[Q] Evo Root Fail

Today I tried the new method to obtain S-off and root my 2.3.3 Evo. All went fine but now my phone will only boot into the clockwork recovery tool. How can I fix my phone or get it back to normal?

Have you tried to flash a ROM?
You can try to download and flash a ROM from this site.
Also can you get to your bootloader by pressing volume down and power if so you can find an ruu to put on your sd to put you back to stock.

I tried to flash a cm7 but I got a status error 7 so I am downloading synergy now.

Make sure you wipe everything but sdcard.
Also its possible you got a bad download I also recommend using Amon ra 2.3

I tried installing Synergy but I got the following messages:
assert failed: write_raw_image_("/tmp/boot.img","boot")
E:Error in /sdcard/Synergy-RLS1-supersonic.zip (status 7)

You might have a bad dl are you downloading from your phone on 3g.
And you should try this recovery I had nothing but problems with cwm when I first rooted and went to ra and never looked back.

You can also try flashing this before you flash a ROM it will wipe for you and don't worry it won't wipe your sdcard.

I've been downloading on my computer from my home network. I was able to install my the Rom from it!!! Thank you so much! If I wanted to try on another rom what all would i need to wipe?

First thing first make a nandroid backup then you can download that vr-superwipe I posted but I'm not really 100% if that works in cwm recovery but when you wipe wipe everything but your sdcard well you don't really have to wipe stats but I don't even think that option is in cwm.
You should really think about switching to Amon ra 2.3 if you haven't you can even flash it from ROM Manager.

Sorry for bringing this dumb thread back to the top but I couldn't start a whole new thread for one of my stupid questions. I wanted to know if a nandroid backup backs up everything? Like, could I do a back up then wipe my entire phone of everything, install a new rom, and then go back to my old rom from loading the backup?

yes as long as you backup everything then it will restore just make sure to backup everything I'm not sure what recovery you use.

Yeah just make sure to backup android-secure and sdext if your partitioned and you should be good thats the whole point of a backup.
Editlus the ones that come checked already data/boot/system etc..

Alternatives to Clockwork recovery

i have used clockwork recovery for a while. But is is old with not much development. is there a alternative that is better with all the functionality and more.

Clockwork mod has set the standard for custom recoveries I wouldn't suggest deviating from it. But if you dont care you can try TWRP its not bad, you can theme it and its touch like Cwm

I'll second TWRP
when playing around with different roms and kernels, it's layout just seems more logical and natural. Didn't have any problems so far with wiping and installing stuff (that wipe cache/dalvik button after install is really handy)
Hope they continue to develop

I also use twrp. Best recovery overall IMO.

clockwork never restores my nandroid backups. it always errors out near the end of the restore. even with a wiped phone and a fresh root and rom. liquid rom

Sounds like bad nand memory not a recovery... I could be wrong though. Or your partitions are corrupt.

how do you fix a bad nand memory?, or fix the partition?
clockwork finds the nand backup fine and starts the restore process. restores system fine, secure fine, but errors out while restoring data

You dont... means busted phone... like i said i could be wrong. Do you have enough space for the nandroid? you need about 2gigs for it to back up properly depending on how much /data you have... like how many apps you have... i have roughly 30-40 and my nandroids are around 800mbs... otherwise yes it will error.

that's crazy to think about. I remember when Koush made it for the D1 just so we could flash CM because SPR used a different format. Thinking back, that guy did a LOT in a short amount of time

+1 on this. I had just started using 4EXT on my Evo 3d, it was great. I think Clockwork mod is great as well but I prefer 4EXT and TWRP's user interface. I would use TWRP but it seems a lot of mods I wanna flash can't be done with it.

I really liked AmonRA's recovery when I was on the Dream. I was sad when I had to switch to CM. But, now I'm cool with it.

I've gone back to cm touch after using TWRP for a while.
TWRP is great, and I did like the ability to queue zips, but I had trouble with nandroids and with rom manager integration. Basically, I would hit apply in rom manager, and my phone would boot to the menu in TWRP instead of flashing the rom. Ultimately, nothing beats the ease of being able to hit a button in Android, and have the phone reboot and automatically install your updates. (On the other hand, if someone can tell me how to integrate TWRP with rom manager, that'd be awesome...)
With nandroids, the process took about 3 seconds and the files weren't nearly big enough, so I guess it was missing something.

It's called learn to do the process yourself and not use rom manager...I have not had it on my phone since the evo it has never really worked on a Samsung phone and koush never wanted to fix it...

Though somebody helpfully just suggested on another thread that I should try goo manager instead of ROM manager. I might give that a go.

Latest CWM?

I have been running AOKP ICS for a while now and I had TWRP as my recovery. Well after flashing around a bit I had to reflash a rom and was unable to inject TWRP for it to boot. As a result I have CWM 6.0.1.3 I think. Is this the latest and why would I have a backup fail to create a MD5, therefore rendering that backup useless? CWM seems fine for flashing and wiping, but backups are super important. Any help would be awesome!

6.0.1.3 is the latest and I know, it can't make a nandroid backup
If you want make a backup on CWM just back to 5.0.2.7
Or use TWRP, I like TWRP

I'm kinda in the same boat. I ran into this issue when I was trying-out CM9. Now I'm on CM10 9/14 Nightly, which installed with CWM 6.0.1.3. I'm ready to flash the NS4G modem AIO and give it a spin now that the roaming issue is fixed. However, I want to be safe about it and run a nandroid backup first. If I can't restore my nandroid using CWM 6.0.1.3, can I use 5.0.2.7 with CM10?
Can I just CWM flash 5.0.2.7 over 6.0.1.3 or am I better off flashing TWRP?

Why does cm roms install a recovery any ways?!? I remember back in froyo rom days around hear. Some Devs *****ing about roms installing recoverys & apks to /data/ every one at that time came to agree that Roms SHOULD NOT INSTALL A RECOVERY.
I mean if a new cm rom needs a new cwm recovery then FLASH the new recovery reboot recovery & flash the rom

Believe it had to do MTD. Last I read about this, been a while, the 5.5 version of CWM was specifically for MTD and the 5.0 version was BML. I could very well be incorrect, but that's what I recall reading a while ago.

5.0.2.7 works on MTD
IDK I just miss having the cmw flashable cwm recovery zips. Luckely I have got gotten in to a pickle like many have

OK -- Now I get why I couldn't flash 5.0.2.7 over 6.0.1.3 when I was trying to get back out of CM9 a month or so ago. However, I ended up Odining back to stock and installed TPR MTD and I could swear that I ended up with CWM 5.0.2.7 on MTD.
I'm soooo confused.....
I just want to make a restorable nandroid of my CM10.

Yup. I've never been able to restore a nandroid using 6.0.1.3. I always get an MD5 checksum error. To be honest, I haven't tried in a while, but that was my experience a month or so ago when on CM9. I have no idea if the problem lies in the CWM backup or the restore process.
I'll give it another shot now to see if I can backup and restore my CM10. Stay tuned.

Well, Ahhhl be! (my best Gomer Pyle impression -- you youngsters can Google Gomer Pyle). I ran a nandroid in 6.0.1.3 and advance-restored data successfully. I don't understand what all the complaining is about....

I know that just about every time I have had problems nandroiding my sdcard was on the way out:banghead:
I forget the name of the program (Windows) but it has a Black Cats face (head shot) for in icon & its really good at testing flash media.

TWRP Problem!

Hi, So when I tried to open up twrp recovery, it wouldnt open....it would just stay at the logo and blink every now.and then....So I used oden and installed cwm over twrp and it was fine....I didnt like cwm so I went back to twrp..... it works fine and I can do everything EXCEPT some files are inaccessible and every time I flash something,it works but also gives me the error measages in the image I posted... does anyone know how to fix this?

Maybe try installing twrp from goo manager while connected to WiFi to ensure a good download

I had the same exact problem a couple days ago. I fixed it by going Into goo manager and re flashing a new TWRP. I did it on Mobile Data, worked fine!

Go back to 2.3.3.0. Search for the flashables ones. Since 2.4.2.1 TWRP have a lot of issues.

I see a lot of people complaining about TWRP related issues with various versions of this recovery.
Is there any reason people don't talk about CWM around here? I've been using different versions of cwm touch and twrp ... And I'm honestly pretty happy with cwm.
Why does it appear that people avoid talking about cwm? ... If indeed it works as well as it seems to me that it does?

One reason is that a lot of people think it's better and recommend it to others. I used cwm on my old evo and was going to when I got my s3, but most people and roms were recommending twrp. I've been using it and have tried out cwm as well. For me, at least it hasn't been problematic, but I don't download them through the goo manager. As I feel like I have less control over what I'm getting (I don't even know what version I'm getting until after I download it). That, and I just don't trust the phone to download without errors even when on Wi-Fi.

I just actually switched to cwm a couple days ago because twrp had been giving me backup and restore problems.. everything twrp can do cwm does also, and it seems to be faster backing up and restoring also, but that might just be placebo... devs recommend twrp because that is what their Rom/kernel/mod was tested with... 99% of the time cwm will work just fine also

Actually, having used both, I think TWRP had been the better of the two because of the ease of naming your nandroids and the fact that backups in TWRP don't take up so much space as the CWM backups do. Have you seem the crazy Blobs folder in CWM? I like backing stuff up to the PC, but the CWM backups made that process extremely painful. I don't know what happened to make TWRP so unreliable recently, but I just noticed a newer version is out: 2.5.0.0

There's nothing bad about CWM, but is 2013 and you can't rename your nands which is very important(not necesary) in a phone which date as 1970. Also the touch version looks like a '90 recovery.
But if you want a issues free TWRP go back to 2.3.3.0.

If you update from goo manager, a pop up will tell you what version you are about to install beforehand. Also the webpage that it takes you to in order to start the auto download also states the name of the .IMG which also indicates version. I know what you mean about trusting downloads from the phone though. I personally think that is the reason a lot of people have issues with twrp. I've always updated to the latest twrp and flash almost daily, but have never had to switch versions because of bugs. All versions have ran perfect for me.

I've used both for quite a while. I used to only use cwm for the longest but decided to try out twrp because of those ridiculous blobs! What's with that? So I decided to try twrp and I've stayed because of all the little features like a warnings before you wipe things you shouldn't, option to flash more than one zip at once, option to clear cache and dalvik right after flashing, etc... Plus there are some pretty major features that get overlooked. Like the built in file browser. I installed miui once and it created a folder I could not delete and keep deleted. Every time I would reboot, it would come back. Twrp file browser deleted it and kept it deleted. The only thing I don't like about twrp is the system date and time being way off.
Edit: Lol. I've edited like 5 times because I keep wanting to add more info. Also, twrp doesn't take ages to fix permissions. As long as cwm takes, I can just do it manually

I've been on 2.4.0 and 2.4.4, and only had to do backups but haven't tried to restore yet, so after hearing all the war stories, I went back to 2.3.1.

UPDATE: I just upgraded from 2.3.1 to 2.5.0, performed wipes, a backup and a restore and all went perfectly smooth. The only issue was the time was 2 hours behind what it should have been for US central, so I selected 2 hours ahead and chose military time (my preference) and I'm happy.

Ok, I've tried several different roms and I always back up. I've used Oudhs, Clocworkmod and TWRP. No matter which one I back up with I never have any luck on restore. They all seem to restore ok but I get stuck in boot loops everytime. Factory reset doesn't help. Wiping caches don't help. This is just beginning to really drive me nuts. I don't really mind having to reinstall everything but jeez I just wish I knew what the deal was. I never had trouble on my Motorola Defy or my Galaxy S2 but I sure can't seem to get anywhere on the S4

It happens sometimes to me. When I get stuck after restoring nandroid, I get back into recovery and reflash the kernel and it boots the device. I am using philz recovery and its been working great.

Never used philz and never thought of just reflashing the kernel. I may try that though. Now to find the kernel. I should mention that I end up using Odin to reflash stock. Then I root and then custom recovery. That boots fine and for the most part all I'm ever doing is trying to restore a 4.4 rom I backed up.
Flashing a kernel worked. lol my phone doesn't think it's the stock kernel but it booted at least.

I do find this interesting. I would think when you restore a nandroid backup that it would restore the kernel that was with the rom you are restoring. I guess this isn't the case?

Using the latest clockwork has always worked for me.

I've had Rom Manager Premium since my Defy days. I'm a firm believer in it. I was just surprised I would have to reflash a kernel after restoring a rom.

I use OUDHs Touch recovery v1.0.3.3 in conjunction with Rom Manager and I have NEVER had that problem. Also, when I use Rom Manager to "Back Up Current Rom" I can NAME the backup file, and it goes into the recovery and uses the filename I have already typed in and it's a seamless operation. Even using restore via Rom Manager works seamlessly and it has NEVER balked on me.
The only time I had a problem was once using My Backup Pro and trying to do an on-line system backup. MMS, SMS, Call Log has always been absolutely perfect! No out of sequence messages, and all the pictures are restored correctly too!

BTW, I am on a Stock 4.2.2 with the latest M919UVUFNB4 (modem.bin) Flashed for the radio and it's reception qualities are better than it's ever been before!
