[Q] Trash my Evo..... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anybody have any ways to make my Evo faulty???? I'm trying to have it replaced and need a good way to have it replaced under the manufacture warranty. I know this sounds wrong but I am in a timeframe where I would be able to replace it with the S2, seeing that Sprint has the release set to late July early August. If this is "bad" question to ask I will drop the post if I start getting negative response..

Their only going to replace it with an EVO, you'll still have to buy the sg2. So sell the EVO and use that money to buy sg2
brought to you by the little voices in my head

If your within the 30 days, all you have to do is pay the $35 exchange fee, otherwise you have to buy one outright.

Same reason modding your car voids your dealer warranty, but is still legal. They don't want to fix your fk ups, but you can fix them yourself.

Dude just brick it. And I mean fully brick it where it won't turn on, charge, recognize usb or anything. This way the techs have no way of knowing It's rooted and the phone looks like its just faulty. I'm not telling you how to brick it though, you have to search the forums for that. Happy hunting

As to hacking your phone...I can hack my phone all I want as I own the hardware and a license for the software. The only thing that is illegal is changing the ESN on your phone.

A warranty is not law. A warranty is an agreement between two parties (you and Sprint or HTC) that says if there is a manufacturing defect in the phone, they will fix it or replace it within a specified timeframe, provided you follow some conditions set out in the warranty.
Just like cars...did you know if you put an aftermarket part on your vehicle and the vehicle malfunctions, the manufacturer can void your warranty since it isn't one of their parts, regardless if it caused the malfunction? That doesn't make it illegal to do it, it just means if your vehicle breaks, you're on your own.
Same with the phone.

I think we've covered the legalities of hacking your phone. As long as you aren't doing anything to obtain a service free that otherwise would be paid for you can do whatever you want. *cough* wireless tether *cough* (which is legal to have but not use lol)
As far as trashing it..... throw it in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Call in and say it was fried when you woke up.

Manufacturers Warranty.

I have the Samsung Epic 4G for Sprint. I've had it for a month and a half, maybe 2 months now? Lets say I run into a problem or something one of these days and my phones LEGIT bricks. No download, recovery, charging, anything. I remember with T-Mobile and HTC when I had my G1, I had a one-year warranty. one time my phone bricked and they replaced it for me free of charge. Do I have that with Sprint and Samsung for my Epic 4G? Just want to make sure. Thanks.
as long as you have insurence you should have no problem i am going on my 4th phone.

also you can go online to samsung.com and register there i did will all of my phones, tv and mp3 player and the spare battery charger sorry about the first post of mine being way off ur topic well i guess not way off. but still not the answer you wanted. after it is register you can submit a repair for the phone.
I may be wrong here but I believe you could add TEP and once it has been 30 days then you would be able to get your phone replaced if you haven't already reported your problem to Sprint. I think TEP has to be on your plan for 30 days before they will let you use it. Its not like you are just trying to get a different phone because yours won't allow 1.4 overclocking. It sounds like you are having legitimate issues....so don't flame me Sprint employees about working the system

rooting a phone that was found, no it wasnt stolen

I have a phone I acquired from my work, no its not stolen its been sitting in my office months, my question can I root it and port a number to it if it has been locked, our if out hasn't been would there be any issues I may run into
how exactly is that not stealing if its been sitting in your office for months? and what are you talking about Sprint?
Galaxy Nexus isn't on Sprint yet.
I work at a bar we have phones from a year ago they are lost and not reclaimed, hence not stolen eventually we just toss them unless you have some pertinent feedback how bout not wasting my time

Here's some pertinent feedback for you: regardless of your standard practice or how long the property has been there, once you take it, it is stolen, you have committed a crime, and depending on your state laws and the value of the phone, that crime could be a felony.
There are legal requirements for handling abandoned property. Just doing what you want with it is not one them. You may find that all you have to do is run an ad in a local paper and that if no one answers, you can claim the property.
GR
lol relax detectives...no need to accuse of felonies. but just go to the carrier who sells the phone and ask your questions. say you found it and would like to use it as just something to mess with if your not activating it. and if they have to take it. so be it.

That sounds reasonable. If nothing else they should be able to tell you the proper procedure for being able to claim the property as yours, if there is one.

car ran over my phone.. advice?

advice needed..
long story short.
i have insurance. my phone got run over while i was biking and the screen is shattered and the screen will not display ANYTHING but the phone actually still turns on and lights up and i can odin and all that.
so is there anyway i can go about getting the phone replaced WITHOUT paying $100 to assurion?
any advice?
once again, phone seems to actually work fine but it is not functional in that the screen remains black and will not display anything, so a replacement is needed..
EDIT:
also phone is rooted so if i took it into a sprint store, should i odin stock, and if yes wouldn't it then show my odin count @ 1?
would they even bother checking for root if the phone's screen was dead? is there any chance of me getting the phone replaced free of charge or cheaper then via insurance?
1. Get a car.
2. Run over somebody else's phone.
3. Feel better

You pay 10 dollars a month for insurance for these types of problems. If you don't want to use your insurance why pay for it? There is no way around it. No need to Odin anything. Just be happy you had insurance and pay the 100.

I think there's no way around the $100 because its physical damage caused by you.
Root won't matter because its a hardware issue.

You had an accident- insurance is for accidents- they wont be looking for suspicious Roms when a phone looks like it was " run over by a car " ..be glad you have insurance- ask for a new phone- dont settle for a refurb. if you can help it. ( refurbs are usually fixed phones, prior lemons, or returns-) and last thing- cry the blues !!!! get their sympathy- maybe if its a hot sales lady, you might even get her number.... no- but seriously- use a bit of drama to get their compassion....

[Q] HARD BRICKED :( Can I take to Sprint?

Ok so I flashed a ROM for an International Galaxy S3 and I have a Sprint Galaxy S3.
The ROMs I found all being on the same forum really messed with my head...
But it will not do anything. The screen is black. If i plug it in nothing happens. If i press buttons nothing happens.
If I take it to Sprint do you think they will be able to get it to work again?
They won't be able to check if i am rooted since it doesnt show anything...
I already looked at the whole JTAG REPAIRs everywhere and I dont want to pay 60$ to fix my phone if Sprint can do it for free
Also I dont want to buy a USB JIG either.
I got this phone couple months back by the way
Sprint won't do it for Free if you are out of warranty. Maybe $35 with luck, $150 if you have TEP.
But you can try... Play the "it just stop working" game.

The primary option you're looking for is a JTAG repair.
I believe you can purchase the materials yourself to do it, but if I've read correctly, you'd most likely have to solder stuff to other stuff (technical answer, I know!).
If you don't mind paying someone to repair it, you might want to try out Mobile Tech Videos. I haven't used their services personally and their website looks a bit on the low-budget end of the spectrum, but other XDA members have gone to them and they gave them a positive review.

I'm gonna stick with what The Root said, and say the following:
You done messed up, son. You flashed a ROM knowing full well that there was a chance it'd brick your phone. Now it's bricked because you didn't read all the information available to you. To expect Sprint to pay for your mistake is, if I may be frank, irresponsible. I know $60 may be a lot to some people, but you were messing around with a $500 piece of technology. But I'd say it'd be much better to take this situation as a learning experience, and in the future you'll never brick your phone again because you'll make sure to do 3 or 4 google searches and really do your due diligence before flashing something on your phone.

For what it's worth, I just paid the $150 TEP on my phone because I was trying to upgrade my TWRP to 2.4.2.0 and something happened that caused me to brick my phone. It depends. Do you pay the monthly TEP fee for your phone? If you're enrolled in the program (and pay the monthly fee), you can walk into a store and (for most situations) get a new (or most-likely refurbished) phone the same or next day (for the low, low cost of the $150 deductible). Typically no questions asked.

[Q] To S-OFF or not

I recently found someone who can S-OFF my VZW One for 60$ or so. Only problem is they have to open my phone and according to the email I got, there will be "signs of light scratches" on the aluminum due to how easy it is to scratch and "signs of entry" due to prying.
Should I bother sending my phone in and get it back scuffed up or just wait for a software based S-OFF?

I think what you should do is borrow the $60 from a friend and if you don'd like the job the guy did, or you don't like the phone itself, sell it with the S-OFF and pay your friend back and make a profit. That's what a friend of mine said he might do wile we were discussing this situation in a Skype call.

Lol Ryan
Anyway, he's had the phone for a bit you know, he likes it enough. What he's mainly concerned about is physical damage or paying and then having a free software tool released a week later.
I'm still thinking it's better to wait since you want a stock room anyway, and you know you can wait and save money, too.
Besides, the One is a great phone stock, anyway.

Only question is "when". Not even the S4 has an unlocked bootloader and that's been out for a while :/.
I was hoping that root bounty thread would at least bring a out of it but that died out quick.

The only thing is you have to think: is this really important to me? Will I ever regret this? The bloatware seems to be under control for the most part and the rooted apps you could get aren't life changing. To be honest, rooting is pretty lame. It's exciting until you do it. It's neat and all but I don't think it's worth $60...buyers remorse always sucks more than Verizon's ROM.

I don't think I would believe this person unless they were a close personal friend of yours.

Its called Jtagging and is not new. Basically they are taking the phone apart, and reflashing it. Totally possible. Problem here is the htc one is notoriously hard to take apart without damage, expect damage to the device if you go this route.

Haha, I saw this. The review from iFixIt or whatever its called where they tear down the phone piece by piece and rate by repairability. It rated, on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being easy to repair.....drumroll.........a 1, lol. Because of how hard it is to disassemble. Apparently HTC has this sucker bonded together quite well.
In any event, you have a HUGE factor to consider here with the jtagging. As much as I'm a proponent of s-off, it only benefits you if its a public s-off method that everyone has (being developers). Say you send in your phone, get s-off, then what? Nobody else is even unlocked, except very few of us. Its the same instance as we're in right now, a couple of us have unlocked devices, but there's only 2/3 devs, and only a handful of people who can use the roms. Snail racing, lolz.
Honestly, I'd wait till s-off becomes public through an exploit or something, otherwise you have nothing.
There's also the JavaCard S-Off exploit which has been mentioned a few times on the One forums. Haven't heard from anyone who has actually done it though, so not much else I can say on it.

Actually just talked with some friends and we might be getting a java card with 250 or so uses in the next 2 weeks or something. Apparently it works on any 1.54 HTC phone so I'm assuming the VZW One is included .

Is this like the new-age xtc clip?
Speaking of, whatever happened to that thing. I still have one laying around but I haven't seen any new development in a long time.

What state are you in? If semi local I'd pay for the service and go to you.
I would in fact most likely buy one myself if you can direct me to this card.
Couldn't this theoretically mean a dev could run code through the SIM slot if it were programmed with the HTCDev unlock bin? I assume there must be a way for a user to program their own SIM code and unlock/S-off that way and revert back to signed code after the process. (I'm thinking in flow charts as I have yet to do any more than minor app development on Android, just trying to help)

Mail it is, though I am still reluctant knowing so few have the exploit so it's not like many developers have eyes on ROMs atm.
