[Q] Unroot without Odin - USB Device not recognized - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I'm having an issue with my t989 that has persisted since I stopped using Kang's ROMs and the Bullet Kernel.
After going from the Juggernaut ROM to Darkside's ICS when it came out, my phone started to not be recognized by any computer, be it OSX or Windows. I've tried everything on the PC software side, from clearing Kies and the Samsung Drivers, as well as clearing registry information and re-installing both separately, and this has not helped at all. The windows error is:
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
I don't use antivirus, and I don't use a firewall, suffice to say I'm a programmer and have plenty of experience in doodling with phones, and I'm stumped. I've come to the conclusion that the Bullet Kernel installed from my Juggernaut days is the cause of the issue, as I repeated the process on a friend's device and he has the exact same symptoms.
With this situation, I'm not able to access ODIN to return to complete stock, so I can't flash over the Bullet Kernel. Alongside the USB device not recognized problem, I also was not able to get into ODIN / download mode until I made my own USB Jig to get around it.
Is there any way to get back to the stock kernel without ODIN? Would Mobile Odin Pro work if Chainfire added support for our device? It's really pissing me off as I'm a software developer and can't use my own device to build to.
EDIT: As a note, when moving from Juggernaut / Bullet to Darkside, I flashed the appropriate ICS radio and kernel, but when returning to 2.3.5 stock from Samsung, somehow the Bullet kernel managed to persist.

edit: nvm you answered my question.
Im not aware of a way to unroot without Odin Can you get into recovery?

Hey, not sure if this will help, but there's links to flashable stock zips in this thread:

There is still a way to get back to the Stock ROM ( 2.3.5 ) and Recovery, but the kernel flash was not included with the package:
http://galaxys2root.com/t-mobile-galaxy-s2/how-to-unroot-t-mobile-galaxy-s2-sgh-t989/
This is apparently the "Zedomax" unroot that does not need the ability to hook up to Odin, so needless to say, it's not unrooting that I need, it's getting back to the stock kernel that is the problem.
Obviously now that I'm unrooted, there really isn't a way for me to install Mobile Odin Pro even if I had it. I've been looking how to contact him to request it, because I don't want to be rude and PM him the request when I'm sure that's not the way that respected XDA members would want.

Can I ask why you think the kernel alone isn't being overwritten? That seems odd to me, since every ROM packs its own kernel, and flashing a kernel specifically only replaces the kernel. So if you flash an ICS ROM you're getting an ICS kernel, GB you get a GB kernel, etc. It wouldn't work otherwise. If you haven't done it already, you might want to try Darkside super and cache wipes.

Well, for one, I get a Bullet loading screen... Apparently reading through other threads, it's a known issue that Zedomax's Stock ROM method doesn't include the kernel, which basically means I may have f'ed myself permanently seeing as how I can't get ODIN access. Unfortunately, galaxys2root.com didn't tell people on their site that it didn't include the kernel, so needless to say, I'm never going to that site again and I would advise people not to follow any of their stuff either.
Although it's a small omission, their lack of providing information has just caused me to possibly lose a moddable phone.
EDIT: the threads that I've been reading through are the ones you supplied, RTFOP

So can you not get into download mode or get your computer to recognize your phone in recovery? If you're willing to tinker some you can back track and root and reinstall and overwrite that kernel and then circle back.

Well, to re-hash over what I've said already for clarification's sake:
1. I can get into download / ODIN mode
2. I still CANNOT get my phone to recognize in recovery. I know it's not my PCs, it's the phone, and I suspect the Bullet Kernel as it was not reverted back to the stock kernel when I flash Zedomax.
With that said, I don't see how it's possible for me to root and get CWM seeing as how I'm on stock Recovery (3e), and I can't ODIN. Unless there is a untethered way to root the t989, I think i'm up ****'s creek.

At what point did you lose root access though?

The whole point of flashing Zedomax's .zip is to unroot and go back to stock Samsung 2.3.5.
Just to verify, I downloaded root checker and it states I do not have root access.

So if you can get into Odin with your jig workaround, why can't you load a custom recovery and super user and then run Darkside wipes and install whatever ROM you want?

I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding between you and I. When I say I can get into download / Odin MODE, that means I can force the phone itself into ODIN Mode, but since my computer does not recognize my t989, the ODIN application on my windows box does not recognize the phone, and the ID box does not 'turn yellow' as it should if my phone were recognized by my PC.
So even though my phone is waiting for the ODIN application on my windows to send it commands, I can't send it commands because the application won't recognize the phone.
Thus is my quandary.

Yeah, sorry, I didn't get that. Have you tried plugging it in without the sd card in? It's kind of a long shot, but errors on there might be keeping your computer from communicating with the device, since it seems to be working otherwise. Maybe the jtag repair service through mobile tech videos?

As you suggested, I tried taking out the SD card and that didn't help.
I'm trying to do as much as possible before I try and repair it. I may consider trying for a warranty replacement and take the risk, but I'd like to try everything I can before I take that step, I don't like not being able to fix something =p.
Thanks for the help btw.

[Q] Is it possible to go fully stock with out using Odin??

the tittle says it all. i want to go stock to take it back to sprint. b/c my phone is defected. my phone cant tell when its connectedto my computer.. it just keeps charging and never gives me an option to use the usb mas storage. yeah i tried changing cables, using different computers, disable usb debugging, tried different roms, tried going to recovery and mounting my storage. nothing works.. my phone works perfectly with a custom rom. however, I cant connect to my computer.. my phone is not bricked it just wont connect to my computer. so im trying to go back fuclly stock with out using ODIN.. Not sure why you have 2 threads about the same thing.. but anyways..
You might want to try out Mobile Odin
https://market.android.com/details?id=eu.chainfire.mobileodin.pro
It's $3.99, but well worth it.. I think anyone messing with custom ROMs and rooting their phones should have this just in case.
I'd actually like a youtube tutorial on this same process. Mobile odin confuses me a bit after using pc odin for years on my vibrant.

You can technically create an update script to flash via CWM and flash everything but the bootloaders...
there are some more advanced ways to flash bootloaders manually.. but I wouldn't recommend it unless you REALLY know what you're doing.. You can brick your phone, so it's not even worth it. I'm not sure they can even see the bootloader version anyhow, so it doesn't really matter.

You don't need root access to flash the kernel, since you would still be on custom recovery. So yeah flash a stock unrooted rom, then proceed to flash a stock kernel with stock recovery.

Or if for some strange reason it doesn't work in that order just flash the stock kernel first (it won't change until you reboot) then flash the stock rom without root.

So the only close enough to stock rom that i found is this one should i use this one ????? damme this is a headache http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1415924
You could also use terminal emulator on the phone and run the script from sfhub thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728) to install stock EG30+stock recovery, and run unroot script straight from the phone. Then just use file explorer to delete the 000root directory.
Since your phone wont recognize the computer you can always copy the files over by using a sd card reader.
So i went to the sprint store...and i told the tech support guy that my phone was not connecting to my computer and he took a quick look at my phone and said did you rooted??? and i frozed and he continued, if you rooted your phone then thats the problem. i told him that it was more of a hardware issue not a software...he wasnt even paying attention to me.. he just said stop messing with the phones if u dont know how to how to fix them.. i was so madd i felt like throwing him my phone at his face.. but then i thought to my self.. my phone is not messed up.. it just doesnt recognize my phone.. plus i got the XDA community..

What the hell is going on with these phones??? Me + 3 others have all started a thread today with the same issue! What could be causing this???
Wow... i just even did a dial code hard reset of the phone and i'm still having the same issue --- ughhhhhh frustrating
Just take your phone into sprint with it rooted. The first thing they will do is return it to full stock to see if that solves the problem. Sprint's policy is to service all phones rooted or not. Just expect it unrooted when they hand it back.

[Q] In need to some help, need to reset or nuke my phone.

OK, so here is my deal. I got my SGS2 a little over a year ago. With the help of this forum I was able to root without issue and flash many of roms. I am now at a point in my playing around that I am having issues doing anything. I would like to just factory reset in Kies, but I can't even do that. For some reason (I have a telus phone), Kies thinks I am a T-Mobile phone, or at least its what I can tell. When I launch Kies and it displays the phone and the and its settings eg: PDA, Radio, etc they all say TMB. I have no idea if that has nything to do with it or not. I tried flashing the Telus radio via Odin, though nothing changed in Kies. The last ROM I used seemed to have screw my Clock Work Recovery and I cannot figure how to get it back. I have tried re-flashing CWR, but I don't think I really understand the difference between Touch and Touch-less. As you can see I am fairly lost at this point. I am turning to all of you for help. I am open to trying anything, just point me to some guides, tips, tricks. I have tried a ton of stuff with no luck. I know these questions get asked all the time and I apologize for making another. I would not be doing so unless I really needed the help as usually I am pretty good with this stuff. I appreciate everyone in this forums and all the time they have put in to bringing us great information. I am thankful to anyone that can help me out. If you need any further info please just ask and I'll provide it as fast as I can!

I have, actually I may be running it now actually. It just seems like I have a lot of over lapping stuff. Things that were not fully removed, parts left behind, etc. Is there a easy way to lock up what ROM is running. I assume it's the stock rom as I have the Samsung Apps application on my phone and that is removed with most custom roms. Like I said I really just want to nuke this biatch and start from step one again. She is running like crap atm.
If you flashed the stock Rom you won't have cwm any more. You'll have to reflash it. The phone will be like it was when it was new.
You can get the stock Rom from Sammobile.com for your device and carrier. You 'll have to extract the tar.md5 file out of it using 7_zip. Then flash it with Odin

[Q] Stuck on the universe v0.2 fk23 jellyverse welcome screen

Hello everyone, this is my first post. I am not a complete noob I had a Motorola Triumph I flashed dozens of roms and never bricked it or anything. I have an epic 4g touch, of course, and it was running the Blu Kuban rom , I think 1.5.1 or something, the one beofre the latest update. So i wanted to try the 'Jellyverse" fk23 since I loved the ICS Universe rom, great battery life, better than the kubans. I flashed the rom first with the recovery the blu kuban had, and then I dont know why i flashed an acs fk23 recovery, I didnt read the instructions right, dont know what i did there. Phone boots, and stays on welcome screen, nothing more.
Yes, I have tried Odin, phone isn't recognized. Have tried two pcs, reinstalling drivers, 3 different usb cables, and odin cant recognize it.
or the pc for that matter.Phone does get in android system recovery 3e, and does read sd card.tried flashing ff18 update and get signature not valid etc. Forgot to mention the usb port may be defective cause it did get wet with milk a bit the other day, i dired it but left it on most of that day anyway, but it still charges.
What can i do? I went to best buy but I am scared they will notice what happened, the welcome screen is obviously jellybean...
How can i save this phone? adb, fatboot? Sorry I am a noob when it comes to these things i Just mentioned. And sorry in advance if this was posted somewhere else. I am really grateful to all epic 4g touch devs, they make awesome roms. I know its my fault, etc, I just want to know if theres anyway i can revert to stock anything or get it working, or if i have to jtag it, or I will just have to travel 2 hours to visit my sister who works at best buy and ask her to play dumb that the phone is rooted and replace it with the best buy insurnace i have.

Use Mobile Odin....Flash EL26 found here https://www.dropbox.com/s/f83s6y8wsnzqjau/EL26_StockCWM.tar.md5 (I will link to original in a little bit) ...Then reboot phone into custom recovery (power button and vol up until phone reboots)...Ohh wait, your stuck in a bootloop?? You're definitely going to need to utilize Odin on the PC to get out of it
Edit: Follow the instructions here.....Have you tried a One-Click odin? If your PC won't recognize the phone...restart everything. Try a different USB port, make sure your drivers are installed. I can't think of any other troubleshooting steps.....Maybe a different computer?

[Q] Unable to flash Stock ROM

I bought a T-Mobile Galaxy S 3 LTE with model number SGH-T999L. I used Odin V3 1.85 to flash TWRP recovery and CyanogenMod 10.0.0.
Everything went well but my camera doesn't work. On launching the camera, I get a "Can't connect to camera" error and it quits. The same behavior is observed when using other camera apps. I tried the instructions in this thread(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2239414) but it did not fix my problem. I now want to go back to my stock ROM. I successfully downloaded and flashed stock recovery using Odin. However, Odin fails when I try to flash the stock ROM obtained from the samsung website. It gives me a "write failed" error and stops. Any tips or suggestions to help me out would be appreciated. Thanks

Why not reflash the stock ODIN flash rom and make sure it all works ok for you, that will tell you exactly what the problem is.
If the stock rom is working properly, then there is only one thing left which is the culprit and that is the CM10/AOKP/AOSP
or PORTED roms which many people seem to like flashing.
The CM10/AOKP/AOSP and ported roms are excellent if you are a developer or if you like to do a lot of experimentation with your phone.
So the thing to do now is reboot your phone to recovery mode, do a "Factory Reset", "Wipe Cache", "Wipe System" and "Wipe Dalvik".
When that's done Open Odin and put the stock rooted T999 Tmobile Jellybean 4.1.2 into Odin's PDA slot, go into download mode
and once you see Odin is connected to the phone start the flash. Have patience for the phone to boot after its done flashing.
Here is the stock rooted Odin flash T999 Tmobile Jellybean 4.1.2 rom that you can download if you like: T999_UVDMD5
Official JB Firmware - Latest JB 4.1.2 Firmware
My suggestion to you is to only flash Samsung T999 Tmobile stock based Jellybean 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 roms in the future.
But who am I to say whats best..... This is just my personal opinion...... Which usually is not worth a dime. LOL

I am a newbie. I thought the T999 was the same as the T999L. That would explain why Odin doesnt flash stock T999 onto my device. Can anyone here post a link to the stock SGH-T999L ROM?

I had the same issue with the same phone. Got it 2 weeks ago haha. Did you happen to make a backup first using CWM Recovery? If so, you can just restore that backup and you'll have your camera functionality back. It's pretty annoying switching back and forth from CM10.1 back to stock just to take pictures but Rom manager makes it pretty quick and effortless.
Actually now that I think of it, they prob wont release the original firmware. Seems like the first build is never available, only when an update is released do we get firmware we csn download.
I am working with another member on getting something going for the T999L, but right now we are stuck until a verified safe method of rooting is found. (Dont want to flash a recovery or cf autoroot w/o knowing it wont screw something up)
Itll happen, but we just gotta be patient.
Just reread the op and see that you say you flashed TWRP. So you were able to initially gain root without any problems?

Actually now that I think of it, they prob wont release the original firmware. Seems like the first build is never available, only when an update is released do we get firmware we csn download.
I am working with another member on getting something going for the T999L, but right now we are stuck until a verified safe method of rooting is found. (Dont want to flash a recovery or cf autoroot w/o knowing it wont screw something up)
Itll happen, but we just gotta be patient.
Just reread the op and see that you say you flashed TWRP. So you were able to initially gain root without any problems?

I used Odin to flash Clockwork Mod recovery first. I did not like Clockwork Mod's interface and reflashed with TWRP. I had no problems to gain root with either of these methods. I also tried Cyanogenmod stable 10.0.0 and then 10.1 RC2 without any problems. As far as I can tell, all apps work except for the camera. One word of caution though. As you can see from my posts, I am new and dont know what I am doing. I might have just gotten lucky since my device is still unbricked. I had only one "scary" moment during the entire process. I used TWRP to wipe my phone clean and was stuck with no OS install file. ADB sideload did not work since it could not recognize the device at that point. Luckily, I had a micro SD card lying around and was able to put in a new OS install file using my laptop and then TWRP was able to handle it.

Wish I had made a backup! Could you zip up the files contained inside "/system/cameradata/" folder and post a link here? It would help me and anyone else with the same problem restore the camera's functionality. In case you want to try it out, follow the instructions in this link but using the files from your stock backup

Good Luck!
How did you get Cyanogenmod installed on the t999l every time i try it aborts with status 7
Mine was failing with this same error. I reverted back to stock, re rooted, then downloaded the flash directly to the phones internal storage. Worked like a champ. I think in my case, there is an issue with the SD card, its kind of old.

You reverted to stock on the T999L? please exspain how that was done
Re flashed stock ROM using Odin. I believe I got the file from Samsung's website, but I'm not positive of that. I do know its huge, over 1 gig. If you need help with the re flash I know there are already how to's on here about that, so I won't go into it here.

You must be using a T999 as your sig indicates, not a T999L. Am I correct?

Don't I feel like a tool now. Yes Doc, plain old t999 here. Now that I read back through the whole thread here I see that I was being a bit redundant. Now I will return to my closet under the stairs.

No worries! We all do stuff like that from time to time!

Possible to damage Recovery section?

Hello all
I unfortunately had to get a replacement for my S3 because the charging port got screwed up.
I tried to root the phone by installing CWM and it seemed to go fine. I did this with Odin using qbking77's methods and files.
I went to look for my zip file to flash and I could find no zip files at all.
It kept saying that E won't mount and stuff like that.
I had a stock recovery tar file for my GalaxyS3 from qbking77 that I used before to get to stock recovery for updates
I flashed it with odin and it said it flashed fine.
Phone seems to be working fine.
I went back to make sure it was there and it showed the little android guy with his heart spinning and then turning red and he died!
Several error messages came up in red.
Anyone ever hear about this and what did I do wrong?
I am sure I used the files I have used for my Galaxy before.
The phone still works so far thankfully!
Any advise and help would be appreciated.
Mike

The issue is because of a change that was made to the Newer Devices. Use one of the Recoveries from THIS THREAD.
If it's a new s3 its a known issue with the phone...u need a modded recovery. Check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391616

I am hoping that this means that I haven't fried that part of my phone and I can still install a recovery. Are these recoveries that I could use to root my phone or custom recoveries that I can revert to to get over the air updates. Thank you very much for your help you guys. I'm still kind of new with this even though I've been doing it for years

Yes you can still use these Recoveries. I doubt you " fried " your device. Use these Recoveries in the Root process where you would use the older ones. Yes you can Revert them Back.
Then how can I revert back to get over the air updates? The stock recovery that I flashed showed the little Android guy had died..

I think this should work for you just fine. Just be sure to not miss the step about the factory reset.

From what I read you have to have a recovery to flash this.. I have no recover... And CWM won't let me do anything... That's my problem.. This new style of phone won't let me put on a functional recovery.. Does that make sense?

In the OP of the thread I linked you it gives instructions on how to push the Recovery with ADB. It also has Recoveries you can do through ODIN.
