Hi All,
About a year ago, I bought an HTC One X from Three UK. I recently came to China on holiday and bought an external battery pack from a market stall. Everything seemed to be going well until one day I plugged my phone into the external battery pack and it suddenly died even though it was on ~50% charge, it wouldn't boot and it wouldn't charge when plugged into a power supply (no red LED shining). No combination of pressing buttons would work, so I decided to get it fixed.
I went to a repair guy in China who said that he would charge me if he could repair my phone, but no charge if he couldn't. He disassembled my phone but was unable to fix my phone. He said the problem was that the motherboard was 'burnt' (I'm not sure if the literal translation is correct), and that it would cost 70% of the original phone's value to repair (although he could be wrong about my motherboard being dead)
Now my dilemma is this: I'm not sure if I should send it to Three UK or ask another cheap repair shop in the UK. The problem with sending it to Three UK is I'm not sure whether they will repair it or not - my phone is completely dead and I don't know whether they will count that as improper usage. Also, now that my phone has been opened, will the repair center be able to tell that my phone has been opened before (I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to open up the HTC One X) and then deny my warranty?
Thanks for any help that you guys can give me!

I haven't but I probably let it charge a while after my HTC One X died. Out of curiosity, why one day? It seems an awfully long time.
I'll plug it in now, and when should I take if off the wall charger? Also, what signs should I be looking for?
Thanks,

I'm hoping for a blast of life. I once thought I hardbricked mine, I left it in the wall charger and it booted up in the bootloader after being in the charger for a day. Reflashed my rom and boot.img and never have i had problems. I suggest trying to boot the phone up after a day or so, if this will not work try and charge it again and acces the bootloader right away. If you can access the bootloader you can flash custom software. Does the red LED show if you charge it? Can't you acces the bootloader at all?
Oh ok, so am I hoping for it to suddenly turn on or am I hoping that after a day or so I will be able to boot into bootloader?
I have not really used it or charged it since my phone died, but the red LED doesn't show if I charge it and I cannot access bootloader

Yes just leave it be, it's all the advice I can give to you right now.. Try it and if it doesn't work you can always get a replacement. This is a weird issue though, I also had a HTC sensation which behaved the same. Left it overnight on charger and it booted to bootloader, then I used a battery script to charge it up while it's restarting to bootloader.
Just leave it on the charger for a day or overnight, see if it turns on
The same thing happened to my previous One XL. In my case I flashed a recovery, had to reboot and the phone just "died". It wouldn't charge or turn on. Not even after charging overnight. It took a JTAG repair to bring it back to life.

Possible fix
Okay, so a while back I had this same problem. My phone turned off, and whenever I plugged it in to charge it did not seem to be charging, odd. The red light was not coming on either. I was told to do 2 things, i cant remember which order so try both.
Option 1:
Plug your phone into your turned on computer with the USB cable and leave it there to charge until the red light comes on (leave for 1-2 hours, more if you feel it necessary), then quickly put it on charge using the wall charger.
Option 2 (not likely to work):
Plug your phone into your wall socket with the USB cable and wall charger and leave it there to charge until the red light comes on (leave for 1-2 hours, more if you feel it necessary), then quickly put it on charge through your turned on computer using the USB cable.
If neither of these work (as dumb as this may sound)turn off your phone and put your phone in the freezer for 15-30 minutes (This is done to discharge the battery, wont break your phone). When you've left it there for your chosen time, try option 1 again. If that doesn't work, turn the phone off again and put it back in the freezer for the same time and try option 2. If they don't work, i'm sorry I don't know how to help you.

Thanks, when you say it booted to bootloader, do you mean you had to press some button combination and it went into bootloader mode or did you wake up and your phone just happened to be in bootloader mode?
Also, would opening up the phone void the warranty? Because, if so, I'm not sure I will be able to get a replacement.
Thanks,

Thanks, I'll leave my phone plugged in to my laptop and come back to it in a few hours.
Which problem would your solution be fixing? Would it be trying to fix the battery? Because, apparently, the problem with my phone is the dead motherboard
Thanks,

Yeh it would be for fixing the barging issue of the battery

'Barging'? But surely fixing the battery wouldn't fix the motherboard?
Sorry, I'm slightly confused, please could you explain?

Sorry I meant charging. I found it hard to believe that your motherboard was the problem, but if you're sure that's the issue then don't bother trying my suggestion. That really sucks man, how'd it happen?

I think everyone is kinda missing the point here, the OP made reference to an external battery pack from a market stall which seems to be what killed the handset. Coupled with the fact that a seemingly reasonable repair shop, they didn't charge any money, said the board was dead I think it's safe to assume that the external battery pack was the wrong voltage/amperage or it was faulty. And just in case you do try to charge it, on the slim chance the shop was wrong about the board, it's no good charging on your laptop, you need to plug it into wall charger.

Yes, thank you so much, you are the first person to pick up on that!
I did leave my phone plugged into my laptop for a few hours, but no red charging LED. I also left my phone plugged into the wall charger overnight, but also no red charging LED. Does this confirm my fear that my motherboard is completely dead?
The guy I went to seemed reasonable, but he didn't seem 100% reliable. He didn't have a manual of the HTC One X up on his computer screen or anywhere, he just went straight in, although it might just be me being the skeptical one. I would say I don't completely trust him, so should I go to another cheap repair shop in the UK or just send it to Three and hope they don't notice the phone has already been opened?
Thanks,
~DarkEddy
Anything is worth a try if it isn't going to cost you money, although I must say I have seen a number of cases of external battery packs frying boards. I would say three would be your best option if it's still under warranty, but the there is a screw inside that has a seal over it and if that screw was removed then they will notice the broken seal, unless they are blind. They look for things like that so they can get out of repairing handsets free of charge. If the phone is dead you don't really have anything to lose. The only other option is sell it for parts

Thanks so much for your advice!
When you say you've seen a number of similar cases, do you often repair mobile phones or as a job?
If I do send it in to Three for repair, and they notice the broken seal, how much will they charge me to repair it or will they even give me this option at all?

This is your second thread on this issue, why not continue in the other thread...I reference http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44370602#post44370602
To answer you dilemma directly, send it to Three and play dumb as a post. You have no idea what they're talking about...did they sell you a refurbished phone? You're outraged, blah blah.
Or you might try going to HTC directly.
With either or, I would simply leave out the details. You plugged it in to charge, which you did, and it just died. Poof. Gone.

I suppose I should have continued in the other thread, I just thought my post was a bit cumbersome and overloaded with excess information.
Three did send me a refurbished phone when they weren't able to repair my previous HTC One X, but I'm pretty sure they would have tidied up the internals as well (adding their seals)??? They even sent it to me with some blue plastic tape covering the back and sides of the phone.
I could try going to HTC directly, but I suppose it would be more complicated than just asking Three, so I'll do what you said and hope for the best

hi guys,
So in my other thread i explained that I sent my rhodium to htc under warranty as the phone would no longer charge. They refused to repair for free due to me changing the rom. So I know have the phone returned to me, I try a new battery and find that the phone will charge but only when jiggling the charging connector. whilst holding the phone down i have to push the plug into the bottom of the device and pull the plug upwards to maintain contact and charge.
Obviously this is not ideal, so any suggestion on how to fix it?
Many thanks

I don't know if HTC will catch it now that you've already sent it in once, but you can flash your phone back to the stock rom AND the stock SPL again, and they should accept that as warranty-eligible....assuming they don't make the connection that they've already seen it "tainted"

I had the same problem and I discovered that putting it in my pocket along with a filthy car charger, had goofy'd up the contacts on the phones' charging port. I took a razorblade and a made the end of a toothpick into a sort of brush and cleaned out the inside of the port and all has been fine since. Obviously you are going to want to remove the battery while performing this cleaning on the off chance that you short out your phone and break it for real. Good luck.
I charged my G2 via USB to my PC today. I noticed that the green light came on, and about 10 minutes later I heard the sound from my PC indicating that the USB had been unplugged - but it wasn't.
Now the phone appears to be dead.
I've pulled the battery, put it back in, won't come on.
I pulled it again, let it sit for 30 minutes, put it back in, won't come on.
I plugged it into my wall charger. I get 3 one second long orange LED flashes from the charging LED, followed by one quick 1/2 second flash. This happens once every few minutes (maybe every 5 minutes?)
Sounds like time for a warranty replacement - thoughts?

Well for one. If the phone is NOT turning on. They cant really tell if it's rooted. Second, Yes. If its not working man return it. They will have no problem with giving you a brand new one.
I just got off the phone with HTC - they had me try to do a factory reset - failed miserably! Couldnt get factory recovery to come up - or anything else for that matter. Having checked the serial, they want me to call warranty replacement in the AM.
NOW - that having been said - should I try going through T-Mobile even though this is a 2nd hand phone? I'm thinking it may be a little faster... Thoughts?

Yeah, go through T-Mobile. That's how a coworker got a brand new G2 after he reported his second-hand G2 as broken.
Oh, and next time, root your phone. That way you can fix the problem easier.
Leave it on the wall charger (not USB) overnight, and see if that makes any difference.
Can you please post what happened so others may have a bit of guidance in the future? Thank you,

Tried it - nothing
I think you're hosed. If you can boot into recovery, or connect on ADB (which requires USB), there isn't much that can be done.
The fact you haven't really messed with the phone at all (rooted), tends to make me believe its a hardware failure of some sort. A bad battery comes to mind as a possibility. But if you are on warranty, may as well send it in, and not mess with that.
Probably time to send it in for warranty repair/replacement.
I called and set up an RMA with HTC...
Based on the conversation we had, they don't send out replacements - they literally rebuild the phone and "refurb" it...
Guess i'll take a picture of the internal sticker with the numbers to see if I get the same device back!
I finally got around to sending it back - should have arrived there today. I have my Sensation now as my primary device but looking forward to having my G2 as a backup!
It might of been a dead battery lol. But now you'll never know!

Actually, when you send to HTC you are told specifically to NOT ship the battery, so, the battery, SIM, MicroSD, and battery cover are sitting in my drawer at home...
SO - if it comes back and still doesn't work, I'll lean towards the battery.
Well, I'll be damned - HTC just called me and told me it was indeed the battery! So, they are sending me a new battery, charger and USB cable.
I was going to mention the usb connection on the phone being bad because you and I had the same car home issue before the one where it kept launching for no reason. Well I resolved that by cleaning the usb port and its been fine since.
I figure the usb port was either dirty, hosed or was obviously improperly charging the device hence the orange led charge sequence.
Hopefully, HTC took a gander at you usb port and cleaned it or fixed it before you get it back, if you haven't already. If you did try cleaning the port out to prevent future problems.

Lol!! That's pretty funny, I had a feeling that it would be the battery. Phones don't break all of a sudden if you didn't do anything rooting wise or has touched water. Just hope that they won't update your G2 to Gingerbread! Then you can't root and now stuck like me

Somehow my phone has bricked itself. It's a Droid Incredible 2 that I purchased off an ebay power seller a few months ago. I've had no problems with it. I got myself a wireless charger for Christmas. Not sure if that is relevant or not, but wanted to give all the facts.
Last night I put the phone on the wireless charger when I went to bed like I have since Christmas. This was about 2200ish. Around 0300ish I hear beeping sounds from the charger and I hear a loud ticking sound from that vicinity as well. No idea if the ticking sound was coming from the charger. I was dead asleep and thought I might be dreaming it. Then it stopped. I went back to sleep and thought nothing of it until this morning when I picked up my phone and it was dead.
By dead I mean completely dead. Press the power button and nothing happens. Plug a charger into it and the charging light blinks once every 4-5 seconds. The phone still will not power on. Battery pull had no effect. Tried to get into recovery by holding the volume button and power button down. Nothing at all.
Any ideas before I take it down to the VZW store this evening? My phone is rooted so I may have voided my warranty and I have no way to un-root it. It seems to be a hardware issue, not a software one though so it shouldn't matter.

Sounds more like your charger fried your battery, and that's if you are lucky. The other possibility is that your charging port is fried as well, not as likely though since you said it still blinks when you plug it in. My personal opinion would be to get a new battery and charge it with your normal charger, if that works then toss the wireless one, it's probably bad news.
Unfortunately if you had purchased the phone from verizon they would have just given you a new battery free, they usually do that no questions asked one time for each customer, at least from all my encounters that's how it's been.

good call, didn't even think about that, if it doesn't work after trying to charge it with the normal charger then most likely the wireless charger fried the battery and you it just needs to be replaced.

Sadly I don't have another battery to test with. I'm sure they have one at the VZW store I can test with (I hope). It doesn't power on even plugged into the wall though. Shouldn't it power on plugged into the wall whether there's a battery in it or not?
I'm not sure how it could have fried the charging port if it was charging wirelessly. Unless you're talking about the charging connectors inside the phone. That would be bad news altogether. But if that happened, the phone wouldn't go from fully charged to 0% in just 3-4 hours. So that would indicate the entire phone is fried which would make me extremely unhappy.

I would go to a verizon store and check on testing out another battery then. Hopefully that wireless charger didn't fry anything internally. Also, if your battery is completely dead then the phone won't bootup even if plugged in, it's like having a dead battery in your car, if you have low battery your car will start up but if you have a dead battery it won't because it needs at least a little juice to fire up the alternator. Hope that analogy made sense lol.

Also, if your battery is completely dead then the phone won't bootup even if plugged in, it's like having a dead battery in your car, if you have low battery your car will start up but if you have a dead battery it won't because it needs at least a little juice to fire up the alternator. Hope that analogy made sense lol.

It did. I just figured with no battery it would bypass the battery and run just on AC power. I'm using my DInc at the moment so I still have a phone. The battery for the DInc has the terminals on the other side and I'm guessing it's not as simple as just turning the battery over. Last thing I want is to make things worse.

Nope, don't even attempt that, you might cause more problems than you already have. Bottomline though, I'd just take it in to a verizon and see how they can help you. They are usually really cool about giving a hand at most stores.

I'm desperate at this point and that still struck me as a bad idea.
I can't find any other instances on Google where using a wireless charger fried a phone.
Went to the VZW store. They said my phone had no warranty on it, but since I purchased insurance they'd overnight me a replacement. They said the battery is good. The phone itself is dead apparently. With the holiday and me getting there after 1700, I'm guessing I won't get it until Tuesday. I'm now worried about how to wipe my personal data from the phone before sending it in.
Smash the phone.. they wouldn't find out.. its an insurance replacement already and that's 99% of the reason insurance exists.. for water/smash/loss to the phone.

agreed. Assurion actually performs a master reset on devices before booting (if phone actually boots). If not they will use your phone as a donor phone. I use assurion as the rooters get out of jail card. They just dont give a damn.
In fact I have "lost" many phones just to have parts lol. Cheaper and faster shipping than eBay.

After sleeping on it, I remembered that I've got a screen lock on there so my data is all safe. The phone is programmed to nuke itself if someone enters the wrong code too many times. I'm not too worried about it now.

Not trying to sound like a ****, but it's people like you who cheat the system for their own benefits. Inturn, the prices of insurance go up resulting in ridiculous prices to pay.
Pretty soon insurance isn't even going to be worth it to buy because it will cost so much.
Not once did I ever say I cheated the system. The devices I am claiming as lost are broke. What would be the use of paying for another phone if the one I have works.
The cost of insurance being raised is due to inflation caused by shipping cost being raised due to the cost of gasoline.
In fact what I do saves me from multiple insurance claims. Example I washed my old x10. Filled claim as lost. Recieved my replacement. A month later broke my screen. Instead of having to use insurance again I simply swapped out my screens.

Strangely enough, the device now works. I put it on the charger when I had the problems with it and it wouldn't power on and the charging light just flashed. I just plugged it in again 'cuz I was bored stiff more than anything. It started charging. I pressed the power button. It powered on. Battery says it is at 14%. Should I trust this device?
Let it fill up all the way.. try it

Fill it wirelessly or wired? I'm thinking wirelessly. A replacement device is on it's way anyway and VZW says the battery tested good.

Whichever way you did it to get 14%

It charged over night with no issues. I transferred my service back to it, but I'm carrying my full charged backup phone with me for a couple of days. VZW tested the battery at the store and claimed it was good.
So, I'm on stock ROM and been using Sony charger.
My T2 Ultra Dual doesn't seem to take charge, even it chargers, it charges upto one percent. When I try to switch it on, it turns on and says "Battery Low, Shutting Down." I've tried Switching cables, chargers, sockets and tried with system. Any Help?
Can you tell if your phone even recognizes the charger?

Sorry for taking so long, phone doesn't recognise the charger. It only recognises while the phone is switched off.. But doesn't charge
Also the service center guy said that both the battery and port are working good, but it doesn't hold the charge. It's out of warranty. And he said there might be a need to send it to head office
office. He asked me to submit it next week. I'm afraid of what cost he might say. So, I'm looking for help. Thanks in advance.
Never mind, have opened the housing of mobile. Cleaned the slot and charged it using chromecast's data cable..
It's now charging.
I'm having the same problem. Could you clarify what you meant by cleaning out the slot? It puzzles me that your (and my) phone still charge till 1% before you "cleaned out the slot". Thanks.

does your phone start??
I don't know I used to charge it all day long. Then I got frustrated and opened the housing and cleaned the slot with vodka. Yeah, Vodka. Even then it didn't charge, it stuck at 1%. then I connected it to my television and connected to chromecast cable. it worked. Don't know whats wrong. Even the service center guys couldn't figure it out, I sold it now.

Thanks for clarifying! I checked the USB slot for dirt but no luck there. When the battery is at one percent, my phone does start but it shuts down pretty quickly. I gave up all hope on my virtually dead T2 Ultra. I've searched solutions for this problem all over the internet and it seems to be a very common issue with Sony phones. I bought the new Moto X instead and I'm generally much happier with it.
P.S. For the occasional reader who now wants to clean phone parts with liquor, make sure it does not contain sugar. Straight vodka is indeed a good choice. (Denaturated alcohol is better but not so easy to get.) There are also plenty of youtube video's explaining how to clean a USB port.
Haha didn't know that bro. ^^
Thanks for that. Will never do that again.
Hi guys. I have a peculiar issue on my hand with my one month used Note 8 pro. One night I was a little lazy to put my phone on a charger and it turned off due to completely drained battery. I connected it to the charger and waited for 5 minutes then turned it on. However it did not turn on. Only the LED was glowing. I left it charging overnight but it still didn't turn on the next morning. If I remove the charger and try to turn it on, the back light is on and it vibrates, shows battery empty icon and goes off again. While charging, it shows nothing. Here are the things I have tried so far:
1. Keeping the phone charging overnight on original/different 2A/1A chargers and on laptop.
2. Pressing all combinations of the three buttons and keeping them pressed upto one minute.
3. Removing the battery and trying to resurrect it by a device supplying 12 volts directly to the battery (warranty is definitely void now).
4. Trying all of the above after a couple of weeks.
What's weird is that it tries to turn on and shows battery empty icon which means the battery isn't completely defective and it could be a software problem? Anything I can do other than replacing the battery? (I couldn't find a battery replacement from my country and ordered it from China. It's been in transit for more than a month)
Any help is highly appreciated.
Also the computer dings when I connect/disconnect the phone. Someone please help.

I did all that but it didn't work. I'll probably never buy a Redmi device again. If it were a more known brand I could find its battery on every corner shop.

First of all you should not have voided the warranty of a device still in warranty and secondly, you can always claim warranty, oh wait you voided it already. Now you don't like redmi phones, very interesting argument. I am not here to indulge in your arguments I had an idea it didn't work you are on your own.

If you can't be helpful, please stay away. No one is forcing you to reply or get into an argument with me. I understood the consequences when I voided the warranty and willing to pay for the fix, but the parts aren't available. I didn't know a simple rant about a corporate will offend you so much. And if you could read, you would have seen that I tried your bright idea already.
Since you no longer have warranty, open the phone, remove the battery and shortcut it, just use a wire and force a contact between +/-.
Then try to charge it again for a couple of hours, if that doesn't work, use any 5V led light or something and connect it to the battery until it drains completely, and then charge the device again.
The purpose of both of this tricks is to reset the memory of the battery. Good luck. And please in future cases don't feed a phone battery with 12v, if the battery wasn't dead, then you surely killed it with that, also it's for safety, leave any voltage above 3.7 to the charger and the phone to handle it.
Please stay cool guys before it's too late, we wouldn't want this thread to derail.
Thanks
