the phone.

If it's anything like what I'm experiencing, your problem has nothing to do with T-Mobile; you're simply experiencing the same "data drop" issues that a lot of us are.
I've been trying different ROM/Kernel combinations left and right to see if I can get something that A) I like and B) doesn't have the drops.
So far, from what I can tell, it seems like a lot of people on AOKP are reporting this. Someone in their thread posted to flash the 4.0.3 RIL, but I don't know how eager I am to do that when other people are reporting no drops with ROMs like Slim ICS & LiquidSmooth.
EDIT: Hmm, looks like my data connection is perpetually grayed out as well. I wonder if something is going on?

Methinks T-Mobile has officially effed up. Here's what I got when I tried to open my browser:
You currently do not have data service.
If you want to access the Internet and your current plan does not include data, you must change to a plan with data.
If your current plan includes limited data, your data bucket has been depleted. [It sure as hell hasn't!]
To obtain data service, you can:
-Renew early if your plan allows
-Upgrade to a plan with data or a plan with more data

By any chance are you on a monthly 4G or other prepaid plan?
Because if so, I've experienced something similar TWICE already...it happens whenever my service is due for renewal..I'm on the $30 100 min unlimited text and 5GB web plan and even though I always make sure to add sufficient funds before my next renewal date, when my renewal date came, I got a similar message...it took a call to customer service to get it resolved...
the second time around I got a $10 credit for my troubles but it is still annoying as hell. The reps also said it was a glitch in their system.
Not happened to me and been running my Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile for over 4 months now (and had T-Mobile for 1.5years total).
I haven't heard of this being a regular issue, and I feel like I follow T-Mobile pretty closely. I highly doubt it has anything to do with you using a GNex on their network, probably just a glitch. Call in and they'll make it right.
Happened to me once over the last month, rebooted phone and it was blue again. On AOKP M5 + Franco M4.
Grey bars means you are not connected to Google's servers.
No signal is NOT a result of grey bars.
As in, if your bars are grey you can still have voice signal and data signal.

No. T-Mobile advertises bringing your own phone to use as a feature. I've never had problems - and I started my T-Mobile account with an AT&T phone, actually.

I dont think it is a phone problem, from the looks of it you have poor signal strength. Unless you can compare side by side with a comparable phone like an Iphone or S3,. But more or less it is a sprint problem there data speeds have been on the decline.
Yup, normal for sprint. Your pings are pretty good actually. Mine can be up to several seconds. During the day my data drops to <10kbps, like a 9600 baud modem from 1993. Enjoy Sprint.

Yes i had wimax but never used it because of battery drain. The speeds on my old Evo were all 3g and i would always get atleast 1mb down now im barely getting .1mb down
Yes sprint data sucks..
Don't have an explanation then... 3G speeds for me have always been fairly consistent. If anything I found the Evo to be a little lackluster in this area. I wouldn't say the 3G speeds I get on my N2 are groundbreaking, but they're adequate.
I'm just waiting patiently for LTE to launch in my area.

THIS NOTE 2 IS SENT FROM A GALAXY WHERE SAMSUNG SPRINTS TO THE TOP, AND JELLY BEANS EAT APPLES!!!!
I saw this thread a few days ago. I went out yesterday for a drive. LTE radio on Note 2 is stronger then nexus LTE radio. Hard to go anywhere in my area and loose LTE. Regular 3g works good as well. I couldnt be happier knowing the issues with other phones connected to sprint networks. Had a Epic Touch and Nexus. Both had horrible signals.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone else has noticed that their LTE transfer speed drops after 3-4 seconds of high speed bursting.
I can consistently see this in the speedtest.net app, and also in large google market downloads.
The problem seems to kick in when the transfer speed goes over >~24mbps, and then it will just suddenly drop right down to pretty much 0, before slowly continuing at a much reduced speed. Same happens with the upload speed, but it seems to kick in around ~20mbps or less.
I've seen this at various places around the Bay Area in CA, so its not related to any local radio towers :-/
I hope my radio is not a lemon.. I first saw this when the phone was straight out the box, but I just shrugged it off. But its persistently there... (and I've 0x1'd my know now..)
Check out some T-Mobile specific forums for your answer. I don't think it's your phone. Try setting your phone for HSPA+ on the 1900mhz band to see if that is different.
It's believed that tmobile is still working on their tiered QoS. If you have unlimited you get bumped, for now.

Thanks, I will try the band idea.
I've asked the question on Tmobile's support forms, the issue may be QoS related, but who knows.

I have an ATT/straighttalk SIM coming on Monday to do some additional tests with.

How do we do this? And any issues if you do?
i get this issue as well. one thing i have noticed is that when you download a large app (50+ megs, which is actually a small app..) it will throttle me to less than 500 kbps after the first 20 seconds or 50-60 megs of progress. it stays there and never speeds back up.. i have cancelled many 100+ mb apps during downloading because they were literally constantly slowing down to the point where i didn't think they'd even finish until i hit my home wifi point. it does this on stock rom, darthstalker rom, saber kernel, compulsion kernel, stock kernel... i don't think it's the device, i think it's the service. going to keep on testing different combinations and see if i can find a fix irregardless. slow and insanely inconsistent data speeds are gonna make me go back too ATT even though i just switched to T-Mobile 2 days ago. a reliable connection is worth the extra $40/month to me.
*it's also worth noting, since i activated the TMo service yesterday, i haven't once seen more than two bars of service although i am in an area that is not largely populated and vastly surrounded by "great connection" area on T-Mobile:s page.

Are you on the 5GB/$30 prepaid plan? I wonder if the throttling is an unofficial policy on the prepaid plans.
Nope, on the normal plan that was supposed to take the place of the contracts. I get a bill at the end of the cycle like I did with att. Still happening. Its like anything I download hits a throttle after the first 200 megs. Lte speeds of 3-6 megs per sec, then bam... Sub 1 meg per sec the rest of the download. Even if there's 1gb+ left to go.

I've been discussing this same problem over on HowardForums forums for a while: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1814258-Video-Streaming-being-throttled?p=15278529

Recently, I've personally concluded that it has to do with T-Mobile working on towers in my area. There was a period of about a week or so where I was experiencing odd performance on both HSPA+ and LTE, where speeds will be fantastic for about 3-5 seconds, before dropping WAY down. Things have greatly improved recently. I did several tests the other day in several locations, and only one tower in particular resulted in the odd speeds in multiple tests. The next day, things were perfect. Then again, they recently went from 5x5 LTE to 10x10, so that could've had something to do with it.
My recommendation is to wait it out.
FYI: I'm on the $30/mo. prepaid plan (5GB @ high-seed, unlimited @ 2G).
