I'm stuck on my still crappy Macbook--my first 4.1.1 N2 rooted easy using heimdall (months ago), and the respective images in the root guide.
Well, after a warrantee replacement that has shipped with 4.1.2 that method is a no-go.
Anyone have the updated recovery file for heimdall on OSX?
I believe that Heimdall Flasher flashes .md5 rom files. Use STANDART in Heimdall to flash a .md5 rom file into SGH-T889 Galaxy Note 2.

Thank you for that--still not clear on the tool.
I've always used the full "Heimdall Suite". I've never seen the "flasher".
I'll have to check it out while I wait another warrantee N2 (today's delivery came with an obstructed notification light).
You'd think with all of us poor saps stuck using OSX there would be a little more support--alas, was just about to build my own windows7 laptop when the wife and I decided to move half way across the country. *tear*
Nope. The flasher is a no-go.
Tries to run as an .exe file and that is a roadblock in OSX. I'm DL'ing a stock injected rom and going to try and run that through Heimdall...sucks all newer replacements have gone to 4.1.2.

I've tried extracting the md5s and I am getting a "missing XML files" prompt no matter which one I use...All it really needs is a .pit file to flash, or hell, even just the recovery.img. Sadly, the macbook refuses to open and separate the packages to let me get at them.
*sign* I hate OSX.
I don't have ... well no Macs. The reason being that Apple limits too much to their own ecosystem. So I can't look at their version of Heimdall Suite. I will play with the Windows version. reading the documentations The file needs firmware.xml to validate the rom. This is the developers way of making Heimdall safer than Odin. So the rom has to be created into Heimdall Firmware Package. Then flashed.
That makes sense. It seems all the initial exploits worked nice and easy, but since the update all hell has broken. I'm going to try and find a Windows box and just use odin.

If your Mac will allow you just boot camp into windows (first install windows of course), then install from there. If your Mac doesn't allow you to boot camp into windows then that can be a good reason to purchase a new mac.
Sadly it won't run bootcamp. And I'll never ever buy another Apple product. Looking into cheap net books right now just in case I cannot find a Windows box in the next 2 days.

I never tried Mobile Odin. But with the Pro version has a EverRoot mode that will root while flashing. Flashes while on your device. Same developer, Chainfire, as SuperSU Pro and [root] Triangle Away apps.

When EB13 was released, Samsung provided a full wipe/install tool called Epic4G_FroyoUpgrade_EB13.exe
If you install that tool, and dig into the directories, you will find a normal .tar file inside, same as what we use in Odin. [e.g. ..\Samsung Electronics\SWUpgrade for SPH-D700\Models\Binary\SPH-D700-EB13-8Gb-REL.tar.md5]
I would like to know if anyone has tried swapping the tar.md5 file with another one, like perhaps official di18, or the unofficial pre-rooted eb13 tars.
Since Odin seems so flaky for folks, if we could simply swap out the tar in that folder this tool could be a easier/more friendly flasher going forward.

If it is setup like the update tool for the samsung moment it will only work with the update tar that comes with it.If the hack for the moment updater would work on it (which I haven't tried)it might work with other tar files.

Samsung originally intended to release a Mac version, but after the update being pulled for EB13 they did not publish a Mac version of this particular installer.
With EC05, Sprint is rolling it out OTA to all users. It is unknown if Samsung will release an updated installer once Sprint's OTA is completed. If they do, then I would assume Windows then Mac would be released if they didn't release both at the same time.

I've already searched around, and it would seem there's currently no root method unless you have Windows. I'm already rooted, but I'd like to help my mom root hers and she's back in Philly. She actually put CM10 on her Touchpad all by herself lol.
My guess is that she may just have to wait, but if anyone could point me in the right direction that'd be great. Thank You
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
there is a way she can root it right now. she can go out and get herself a real computer!
I'm just kidding of course. what has to happen is for a dev (ie someone who knows what they are doing) that had a Mac to get involved. that's what has held up Mac root on every other device. which is kind of obvious I guess since you would need a Mac to make a root method for a Mac...
I'm not too used to Macs so I don't know if it's possible, but she could live boot her Mac onto a Linux distro, get wine, and do it the Windows way.

Theoretically we could use Heimdall instead of Odin to flash the necessary bits. I am also without a windoz machine, so will hopefully find some time this weekend to try it out. I did see that Heimdall 4rc1 is supposed to support the sgn2. I'll post an update here if I find out any more.

Also, she could run a virtual windows over the Mac os. There's Apple boot camp and Parallel.

OK, here is what I figured out for getting root using Heimdall, which should work with Win, Mac, or Linux.
I found "How to Root and Install TWRP on Sprint Galaxy Note 2" where zedomax talks about rooting and in the video I heard mentioned Mac and Linux instructions and to go to http://galaxynote2root.com/ where I found examples of using Heimdall for Linux and Mac, though they are not specifically for the Sprint version.
So, what I did was get the latest Heimdall 1.4 Release Candidate 1 and compiled it on my Linux Mint desktop, though the precompiled 1.3.2 binaries found on the Heimdall home page should also work (get the Mac version here).
Instead of using the Sprint root method from galaxynote2root.com, I went with the CF-Auto-Root v1.0 compliments of chainfire.
Next I downloaded the Sprint SGN II CF-Auto-Root package from the bottom of http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/.
Then unzipped the file to get CF-Auto-Root-t0ltespr-sphl900.tar.md5 which I further extracted to get cache.img and recovery.img.
Then simply booted my phone into download mode (turn off phone, then hold VolDown+Home+Power to boot and when prompted press VolUp) and connected the phone to my computer and ran:
sudo heimdall flash --cache cache.img --recovery recovery.img
That's it! This will install SuperSU v0.96 and after rebooting I found the play store has an update to v0.97. This method also preserves the stock recovery, so I also installed TWRP 2.3.1.1 using the GooManager Android App Install Method.
Finally, I rebooted into recovery and did a full backup of the phone making sure to also backup the EFS partition as suggested here which has other useful information.
Hope this helps and isn't too confusing to follow.
Thanks for the info, but I'm either going to need something like the toolkit for Windows in a Mac environment or files & commands that can be pushed through terminal. Any updates on this?
Sent from my Galaxy Note II using Tapatalk
You only need two things. The mac version of heimdall and the cf-autoroot package for our phone. Then just flash the cache and recovery images from the terminal.
At that point you will have root and can also install TWRP for flashing other ROMs and things.

Hi:
I've spent a couple weeks trying to find a solid solution to my issue, and haven't quite gotten it. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction, thank you.
- I have a t999/ t-mobile GS3. I flashed the so-called "leaked OTA 4.1 upgrade" UVDLI3 to it, and I'm not really happy with it.
- I'd like to go to a rooted phone, so I can install AOKP or similar. So I'd like to either root the existing UVDLI3, or downgrade to 4.0.4 so I can use the root script originated on XDA.
- I use a Macintosh computer. I can get access to a PC, but it's a bit dicey if I have to install software and drivers on it. Possible, but not preferable.
Any recommendations to get either rooted or back to 4.0.4? Thank you all very much.
There's an official jellybean release for T-Mobile better than the leak. Not sure what your asking but there's a root66 stock jellybean file you can Odin that has root already.

You need to be rooted in order to use mobile odin
Mobile Odin is a mac users savior!
Jus be careful to never lose root once you've got it.
If you haven't already, I would seriously recommend you get the Pro version for its EverRoot option.

So I tried Mobile Odin, and realized that requires that I be rooted already (thanks also j_smith305). So it's either find a way to root UVDLI3, or downgrade to 4.0.4 and root that. Back to my original issue, I think.
You can install virtual machine on your mac and then install windows on it. You will have odin working on your mac without buying new pc. For free vm just make small research in google. Also you can try using some exe emulator. I think Wine is available for mac. Or make research if there is odin or something like odin for linux. If there is then download some linux (I recommend ubuntu) and install it on usb drive.

I've tried using odin on a virtual machine but I've had problems installing the samsung drivers on it. You can try doing it on bootcamp but I don't know if that'll work since I haven't tried it. I have a mac but I also have a PC so I do all my rooting and stuff on there. If you have no success on a mac, then your only option might be to just use windows if you can.

So you installed newest FrostyJB? My suggestion is go back to odin and flash root66 4.1.1. You will get less problems with the rom and better battery life. People actualy reported that rom works better if you flash stock 4.1 before.
I'm just saying that so you can avoid some problems related to that and asking unnecessary questions in Frosty thread.

Thanks -- we'll see how it goes. Now that I have the thing rooted and OMP working, it's really easy to switch the ROM up. So far Frosty has worked well, and Root66 looks good too. I'd really like a good AOKP ROM to try out as well. Hope to find one that's reasonably stable.

Yup. I've read lots of horror stories around Odin, or to be more precise, mismatch between the .ops and Odin version.
Apparently there are several versions of Odin floating around the Intertubes, and the .ops for them are not interchangeable, and so on and so forth...
Back when I was about to flash my very first custom recovery (RZRecovery), I had been equipping myself with all things necessary: several versions of Odin, several versions of .ops, and firmware from Sam...
... but then I read the helpful post of someone, sharing a way to flash a recovery via Terminal.
Ever since that time, I never touched Odin; always flash things (recovery images) using Terminal instead.

I got some questions about some stock phones, I know this forum is generally for rooted phones.
I just unrooted my device and ended up with firmware FL04 which is 4.1.1, my wifes phone which has never been rooted is FL24 which is 4.0.?. I see the latest firmware is GB29 and that is supposed to be the update from 4.0 to 4.1. The GB27 update is not available through OTA though, only through kies. I use only Linux machines and kies is not available for Linux.
My first question is when was FL04 releases compared to GB29. I can't find anywhere where FL04 was released.
Also wondering if there is a way to manually update an unrooted phone with my Linux machine, through heimdall or maybe another way.

I think this will start you down the right path.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348392 ...
Easiest way I found to work with this phone under Linux is to simply create a virtual machine with windows xp or even 7 and just use that for any sort of flashing via one clicks or OTA updates.
You can also try to get Kies working under wine but from my experience its more trouble than its worth (which is what lead me to the virtual machine solution)

Read.. The post link a sent...ya. My bet is you're missing a step in heimdall..
I started reading it, then decided to re root my phone. Been flashing ROMs trying to find one I like. I had rooted months ago and hadn't switched ROMs for a long time.
I haven't installed heimdall frontend, just command line. So looks like I'll need frontend first.

Well. I looked at it and I dont know which file to download for front-end heimdall. It seems like a lot of work for an unrooted device. I'll probably just root her phone. Its pretty easy from heimdall command line. I tried kobridge's gb27 stock rom today on my phone and it runs pretty smooth. She wont know its rooted and its more updated than what she has. I may keep it too. I dont care for themes or tweaks, just like to remove bloatware.
