I got some questions about some stock phones, I know this forum is generally for rooted phones.
I just unrooted my device and ended up with firmware FL04 which is 4.1.1, my wifes phone which has never been rooted is FL24 which is 4.0.?. I see the latest firmware is GB29 and that is supposed to be the update from 4.0 to 4.1. The GB27 update is not available through OTA though, only through kies. I use only Linux machines and kies is not available for Linux.
My first question is when was FL04 releases compared to GB29. I can't find anywhere where FL04 was released.
Also wondering if there is a way to manually update an unrooted phone with my Linux machine, through heimdall or maybe another way.

I think this will start you down the right path.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348392 ...
Easiest way I found to work with this phone under Linux is to simply create a virtual machine with windows xp or even 7 and just use that for any sort of flashing via one clicks or OTA updates.
You can also try to get Kies working under wine but from my experience its more trouble than its worth (which is what lead me to the virtual machine solution)

I dont want to buy windows other wise I would just dual boot. I do have an iMac, so the cheapest option would be to buy mac OSX disc and dual boot on that machine. For now I'm still interested in an option for Linux.

Read.. The post link a sent...ya. My bet is you're missing a step in heimdall..
I started reading it, then decided to re root my phone. Been flashing ROMs trying to find one I like. I had rooted months ago and hadn't switched ROMs for a long time.
I haven't installed heimdall frontend, just command line. So looks like I'll need frontend first.

Well. I looked at it and I dont know which file to download for front-end heimdall. It seems like a lot of work for an unrooted device. I'll probably just root her phone. Its pretty easy from heimdall command line. I tried kobridge's gb27 stock rom today on my phone and it runs pretty smooth. She wont know its rooted and its more updated than what she has. I may keep it too. I dont care for themes or tweaks, just like to remove bloatware.

I'm having an issue with my t989 that has persisted since I stopped using Kang's ROMs and the Bullet Kernel.
After going from the Juggernaut ROM to Darkside's ICS when it came out, my phone started to not be recognized by any computer, be it OSX or Windows. I've tried everything on the PC software side, from clearing Kies and the Samsung Drivers, as well as clearing registry information and re-installing both separately, and this has not helped at all. The windows error is:
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
I don't use antivirus, and I don't use a firewall, suffice to say I'm a programmer and have plenty of experience in doodling with phones, and I'm stumped. I've come to the conclusion that the Bullet Kernel installed from my Juggernaut days is the cause of the issue, as I repeated the process on a friend's device and he has the exact same symptoms.
With this situation, I'm not able to access ODIN to return to complete stock, so I can't flash over the Bullet Kernel. Alongside the USB device not recognized problem, I also was not able to get into ODIN / download mode until I made my own USB Jig to get around it.
Is there any way to get back to the stock kernel without ODIN? Would Mobile Odin Pro work if Chainfire added support for our device? It's really pissing me off as I'm a software developer and can't use my own device to build to.
EDIT: As a note, when moving from Juggernaut / Bullet to Darkside, I flashed the appropriate ICS radio and kernel, but when returning to 2.3.5 stock from Samsung, somehow the Bullet kernel managed to persist.
edit: nvm you answered my question.
Im not aware of a way to unroot without Odin Can you get into recovery?

There is still a way to get back to the Stock ROM ( 2.3.5 ) and Recovery, but the kernel flash was not included with the package:
http://galaxys2root.com/t-mobile-galaxy-s2/how-to-unroot-t-mobile-galaxy-s2-sgh-t989/
This is apparently the "Zedomax" unroot that does not need the ability to hook up to Odin, so needless to say, it's not unrooting that I need, it's getting back to the stock kernel that is the problem.
Obviously now that I'm unrooted, there really isn't a way for me to install Mobile Odin Pro even if I had it. I've been looking how to contact him to request it, because I don't want to be rude and PM him the request when I'm sure that's not the way that respected XDA members would want.
Can I ask why you think the kernel alone isn't being overwritten? That seems odd to me, since every ROM packs its own kernel, and flashing a kernel specifically only replaces the kernel. So if you flash an ICS ROM you're getting an ICS kernel, GB you get a GB kernel, etc. It wouldn't work otherwise. If you haven't done it already, you might want to try Darkside super and cache wipes.

Well, for one, I get a Bullet loading screen... Apparently reading through other threads, it's a known issue that Zedomax's Stock ROM method doesn't include the kernel, which basically means I may have f'ed myself permanently seeing as how I can't get ODIN access. Unfortunately, galaxys2root.com didn't tell people on their site that it didn't include the kernel, so needless to say, I'm never going to that site again and I would advise people not to follow any of their stuff either.
Although it's a small omission, their lack of providing information has just caused me to possibly lose a moddable phone.
EDIT: the threads that I've been reading through are the ones you supplied, RTFOP
So can you not get into download mode or get your computer to recognize your phone in recovery? If you're willing to tinker some you can back track and root and reinstall and overwrite that kernel and then circle back.

Well, to re-hash over what I've said already for clarification's sake:
1. I can get into download / ODIN mode
2. I still CANNOT get my phone to recognize in recovery. I know it's not my PCs, it's the phone, and I suspect the Bullet Kernel as it was not reverted back to the stock kernel when I flash Zedomax.
With that said, I don't see how it's possible for me to root and get CWM seeing as how I'm on stock Recovery (3e), and I can't ODIN. Unless there is a untethered way to root the t989, I think i'm up ****'s creek.
At what point did you lose root access though?

The whole point of flashing Zedomax's .zip is to unroot and go back to stock Samsung 2.3.5.
Just to verify, I downloaded root checker and it states I do not have root access.
So if you can get into Odin with your jig workaround, why can't you load a custom recovery and super user and then run Darkside wipes and install whatever ROM you want?

I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding between you and I. When I say I can get into download / Odin MODE, that means I can force the phone itself into ODIN Mode, but since my computer does not recognize my t989, the ODIN application on my windows box does not recognize the phone, and the ID box does not 'turn yellow' as it should if my phone were recognized by my PC.
So even though my phone is waiting for the ODIN application on my windows to send it commands, I can't send it commands because the application won't recognize the phone.
Thus is my quandary.
Yeah, sorry, I didn't get that. Have you tried plugging it in without the sd card in? It's kind of a long shot, but errors on there might be keeping your computer from communicating with the device, since it seems to be working otherwise. Maybe the jtag repair service through mobile tech videos?

As you suggested, I tried taking out the SD card and that didn't help.
I'm trying to do as much as possible before I try and repair it. I may consider trying for a warranty replacement and take the risk, but I'd like to try everything I can before I take that step, I don't like not being able to fix something =p.

Hi:
I've spent a couple weeks trying to find a solid solution to my issue, and haven't quite gotten it. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction, thank you.
- I have a t999/ t-mobile GS3. I flashed the so-called "leaked OTA 4.1 upgrade" UVDLI3 to it, and I'm not really happy with it.
- I'd like to go to a rooted phone, so I can install AOKP or similar. So I'd like to either root the existing UVDLI3, or downgrade to 4.0.4 so I can use the root script originated on XDA.
- I use a Macintosh computer. I can get access to a PC, but it's a bit dicey if I have to install software and drivers on it. Possible, but not preferable.
Any recommendations to get either rooted or back to 4.0.4? Thank you all very much.
There's an official jellybean release for T-Mobile better than the leak. Not sure what your asking but there's a root66 stock jellybean file you can Odin that has root already.

You need to be rooted in order to use mobile odin
Mobile Odin is a mac users savior!
Jus be careful to never lose root once you've got it.
If you haven't already, I would seriously recommend you get the Pro version for its EverRoot option.

So I tried Mobile Odin, and realized that requires that I be rooted already (thanks also j_smith305). So it's either find a way to root UVDLI3, or downgrade to 4.0.4 and root that. Back to my original issue, I think.
You can install virtual machine on your mac and then install windows on it. You will have odin working on your mac without buying new pc. For free vm just make small research in google. Also you can try using some exe emulator. I think Wine is available for mac. Or make research if there is odin or something like odin for linux. If there is then download some linux (I recommend ubuntu) and install it on usb drive.

I've tried using odin on a virtual machine but I've had problems installing the samsung drivers on it. You can try doing it on bootcamp but I don't know if that'll work since I haven't tried it. So you installed newest FrostyJB? My suggestion is go back to odin and flash root66 4.1.1. You will get less problems with the rom and better battery life. People actualy reported that rom works better if you flash stock 4.1 before.
I'm just saying that so you can avoid some problems related to that and asking unnecessary questions in Frosty thread.

Thanks -- we'll see how it goes. Now that I have the thing rooted and OMP working, it's really easy to switch the ROM up. So far Frosty has worked well, and Root66 looks good too. I'd really like a good AOKP ROM to try out as well. Hope to find one that's reasonably stable.
Been having some issues with my phone, even after performing a few complete system wipes. Read that flashing back to complete stock and doing it all from scratch, root, tasks Rom, gaps, restore, can fix a lot of problems.
I have a MacBook and don't have Windows installed anymore. Is there any way for me to do this easily on my Mac? A guide would be especially appreciate.

I would suggest using mobile Odin. That's how I do it. You just need an app to unzip the rom download, which then gives you a tar file. Do not unzip the tar file. That's the format mobile Odin uses.

Well, after a warrantee replacement that has shipped with 4.1.2 that method is a no-go.

Nope. The flasher is a no-go.
Tries to run as an .exe file and that is a roadblock in OSX. I'm DL'ing a stock injected rom and going to try and run that through Heimdall...sucks all newer replacements have gone to 4.1.2.

I've tried extracting the md5s and I am getting a "missing XML files" prompt no matter which one I use...All it really needs is a .pit file to flash, or hell, even just the recovery.img. Sadly, the macbook refuses to open and separate the packages to let me get at them.
*sign* I hate OSX.
I don't have ... well no Macs. The reason being that Apple limits too much to their own ecosystem. So I can't look at their version of Heimdall Suite. I will play with the Windows version. reading the documentations The file needs firmware.xml to validate the rom. This is the developers way of making Heimdall safer than Odin. So the rom has to be created into Heimdall Firmware Package. Then flashed.
That makes sense. It seems all the initial exploits worked nice and easy, but since the update all hell has broken. I'm going to try and find a Windows box and just use odin.
