[Q] T-Mobile Update service??? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Got a notification this morning that there is a new software update available for me. I have looked high and low and haven't been able to find anything. I would just install it and see what it is but i am rooted and don't want to screw up my phone. Currently running 4.1.1 stock, but I cannot find anything anwyhere about a new update being installed.
Anyone seeing this also? If so, what is it?

Don't know why you are just getting this - its been out since Jan. I think. It's just a little update. Nothing major. Still 4.1.1 Check the thread in development section to install update with root using Odin.

This morning, I woke up to this same notice. I'm running stock unrooted 4.1.1. I put it on hold until I could find out what it was.
(I really want to root this thing but only have a MAC and have never used Odin to root a phone.)

A modem update that's all

I would suggest using mobile Odin. That's how I do it. You just need an app to unzip the rom download, which then gives you a tar file. Do not unzip the tar file. That's the format mobile Odin uses.

If Odin is available for a Mac the Root66 method is very easy - I used Odin and Root66 the first time I rooted any Android device and it went well.

I Agree I Got That Notification In Jan Too Was Really Hyped But Found Out It Was Nothing Major. TMobile Is A RealPain When It Comes Too Releasing Updates Don't Know Why 4.1.2 Hasn't Started Rolling Out. It's Gonna Take Forever To Get 4.2 Lets Not Even Think About The Wait For 5.0.

Need some help guys!?

My friends has a gs3 he purchased on release day and rooted it. The past week he accepted two ota's which broke his root. So I'm trying to root it for him but here's where the confusion kicks in. On sprints website it actually show these updates are old and not new and there's two more recent ones he never got pushed to him. Right now the phone is on LG2 and won't update any further. What do I need to do to be up to date with root. Should I just look for a way to root this build or try updating it. By the way I haven't seen any root methods for this build which is why I'm asking. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds

Thank you! One more question. I'm reading but I don't see anything regarding data wiped. So does doing any of these steps wipe out all data?

The method he used to root it in the first place should work again. Try that.
Then once it's rooted again go to this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099
Download the file "LI3 STOCK WITH AUTO COUNTER RESET" in the first post and flash the file in recovery. That will put the phone to 100%stock, unrooted, on the latest build.
From that point, if he wants to, he can reroot the phone and install the latest TWRP recovery. After that, tell him not to accept any OTA updates. Come back here to the development forum and someone will have the update in flashable form so that root isn't lost.

Yup thats the most easy way of doing it. you say ur not rooted but do you have custom recovery? If so then re rooting before the flash wouldn't be necessary.
It will not wipe data however its recommended that you do. granted it will probably work just fine if it being installed over top of a stock Rom. Then to keep root/recovery just follow the instructions in the post

I'm not sure if he has a custom recovery but I'm assuming if he was able to accept ota's and install them fine he must have stock recovery. I'll have to check and see a lil later as he's at work now.

Sprints update system sucks......As for odin, you select the file you want to flash and click start......pretty stupid proof if you ask me. There is a .tar for the most recent update and the jellybean leak available in the development section.

Yes it is stupid proof but it also makes you have to take an extra step to reset the count. On my phone I just deal with the Odin OC which don't mess with your counts and come rooted then mobile Odin for the rest. Never have to worry about a flash count. But anyways thanks for all the help guys! I'm going to try and get this done tonight. Even though we both going for the note 2 in just a matter of days

Updated, Rooted, and now I get an update?

So I updated to 4.1.2 recently and decided I'd simply root my phone. Now today I have the AT&T updater telling me I have an update pending. I'm already on 4.1.2 and the only possible reason I could conceive as to why this is popping up is because during rooting something must have changed and that flagged the updater as me having an obsolete firmware. Anyone else getting this?

If you are going to stick with stock, you may want to use autoruns to disable the check for updates. That way at least the notification will go away.

Samsung launches firmware update for Galaxy S4

Once the firmware is installed, users will have the ability to offload their app installs to the SD card. That's especially important for 16GB device owners who were upset to find that they had just 9.15GB of usable space on the device's storage. Moving apps to the SD card can save some of the needed space. Samsung has also found a way to squeeze another 0.08GB of space on the device's drive, according to SamMobile, which was first to report on the news.
In addition to handling the storage issue, the software update for the Galaxy S4 includes a host of fixes and improvements, including the ability to record HDR video and a fix for the purple effect users were seeing when scrolling through pages.

Nah, T-mobile DID send me the update, the very day i purchased my phone, like May 7th or 8th, I had the incremental update that i noticed changed my transparent notification bar to like charcoal black. I had noted the dates as April 26 before the update, and May 6-7 on the newer update.
It's just I decided to try CF Auto-Root, once i realized i just wanted things back to the way i had it, yes, I BOUGHT triangle away, ran the reset flash counter, saw my status on rom read custom, so i flashed the official stock tar by odin and now it says i'm on official.
Issue now is, although my counter is at 0, and the status says official, won't ota to may 7th. I will try Samsung Kies though.
Edit: Even Samsung Kies Reports i'm up to date, which, i suppose I am for the most part, but still not up to date with the incremental May 7th release.

See what I was looking at thinking I was behind was the kernel version..
I got so used to seeing the kernel get updated whenever a new update rolls out on my old phone that I had no idea the may 7th update didn't bring a newer kernel.
Yes. I have MDL on baseband/modem and on the build number. Thing that was throwing me off was paying attention to the kernel version as Friday, April 26, also, i could of sworn the homescreen status bar isn't supposed to be transparent, but mine is, looking back at how it wasn't transparent before last time i was on the may 7th build, now that it's transparent on some things, i just got really confused. might of been the old background i had before, seeing to it that it's clear on homescreen now, and charcoal black when i open settings.
What I did to get an I9505 Odin build on my M919 was just flash the firmware, wait for it to fail at modem, then odin flash the UVUAMDL modem. Reboot and everything is perfect (except the Samsung Knox modified notification, of course).

Of course. And after promising the update after advertising it they halt it. And they put out no official posting of this that I could find. Or the person you talked to is full of it because they don't know why you have not got it and don't want to bother or don't know how to figure it out. The last is the most likely.
Now of it is true about the bug I wonder if they will push the bug free version out to everyone again.

You updated via Kies? I believe AT&T is only updating OTA, not through Kies.
Also, I was pure stock, but rooted. The update failed. It left my phone half updated and I couldn't get it to update, even after unrooting. This appears to be what happened to most rooted 4.1.1 phones on AT&T.
I had to flash back to stock via Kies in order for the update to work.

Oh I'm sorry. Since this is an AT&T forum I just assumed.
I'm sure in a worse case scenario you can just flash it back to stock. I choose to use Kies because then I didn't have to download the correct firmware like you do with Odin.
The flash counter still says 1, but the Device Status did reset to Normal. Of course I lost root.

I don't think rooting enables tripping the counter. From what I understand, Tripping flash counter occurs when you flash a custom recovery on jellybean. Best method is to just reset the flash counter when you are going to unroot your phone by using the TriangleAway app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114

Tried update, now says software is up to date

Hello,
I have always thought that OTA update would fail with a custom recovery. However after reading about another user's experience I decided to try it. This person stated that when they did the update CWM warned them that it would be replaced and asked if they wanted to fix it. It also warned that they would lose root and asked if they wanted to fix it. Sound familiar to anyone?
I did download the update but when I tried to install it failed. Now AT&T says my software is up to date, which is not true.
I am still on 4.1.2, rooted, CWM installed. Best way to upgrade now? I can't even find the OTA upgrade file that I downloaded.

From my experience with 3 i747m phones, rooted systems well not take an ota update.
Yup, you cannot get the ota if rooted, or with a custom recovery. You need to be full stock. Best way is a fresh firmware flash and factory reset.
I don't have to install OTA, I just wanted to update to the latest official AT&T version. Is there a flashable available that will work coming from 4.1.2?
By the way I used triangle away, downloaded update again, thought it was going to work but the update crashed

The latest firmware that's available is the 4.3 build. Havent been able to make a working one for 4.4.2 yet. But you can update using that firmware then use one of the threads in this section to update to kk.
Ok confused. Not sure how to install 4.3. Have read about bootloaders and modems needed before flashing. Guess I will have to keep reading. How to gy from 4.1.2 rooted, CWM, to the latest official which now I think is 4.3?

You can either follow the OP through step 4, or flash the firmware from this thread using Odin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2722660
After that you can follow the remaining steps in this OP, or try to get the official ota to update to 4.4.2.
Since you do not have the 4.3 bootloader, you could start fresh by installing stock 4.1.1 from sammobile.com using Odin and then just keep running OTA until you get to 4.4.2. Remember, using Odin will wipe everything on the phone so make sure you backup your important data.

Everytime I try to download something from Sammobile.com my AVG pops up a warning. Is this normal? I haven't yet made it through all of their stalls, installs, etc. to get to downloading the actually firmware.
Used to love AVG. But I think theyve gone downhill and this is a perfect example. Its a false positive. (Unless your browsers been hijacked or youre clicking on a bad/fake link).
Ive been using sammobile for years and never had a single problem.
I have been using sammobile for quite some time.
The site is legit. Maybe avg is causing the problem. I can download with no problem.
Not trying to be annoying, as I said haven't done any of this for a while but.....could I not flash a stock recovery, use triangle away, unroot, and then get the ota to work?

You could try that but there is no guarantee that it'll take the OTA update after going through the procedure you described.
If you removed too many Samsung Apps, that may cause the OTA update to fail as well.
Don't think I removed any Samsung or ATT apps I just had them disabled. Since I tried to run the update though they have all resurrected themselves. I have never flashed a stock recovery or unrooted before though

All I can say is try it and see what happens. If it doesn't work, the simplest would be to restore to completely stock and start the OTA update process.

I guess I can't read, but so far I have been unable to download the 4.1.1 from sammobile. I have gotten some media player, etc. which I don't know whether is still on my computer or not, but have not gotten to the download of the actual software.
Do I have to agree to everything that they try to get me to install?
You are probably hitting one of the ads that put up fake download buttons. Just a guess though.
It seems that registering helps
