[Q] Rom Manager Premium - Still recommended? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

In this guide:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...d-phone-with-rom-manager-full-backup-restore/
Rom Manager is used. And, Premium is recommended. But, the guide is from Jan, 2011.
Some of the Google Play Reviews express concerns, such as:
Do not purchase. Developer sold touch version which no longer works and will not support it. You'll have to pay for it twice. I'll never buy another app from this person.

Don't waste your money! This version doesn't upgrade much compared to the regular, free version. I originally got this thinking that it also supported Clockwork Mod Touch, and you have to pay extra for that to be installed on your device.

No support ! Do yourself a favor and just get TWRP. I did. Paid for premium and will not let me update without paying again.

So, now I'm not sure if I should follow the guide, or not. Is Rom Manager and esp Rom Manager Premium still a valid and recommended way of backing up and restoring, as well as flashing new ROMs?

Personally, I think nothing beats titanium backup for app backup. Recovery is best for wiping. Tho, for flashing 4.1.2 roms, the infamous cache and super wipes are great. Darkside is out dated. But for 4.2.2 and 4.3, the recovery wipes work fine. Most will recommend twrp 2.6.1.0 for recovery. Including me.
Rom manager for installing roms....don't! LOL. If it even works.
And a tip ....don't trust anything you read that isn't dated 2013....well, unless there are current posts in the thread that make it appear still relevant. A lot changes in a short time with android, tho some things remain constant. Really gotta be careful deciding if things are too out dated.
Generally, rooting and flashing recovery guides are still relevant. Just gotta use current files. Any guide should have been updated, especially if its a sticky thread....tho I haven't checked myself.
Good luck!

OK, so to clarify... for 4.1.2 roms, use infamous, NOT twrp? And, never Darkside, regardless of rom.
Use twrp for recovery, but NOT for wipes, if I'm flashing 4.1.2.
You prefer Titanium over App2Zip for app backup.
Do I have all that right?

I was just reading up on another tool that looks very interesting. It's called Boot Manager Pro. Would you steer clear of that, too? Just stick to twrp for installing roms?

Yeah, that's been my concern and frustration. I'm actually having a hard time finding guides written in 2013. But, I think I'm getting there -- thanks to folks like you.
PS: I've used up my daily thanks allocation, so this post will have to suffice.

There's no substitute for titanium backup in my experience ....and paid version lets you freeze apps and do bulk restores without interaction. Well worth the 5 bucks or so.
No one uses anything other that twrp or cwm for flashing. And most as far as I can see prefer twrp. And at the moment 2.6.1.0 is the best version.
Yes....infamous wipes are best for 4.1.2 roms. There's a cache wipe zip.....good for preflash and fixing troubles. And there's a superwipe for using before rom flashes. Don't use that one without backing up apps first....cause it wipes everything. (Not your sd cards tho....internal or external. )
Sms backup is good if you care about backing up texts too.
That's it...you seem to be getting it!

Rom Manager- yes or no?

I've been reading a lot about Rom manager and the opinions are varied.
Is it okay to use for flashing, or better just to use it to download ROMs and get into CWR easier and go manual from there?
How about the backup function?

I use it for backups (because it's easy to give them a custom name), and Fixing Permissions. Anything else I do from CWM after downloading on a computer. Just my style.
I don't have a need for it, I like to do everything in recovery.
I like it for downloading Roms and installing... As stated above, backups are easy to rename or delete... I also use it flash kernals that I have saved in Dropbox... Check for new Roms...
All in all I'm happy with the Rom Manager app

I have had varied results with rom manager. It's great when it works, but really frustrating when it won't. I use it for backups and flashing kernels and themes and such, but I prefer to do roms manually, just because I like to wipe the dalvic cache, something rom manager won't do.

me 5, wish there was a alternative to rom manager
It's a great app, I use it for Backup and to check out random ROM info.
That been said, other than backup, I do everything else in CWM recovery.
Thanks for all the opinions!
So far, I've use it to download a rom, make backups (love that you can give them recognizable names) and to boot into CWM. Is it somehow safer to boot into recovery after shutting down the phone?
Saving back ups are great as others have pointed out, but it is also a great way for a newbie to flashing roms to get comfortable IMO. My first few months of flashing new roms was done all through rom manager.
I used mainly to update roms since they have that list thing, saves me time and effort to manually go on xda and such sites to check if the roms have been updated. Don't see it as anything nooby, just don't feel like scrolling through ads on XDA just to see if the TSMPoolParty rom has been updated or not, when I can just check in the Rom Manager and not have to deal with any ads.
The ads prevent you from coming here? Really?
Well thankfully for me I don't run into ads on any website I go to.
If you are using Firefox you should download Noscript. Probably the best Add-on I use to date. I never look at those annoying ads or pop-ups anymore.
I love ROM manager! It is excellent for making any backup, might I suggest weekly (or more!) backups with this app. It also good for downloading and managing new and current ROMs. Installing a ROM is probably most efficiently done through Clockwork though... unfortunately the ability to wipe certain things can't be done in this app... hopefully those are planned features though, if they're even possible.
I perfer to use CWM instead of rom manager. Just seems more safe to me. I can ensure that i do a full wipe and clear cache. Sometimes Rom Manager may not do it fully and when you flash roms is craps out.
Can someone tell me if there is a difference between turning off the phone and booting into CWM, and using Rom Manager to get there?

Broke my phone installing AOKP Alpha. Please help!!

Need help bad..
I was using CM9 Beta 2 and decided to try AOKP Alhpa build 31. Someone had said to me that all I needed was to clear data/factory cache and install right on top and that’s what I did… The installation went on a loop so I booted in cwm5 and clear all the data/factory cache again and tried to reinstall CM9 Beta 2 that I had on in the first place and now it won’t get passed the loading screen now..
What should I do? I did made a backup of stock android 2.3.6 before installing CM9 in the first place, can I restore it?
Thanks

Odin back to stock and start fresh. Flash AOKP, flash gapps and boot up. Then if you wanna try to restore data you could use the app of your choice to restore apps & data or boot into recovery and advance restore data. That's what I would do anyway....someone with more experience should come along pretty soon with more helpful info if this isn't enough. Your phone isn't broken tho. Honestly you could clear data, cache and dalvik caches flash AOKP the flash Gapps and you should be alright. Can't restore your stock nandroid without Odin tho CM9 is ICS so is AOKP and your backup is Gingerbread.

Restore your GB, download AOKP again and check the md5. Flash AOKP and gapps. If you can get the Titanium Backup Pro you can restore your Apps Data back from a nandroid. Dont use the Advance Restore/ Data on CWM, It will break everything.
Edit. If your GB was BML you have to Odin back. So go to Dev Section and download an Odinable version of some already rooted GB.
Be sure of checking Repartition.

Thanks guys... I really don't know what happened tonight.
I did clear dalvik as well before installing AOKP.. and also the "partition something" right under the data/factory.
I noticed that once in a loop the Android logo would show up with that triangle warning sign right on top and reboot on its own, it would keep doing that on a loop..
I'll Odin back to stock and back to cm9..

Awe the broken android loop... its just a bad download. Be extrememly careful with odin especially if you don't comprehend it. In fact if you don't fully understand it... don't do it... until you do. Oding back to stock reroot and redownload and flash aokp and the gapps and you should be on your merry way =]

The recovery builder is now building version 6 of the recovery. The main changes are as follows:
Backups are much faster. 4-5x faster. (Bug fix due to excessive status updates of the UI and new backup technique)
Incremental backups are smaller. Way way smaller. Only 15-20MB each for each additional backup of a ROM. This is done using a new tool I wrote to dedupe the files between incremental backups to eliminate duplicates.
Here's a test build for maguro (Galaxy Nexus GSM):

I miss the clockworkmod-based 4EXT Recovery (for the Nexus One, amongst others), though.
I preferred the polished look and feel of TWRP, but alas when I boot into recovery it would be gone. Im not sure what's going on there.
CWM so far hasn't given me any problems, and now I have several nandroids using the recovery, so Ill probably stick with this version.
I wont say neither is better. As long as they are functional its all a matter of preference.
CWM > TWRP tried the latter didn't like it as its pretty limited when I had it. Couldn't flash Zephyr Keys and the like. Still loving the original.

I really liked CMWR, i have used it almost in every Android phone i've had but TWRP is way to go now. Extremely fast backups, touch-friendly UI and most importantly - you can give names to your backups right from recovery which i find very useful.

I was SO confused. I've been using CWM Recovery since 2008... but the same backup states with each recovery resulted in 1200mb file size with CWM and about 700mb with TWRP using compression. Still sorta prefer CWM's looks, but that could just be because I'm used to it after so long.

yup. cwm was a tweaked amon ra recovery. speaking off, ive been trying to talk amon ra into making a new ns and gnex recovery(since he has both phones), but hes pretty solid solid about being retired from recovery work. at least we have a great base that these new recoveries can use to grow from.

I believe you're speaking of differential backups, where only updated data is backed up and a centralized backup is used as a base.
I don't believe differential backups are supported by TWRP, but it is on their to-do list. So at this point, every backup is a full backup.

I haven't used new CWM yet, how is it? Incremental backups sound cool but makes me worry that there's more things that could go wrong. Since I've got a 32GB Gnex I'm not really concerned about size though.

Imho Factory reset does not wipe system. Hower this is usually handled by the updater script in the rom zip.

CWM 6027 Touch from ATT forum

Alright....so alittle history. kc_exactly is to blame and to thank for this. He just got me thinking. Especially with people starting to test the JB port from houstonn. Which only flashes with CWM.
Disclaimer: You do this at your own risk!! Can't blame anybody but yourself if it messes things up!
I installed sk8erwitskil's Touch CWM 6.0.2.7 v14.4.7 from the ATT forums here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34567118&postcount=1.
I wanted to see if it would work as kc had said in a post earlier. And it did and does!!! CWM backup works using .tar. I haven't tried dedup yet.
So what's the purpose of this post you ask? Well, from what I've found out so far, we can install CWM, create a backup using .tar which is default, and restore with it. In "mount and storage" I formated system, data, cache. In advanced, I formated dalvic cache. Pretty much wiping out the phone and it restored just fine. Actually 4 times so far.
So, and again, part of this has been said by kc_exactly, if you keep TWRP, AND CWM6027 recoveries, your ROM of choice, and backups in both TWRP and CWM on your Internal storage you'll be able to bounce back and forth testing the JB port or whatever else will require CWM.
I've done this multiple times now and it's worked everytime!!!
Make a TWRP backup
Install CWM 6027, reboot to system
reboot to recovery and make a CWM backup using .tar
That's it!!
Now each time you want to use a different recovery, just install it, reboot to recovery and restore your backups.
Maybe this is old news, or even a "No sh*t Sherlock" thing. But our CWM had too many issues, and I'm really liking sk8erwitskil's Touch version. And it seems to be working well. I was in CWM for at least 10min straight and it never got hot.
It does have somewhat of a learning curve, so make sure you read sk8's instuctions on the first 2 posts.

Re: CWM6027Touch from ATT forum
But don't we need to use CWM to flash and/or update houstonn updates?

If I'm reading the thread correctly, the idea is that you make a backup including the recovery so you can switch back and forth at will.

I'm not sure if this is a question, or a comment? So I'll take it as a question.
You are correct. It's been working great for me so far. I'll bet I've restored over 20 times now and it's worked great. I've put it through all its paces and it's worked fine. I've tested and played with houstonn JB and I gotta say I really like JB!
So from what I can tell, we can use this recovery, and do whatever we want. Play with JB for a while, then switch back to ICS.

This is an older recovery. And the wifi has to do with the ROM, more than likely. Go to the TWRP thread or the root guide, under Working Recoveries. There you'll find the newest recoveries. KK included.
Then go to the ROM thread that you flashed and your answer is probably there. If not, ask there.
