Hello,
I have always thought that OTA update would fail with a custom recovery. However after reading about another user's experience I decided to try it. This person stated that when they did the update CWM warned them that it would be replaced and asked if they wanted to fix it. It also warned that they would lose root and asked if they wanted to fix it. Sound familiar to anyone?
I did download the update but when I tried to install it failed. Now AT&T says my software is up to date, which is not true.
I am still on 4.1.2, rooted, CWM installed. Best way to upgrade now? I can't even find the OTA upgrade file that I downloaded.

From my experience with 3 i747m phones, rooted systems well not take an ota update.
Yup, you cannot get the ota if rooted, or with a custom recovery. You need to be full stock. Best way is a fresh firmware flash and factory reset.
I don't have to install OTA, I just wanted to update to the latest official AT&T version. Is there a flashable available that will work coming from 4.1.2?
By the way I used triangle away, downloaded update again, thought it was going to work but the update crashed

The latest firmware that's available is the 4.3 build. Havent been able to make a working one for 4.4.2 yet. But you can update using that firmware then use one of the threads in this section to update to kk.
Ok confused. Not sure how to install 4.3. Have read about bootloaders and modems needed before flashing. Guess I will have to keep reading. How to gy from 4.1.2 rooted, CWM, to the latest official which now I think is 4.3?

You can either follow the OP through step 4, or flash the firmware from this thread using Odin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2722660
After that you can follow the remaining steps in this OP, or try to get the official ota to update to 4.4.2.
Since you do not have the 4.3 bootloader, you could start fresh by installing stock 4.1.1 from sammobile.com using Odin and then just keep running OTA until you get to 4.4.2. Remember, using Odin will wipe everything on the phone so make sure you backup your important data.

Everytime I try to download something from Sammobile.com my AVG pops up a warning. Is this normal? I haven't yet made it through all of their stalls, installs, etc. to get to downloading the actually firmware.
Used to love AVG. But I think theyve gone downhill and this is a perfect example. Its a false positive. (Unless your browsers been hijacked or youre clicking on a bad/fake link).
Ive been using sammobile for years and never had a single problem.
I have been using sammobile for quite some time.
The site is legit. Maybe avg is causing the problem. I can download with no problem.
Not trying to be annoying, as I said haven't done any of this for a while but.....could I not flash a stock recovery, use triangle away, unroot, and then get the ota to work?

You could try that but there is no guarantee that it'll take the OTA update after going through the procedure you described.
If you removed too many Samsung Apps, that may cause the OTA update to fail as well.
Don't think I removed any Samsung or ATT apps I just had them disabled. Since I tried to run the update though they have all resurrected themselves. I have never flashed a stock recovery or unrooted before though

All I can say is try it and see what happens. If it doesn't work, the simplest would be to restore to completely stock and start the OTA update process.

I guess I can't read, but so far I have been unable to download the 4.1.1 from sammobile. I have gotten some media player, etc. which I don't know whether is still on my computer or not, but have not gotten to the download of the actual software.
Do I have to agree to everything that they try to get me to install?
You are probably hitting one of the ads that put up fake download buttons. Just a guess though.
It seems that registering helps

Bad news, everyone! I have an SGH-T999 that I rooted using hxxp://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-root-t-mobile-galaxy-s3-sgh-t999/
Now I am trying to unroot it using hxxp://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-unroot/how-to-unroot-t-mobile-galaxy-s3-sgh-t999/ so I can get the TMo OTA JellyBean update.
The phone is in download mode but Odin3 v1.85 is stuck at recovery.img and nothing has happened for 10 minutes. I verified the files all matched their published checksums and followed the steps exactly in the rooting and unrooting processes. How do I get out of this without bricking my phone?
Have you tried doing a battery pull and rebooting your phone in download mode?
DONT PULL OUT THE BATTERY, YOU CAN BRICK IT! Hold the power button for 10 sec. And it will safely get you out of download mode. Redownload the files again and try the unroot process all over again.

Thanks for the replies -- I was able to escape download mode by holding the power button. I booted to CWM with Up Vol, Home, and Power, and did a reset which got me back to factory. However, CWM still causes a failure when trying to process the OTA update? Where do I go from here to install the OTA update from TMo?
You have to install using odin.

I tried the unroot process using Odin -- same process as in the first post -- on my other computer and it fails even earlier at writing boot.img. No idea what to do at this point. Is there a way to remove CWM and replace it with whatever was there before?
Try using mobile odin to revert to stock if your having problems. Flash the stock firmware and itll revery you to stock including recovery I believe.

Thanks, I got Mobile Odin and was able to flash the SGH-T999 ROM from stockroms.net. Stupidly, I thought the JB update from TMo was already being pushed OTA since there was a big update from them that kept failing. Apparently, I was wrong. Guess I will try flashing the leaked ROM, though there is speculation the official release will be pushed in the coming week. Thanks again for the help everyone.

Can you share how to unroot S3 T999 step by step for the newbie, thank a lot!
Hi, So about 5 days ago I rooted my Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II using the video Max Lee made from galaxynote2root(dot)com, and about 36 hours later I get a notification for an OTA update. I kept off updating because I didn't really know what to do. I'm really new to this and there's still a lot I have to learn. Anyway, I ran the update and it restarted my phone and went to the TWRP screen. I restarted the system and it stopped notifying me about the update. And I checked and it says that my system is up to date. And I also checked to see if I still have root with a root checker app I downloaded, and it said I still had root also. So, was the app wrong and I don't have root anymore? And after I updated should I have restored the backup I made when I originally rooted? Also, thanks for any help, I've looked around and couldn't find anyone else with this question.
Your phone automatically downloaded the update and was waiting to be powercycled to install. However it failed to install because it requires stock recovery to install and you dont have it. So your phone boots back up and all is good with no changess.

I also have the same issues. I did a back up of my original roms and re installed using twrp . I down load the new update and when its going to restart it goes into to twrp menu. From there i am stuck on what to do.
It failed because you're not on stock recovery. If flashing the stock ota, you need stock recovery.
If you have twrp recovery, read and review this thread:

Before I rooted my note I made a back up using twrp. Is that not a stock recovery file ?.
Yes and no. That's basically just a backup of the stock rom that's only flashable via twrp since that is the recovery used to create the nand. So yes it is a recovery but only flashable thru twrp.

Ok well I did recovered using twrp and it installed and took me back that state before the root. I was thinking that took me back to original state and then update . I did download the update but as it was restarting the twrp home sceen would pop up and not update. So now I have no root or new update. Its funny it was easier to root then to unroot.
The link I posted above would have allowed you to flash new firmware and ma7 through twrp. No unroot reroot required. ..
And like stated, you can't update the stock ota update without stock recovery.

There are 6 links on that thread, one for odex and deodex (which I have no idea what it does), and then the 2 links for ma7 one all in one, and one just regular. And then there are another set of 2 links for the kernals, one regular and one modified. I guess what I'm asking is, how do I install these and which ones should I install? I have no idea what any of them do anyway.
How
how do we go about it and what files exactly do we need? why is everyone so vague?

I have flashed over 30 SPH-L900 (Note 2) fron Sprint to Boost.
I do everything on CDMA (paid version) 3.9.
Since the L.900VPAMAZ update I can no longer change the esn to Boost because the 16 digit CDMA passcode is no longer the default passcode for the Note 2. The old pascode: 01F2030F5F678FF9 still works for the Galaxy S2 and S3 but is no longer recognized on CDMA Workshop or QXDM.
If anyone knows the new passcode please let me know.
If I find it I will post it so that noone else has this problem.
Thanks!

I would suggest using mobile Odin. That's how I do it. You just need an app to unzip the rom download, which then gives you a tar file. Do not unzip the tar file. That's the format mobile Odin uses.

Well I give up... I have finally done something that I can not fix. I can normally google and find my own answers and I never have to ask anyone but this time is different.
I have the I317 Note 2, Everything was fine, I was running a stock rom earlier this week and the phone started acting funny. So I though screw it, Ill just go back to stock. So i downloaded.KIES_HOME_I317UCALJ2_I317ATTALJ2_215287_REV04_user_low_ship.tar and used Odin to flash the stock firmware. I DID do a full wipe before I went back to stock. It worked fine for 2 days. It kept wanting to download an update. So it did. When it restarted from the update that the phone downloaded it got stuck on the Samsung screen.
I thought no big deal, I will just reflash the stock firmware and start again... FAIL same thing happened. It wont get past the Samsung screen even after leaving it on that screen for a hour. So then I tried to get into recovery... it wont let me.Then I reinstalled the stock rom and waited for boot, then I flashed CWM and tried to get in to recovery that way. No luck.
I feel like I need to do a wipe and start all over but I cant figure out how to do a full wipe without recovery. There has got to be something easy that I am missing but I cant figure it out. I will keep on searching with hope that someone tells me what I am doing wrong or what to do.
THANKS
If its still able to go into download mode and odin recognizes the device your good just be patient and download the correct firmware.

There are some issues with the OTA update from LJ2 to MH3, which it appears you still have sitting on your phone. You can try booting recovery and clearing cache - that should get rid of the OTA file.
The thread below has some information on how to update from LJ2 up through MH3 and then MK6. It's intended for those who already have the MK6 bootloader - if you don't already have that or want that, you'll want to stop at MH3 and consider your options.

One that would work.... LOL I really dont have a preference other then I did not care for 4.3 I ended up with 4.1.1 and I couldn't be more happy. If they ever get 4.4 I would try that.
Its funny 4yrs ago I had the Sprint Evo. I changed roms more often then I changed shirts it seamed. I never had the issues or anything like what I ran into yesterday. I was so careless just trying every rom that was released. Because of that I will always remember the EVO as my favorite phone.
Those were simpler times...
I assume you want root and know how to get it.
Since you have the mk6 bootloader you will need to avoid odin flashing any packages that contain bootloaders in the future. See my mk6 thread for details.
If you want to get to 4.1.2 there are rooted cwm packages for ma4, mc3, and mh3 available. Wherever you end up, I recommend freezing the AT&T Software Update apk from within Titanium Backup or equivalent to ensure that you don't get a forced ota update at some point in the future.

I reboot my phone after to initiate the OTA but of course I can't download the OTA because my device status is still custom and without root I can't triangle away or do anything.

A stock firmware package makes the phone all stock. MDL baseband on an MK2 build means you didn't flash a stock firmware. Which 'stock' firmware did you flash?
As to root, did this 'stock' firmware also flash recovery? if it didn't you can download the recovery flashable supersu zip from chainfire's website into the phone and do it that way. Otherwise, I don't think there is a way to get root access from the OS itself, unless you find an exploit that grants su access so you can make system writable and push supersu.

I will try to root using your information given. This did return to stock recovery as well but when I try to flash anything through it I get a signature verification failure. Unfortunately, rooting or installing custom recovery needs to be done through a computer. As of this moment, there are no root exploits that can be done via the phone itself. I'm sorry.

That's because you need a custom recovery, it's why I asked whether the firmware you flashed replaced recovery or not.
As vigz said, you need a computer to at least flash cf root with odin.
