I recently found someone who can S-OFF my VZW One for 60$ or so. Only problem is they have to open my phone and according to the email I got, there will be "signs of light scratches" on the aluminum due to how easy it is to scratch and "signs of entry" due to prying.
Should I bother sending my phone in and get it back scuffed up or just wait for a software based S-OFF?

sounds like they have to take the phone apart to get go some things.
(based upon S-OFF method on the Rezound using a paper clip_
but that had a removable battery. so idk man
I would do this if S-OFF doesn't come in like 4-6 months

I think what you should do is borrow the $60 from a friend and if you don'd like the job the guy did, or you don't like the phone itself, sell it with the S-OFF and pay your friend back and make a profit. That's what a friend of mine said he might do wile we were discussing this situation in a Skype call.

Lol Ryan
Anyway, he's had the phone for a bit you know, he likes it enough. What he's mainly concerned about is physical damage or paying and then having a free software tool released a week later.
I'm still thinking it's better to wait since you want a stock room anyway, and you know you can wait and save money, too.
Besides, the One is a great phone stock, anyway.

Only question is "when". Not even the S4 has an unlocked bootloader and that's been out for a while :/.
I was hoping that root bounty thread would at least bring a out of it but that died out quick.

The only thing is you have to think: is this really important to me? Will I ever regret this? The bloatware seems to be under control for the most part and the rooted apps you could get aren't life changing. To be honest, rooting is pretty lame. It's exciting until you do it. It's neat and all but I don't think it's worth $60...buyers remorse always sucks more than Verizon's ROM.

Its called Jtagging and is not new. Basically they are taking the phone apart, and reflashing it. Totally possible. Problem here is the htc one is notoriously hard to take apart without damage, expect damage to the device if you go this route.

Haha, I saw this. The review from iFixIt or whatever its called where they tear down the phone piece by piece and rate by repairability. It rated, on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being easy to repair.....drumroll.........a 1, lol. Because of how hard it is to disassemble. Apparently HTC has this sucker bonded together quite well.
In any event, you have a HUGE factor to consider here with the jtagging. As much as I'm a proponent of s-off, it only benefits you if its a public s-off method that everyone has (being developers). Say you send in your phone, get s-off, then what? Nobody else is even unlocked, except very few of us. Its the same instance as we're in right now, a couple of us have unlocked devices, but there's only 2/3 devs, and only a handful of people who can use the roms. Snail racing, lolz.
Honestly, I'd wait till s-off becomes public through an exploit or something, otherwise you have nothing.
There's also the JavaCard S-Off exploit which has been mentioned a few times on the One forums. Haven't heard from anyone who has actually done it though, so not much else I can say on it.

Actually just talked with some friends and we might be getting a java card with 250 or so uses in the next 2 weeks or something. Apparently it works on any 1.54 HTC phone so I'm assuming the VZW One is included .

What state are you in? If semi local I'd pay for the service and go to you.
I would in fact most likely buy one myself if you can direct me to this card.
Couldn't this theoretically mean a dev could run code through the SIM slot if it were programmed with the HTCDev unlock bin? I assume there must be a way for a user to program their own SIM code and unlock/S-off that way and revert back to signed code after the process. (I'm thinking in flow charts as I have yet to do any more than minor app development on Android, just trying to help)

Mail it is, though I am still reluctant knowing so few have the exploit so it's not like many developers have eyes on ROMs atm.

Anybody have any ways to make my Evo faulty???? I'm trying to have it replaced and need a good way to have it replaced under the manufacture warranty. I know this sounds wrong but I am in a timeframe where I would be able to replace it with the S2, seeing that Sprint has the release set to late July early August. If this is "bad" question to ask I will drop the post if I start getting negative response..
Their only going to replace it with an EVO, you'll still have to buy the sg2. So sell the EVO and use that money to buy sg2
brought to you by the little voices in my head
If your within the 30 days, all you have to do is pay the $35 exchange fee, otherwise you have to buy one outright.

Same reason modding your car voids your dealer warranty, but is still legal. They don't want to fix your fk ups, but you can fix them yourself.

As to hacking your phone...I can hack my phone all I want as I own the hardware and a license for the software. The only thing that is illegal is changing the ESN on your phone.

A warranty is not law. A warranty is an agreement between two parties (you and Sprint or HTC) that says if there is a manufacturing defect in the phone, they will fix it or replace it within a specified timeframe, provided you follow some conditions set out in the warranty.
Just like cars...did you know if you put an aftermarket part on your vehicle and the vehicle malfunctions, the manufacturer can void your warranty since it isn't one of their parts, regardless if it caused the malfunction? That doesn't make it illegal to do it, it just means if your vehicle breaks, you're on your own.
Same with the phone.
I think we've covered the legalities of hacking your phone. As long as you aren't doing anything to obtain a service free that otherwise would be paid for you can do whatever you want. *cough* wireless tether *cough* (which is legal to have but not use lol)
As far as trashing it..... throw it in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Call in and say it was fried when you woke up.
I received a CLNR replacement from VZW this weekend due to massive banding on my original device. Take it out inspect it for scratches, fire up the phone, check out the screen for banding etc. No scratches, screen has no banding/dead pixels and I assume all is well! Much to my dismay when I try to DL apps, surf the net or stream Netflix , make calls etc. the phone cannot keep a signal to save it's life. It has full 4G signal and after I access data or make a call, the bars are gone and there's a x in the signal bars. When this occurs, I cannot makes calls or access data etc etc. When I switch from LTE/CDMA to CDMA only I have a stable data connection, and calls can be made etc. Would I need to switch out the entire main motherboard or would I just need to swap out the antenna? I've been searching around for an answer and cannot seem to find one. Checked out a few tear downs and it seems simple enough to remove. I do have experience tearing apart and rebuilding so I do not see any issues. Thank you for any input!
If you got a CLNR and its faulty, get another replacement. Why would you try to open it and fix it, potentially breaking and voiding warranty, when you can just get it replaced for free?

Well if you're so loaded, I'm surprised you dealt with CLNR in the first place... why not just buy a new phone every time you get a scratch on the screen there moneybags?
I dealt with it at Sprint and after 4 replacements I left my contract with them. I know it sucks, but seriously choosing to rip your phone apart and replace an antenna (which may or may not fix the problem) when you can have them replace the phone free makes absolutely no sense to me. CLNR sucks, but you're bound to get an acceptable one eventually, or you should be able to complain after so many replacements and get an actually new device.

Well it's kinda hard to tell through words cause of lack of tone. If it was just a joke I apologize. Really wasn't trying to brag either. Just making a point if I derp I can recover.
So, since Sonic has this javacard that is able to get s-off for us on the HTC One, is anyone still looking at getting bootloader unlock / root / s-off in any other fashion? Or has this line of thinking been dropped all together? As in devs thinking it's not possible? Just curious as I would really like to get it done, but can't, because of my job, be without my phone. If it all comes to that, I will figure a way to get my phone to him. I have not pledged anything as of yet as I was waiting to find out what was going to happen.

a dev just got enough donations to get the htc one and is going to work on a software exploit. Apparently the new hboot (1.54?) is so far locked down across carriers/ countries so hopefully, there will be plenty of devs working on this in the future.
Though I probably will get impatient and mail mine off in a week...
I personally don't think anyone would start working on this until the 4.3 update is out. With a new update, there could be a new hboot and different exploits.
I am a pretty new dev but I have not abandoned finding an exploit. Be patient, we will find one eventually.
I was just concerned that it had kinda fallen to the wayside since there is currently another way to get s-off. I hadn't seen anything in the last few days about finding a software exploit and it got me thinking about it. I never made a pledge in that thread due to that line of thinking. Figured if someone gets us root / unlocked I would send to them directly.

This is true, but the bounty still re-mains for whomever cracks the code.
If you pledged and then did S-OFF with Sonic, your pledge still counts, and I feel most members will honor their word.
So one would hope anyway.

I think it will be, I am a bit weary sending my $600 phone without insurance from NY to CO, but still worth it for me.
(does the $15 include the $600 insurance for the phone when he ships it back? or if it's lost or stolen on way back to you, what happens?)
I was hoping I could get my phone out today, but it looks like business calls again and can't be without it.
I am HTC Dev unlocked so I am not in NEED necessarily of S-OFF, just would like to have it to poke around.
I am going to lay low let those who really need it, the ones who got stuck not being able to do HTC Dev, then if credits are still there I will send it out. No need for me to be greedy and use a credit when it's not needed, yet anyway, I really want S-OFF, but I think others deserve it first since I am already rooted.

I don't think that's the full back piece either. It's just the front. You would still have to get the entire back piece in red.
I can assure you that Verizon will likely not be refurbishing this device. Returns to HTC for Refurbishment, until about probably 6+ months then Verizon gets tech tools and guides to train personnel on disassembly and reassembly.
I used to be a technician at Sprint and this device does not open easily at all. Not compared to the DNA or 8x

so basically if you get a refurb after 6+ months, your probably getting a ****ty one?
and before that, it will be HTC that does the refurbishments?
that is reassuring as far as refurbs go, for the firsrt 5-6 months, but after that.

I was just waiting for his hand to slip or for him to grab the razor blade too hard. Now that would be a whole different kinda video.
Are you sure all the screw holes on the red plate will be the same for the Verizon variant?

So, I bought the red case, it came in on Friday afternoon and I was about to get started. Then, I noticed that the black rubber was just a painted line that was rubbing off. WTF? Looks like I saved myself a lot of time and effort on this one.
Hey guys, first. Thank you for visiting the post and bring a little valuable knowledge.
I have a HTC ONE M7 VERIZON - currently ROOT with WeakSauce2
There is a way to get free S-OFF - other than SUNSHINE ...
android version 4.4.3 - attached screenshot so you can see the version of software.
Not possible in the current version, there is a way back to the factory system?
Thank You.
Only way to downgrade is to have s-off. For version 5.28.605.2 the only way to get unlocked and s-off is Sunshine, or pay for someone with a java card to s-off.

It is a bit ridiculous that they're taking advantage of the situation though. Verizon shouldn't be allowed to lock phones down so thoroughly that a phone model that specifically is supposed to be supported by the company's own official "developer program" is actually locked out as it is. These people are taking advantage of the fact that Verizon has done this to make quite a lot of cash. And if you have to get a different phone or something, you can't just "uninstall Sunshine" or something and reuse it. Nope. You get to buy it again. They don't even license it to one person, it's only licensed to one specific device. Simply put, they're taking advantage of everyone and getting away with it to make quite a lot of money on the process and everyone seems to be ok with that.
Now don't get me wrong here. I am not saying they shouldn't be allowed to make money. I'm sure they did a decent amount of work to find and utilize the new exploit(s) they are using and not sharing. To some extent, yeah, they should get money. Though I'm not convinced that donations alone wouldn't have been quite sufficient to more than cover their time and efforts with some small profit along the way (there are a lot of M7 users stuck with Verizon after all plus there can be advantages to Sunshine even when not on Verizon) I'll allow that they've a right to ask for money for this is general. My problem is the fact that they do that one device only for $25. That's a lot of money to run an exploit on a device one time and never again. A one user license for $25 would be a lot more fair and reasonable at least, but really I can't see why it shouldn't be more on the order of $5 or so anyway. Heck, let's say $10. But $25? They have us backed in a corner and they know it.

But wait - - someone did a sh--load of work at the risk of nice phones to create an optional work-around to allow tinkerers to play with their phones.
Why shouldn't the guys who figured out what we can't figure out be paid ??????????
I tried to get you preemptively on that. Read my edit. Sorry, it took a bit before I realized someone was going to think I was saying they shouldn't get paid at all. Simply put, I'm not against them profiting at all. I'm against the way they're taking advantage of people. I do stick to my statement that donations alone would have been sufficient though. There are a lot of people who would have been really grateful for the exploits if posted and would have donated if they asked nicely (and maybe even if they didn't ask...)

"These people" don't give a crap about what you or what Verizon does.
There is no HTC or dev program that allows you to s-off your device.
Nobody is taking advantage of you, they are offering you a service.
Either accept their service and pay what they ask for it, or don't.
But please stop this self entitled attitude that gets us nowhere and causes the few exploits and devs that make them to disappear completely.
Don't like it? Buy yourself a Java card for a few hundred bucks, or an iPhone.
If folks like these guys didn't go through burning up devices for our benefit, you would have zero options.
If they depend on the general public to be generous with donations, when giving it away for free, they would be sadly disappointed, trust me on this one...it happens a lot less then you might imagine.
People nowadays are far too content to take whatever they can and if nobody makes them give back, they won't think twice about it.
So, I really suggest ending this now, as this won't end well for you and certainly won't change anything for the better.
Only effect it could possibly have is to jeopardize your xda membership, reputation, and potentially drive away the people who worked so hard on your only real available option for s-off.
See, this is what I don't get. People will defend this sort of thing fighting tooth and nail for them even to the point of flaming and insulting others. It's silly. Ultimately things like this being locked behind a pay wall hurts the community as a whole.

I'm guessing you misunderstood what I was saying? I'm specifically referring to the official HTC developer program by which one can enter and get an unlock token to officially unlock their HTC devices: http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/
Verizon is the only one that chooses to disallow its users from doing this and I'm only saying that this creates the situation being discussed. If, for example, there were no service in which one could not unlock their device via the official program and the only point of Sunshine was to avoid going through all that and to make it possible to effectively warranty voiding checks, then that alone might be a valid reason for it to cost. (And I personally am ok with going through the official HTC program and losing warranty officially. That was never the issue for me.)

I think you didn't really understand what I was saying. Basically Verizon has created a situation where people have no choice but to use exploits when they shouldn't have to. This, in itself, is already a not OK situation, but there's not much we can do about it short of using a different service (and some of us need various things like a particular plan/area/whatever.) The people behind Sunshine found a new exploit that works on the latest stuff (and claim it's hardware and unpatchable.) Great. But, they don't release it to the public. They keep it locked away behind a pay wall (and I'm sure the exact workings of it are encrypted and etc so people can't just reverse engineer the software easily or something.) Not just a pay wall though. They charge quite a lot for a single device. Then they don't let a user use what they paid for again ever. Nope. You get to unlock one device and that's it. Hence "taking advantage." They know we're backed up against the wall.
Either except their service and pay what they ask for it, or don't.

Who said self-entitled? I didn't say they owe it to me or something. I said this is ultimately bad for the community and the community shouldn't be happy with it and that they shouldn't charge so much for it or limit it so much. This is more a business discussion if anything. They don't owe it to me or anything, but they are still taking advantage of the situation. Essentially, it's extortion.

Oh good, then you do understand.... :good:
Good luck to you.
Before this exploit, there was firewater, moonshine, rumrunner for certain aged HTC devices, two worked on this phone. These were made by the same team that did Sunshine. They never got the income back via donations to pay for the countless bricked phones getting the exploit to work (yes, this type of exploit permanently damaged their test phones at $700 a pop.) This is why they had to resort to charging since the donations didn't make the lost money back.
Before the exploits worked on our phones, we HAD to pool money together and have a trusted member keep the java card, and pay him shipping and a fragment of the cost of the card. He made no money off this service either.
Do not sully and degrade and berate the payment wall. You bought a Verizon phone. A carrier who HATES their "customers" rooting their phones. Call Verizon support and say your phone is rooted and see their response. If you wanted an HTC phone that does work with htcdev, buy a different variant, or get the last Verizon model that did work, the Rezound.
Sunshine was made with the idea to s-off already rooted phones, unlocking Verizon variants is a side effect they don't put on the priority list. If it happens, it happens.
Edit: quick math for you. Let's say they had 20 failed attempts... For ONE device, if all 20 bricked the phone, that is $14000 $25 is reasonable given how many devices it works for and how much was spent to get it to work.

Well I never heard any dev that locked their phones on failed attempts to find exploits. Doesn't that one dev that does the exploits work for HTC or Verizon and his job is to find these exploits? I guess I see nothing wrong with charging to get your phone unlocked and rooted. Maybe the price be a little less but I doubt he made a lot of money unlocking peoples phones. If you don't want to pay for having your phone unlocked then look at getting s nexus 6 off T-Mobile. Everything works on Verizon's network and you never have to worry about having a locked boot loader.

No, beaups nor jacase work for Verizon. They frequent the blackhat convention. Most exploits they do they either sell to the bug bounty or give to the community depending on certain factors. They are not on either company's payroll.
