[Q]Wcdma?

Hey everyone, I recently got a new Android phone, Samsung galaxy s2x, it should have dual 4g capabilities. The speed isn't great compared to what others have been getting. I usually get around 3-4mbps, the Telus website says 7-14 should be attained...
My question is basically, in the wireless options, I can choose gsm, wcdma or both. Is wdcma considered hspa+ ?
I live in Montreal, where the Telus network should be fully developed. Highest speed I've got was 6mbps.
Anything wrong, or were my expectations too high when buying this phone?

Also, my girlfriend has an iPhone4 with Telus also, its often quicker than mine on the net...and its a 3g phone.

there are some from Montreal they are getting great speed
the thing is with cell phones, it depends highly in your location and tower
also in Canada do not believe anything that says 4G it's all fake
our infrastructure is poor compared to the USA, at best we can only get good 3G speed even when you see 4G
even the Rogers LTE are no where near as good they also top out around 15 Mbps at its best, while the USA or other counterparts they get like 30 Mbps on LTE

So i'm stuck with slow speeds lol?
I kinda regret going with Telus, they have terrible reception as well as slow speeds...

It really all depends on where you are when you take the tests. Here is mine from just 5 minutes ago.

I just tested mine and I got 19 down and 4 up on Telus. Most days I get an average of 10. I live outside of Vancouver. Downtown I am lucky to get 3.
Telus has always given me faster speeds than Rogers. I am very happy with Telus's network.

I think you are just not tech savy enough to use a cell like the S2X. Try doing a speed test in your browser and you will see that the speed test.net app is crap. I get 21 mbps downlink on telus in mtl using speedtest.net in dolphin HD (using app I get 3-10mbps). Stop blaming the carriers. People like you are just never happy but its your own fault! Maybe also if you would test your phone outside your basement it would help! Mtl reception is flawless, actually reception in QC in general is great.

I have tried all the different modems from the kj3, vk1 and even the Blaze LB7 and different roms and I still get miserable speed on my phone. I have many friends with different phones even 3G phones that are doing alot better. I am getting speeds of less than 300 k downlaod with with full bars.

I think some people had similar problems as you. I don't remember exactly but some workarounds are using the supercharger script and running those 3g scripts or whatever it's called.
Someone if i recall correctly couldn't get fast data at all, he opted for a warranty exchange and that fixed it for him.
If anything you could try making your own thread in the Q&A area and maybe those people who had similar problems can answer it for you. Obviously it's not because of your location because your friends' phones get fast speed in the same location

3G Speeds Lacking

Hey guys, just got my phone yesterday. This thing is blazing fast compared to my OC'd DINC in terms of processing power. However, my 3G speeds suck! My DINC would consistently be 1.5 mbps down and 500kbps up at my house. With the Nexus my very best has been 600kbps up. I have my friend's Droid Pro right next to my Nexus getting a full mbps faster than me.
This is a big deal for me as I only get 3G half the time I use my phone.
I am on the stock OS and kernel with unlocked bootloader and root. I also have CDMA only enabled.

So you get 100kbit better speeds upstream and that's bad? Sounds like you are just limited by whatever signal you get in your area as the 1.5 down is still not max for a dinc.
Edit: Sorry I couldn't see your screenshot in tapatalk had to paste the image shack URL into a browser, i was going from what you said. Those are some crap speeds. Try getting a new SIM from your carrier.

It can be really hard to know if it's better or worse. There are so many variables that come into play like the congestion on the tower/network and congestion on the server your conducting the speed test on.

You don't need a new SIM if your EVDO speeds suck, you just.. are kind of SoL. I'm surprised you see 1.5 mpbs on your Incredible though, my EVDO speeds in Chicago were awful.

3m down is really good at least where I live, on the old 05/02 radio best I saw was 1.9 down now with the 06/04 radios I'm averaging about 2-2.5m down 1m up

OP is talking about CDMA on Verizon. Which is never going to do any better than 1.5mbps or so.
Those speeds you're getting aren't great. But I'd just ask other users on the network where you live.

Sorry about that, I reposted the picture. Again, this is from a CDMA Nexus. My friend who has his nexus is consistently over 1mbps. However, his dad who has a Nexus is in the same boat as me.
Really baffled by this one.

I thonk 3.2 mbps is the best you can do on verizon iirc.

Compared to my old Droid X and a family members Droid RAZR my Galaxy Nexus doesn't even get HALF the speed and VERY crappy signal with constant dropped calls and trouble with data. Switching from Wi-fi to 3g takes from a couple of minutes to having to reboot the phone completely just for 3g to activate! This problem NEEDS to be fixed, verizon's solution to just increase the bars visually is a slap in the face to us experiencing this problem!

[Q] Best ROM/Kernel/Modem Combinations?

There has been discussion, but has anyone found the magic formula? I know many people say the modem is completely independent of the ROM. But others have made the argument that data speeds are married to both.
So, what is your ROM/Kernel/Modem combination and data speeds as well as your location?
I'm in North San Diego County on AOKP B34 ROM, FD24 KERNEL, and FD19 modem. This is not a very good marriage. But Sprint 3G speeds in San Diego suck, have sucked, and probably will suck for the immediate future. Best DL speeds have been 800 kb/s and uploads at around 200 kb/s.

Modems work different for every phone..so there is no "magic combination" sorry =(

EK02 is the best modem for me all around. I'm running it on EL29 with decent battery life. I get around 3.5 hours of screen time by the end of the day no underclock or undervolt.

Yep. I've tried all of them in monroeville and they are terrible for 3G. I'm hitting an average of 1 mbps down with 100 ping at Duquesne university. It randomly peaks at 2 mbps.

I'm lucky if I get 300kbs down and over 100kbs up on a good day...
Nevermind did a speed test this morning hit 1232kbps down, 667kbps up...
Ping 112ms very suprising...

It sounds funny reading that 1Mbps is terrible. I haven't exceeded that kind of speed outside of Wifi since I switched to Sprint. My last test had communication failure at ping. not kidding! ROFL---FML 15 more months and I'm out.

Wow, I average 8mbps on 4g. I love Sprint, never had a problem.

Its probably a PA thing. Sprint has been horrible in San Diego. Every metro area has 4G except San Diego. But even AT&T 3G is 10 times faster than Sprints 3G.
I had unlimited plan and left AT&T because they throttled me. But, even when they throttled me, it was faster than Sprint.

Go figure! It makes no sense at all not to have cities with high pop densities without 4G (or well serviced 3G). Yet, Sprint finds a way to avoid the common sense virus.

The title says it all. Post a picture of your speed test. Also if you want post modem and ROM you use.
I hope in the long run this little thread can help people when it comes to info on modems and setups people are using.

I've been using Sprint for years, their 4G service for over a year now and I've never seen speeds anywhere near what I've seen past few days... it's crazy. I'm hitting 13mb at night, 11mb during the day... I'm VERY pleased right now, it's like years of struggle and their rewarding me.
Rom is straight up Cyanogen 9.

For me, ping times double on ICS.

From playing around past several days, it's all around the pacific northwest, Oregon, Washington, etc.
My guess is they're upgrading towers for LTE. 3G speeds are still the same though, that is to say, beyond belief terrible. But 4G has gone nuts. I might try to find a Sprint store in the area and check to see if LTE is live yet.

So you say your wimax 4g speeds have gone up as a result of the network vision work? I thought that was for lte and 3g improvements only? Can anyone else comment on that?

Beats me as to whats going on... all I know is I've never seen a speedtest result beyond 7mb or so on a GOOD day, now even during busy hours I'm hitting 11, 12, 13... maybe so many Sprint subscribers have cancelled their service due to poor network speeds there's simply now an abundance of bandwidth. lol :laugh:

Notice the same here in Orlando, 4g speeds have never been higher. Could it be people switching to LTE devices and getting off of wimax?

Have you looked at the ping differences?

3G speed compare to Epic 4G touch

I swear it is not my imagination and I finally did a speedtest side by side with my wife's phone which is the E4GT to confirm it. Previously with my E4GT, I see speed as low as 100-200K while on 3G in the Tampa/St Pete/Clearwater area.
Since I am stuck with 3G with the Note 2 until December or so before LTE becomes live in my area, I've been testing the 3G speeds since it doesn't seem to suck so bad compare to when I was using the E4GT. So far I can get at least 400-500 Kbps in the really bad area and up to 1.5 Mbps for a good area. I average around 600kbps+ in most area and I remembered I was getting 300-400kbps with my E4GT.
So testing it side by side with the E4GT, one after another, and simultaneously, I was consistently getting 1.5 to 2 times the speed of the E4GT.

It's probably because the Epic 4g Touch had horrible modems with it after the ICS update. That's prob why.

I have noticed the same I am also coming from ET4G and I feel that 3G doesnt suck so bad like it was with the SII

My brother was visiting and after seeing the features of my phone, he went to T Mobile store and paid full price. His 4G speed, tested in 4 different parts of town, was anywhere from 10 to 15 Mbps. And that is HSPA+ not even LTE. Can't wait for LTE to come on live. Like you said, 3G doesn't suck so bad and it is actually tolerable.
E4GT touch 3G modem was still horrible with my Calk 2.8.1 ROM and gingerbread EL29 modem!

My note has WAY faster data than my touch.

My OG Epic would max at about 100 kbps at home...once I flashed the Nexus modem (almost identical hardware) I saw speeds averaging 800 and up to 1400.
With my note, I have been averaging 400-500, so there's room to improve the modern enough to double the speeds...at least for me.

Sad to say but this is one of the best speed tests I have gotten in Corona, CA area. I will be getting a GNoteII in a few weeks so I will post a speed test then too...just to see if it is true.

I'd say my 3G speeds feel better on GNote vs E4GT. Autoprime said it has to do with the eHRPD layer our phones run on whereas the E4GT ran on EVDO layer I believe.

Samething here. With the E4GT I would get dialup speeds. With the note im getting 1.5 - 2.0 mbps and im on 2 or 3 bars. (3G)

My 3g speeds are way better on my note, 2..I haven't ran a speed test but I've downloaded dead trigger, grand theft auto 3.need for speed most wanted and they didn't take that long.. On my epic 4G touch I wouldn't dream of downloading a huge file via 3g..I'd probably be waiting days lol

my 3g speeds on the note 2 have been utterly horrible im talking my highest ever was 554kbps just once otherwise ive been in the 20-90kbps range at all times, thinking about going back to my e4gt just for the wimax
