Been having some issues with my phone, even after performing a few complete system wipes. Read that flashing back to complete stock and doing it all from scratch, root, tasks Rom, gaps, restore, can fix a lot of problems.
I have a MacBook and don't have Windows installed anymore. Is there any way for me to do this easily on my Mac? A guide would be especially appreciate.
Thanks a lot

you could setup a virtual machine on your mac or use mobile odin right on your S3
Heimdall is an option I believe. This method ?

This will brick his device the moment it reboots
Heimdall should work, although you may need to build it from source
Probably not the answer you are looking for, but use a friend's pc?

looks like either heimdall or mobile odin. if your phone is rooted and running cwm or twrp, why not use a flashable stock firmware zip?

Hey guys a buddy of mine just bought a tmobile sgs2 and he was asking me if there is any way to root it using a Mac as this is the only computer he has right now. So I was wondering is there any way to root this phone on a Mac and if there is can someone please tell me how.

I would try this
http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
Ive never used it personally so I would read up a bit. I've seen several post in these forums about how mac users cant use Odin but never saw anyone post a link to Hemdall. It is cross platform so works with windows, linux, and mac. I know others have used it on my old epic4g but maybe someone can say if it works for the SGH-T989
Rooting itself with Odin no. Ive even tried installing adb with little success as my mac doesnt have the correct samsung drivers. His best bet would be to root it using a windows partition under bootcamp. Stay away from virtual machines....they may cause more frustrations than good. Good luck

I successfully rooted on my iMac by installing the free Windows 8 release on Oracles VM virtual box, then flashing CWM through Odin as per the guide.

bootcamp ftw. the windows partition on my mac only exists for qpst and odin.
if you are interested in hacking your phone, windows is a must. i wouldnt recommend even aquiring root access on your device if you dont have the means to bring it back to life.

i preefer to do adb on my mac, but had to use a Windows machine for Odin. Ran into problems trying to run Heimdall on the Mac. It's oh so simple too. Quick flash on Odin and you're done, everything else from there can be done on the Mac.

Dont get mad but have you tried Google? I put in ---- odin for --- and it finished it off for me. Then I clicked on the link where I then proceeded to download a file which is name odin 1.8.5.tar.gz - I am assuming the extension is for Mac? Correct?
If so come on man that was too easy.... If not my bad since I am not an apple guy...

I have used Heimdall in the past, but currently I use either Mobile ODIN, or I boot up Windows 7 in Parallels Desktop and do it that way. Both work great.
I wouldn't use parralel for Odin
Lets say parralel crashes or lags ur screwed

I use vmware and xp. No problems. Just make sure you always let vmware & windows take control of any USB devices and don't share them with host os (osx).
ditch odin and use heimdall.. dont have to worry about drivers etc.. infact use linux

Seriously? We run mission critical servers in Parallels or VMWare; they are rock solid. This is totally a good option for people. Even if it did lag, it won't ever screw up the ODIN download feature, so you can just restart and start over.

Heimdall is pretty good, but you can use 1 click odin package; it's super easy. takes like 2 minutes and you're good to go. Why don't you just compile your own OS, then build heimdall from source? then you can be a super l337 h4x0r
well i prefer to use linux, and i prefer to use heimdall because both work flawless for me. i use linux to compile android, and compile kernels, android is a linux derivative, linux is probably the most stable OS family to have ever been created.. the fact that you CAN compile heimdall, linux, and android from source makes them the better solution, but you dont have to.. which also makes them a good solution.. plus Odin has been known to brick phones..
Hi:
I've spent a couple weeks trying to find a solid solution to my issue, and haven't quite gotten it. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction, thank you.
- I have a t999/ t-mobile GS3. I flashed the so-called "leaked OTA 4.1 upgrade" UVDLI3 to it, and I'm not really happy with it.
- I'd like to go to a rooted phone, so I can install AOKP or similar. So I'd like to either root the existing UVDLI3, or downgrade to 4.0.4 so I can use the root script originated on XDA.
- I use a Macintosh computer. I can get access to a PC, but it's a bit dicey if I have to install software and drivers on it. Possible, but not preferable.
Any recommendations to get either rooted or back to 4.0.4? Thank you all very much.
There's an official jellybean release for T-Mobile better than the leak. Not sure what your asking but there's a root66 stock jellybean file you can Odin that has root already.

Thanks -- my biggest stumbling block is Odin, which is PC only, but the Root66 page suggests maybe mobile Odin would do it. I'll give that a try.

You need to be rooted in order to use mobile odin
Mobile Odin is a mac users savior!
Jus be careful to never lose root once you've got it.
If you haven't already, I would seriously recommend you get the Pro version for its EverRoot option.

So I tried Mobile Odin, and realized that requires that I be rooted already (thanks also j_smith305). So it's either find a way to root UVDLI3, or downgrade to 4.0.4 and root that. Back to my original issue, I think.
You can install virtual machine on your mac and then install windows on it. You will have odin working on your mac without buying new pc. For free vm just make small research in google. Also you can try using some exe emulator. I think Wine is available for mac. Or make research if there is odin or something like odin for linux. If there is then download some linux (I recommend ubuntu) and install it on usb drive.

I've tried using odin on a virtual machine but I've had problems installing the samsung drivers on it. You can try doing it on bootcamp but I don't know if that'll work since I haven't tried it. I have a mac but I also have a PC so I do all my rooting and stuff on there. If you have no success on a mac, then your only option might be to just use windows if you can.

That won't work on Jellybean. Looks like we are gonna have to use bootcamp. I have to get my install discs bc you need the drivers to install windows. Mountain Lion sucks, and I hear Win 7 works flawlessly so lets see whats good.

Thanks very much -- I finally bit the bullet and borrowed someone else's PC, downgraded to 4.0.4, and then rooted that with the XDA-posted script. Worked great. I then installed Mobile Odin Pro, then the new Frosty Jelly Bean FW. Thank you so much.

So you installed newest FrostyJB? My suggestion is go back to odin and flash root66 4.1.1. You will get less problems with the rom and better battery life. People actualy reported that rom works better if you flash stock 4.1 before.
I'm just saying that so you can avoid some problems related to that and asking unnecessary questions in Frosty thread.

Thanks -- we'll see how it goes. Now that I have the thing rooted and OMP working, it's really easy to switch the ROM up. So far Frosty has worked well, and Root66 looks good too. I'd really like a good AOKP ROM to try out as well. Hope to find one that's reasonably stable.
I got some questions about some stock phones, I know this forum is generally for rooted phones.
I just unrooted my device and ended up with firmware FL04 which is 4.1.1, my wifes phone which has never been rooted is FL24 which is 4.0.?. I see the latest firmware is GB29 and that is supposed to be the update from 4.0 to 4.1. The GB27 update is not available through OTA though, only through kies. I use only Linux machines and kies is not available for Linux.
My first question is when was FL04 releases compared to GB29. I can't find anywhere where FL04 was released.
Also wondering if there is a way to manually update an unrooted phone with my Linux machine, through heimdall or maybe another way.

I think this will start you down the right path.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348392 ...
Easiest way I found to work with this phone under Linux is to simply create a virtual machine with windows xp or even 7 and just use that for any sort of flashing via one clicks or OTA updates.
You can also try to get Kies working under wine but from my experience its more trouble than its worth (which is what lead me to the virtual machine solution)

Read.. The post link a sent...ya. My bet is you're missing a step in heimdall..
I started reading it, then decided to re root my phone. Been flashing ROMs trying to find one I like. I had rooted months ago and hadn't switched ROMs for a long time.
I haven't installed heimdall frontend, just command line. So looks like I'll need frontend first.

Well. I looked at it and I dont know which file to download for front-end heimdall. It seems like a lot of work for an unrooted device. I'll probably just root her phone. Its pretty easy from heimdall command line. I tried kobridge's gb27 stock rom today on my phone and it runs pretty smooth. She wont know its rooted and its more updated than what she has. I may keep it too. I dont care for themes or tweaks, just like to remove bloatware.

As yet I've been using my Note 8.0 Wifi (N5110?) rooted but with stock firmware. However, I'd quite like to get at least a custom recovery on there so I can try some different ROMs. But first I have some questions -- sorry if they're basic but I learnt about flashing with my Nexus 4 and things don't seem nearly as simple with non Google devices...
I am aware that there's a Note 8 toolkit, but it's Windows only, as in Odin by the looks of it. I read about another flashing tool called Heimdall with Linux support. Has anyone used Heimdall with their Note 8 WiFi successfully? I'm cautious of jumping into this and destroying my expensive new tablet, so I'd really appreciate any advice.
EDIT: Flashed a recovery in download mode using heimdall without issues.

you could try framaroot (Android app available from thread here on xda), depending on your ROM version it could work (or not) - no risk, nothing to lose, and if it works - it's the fastest way of getting root
