AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III - Touch Recovery

I know this might be a stupid question but I was wondering if they have a version of touch recovery for the AT&T SGS 3. I have seen the sprint one but was uncertain if the AT&T had one please if anyone knows can you point me in the right direction. Thank you for your help on this I really appreciate it!!

If you install Goo Manager from the play store, you can install TWRP, which is a touch recovery. As far as CWM goes, Koush had released a touch version of CWM version 6, but it was buggy and he pulled it. He'll have another one up for us soon. My suggestion is to stick with CWM. After the initial backup, subsequent ones just fly.

Hey thank you i will do that but i was just wondering, thank you for the response.

I personally use cwm 5.8.4.5. Which is also touch. But my biggest reason is because its the only one with external access. I prefer my backups and ROMs on external.

TWRP has external SD ability. Much better than CWM IMHO.

I did not know that. I never switched over because the backups wernt compatible and I didn't want to lose them.

A couple weeks ago, I would have agreed with you. Then I upgraded to CWM 6.something. First impression was shaky. That first nandroid took over 20 minutes. But all subsequent backups take less than five and can be done straight from Rom Manager. Choose backup in RM, click OK, and it reboots to recovery, does a nandroid, then reboots the phone...hands free. The first nandroid backs everything up to a blobs folder. Subsequent backups only backup what has been changed...so very speedy.
Also, I can format /data in CWM. TWRP would always fail...but I do miss the touch interface of TWRP.

What he said. Tried TWRP back when it came out and was not pleased. Flashing was a chore with them. Don't know if it has changed. CMW is the king IMHO. Miss the touch part but it will come when its ready. Stick with what's tried and true. Is my opinion.

A backup in twrp for me takes about 130 seconds to back up a tw rom, less for aosp roms. Not sure why your backups take so long. Been using twrp for the past year about and I see no reason to go back. Zip que, the gui, the organization are all much better in twrp in my opinion. Of course everyone's opinion differs but that's my 2 cents.

I agree with this. Being able to flash the rom and gapps at once is pretty sweet. Plus Rom Manager seems to cause problems on roms. Of course I know you don't need Rom Manager to have CWM.

twrp without a doubt.

I always ran cwm on my other phones so when I bought this one I went straight to cwm. Then I heard about twrp and tried it out. I will never go back. Twrp now the only recovery I will flash.

Thanks so much for all the replies! I've rooted several GS3 for friends and coworkers and left CWM since they wont ever go in and use it anyways (they all wanted the free hotspot lol) but I finally made the jump back to android since I got an iPhone 4s when it came out for Sprint and followed your advise to use TWRP recovery. Hopefully it will not be a problem if I decide to start messing around with Cyanogen based ROMs for the GS3.

I used to be on CM or any other AOSP ROMs while using a themed TWRP v2.2.2.0 and had no issues

I never understood this question. Best for what? Flashing zips every once in a while? They both do that. What do you want your recovery to do that one or the other do not do? Try them both and see which one appeals to your sense of what's best.

Did you delete .android_secure from internal sd? I had problems till I did that. Also:
QUESTION: Why are the backups size soo small now compared to the previous cwm backups?
ANSWER: Basically on the new cwm all the data is stored in a blobs folder in the clockworkmod folder. The backups folder now doesnt hold the actual data and instead the system and data files contain links to the files in the blobs folder (with the hash of the file as its filename). When you perform another backup only the changes have to be added so it performs incremental backups instead of full backups everytime. You can still flash different roms and back them up as any new data is stored in the blobs folder with the links in the backup folder. Several backups can share the same blobs file so over several backups the total file size of all the backups will be much much smaller. When you delete a backup via cwm you can then free space of the blob files that are no longer needed to keep everything tidy and make sure that no files are stored that arent referenced to any backup. If you don't free the space then any unused files will automatically be deleted when the next backup is performed.

Alright....so alittle history. kc_exactly is to blame and to thank for this. He just got me thinking. Especially with people starting to test the JB port from houstonn. Which only flashes with CWM.
Disclaimer: You do this at your own risk!! Can't blame anybody but yourself if it messes things up!
I installed sk8erwitskil's Touch CWM 6.0.2.7 v14.4.7 from the ATT forums here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34567118&postcount=1.
I wanted to see if it would work as kc had said in a post earlier. And it did and does!!! CWM backup works using .tar. I haven't tried dedup yet.
So what's the purpose of this post you ask? Well, from what I've found out so far, we can install CWM, create a backup using .tar which is default, and restore with it. In "mount and storage" I formated system, data, cache. In advanced, I formated dalvic cache. Pretty much wiping out the phone and it restored just fine. Actually 4 times so far.
So, and again, part of this has been said by kc_exactly, if you keep TWRP, AND CWM6027 recoveries, your ROM of choice, and backups in both TWRP and CWM on your Internal storage you'll be able to bounce back and forth testing the JB port or whatever else will require CWM.
I've done this multiple times now and it's worked everytime!!!

reboot to recovery and make a CWM backup using .tar
That's it!!
Now each time you want to use a different recovery, just install it, reboot to recovery and restore your backups.
Maybe this is old news, or even a "No sh*t Sherlock" thing. But our CWM had too many issues, and I'm really liking sk8erwitskil's Touch version. And it seems to be working well. I was in CWM for at least 10min straight and it never got hot.
It does have somewhat of a learning curve, so make sure you read sk8's instuctions on the first 2 posts.

Right now I'm in flashaholics heaven. I have a TWRP ICS backup, a CWM ICS backup, and a CWM JELLYBEAN backup!! I'm able to play with whatever blows up my skirt. OK pants.
To all the *****y posts about this phone not going anywhere? Stay away!! We have a hellava DEV crew that is moving right along. And I'm lovin it!!!

what i did was after i flashed jelly bean and restored my apps and stuff, i re installed twrp and made a backup so i never have to switch from twrp to cwm.

If I'm reading the thread correctly, the idea is that you make a backup including the recovery so you can switch back and forth at will.

You are correct. It's been working great for me so far. I'll bet I've restored over 20 times now and it's worked great. I've put it through all its paces and it's worked fine. I've tested and played with houstonn JB and I gotta say I really like JB!
So from what I can tell, we can use this recovery, and do whatever we want. Play with JB for a while, then switch back to ICS.

This is an older recovery. And the wifi has to do with the ROM, more than likely. Go to the TWRP thread or the root guide, under Working Recoveries. There you'll find the newest recoveries. KK included.
Then go to the ROM thread that you flashed and your answer is probably there. If not, ask there.

Phone won't boot into recovery?

Hi guys, so I was using wicked ROM, whenever I tried to boot into recovery, it just rebooted back to system. Odin'ed back to stock, flashed twrp through goo manager app, but still no use. Any help greatly appreciated

What methods have you tried?
adb reboot recovery is the easiest way to get to recovery
Maybe try flashing CWM, seeing if that works, and then flashing TWRP (I've never flashed TWRP through Goo Manager so I don't know how that works)?
If you don't have adb set up, get quick boot from market and try recovery through that.
If that doesn't work, I honestly don't know. I'm assuming you've done the power off then volume up+home+power at the same time trick already.

With the goo app, I can boot directly into recovery, but my issue is that I get to the Recovery's splash screen, it hangs there for a second and immediately reboots back to system. I'm thinking to get the stock recovery back and try again I'm really not sure what the Hecks going on

I would highly recommend putting TWRP back on there. The CWM was more for testing... people have reported issues using CWM with certain ROMs. Glad you were able to get CWM on though.

There are a number of ROMs that do not support CWM so that statement is false. FreeGS3 loses update functionality, for example.
Also, there have been complaints in the case of CWM touch of it being too easy to wipe your entire device.
Not to mention there is no Goo Manager functionality without TWRP as well.
Lots of benefits of TWRP versus CWM. I used CWM for years then had to switch to a modified TWRP for my MAXX and was more than happy when I found out the SGS3 used TWRP as well (although I wish we had the ROM slots like the MAXX though - that was actually cool)

The statement is not false. I think FreeGS3 hasn't been updated for 4.5 months? Maybe not the best example. And I still think you should use as few automated tools as possible where flashing is concerned (Goo/ROM Manager).
It can be easy to wipe the wrong partition in CWM, if you are careless or illiterate. In the 6 months that I've used it (nearly every day), I have never once wiped the wrong partition, or my entire device. Never had a backup that wouldn't restore.
I like some of what TWRP offers. But I still experience showstopping bugs with it on my device. At this time, the devs are unable to track down the cause of the problems.

Don't get me wrong, I've used CWM on many devices for years and even have a premium license for ROM Manager but I've seen a number of ROMs explicitly say not to use CWM, FreeGS3 was just the first that came to mind. I don't flash often because quite frankly, I have no problems with Wicked v8 and see no reason to switch to anything else.
And I am neither careless nor illiterate but I have accidentally borked things using CWM before in the past (it was a modified CWM Touch recovery) and I was not happy.
I think most of the complaints about CWM these days though come from CWM Touch, not regular CWM. Sorry TWRP has issues for you.

OK, so I'm getting a new issue, I changed to AOKP and I had problems with the ROM saying I needed to wipe data, I did, the issue persisted for few reboots, now apps won't install, and for some reason the /data folder still displays apps from my previous ROM ugh I don't know what's happening
Oh and for some reason the app exchange service kept force closing

Which recovery? Try erasing data, cache, and system three times each and reinstalling the ROM... If that doesn't work you might consider doing a back up of everything internally stored on your phone and then wiping the internal storage entirely and starting over.

I tried. I think for some reason, the recovery isn't wiping data, even though it says so. I'm using twrp
Managed to install apps through the play website, still no go with the play store app though

Hmmm... Have you tried doing it through CWM? Its starting to sound like your partitions are messed up.

I tried while I was in twrp, it failed, something about a an error "failed to chmod data/data/ email.apk" (not exactly like that)

TWRP Problem!

Hi, So when I tried to open up twrp recovery, it wouldnt open....it would just stay at the logo and blink every now.and then....So I used oden and installed cwm over twrp and it was fine....I didnt like cwm so I went back to twrp..... it works fine and I can do everything EXCEPT some files are inaccessible and every time I flash something,it works but also gives me the error measages in the image I posted... does anyone know how to fix this?

I had the same exact problem a couple days ago. I fixed it by going Into goo manager and re flashing a new TWRP. I did it on Mobile Data, worked fine!

Go back to 2.3.3.0. Search for the flashables ones. Since 2.4.2.1 TWRP have a lot of issues.

Is there any reason people don't talk about CWM around here? I've been using different versions of cwm touch and twrp ... And I'm honestly pretty happy with cwm.
Why does it appear that people avoid talking about cwm? ... If indeed it works as well as it seems to me that it does?

One reason is that a lot of people think it's better and recommend it to others. I used cwm on my old evo and was going to when I got my s3, but most people and roms were recommending twrp. I've been using it and have tried out cwm as well. For me, at least it hasn't been problematic, but I don't download them through the goo manager. As I feel like I have less control over what I'm getting (I don't even know what version I'm getting until after I download it). That, and I just don't trust the phone to download without errors even when on Wi-Fi.

I just actually switched to cwm a couple days ago because twrp had been giving me backup and restore problems.. everything twrp can do cwm does also, and it seems to be faster backing up and restoring also, but that might just be placebo... devs recommend twrp because that is what their Rom/kernel/mod was tested with... 99% of the time cwm will work just fine also

Actually, having used both, I think TWRP had been the better of the two because of the ease of naming your nandroids and the fact that backups in TWRP don't take up so much space as the CWM backups do. Have you seem the crazy Blobs folder in CWM? I like backing stuff up to the PC, but the CWM backups made that process extremely painful. I don't know what happened to make TWRP so unreliable recently, but I just noticed a newer version is out: 2.5.0.0

There's nothing bad about CWM, but is 2013 and you can't rename your nands which is very important(not necesary) in a phone which date as 1970. Also the touch version looks like a '90 recovery.
But if you want a issues free TWRP go back to 2.3.3.0.

One reason is that a lot of people think it's better and recommend it to others. I used cwm on my old evo and was going to when I got my s3, but most people and roms were recommending twrp. I've been using it and have tried out cwm as well. For me, at least it hasn't been problematic, but I don't download them through the goo manager. As I feel like I have less control over what I'm getting (I don't even know what version I'm getting until after I download it). That, and I just don't trust the phone to download without errors even when on Wi-Fi.

If you update from goo manager, a pop up will tell you what version you are about to install beforehand. Also the webpage that it takes you to in order to start the auto download also states the name of the .IMG which also indicates version. I know what you mean about trusting downloads from the phone though. I personally think that is the reason a lot of people have issues with twrp. I've always updated to the latest twrp and flash almost daily, but have never had to switch versions because of bugs. All versions have ran perfect for me.

I've used both for quite a while. I used to only use cwm for the longest but decided to try out twrp because of those ridiculous blobs! What's with that? So I decided to try twrp and I've stayed because of all the little features like a warnings before you wipe things you shouldn't, option to flash more than one zip at once, option to clear cache and dalvik right after flashing, etc... Plus there are some pretty major features that get overlooked. Like the built in file browser. I installed miui once and it created a folder I could not delete and keep deleted. Every time I would reboot, it would come back. Twrp file browser deleted it and kept it deleted. The only thing I don't like about twrp is the system date and time being way off.
Edit: Lol. I've edited like 5 times because I keep wanting to add more info. Also, twrp doesn't take ages to fix permissions. As long as cwm takes, I can just do it manually

I've been on 2.4.0 and 2.4.4, and only had to do backups but haven't tried to restore yet, so after hearing all the war stories, I went back to 2.3.1.

UPDATE: I just upgraded from 2.3.1 to 2.5.0, performed wipes, a backup and a restore and all went perfectly smooth. The only issue was the time was 2 hours behind what it should have been for US central, so I selected 2 hours ahead and chose military time (my preference) and I'm happy.
