after flashing boot, we don't need to erase cache (by fastboot erase cache)? Damn, I always used to do that unnecessarily then:/

i've never seen the need to do it, and before someone says "what about wiping data/system/cache" Factory reset does it all! your just putting more stress on the nand by wiping them all again individually

Imho Factory reset does not wipe system. Hower this is usually handled by the updater script in the rom zip.

Broke my phone installing AOKP Alpha. Please help!!

Need help bad..
I was using CM9 Beta 2 and decided to try AOKP Alhpa build 31. Someone had said to me that all I needed was to clear data/factory cache and install right on top and that’s what I did… The installation went on a loop so I booted in cwm5 and clear all the data/factory cache again and tried to reinstall CM9 Beta 2 that I had on in the first place and now it won’t get passed the loading screen now..
What should I do? I did made a backup of stock android 2.3.6 before installing CM9 in the first place, can I restore it?
Thanks

Odin back to stock and start fresh. Flash AOKP, flash gapps and boot up. Then if you wanna try to restore data you could use the app of your choice to restore apps & data or boot into recovery and advance restore data. That's what I would do anyway....someone with more experience should come along pretty soon with more helpful info if this isn't enough. Your phone isn't broken tho. Honestly you could clear data, cache and dalvik caches flash AOKP the flash Gapps and you should be alright. Can't restore your stock nandroid without Odin tho CM9 is ICS so is AOKP and your backup is Gingerbread.

Restore your GB, download AOKP again and check the md5. Flash AOKP and gapps. If you can get the Titanium Backup Pro you can restore your Apps Data back from a nandroid. Dont use the Advance Restore/ Data on CWM, It will break everything.
Edit. If your GB was BML you have to Odin back. So go to Dev Section and download an Odinable version of some already rooted GB.
Be sure of checking Repartition.

Isn't it bad to restore Stock GB coming from CM9? Every phone is different but I always Advance Restore with no data corruption....I use My Backup Pro for small things, but ok good looking out.

Thanks guys... I really don't know what happened tonight.
I did clear dalvik as well before installing AOKP.. and also the "partition something" right under the data/factory.
I noticed that once in a loop the Android logo would show up with that triangle warning sign right on top and reboot on its own, it would keep doing that on a loop..
I'll Odin back to stock and back to cm9..

Awe the broken android loop... its just a bad download. Be extrememly careful with odin especially if you don't comprehend it. In fact if you don't fully understand it... don't do it... until you do. Oding back to stock reroot and redownload and flash aokp and the gapps and you should be on your merry way =]

[Q] Rom Manager Premium - Still recommended?

In this guide:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...d-phone-with-rom-manager-full-backup-restore/
Rom Manager is used. And, Premium is recommended. But, the guide is from Jan, 2011.
Some of the Google Play Reviews express concerns, such as:
Do not purchase. Developer sold touch version which no longer works and will not support it. You'll have to pay for it twice. I'll never buy another app from this person.
Click to collapse
Don't waste your money! This version doesn't upgrade much compared to the regular, free version. I originally got this thinking that it also supported Clockwork Mod Touch, and you have to pay extra for that to be installed on your device.
Click to collapse
What happened? Very buggy lately.

No support ! Do yourself a favor and just get TWRP. I did. Paid for premium and will not let me update without paying again.
Click to collapse
So, now I'm not sure if I should follow the guide, or not. Is Rom Manager and esp Rom Manager Premium still a valid and recommended way of backing up and restoring, as well as flashing new ROMs?
Personally, I think nothing beats titanium backup for app backup. Recovery is best for wiping. Tho, for flashing 4.1.2 roms, the infamous cache and super wipes are great. Darkside is out dated. But for 4.2.2 and 4.3, the recovery wipes work fine. Most will recommend twrp 2.6.1.0 for recovery. Including me.
Rom manager for installing roms....don't! LOL. If it even works.
And a tip ....don't trust anything you read that isn't dated 2013....well, unless there are current posts in the thread that make it appear still relevant. A lot changes in a short time with android, tho some things remain constant. Really gotta be careful deciding if things are too out dated.
Generally, rooting and flashing recovery guides are still relevant. Just gotta use current files. Any guide should have been updated, especially if its a sticky thread....tho I haven't checked myself.
Good luck!

OK, so to clarify... for 4.1.2 roms, use infamous, NOT twrp? And, never Darkside, regardless of rom.
Use twrp for recovery, but NOT for wipes, if I'm flashing 4.1.2.
You prefer Titanium over App2Zip for app backup.
Do I have all that right?

There's no substitute for titanium backup in my experience ....and paid version lets you freeze apps and do bulk restores without interaction. Well worth the 5 bucks or so.
No one uses anything other that twrp or cwm for flashing. And most as far as I can see prefer twrp. And at the moment 2.6.1.0 is the best version.
Yes....infamous wipes are best for 4.1.2 roms. There's a cache wipe zip.....good for preflash and fixing troubles. And there's a superwipe for using before rom flashes. Don't use that one without backing up apps first....cause it wipes everything. (Not your sd cards tho....internal or external. )
Sms backup is good if you care about backing up texts too.
That's it...you seem to be getting it!

Try wipe system cache and dalvik cache.
Btw, you updated to stock 4.2.2 with sense 5 via ota or manual flashing? The latter often has problem due to incorrect flashing steps or bad source file (wrong/corrupted).

Are you unlocked the bootloader are you have warranty? I think the factory recovery can do this go in recovery and after this press volume up + power button onse short
If everything works fine after wipe, do a nandroid backup of rom and save it for future stock restoration when needed.

Yes, I already unlocked my bootloader. The factory recovery cannot do this. And in fastboot I only can wipe the cache, the dalvik-cache cannot be wiped remotely.

In this case install Philz recovery extract from zip recovery.img and put in your fastboot folder go in bootloader and use the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img after this go in recovery and wipe dalvik and cashe but if factory reset didn't help I am not shure this will!

In philz go under wipe cache partition and select yes.Go back to main menu and click on advanced and click on wipe dalvik cache. Now reboot your phone and see if it goes past the boot screen. If still doesn't succeed then go to wipe data/factory reset(will wipe the internal phone memory,so will lose everything) and you need to reflash your stock rom via odin(if downloaded from sammobile) and re root your phone. or if it's a flashable zip file you can reflash it via philz recovery.
